View 4 RepliesI have two disks from a old computer (now it doesn't exist anymore). They were in raid 1 with this configuration:
Code:
----------------
| disk 1 | disk 2
----------------
| OS
----------------
| |
| raid 1 | raid 1
| |
----------------
There is probably an error in one of the two disks, however raid 1 should allow we to restore data. So now I can physically mount this disks on a machine with ubuntu (ubuntu is on another disk). My question is: how can I restore data from disks? I think that using mdadm is not enough.
I have installed all the prerequisite(kernel-source, kernel-syms) and even the installation is successful.
Code:
I have tried with older version , yet same din't worked even for that.
I don't know what to do , since when i click on on Oracle VM Virtuabox , it runs in the taskbar but the GUI never returns back and closes itself after few seconds.
what i want to do is encrypt my entire home folder or at least make a new private folder where everything is encrypted. Previously i had tried to use truecrypt but it didnt work well on opensuse 11.2. Anyone here have issues with truecrypt with opensuse 11.2?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI cleverly built a machine with two drives mirrored, boot partition on the mirror. It crashed some time when I was not present, and was apparently writing to disk at the time, for since, it will not boot. I get error messages to the effect that there is no boot partition. At this point I am not particularly concerned to try to rebuild this array, though I have read a hell of a lot on the boards about trying that (and am daunted - everyone assumes you can boot the machine with the bad array). Instead, I am wondering is it possible to build a simple machine on a third disk, then "look" at the disks in the former (?) array, and/or potentially rebuild it?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI fail to install OpenSuse 11.3 with Raid-1. What I do: Partitioning -> Expert. sda1 type RAID do not format / mount, sda2 /(root) type RAID do not format / mount, sda3 /home type RAID do not format/mount. Clone disk to sdb. Raid -> add md126p1 type swap mount to swap, add->md126p2 type etx4 mount to /(root), md126p3 type ext4 mount to /home. Bootloader: GRUB, boot from MBR enabled, boot from / disabled. After installation the system does not boot and grub reports error that the specified filesystem can not be found.

Everything worked smooth during installation, the system boots, the mdx partitions are in their places, did the upgrades, configured the way i wanted, booted several times... all ok. Then i wanted to test the RAID and since its RAID1 i just disconnected 1 drive and started the computer. All what i got is

I just got openSUSE 11.2 set up on my home server. The machine has two 2TB HDDs, the first (/dev/sda1) is partitioned thusly:
10GB /
1GB swap
1.82TB /home (/dev/md1 in RAID1 array)
[code]....
I'm convinced that mdadm is going to be the death of me. I've wasted numerous hours on this so far without luck.
OpenSuse 11.4 on an old Supermicro box, creating a software RAID1 array across 2 x IDE 500GB disks. Creating /dev/md0 as a 250MB partition across /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdd1 for /boot, another 465GB partition across /dev/sda2 and /dev/sdd2 as an LVM partition to hold volumes for the various other OS filesystems. After the initial installation and configuration there were a series of mishaps with faulty IDE cables that had drives failing to show up at boot. Somehow, /dev/sdd2 got configured to array /dev/md1 as a spare drive. And nothing I've done so far gets it to show up as an active drive.
The obvious step of failing the partition, removing it, then adding (or re-adding) will bring it back as a spare. I've tried roughly a dozen different permutations of those same steps. The latest was to 'dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdd2' to clear the partition. Thought this might be the trick - after the zero, mdadm -E /dev/sdd2 reported 'no superblock' and no md1 configuration.
So 'mdadm --add /dev/md1 /dev/sdd2' and it still comes back as a spare. Here is mdadm -D /dev/md1
/dev/md1:
Version : 1.0
Creation Time : Sat Jul 9 10:26:01 2011
Raid Level : raid1
Array Size : 488119160 (465.51 GiB 499.83 GB)
code....
I can't stop this array, the OS is running from there. I can't easily boot from CD to repair, all IDE ports have disks attached.
Does anyone have an incantation to promote a spare to active?
i want to install wine on rhel 5.plz send me wine installtion command.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am new to openSUSE (and to Linux). I have try Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora and ended with openSUSE that seems to be the one I like. But I have some problem now. The system seems to hang on boot and after searching the Internet I found thread about ATI display driver (and I have ATI) so I installed ATI drivers. The system got worse and playing videos start to be not as it should be (and often freezing). I decided to uninstall these drivers to get my system back as it was but ended with more problem. Now my system don't start. I can boot in some kind of command prompt but nothing else.
Can I do something to restore the system or will I have to reinstall the system? I don't know if I want to reinstall it. I am using a very slow Internet-connection (air-card) and I have had so much headache on the other Linux (before I did end on openSuSE). I like openSuSE (even there is some minor things, like I cannot change my default browser to Opera, a Browser I have been using for almost 10 years but I still can use the Opera so it is a minor thing).
In the past month my root folder has become corrupted 3 times. General system restore doesn't help and installing the default kernel doesn't help. I don't expect a forum to be able to help with the corruption issus but is there any way to restore root without a complete re-install? It's a little time consuming.

