I currently have 3 500GB drives, 1 is my OS drive with Ubuntu 10.04, and the other two have been setup in a software RAID1 (mirror). I would like to resize my Ubuntu partition and install FreeBSD to try it out. How can I make sure that my software RAID1 is recognized and make sure no data is lost?

I just installed Ubuntu 11.04. The drive was formatted when I installed so it's 100% Ubuntu. The only major problem I have encountered is that Ubuntu will not recognize my SD cards. I really need to access these cards, all my film footage is on there. I think the internal SD card reader (If such a thing exists) would have been deleted during the installation process. I am a greenthumb to Ubuntu and have never used it before so I am rather stuck...

Clicking this will take the user to a page where they have to provide their username and password, and if it's correct, the database will be updated. When the "make a friend" page is generated, the link will have a ?author=32 (say) argument, to reflect the author's id in the database. Now my problem is, that I need the author AND username and password as arguments to the "make a friend" script. How do I do this?
Instead of making the link a link, I've been toying with the idea of making it a form button (which will look better anyway), and using a <input type="hidden"> argument, for the NEXT page, which will be the page requesting the username and password, but I still can't seem to come up with a viable solution somehows.

I have a single disk running the base OS and just installed 2 x Seagate 500GB SATA 3.0 drives in a RAID1 set that I would like to use for data storage. The OS sees the drives individually but not the RAID. Has anyone worked with a similar board and has any ideas what I need to do to get the OS to recognize the RAID1 array?

I cannot find any options in 'make menuconfig' to make these files modules rather than compiled elements. I'm thinking these cannot be modules because the file system won't work without open.c and read_write.c. Is this correct - I cannot compile fs/open.c and fs/read_write.c as modules, only as compiled elements? Or, is there some way for a module to overwrite these routines when the module is installed and re-enable the routines when the module is removed?

I build and use a custom kernel, and use the nvidia driver. This is on debian stretch.
By default, I build the image and headers packages with this line:

These kernel sources are usually the sources from debian, with a couple of more patches that I add. It appears that for nvidia-driver package versions higher than 352.79-1, the kernel headers/sources need to be prepared with 'make prepare' and 'make prepare scripts'. It's that simple. I concluded this after the nvidia dkms build failed on my custom kernel, but then succeeded after I pointed it to the full sources, but only after running 'make prepare' and 'make prepare scripts' on them. The problem is that this make-kpkg scheme doesn't appear to do this, or if it does, it doesn't properly include in the headers everything that it should.

There is probably an error in one of the two disks, however raid 1 should allow we to restore data. So now I can physically mount this disks on a machine with ubuntu (ubuntu is on another disk). My question is: how can I restore data from disks? I think that using mdadm is not enough.

I have remote capabilities with NX, but that requires them to initiate a connection to my workstation here, which is more painful than I thought it would be. I need a way of locking down the desktop, so it's read-only, so he can't make the changes he seems to keep making. I figure I could make the .gnome directory read-only, but I don't know if that would affect the normal operation.

I want to use the data drive to store backups of files from various ubuntu and windows machines. Do I need to reformat the drive as ntfs to enable windows use or can it remain as ext3? For that matter can I reformat as ext4 as a soultion? Again, I wish to use the data drive as a backup storage.
