Jun 4, 2010Last night I made the mistake of formatting my media drive. Before the format, it was ext4. then I formatted it to ext4 again because I wasn't paying attention to what I was doing(this mistake only gets made once). Now im looking for away to recover any/all of my data. The drive in question is 1tb. I have not written any new files to this drive.

Aug 19, 2010I have a laptop with Fedora 12 on it and I accidentally did an dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda (since then I learned to think before I type)
anyway, I stopped it in time (I hope), it only zeroed first 60 MB. So, it killed partition table and boot partition. What I need is home partition, and it should be untouched. home is on a LVM device (fedora default install settings), and I tried testdisk (supposedly handles LVM) but it found only one partition (I guess it's a LVM physical device, as there should be 3 partitions, /, /home and swap) and said it's not recoverable.
Is there a way to get access to files on that partition (partition itself, including file table should be untouched). Partition contains various data (video, audio, and text) I need back (and it's my data, not backed up, and not something I can redownload). Is there any software that can help me with this, and if not, is it theoretically doable (I believe it should be, as the partition itself is not damaged, so it should be possible to read file names and link them with data on disk, am I right)? what is a good way to image the disk, so I can reinstall the laptop while trying to rescue data from image?

Oct 30, 2009I have 3 drives in my computer. I installed Fedora 11 on my two biggest one, with the LVM treating them as one single drive. I attempted to install XP on my last drive. As I was installing, I selected my third drive (I'm 100% sure it is the correct drive as it is an 80gb whilst the others are 120 and 200 respectively) and told it to delete the partition on that drive and format. After I did that, it started to format, starting with my 120! I'm fairly sure that it was merely a quick format, as it only took 5-10 seconds for it to format, and that my data is still there. Is there any way to recover my "lost" data, or did I just really screw myself over?

Nov 1, 2010I accidentally formatted a 2TB drive of mine (big oops), but have recovered 2 of the 3 partitions using testdisk. My third partition is a LUKS encrypted partition. Testdisk managed to recover a piece of it, but it won't mount as most of it is unallocated. The partition originally occupied all space from sector 2,930,272,065 to the end of the disk -- sector 3,907,024,064. That is about 473 GBs. Currently, the partition only uses space from sector 2,930,272,065 to 2,930,288,129, about 7.84 MB.
The rest of the space is unallocated. Now what I need to do, is to expand the partition so that it occupies all the space that it used to. How would I do this? I cannot resize the partition, cause it would try to recreate the filesystem AFAIK and I don't want that, as it will fry my data. My data is not terribly important, but I would rather have it then not. I attached a screenie of kpartitionmanager. The partition in question is /dev/sdb2.
General :: Knoppix Data Recovery Ownership Permissions?
Jun 4, 2011I use Linux but have a computer with windows I use for gaming. It died and put the hard drive into another computer and used knoppix to recover my files. I looked at the ownership of the windows files and the owner is knoppix. Now I am concerned that ownership will not work on my new Windows computer (when I finish building it, that is). Since I don't get into Windows much I have no idea what those permissions should be.
If I copy them with owner knoppix can I even access them in Windows to change the ownership to whatever Windows will accept? If I change the ownership before putting them on a CD with knoppix, can I write the CD? I will have to use the hard drive on the new windows box so will not have access to the files later (unless I also copy them to my Linux computer for safekeeping). At least I know the ownership changes to make with Linux.

May 29, 2011I have been running a computer under Windows XP for years, and recently it stopped booting unexpectedly. It tries to load windows, but partway though loading a BSOD flashes and it shuts down. To remedy this and hopefully fix this, my frined lent me some Knoppix CDs that I could boot from. He also lent me some external hard drives. I want to be able to access my files on my old hard drive.
Here's the problem: (in Knoppix 6) When I try to mount my main partition of my hard drive, which shows as sda2 (sda1 is an old recovery partition left over from when I ran vista), the following message pops up: "A job is pending on dev/sda2" A little later another error window pops up: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken." I want to be able to mount my hard drive in Knoppix 6.

