Ubuntu Installation :: Restore Grub So Can Boot Again Into Windows 7 Without Loosing Data

I had i a dual boot win. 7 and ubuntu 9.10,recently i had some problem in my windows os so i restored the c drive to factory settings since both operating systems where in c drive so when i tried to boot grub was showing problem.the information displayed was loading grub, the file does not exist rescue grub> so what should i do to restore grub so that i can boot again into windows 7 and ubuntu without loosing my data.

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.10 in a desktop computer with three disks. SDA with NTFS in SDA1, where I have Windows XP, SDB where I had Ubuntu 10.04, and SDC where I have an NTFS partition. I want to install Ubuntu 10.10 in SDB without loosing the data in SDA and SDC. When I try to install it, when I choose specify manual partition, I only find this: Where is SDB abd SDC? What do I choose in Device for Boot Loader Installation?

I just made my system unbootable... Here is what i did.. I have two sata HDDs
160 GB (Contained Windows 7)
500 GB
I copied entire 160 gb as an mirrored image to 500GB HDD using Acronis Disk Director. I deleted entire 160 GB HDD.. Removed the 500 GB HDD and kept it seperate.. Installed ClearOS Enterprise 5.2 Worked a little bit... The i wanted to delete ClearOS.. So i connected 500GB HDD and booted again in Acronis Disk director Formated the entire 160GB HDD.. Copied back the entire 160 from 500GB HDD.. Now my sytem refuses to boot... Just 4 letters "GRUB" appears on the screen... I tried booting using XP CD.. It gives a blue screen.. I tried Windows 7 CD.. It says unable to fix due to MBR problem..

Hello everyone! I use UBUNTU 9.10 (karmik). But I am totally disappointed!!! Everything is too slow! I want to install UBUNTU ULTIMATE 2.0. Can I do that without loosing any data? (music, movies, etc) Do I have to store my data in another HDD?

I need to use the fixmbr command to fix my windows installation. I'd like to restore grub to its former state after doing so. I have searched how to do this and since my configuration differs slightly, I'd rather get more specific instructions. Right now this is what menu.lst looks like:

Basically, I used a USB stick to run ubuntu 9.10 live, then tried to install to an external 500gb HDD connected with a Sharkoon Drivelink USB adaptor. The installation went fine, but I get a GRUB error 21 when booting a lot of the time. I figure this is due to the way in which the drive is connected. I am a complete noob, and I want to just ove GRUB completely and restore my Vista bootloader. Unfortunately, I do not have an installation disk as my laptop didn't come with one, and none of the others I have other PC's are the same version (home premium 32-bit).If you know of a way to fix the GRUB issue/sso I can use the external drive I would love to hear them too, but the main aim of this thread is to help me remove GRUB and restore the windows bootloader. A few days ago I installed my first Linux product, which is Debian 6.0, and I installed the GRUB booting device on my main boot record, as it was suggested that it was a harmless step to take. Unfortunately, some quirk in my system made GRUB believe that I had XP when in fact I have Vista, so the options I have now are to boot Debian or to boot XP which is not on my computer. In other words, I have to get rid of GRUB now, but I'm realizing that he's not such an easy customer to kick out. I have moved my Linux installation to another drive, but the old GRUB always stays in place, and my Vista is stuck there frozen for eternity. So after considering all kinds of possibilities, I have come to the conclusion that the easiest way to restore my original boot record would probably be to find its backup copy that I assume the installation program made, and to copy it back into the right address at the beginning of the disk. I don't have the Vista recovery CD, so I really have to do this manually. So now my questions are these: did the installation program make a copy of the boot track, and if so, where did he put it and under what name, and finally, what command can I use from within the Debian terminal, which is now my only tool left, to copy the content of thesaid file into the first 512 bytes of the hard drive? I know that would be a simple matter for any serious geek, I guess I must be a little rusty. Anybody feel up to it?

I have an old Dell Dimension 4500 that, until recently, had 2 hard drives. One drive is running Xubuntu Koala and the other was running XP. I had set up Xubuntu to run LVM.
After needing XP again for a small project I tried reinstalling XP, got disk errors, took the drive out to just have Xubuntu, and now when I boot I get "Error loading operating system".
I have tried restoring GRUB from a Live CD with no help. Everyplace I look on the net talks about restoring GRUB after installing Windows on another drive. I'm trying to get GRUB working again after removing the XP drive.

I installed 11.04 after Windows 7. when the GRUB boot menu starts up there is an option for Win 7 boot but it will not boot windows. When that option is selected the screen changes colour for 2 seconds and then reverts to the GRUB menu. Ubuntu boots fine.I downloaded the Boot Info Script and ran it, the results are

how to be able to add windows 7 to my grub menu or to even be able to boot to windows 7. I am currently unable to do it and my system just automatically goes straight to ubuntu. I've tried holding down SHIFT during startup and all that appears in my list is ubuntu entries and a memtest entry. My windows 7 files are still intact because I can see the drive through ubuntu and see all my files. I am trying to have Windows 7 on one hard disk that is 640GB and ubuntu on a second hard disk that is 160GB

I had a dual boot machine with fedora 12 and windows vista and I could use grub boot-loader to switch between two. Few days ago windows got corrupt and I have to reinstall it. I put windows 7 now and as usual it erased grub. So to reinstall I put the fedora 12 installation CD on and followed some usual setup steps. When I got the command line I issued the command "grub-install /dev/sda" (sda not hda because It showed bunch of sda, sda1..) but surprisingly it said grub command not found. I remember doing it before while it worked fine.

