Mar 6, 2010It isn't possib;e to shutdown via the command "shutdown" because it requires root priviliges. So, how does it shut down?

Hardware :: Overheating Causing System Shutdowns?
Jun 16, 2010I have a Toshiba Satellite A505-S6965. My hardware is as attached via the Hardinfo report in pdf format.Here is the most recent kernel error. It never says it is shutting down. It just "dies" even after saying the temp/speed is normal.

Jul 23, 2010My server has the last couple of days had 3-4 random shutdowns. Where can i find the reason?hich logs etc. Im pretty sure its not power failure since my other devices hasnt lost power.. alarm clocks etc.

Oct 12, 2010I've Ubuntu Server 10.04 and am just using the terminal, no GUI like Gnome. So far it's working pretty great except for one big thing.
Whenever I go to sleep and there's no activity on my servers (it's not a big site so active users drop to 0 during the night), the server kind of disconnects. The only thing that can bring the site back online is to restart the whole server. I've tried disabling powersaving by using setterm but that changes nothing. Even if I wake up the server by pressing any key or so the site wont go back online!
I've tried just restarting both Apache and MySQL (I'm using LAMP-server btw) but not even that works. But as soon as I turn the power off and on at the server, everythings work like normal for a couple of minutes of inactivity (~5-15 minutes I'd guess) and then it's down again unless someone logs in to the site and is active.
Fedora :: Random Reboots And Shutdowns?
Oct 13, 2009I've installed fedora 11 (GNOME) on my laptop. It sometimes reboot itself. The screen goes black and reboots(sometimes just turn off!) Palimpsest Disk Utility reports HDD bad sector but when I run memtest, everything looks fine. Windows xp does not have this kind of problem before I use fedora

Feb 19, 2011When using Amarok in Kubuntu 10.10, the player will shut down after no specific reason. Sometimes if saving a playlist and sometimes when the player changes from one track to another. I presume this is a bug but sadly i do not have regular access to the internet so my system is sometimes up to a month old but no more.
Has anyone experienced similar performance when using Amarok with Kubuntu?

Apr 19, 2010Using 11.2 on self-built pc with AMD 9950 on Asus M3n78 Pro mobo. Boot drive is sata, with an external ntfs 1.5 tb USB/firewire/externalSATA connection (using USB at the moment.) nVidia 9800 GT video card (8300 gt on mobo.)It takes literally hours to boot up and more hours to shutdown this system.e point I am ready to hit hardware reset to continue. This is the 5th cycle with the same problem recurring each time, except sometimes boot occurs in a normal amount of time, but shutdown/reboot always takes hours.

Aug 8, 2010I don't shutdown my OS really often and sometimes the driver of my soundcard seems to crash so I need to restart it. I use the command "rcalsasound restart" which works well or "/etc/init.d/alsasound restart" but I lose the volume control during the operation. Moreover, I have a dell laptop with sound keys and naturally it doesn't work to. Do you know how to restart the volume control applet? And I'd like to know why these commands don't start also the volume control (I'd like to know a bit more how it works).

Sep 25, 2010My problem is that I need to move a moderately complex system from an old system to a new system. The old system is a core 2 duo running on an asus p5k-se (p35 chipset) M/B, Nvidia 8500 gt, 3 x sata II hard disks, 1 x sata dvd, 1 x ide hd, 4GB ram. It runs opensuse 11.1 kde 4 as a desktop system + samba server, apache server, database server + other non-opensuse software. In addition some of the opensuse software is not the default 11.1 versions as later versions were required. The nvidia driver is from the nvidia repo. There are several file systems, some under LVM.
The new system will be a core5 760, asus p7p55d-e M/b (p55 chipset), nvidia 240, 3 x sata II HD, 1 x sata dvd, 4GB ram and possibly 1 x ide HD. This M/B also includes USB 3 & sata III. I have no USB 3 devices but this may eventually change. I have no plans for sata III and believe that it may be better to attach any sata III SSD to the sata II bus.
What I would like to do is to move the hard disks from old system to the new system. What I would like to know is, if the system is left at 11.1, is the system likely to work with the new hardware. If the answer is no, if the system was upgraded to 11.3, would the transfer of the hard disks then work? In order to upgrade from 11.1 to 11.3 using the DVD i believe I should get rid of all non-default repos. I assume that I should also get rid of anything that was installed from them, e.g. the nvidia driver and any software versions installed manually outside RPM. Also is there any default 11.1 software that should be removed either before or after the upgrade to 11.3
Ubuntu :: Internal Disk In A Running System Usb-booted System Does Not Result In The System Detecting The Disk
Feb 27, 2011My system decided to crash on me, hard. It was humming along happily for about 2 months and now doesn't boot. If I boot from hard-disk, I get grub. Launching the first kernel choice hangs. I thought maybe the install was corrupt, so I booted from usb install disk. The usb hdd didn't boot; something about an error trying to access /dev/sda . Unplugging the internal disk and plugging in the usb install disk does result in the system booting. Plugging in the internal disk in a running system usb-booted system does not result in the system detecting the disk.
How do I know if the disk is physically broken? This seems unlikely since it does manage to launch grub consistently. Or is this still possible? How can I try to mount whatever is left? The usb install disk doesn't even list the /dev/sd*. Any pointers on how to reformat the drive if it's not being mounted?