Apr 5, 2011I am working on a computer that the hard drive crashed. Inititially they had a virus, reloaded windows, and had the computer up and running. When downloading software it crashed and will not boot. I have tried all the numerous routine fixes with no success including using the repair discs. The repair discs no longer work and they are unable to get a second set. As a last resort I am able to access the hard drive when booting from Knoppix from a CD. There are a couple things I would like to try from Knoppix, but do not know if it is possible. First, Is it possible to load the boot files from knoppix? Second, can you roll back the drivers from knoppix?

Jun 2, 2011I had a major OS crash (Gentoo) maybe 2 months ago and completely neglected my system. Now I want to recover all my mirror raid data back so that I can restore the system. My plan is this:
1) copy all data so that I can have a backup
2) rebuild system with some HW upgrades
First step is to get the data out. I managed to boot with Knoppix and I have full access to my ext2 partitions. My mistake was to create the mirror partitions and these are not working now. I copied my /etc/mdadm.conf into /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf in Knoppix and then tried to start the services. This is what I got:
knoppix@Microknoppix:~$ /etc/init.d/mdadm start
knoppix@Microknoppix:~$ /etc/init.d/mdadm-raid start
Assembling MD arrays...failed (failed to load MD subsystem).
I can see the partitions:

These are my current ideas:
1) Can I change the filesystem type from mdraid to ext2 or ext3 safely?
2) How can I mount these raid filesystems so that I can copy my data?

Mar 11, 2009The HD in my Sony Vaio suddenly won't boot and all attempts to repair it have failed. All I care about at this point is recovering the data, so I tried to access it with Knoppix. After a "dirty drive" error message, I was able to view the contents. The problem is that it seems to only be recognizing the Sony recovery partition and not the Windows/Data partition. The drive size is detected at less than 10 gigs when it is actually 250GB. I am completely green when it comes to Linux. How can I access the data partition so I can back it up to an external USB drive?

Anyway, I have found that my bios does not recognize the hard drive when formatted to ext2! I have taken the drive and formatted it back to ntfs, and my bios recognizes it, and then back again to ext2, and nope, it's not there, thus I am still booting puppy from the cd...sigh...
Is my bios so out of date that I'm just out of luck? Is there anyway to check this?

Mar 16, 2011I have purchased a DLink Sharecenter Pulse NAS as my PC failed. I wanted to put the two SATA drives in and extract the data before formatting to use as JBOD or RAID. However, before I managed to access my data, the setup software started formatting the drives. I switched it off immediately.
Purchased a SATA to USB2 lead and connected to my work laptop but I cannot see the drive(s). Used Partition Magic and each drive has 3 partitions - of which show about 74GB as used and 2 x 512MB as not. Looks like the drives have been partly set for Linux but the format was not comlete. Have tried to use explore2fs to read them but I cannot access the 74 GB partition only one of the 512MB partitions.
I'm a bit stuck now - any one got any ideas how I can get my files off the 74GB partition before I put them back in the NAS to format.

Dec 19, 2010I just installed kubuntu 10.10, replacing an older installation. I have three hard drives one of which had all of the data I wanted to save, about 500gb. I repartitioned and formatted the other two drives and made sure that the data drive would be mounted but not formatted. When I booted into my new installation, the data drive was blank. I'm not sure if it's relevant, but I had just upgraded the file system from ext2 to ext4 before starting the installation.
I've been trying to recover my lost partition with testdisk. The website has instructions for recovering a formatted partition. It looks like it's working until the instructions tell me to choose Boot and RebuildBS, which I don't see as options. Can anyone give me any advice on how to recover? How did this even happen? Has anyone had a similar issue with installation?

Before installing Ubuntu OS I made a backup DVD-RW data disk, it had my brothers holiday pics when he went turkey and morroco.