I'm trying to dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu WITHOUT using Grub. This is to support Bitlocker encryption.
I followed this guide, and now when I select Ubuntu I get a Grub> prompt and no ubuntu.
I feel like I'm halfway there, I just need to get Grub to load correctly or something.

Is there any way to simply remove grub? Does GRUB reside in a specific partition? Do I have to just delete the partition that has GRUB on it?The way my bootable partitions work is something like this.
1)Installed Vista
2)Installed Ubuntu
3)Thought I removed GRUB
4)Put in new HDD(1) and installed Win7 onto it
5)Put in another new HDD(2) and put another Win7 onto that (but I disconnected every other HDD so that the bootloader would be written onto the new HDD(2). When I have all my HDD's plugged in now, I get a GRUB load error (I think it's 21).

I recently attempted to upgrade from Vista to Windows 7, however because the version of Vista I had would not upgrade to Windows7. This has removed the ability to boot into my Fedora 10 installation. After some brief research on the Internet, I created a Live CD of Fedora 12, and booted into that. Accessing the terminal I tried typing:

I just set up a dual boot on a system with fedora 12 and XP. XP in on one hard drive (sda) and Fedora on a second hard drive (sdb).
I installed grub on the Fedora disk so as to not touch the windows disk at all.
Prior to installation, in the bios, I set the Fedora disk (sdb) first in the boot sequence, and then XP (sda) so that the grub loader would boot up by default. (If I set the windows drive first then the system bypasses grub and loads straight into windows.)
My system can now boot up into Fedora fine, but if I select windows from the grub loader menu I just get a blinking cursor - windows will not boot.What do I have to do so that grub can boot into XP?

I rebuilt a server and am now trying to recover my large data arrays. The server was ubuntu 10.04lts before. I decided to rebuild it with CentOS simply because I am more familiar with it. I had 2 raid-5 arrays on the old server:4 x 1tb -> md0 5 x 2tb -> md1 The newly built server does not know about these arrays yet. How can I reassemble the arrays without loosing my data? I know the data can still be accessed because booting the server with a live-cd mounts and shows the arrays just fine. Should I boot with a live cd and copy the mdadm config file?

My problem is that I have installed openSUSE 11.2 on a laptop with Windows 7 already installed. Yast resized my Windows partitions, which seemed to upset Windows as I had to go to my Windows Recovery Disc to restore it. When Windows was restored it did something so that GRUB no longer appeared. So I did a system recovery for openSUSE 11.2 which then removed Windows 7 from GRUB! Now I'm trying to restore Windows 7 and configure GRUB so that Windows and openSUSE will stop fight for boot supremacy and play nice with each other. Here are my Yast2 Boot Loader settings:

I had Windows XP installed on my PC then bought a new HDD, installed Windows 7 & Ubuntu 10.10 in dual boot, later I added the Windows XP HDD as an external USB then typed "update-grub".
At boot up the drive appears at the bottom of the GRUB menu but when I select Windows XP it gets as far as the XP splash screen, after a few seconds there is a flash of blue screen with some writing on it then the PC re-boots. Here is grub.cfg:

I have just foolishly used live media to install F14. Pre-upgrade of F13 to 14 repeatedly failed. Sadly I used the use all available space option rather than the free space. As a result I have a working FC14 system but no data from my F13 installation. Is there any way to restore my f13 system and/or data?

I have Win7 and ubuntu installed on the same PC. Win7 was installed first, after I installed GRUB from Ubuntu, Win7 is not listed as a second option to boot. FYI, On the same PC I had Win7 and Debian (before changing from Debian to Ubuntu) and GRUB from Debian was showing Win7 as second option for boot. Ubuntu was installed on the same partitions as Debian. (For Win7 I have 2 partitions one 100M-system reserved and one 30G; both on NTFS). I have:

It would be nice to get a sticky thread up for dual boot installation issues. It seems like this is a very common problem with the upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04.
I was finally able to solve my issue dual booting 10.04 and Windows XP Home at this thread.

I had to reinstall Grub2 and run update-grub.
Then I had to run Rescue on my XP disk. Once to the DOS command line I ran the following command:
C:Windows>fixboot c:
I rebooted and now all is well. I can boot to Ubuntu 10.04 or Windows XP from my Grub menu.

I have been phenomenally unlucky with Ubuntu as seen my my post history and decided to dual boot.
I set it all up with a clean install, when I tried to load Windows from Grub the computer restarted. After much headache I managed to set it up correctly (when it wouldn't load from Grub I booted from the Windows CD and clicked on "Repair computer" and it finally worked).
Now I am having the same problem as before--I think my installed all the updates from Update Manager and it included a grub one. Now I can't load Windows from the grub menu: It goes to the Starting Windows screen and then reboots my computer. If I do it again it gives me an error message and an option to perform "Startup repair". When I try to do Startup Repair, the computer reboots after a few loading screens.
So I tried what worked before and put in my Windows 7 CD, and clicked on Repair Computer. BUT NOW it gives me an error message somewhere along the lines of system restore is not compatible with my installation of Windows, and to insert a compatible recovery CD. This is the ONLY Windows CD I have (legitimate copy).
Over the course of this migration experiment I have installed and reinstalled both operating systems 7-10 times total. I'd rather not do it again. My poor laptop is probably wondering what the heck.
I can't stick with Ubuntu alone because my wireless doesn't work with it, my grad school files are not completely compatible with open source software, and I can't play the games I'd like to. So I must have the option to at least dual boot into Windows.
When selecting Windows it restarts the computer entirely to the Compaq screen, not just to the Grub menu, if that matters.