Sep 6, 2010I am an absolutely beginner with Linux (ubuntu). I got fed up with widows and decided it was time to go. I installed (clean install from a cd) ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop. It is an hp compaq d220 MT.It looks good and feels good, well at least for a while since it keeps crashing. The screen starts to flicker, goes black, and the only way to get it up and running again is to press the on/off button until the system powers off and restart.

Apr 3, 2011In System Monitor, on the File Systems tab, the "Total", "Available" and "Used" columns don't seem to add up, and the "Used" percentage doesn't seem correct either.
My config:
/dev/sda1 = 80 GB SSD drive, / partition.
/dev/sdb1 = 50 GB FAT32 partition of an external 500 GB USB hard disk.
/dev/sdb2 = remainder of the 500 GB USB hard disk encrypted using luks.
Screenshot: The /dev/sda1 figures don't really add up well, but they're close at least (how you get "50% Used" from any of those figures I don't know!).
However, for /dev/sdb2, they're miles off:
"Free" = 146.2 GiB
"Total" = 409.7 GiB
"Available" = 125.4 GiB
"Used" = 263.5 GiB

(maybe relevant?: passive doesn't work) bob is jailed to his home directory, niomi is in ftp-special which gives her access to /. bob can't log in and his shell is set to bin/false. What could have gone wrong?

Jul 8, 2010I used to dual-boot, windows 7 and Ubuntu, but like a month ago, i decided to finally kill windows, so when i finished doing so, i had 160 GB. of free space. I never resized my ubuntu partition, since it had like 80 GB. of free space.Yesterday, I re-compiled my kernel, mainly to enable FrameBuffer in the console. So i decided it was time to resize my partition, to use the whole HDD.Turns out, that i had a little bit of problems compiling my kernel, and yes it took really a lot more than i thought ( I had to compile it twice ) but finally i got it working.
i still got some 100 GB. free, so is there anyway to get my system to it's normal weight?.I really don't wanna miss all my info, specially my programs, and customized desktop, it really took me a wile to set compiz just the way i like it.IM REALLY SORRY, I KNOW IT WAS MY FAULT, BUT I REALLY DON'T WANNA LOSE ALL THAT GB. Jan 25, 2011Recently I've backupped my entire /home folder on my laptop with grsynch trough ssh.Since I already had a simply text file containing all installed programs, I figured 'then, when i go from the backup trough my desktop, all my program settings will be restored if i run the txt file to install all those programs first.So i installed al programs, then i went from backup to /home on desktop, logged out and back in. Started up a random program (tried thunderbird and filezilla) and no settings were to be found.In retrospect, docky did start, but didnt have all the launchers i had on my laptop. so that could have been a clue.

May 23, 2010This is a bit of an odd problem that's been happening to me recently. My home folder is a version of Fedora old, I've been using the same one between Fedora 11 and 12 (which I'm now using).
When booting up, I notice that my system fonts are not the ones I have manually set. They're the ugly version, whatever exact font it is. It's only when I select System->Appearances from the menu that the system seems to detect my seletions to use Liberation fonts in all areas, and then everything instantly switches to the more visually pleasing Liberation fonts. This is a strange bug, I was wondering if anyone has experienced this or can point me in the right direction?

May 18, 2011I'm new to openSUSE, this is the first time i try to install openSUSE version 11.4. on my IBM Thinkpad T43 (on which SUSE Linux version 8.0 has been running before without problems). I have downloaded the ISO images and successfully burned the ISO images on a blank DVD. Having placed my openSUSE DVD in the drive and rebooted my laptop I can see the boot screen.
I then select installation with arrow up/down and press enter. Choosing language and keyboard layout works fine, as well as accepting the license agreement. However, when it comes to 'System Probing' the installation stops at 'Search for system files'. The cursor shows a little turning disk but the rest of the screen is blocked.

General :: Diagnosis An Unstable System / Seeing File System Is Not Clean During Boot?
Feb 22, 2010So 2 days ago everything was all fine on my machine. Has been for about a month, but all of a sudden as of yesterday I have no sound, I am seeing IRQ interupts on boot, During boot I am seeing file system is not clean, , and swap space is being used for the first time while doing normal task, etc. These are 2 new hard drives in RAID 1 with ReiserFS. I should have used a newer FS but thats a whole other argument.
Anyways here we go.
The system is Debian Lenny amd64
Physical RAM 4GB + 6GB swap