View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter have the gui completly f***d up with an upgrade that messed up kde, I'm about to restore the original kde from the installation dvd (11.1) but there is no particular options to only restore kde, so I have concerns concerning some of those applications compiled and installed after the original installation (two years backward). I also updated the kernel to make things work with vmware...I don't want to loose time to recompile all the different stuff I need to work with linux.
Is there a way to be sure (by renaming /usr /bin /sbin for example) to keep the kernel alive (with libraries and headers) and all applications that were working very good before I did this update for kde (I won't do this again trust me)?The kde group never told me how restore kde from the original dvd so I'm a little disappointed because the system is working ok in run level 3.only kde is dead.I'll dig deeper before doing the reinstallation of suse 11.1...
I do regular full and incremental backups using dar. All disk volumes are labeled and mounted by label. There is no other operating system installed. I built a new system but due to having to RMA a disk, I built the openSUSE system on a disk from the backup cycle. This Maxstor disk has problems which is why it was moved into an external box and the backup system. I now have a replacement disk and wish to replace the Maxstor before it dies. I initially tried a disk to disk clone with clonezilla but this died complaining that a small target partition was smaller than the source partition. It had created the partition and the start and end sectors were identical. There are no problems with the new disk.
I decided that it would be a good opportunity to test a full system disk restore from the backups. I have in the past restored individual files and partitions but have never restored onto a bare boot disk. I have restored and labeled all 6 partitions. The partition containing / has been marked as active. /boot is included in the partition containing /. fstab is valid, menu.lst is valid, device.map needs editing but this is not a problem.
What do I need to do to make this disk bootable. I have looked through the GRUB documentation but if you try some standard GRUB commands in 11.3 you get messages saying don't do this use YAST. I have seen other suggestions ranging from trying to start the not supported system repair option to using dd to copy the MBR which seemed to trash the partitions in the users extended partition.
The YAST bootloader displays "boot from the root partition". I assume that this is currently what is happening rather than what YAST thinks might be a good idea for next time. I suspect that all I have to do is dd the first 512 bytes of the root partition. If this is the case I can add this to the backup process. While I automate backups I do not automate restores. Each restore tends to be different and I am not sure of the best way getting grub to work on a bare disk restore.
I had a triple OS xp 7 and Linux Open SUSE 11.4 the last one was the active partition.the grup boot loader used to provide a OS selection screen .any way , I cant boot my system after restoring a full disk image created by "Acronis TrueImage program" , what happens is that i get a BIOS message "there is no operating system insert disk and try again"however when i set winxp partation as active i can boot winxp againThere is some thing I'd like to ask for please ,when i install Linux : did it install grup boot loader on the master boot record or on the boot sector of the / partition ?
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy problem is that I have installed openSUSE 11.2 on a laptop with Windows 7 already installed. Yast resized my Windows partitions, which seemed to upset Windows as I had to go to my Windows Recovery Disc to restore it. When Windows was restored it did something so that GRUB no longer appeared. So I did a system recovery for openSUSE 11.2 which then removed Windows 7 from GRUB! Now I'm trying to restore Windows 7 and configure GRUB so that Windows and openSUSE will stop fight for boot supremacy and play nice with each other. Here are my Yast2 Boot Loader settings:

I have used Ubuntu 8.04 and uprgaded to the new 9.10 both using the gneom desktop. I wanted to work with KDE and SUSE so I bought the Linux Format magazine with the DVD 126 which had SUSE 11.1 with the KDE desk top. I have a Toshiba L455 laptop and had windows 7 on 110 gb and had ubuntu 8.04 on 50 gb and ubuntu 9.10 ob 48 gb. I had ran the installer and it identified both linux systems and I selected to install SUSE in the space allocated to 8.04. It only boots to suse with the option to select windows. It showes 9.10 mixed with suse. I have not used suse. Is there an uninstall that will allow me to start over with the installation after creating a partition first. How can I get 9.10 to boot or how can I recover data from it.

View 8 Replies View RelatedAfter one of the updates (the same day as the kernel was updated) my Startup Theme has been changed from standard SUSE light-green to a dark SUSE EDUCATION.
I'm not talking about GDM logon (this is OK) and not about Bootloader screen (also OK).
I meant a progress of the SUSE loading.
I have Open SUSE 11.1 with GNOME and some software from EDUCATION repo but not a Education release.
As I type this, I'm waiting (and waiting) (and waiting) for the Repair Tool Box, "Search For Lost Partitions" tool to stop running off of the install CD. I didn't actually mean to do that (I meant to select "repair file system!) and I don't see any way to abort it! How to I make it stop? (You can insert your best Deanna Troi voice there, if you like: "make it STOP!") Or do I just wait until sometime next week for this rascal to finish examining a THREE HUNDRED GIG partition, byte by byte . .. ?

View 2 Replies View RelatedLike it says in the title, I am thinking it should be this hard to install the RAID1 array in my brand new PC. Here is what is happening. I have two brand new 1TB drives that I am attempting a new, fresh install of 10.10 on (in fact, the entire box is new). I am attempting to use the alternate desktop install so that I can have access to the manual partitioning (which is required to setup RAID 1, correct?).
I tried to use the guide here: [URL]... I followed the steps, but when I got the the very end (after selecting and creating the MDs) I get an error message stating that there is no root file system defined. I went back and checked all the steps and I am sure I followed everything in the guide.
Here are some quirks (not sure if they are bugs or not) In step 5 of the disc partitioning, it says to select the bootable flag and set it to yes (I am assuming). I press enter over that options, the screen flashes really quickly to a progress bar, but then comes back to the options screen and it still says bootable flag is off. No matter how many times I do it is says "off".
Also, and here is the bigger problem I think. - So the guide says to select the free space in each drive and then select Automatically Partition the free space, which I do, and it comes back and looks formatted accordingly - has 975.6 GB ext4 / and 24.6 GB swap swap. No Problem there.
BUT - whenever I do the same thing to the second drive, the partitions on the first seem to disappear. Meaning, it doesn't say free space, and has two partitions listed, but the / and the swap (last items in each row) have moved to the second drive partitions. I am not sure if this is how it is supposed to be since the pictures in the linked guide to not show what it looks like after that. THis is driving me crazy and I have to have it set up in RAID 1 and unsure as to what it is I am missing.
