Ubuntu Installation :: Install System Backup Made By Remastersys In EXT4

Feb 2, 2010

I have a question about ext4,remastersys backup : I have upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 via the upgrade button in synaptics, so it means that the files system was not touched, which means that my system is still ext3 as it was when I installed the 9.04. I can make a backup of my system as it is configured right now (that's how i like it) using remastersys.

Can I install my system backup into my machine after formating it into ext4 or when I create a backup using remastersys it must stay in the files system as it was when it was backed up? The issue is that right now the 9.10 responds from some reason a little bit slower than my 9.04 responded (to everything e.g. open/close windows etc...) and I read in the forum that ext4 makes 9.10 run faster.

Started up a random program (tried thunderbird and filezilla) and no settings were to be found. In retrospect, docky did start, but didnt have all the launchers i had on my laptop. so that could have been a clue.

Ubuntu :: Backup And Restore A Triple-boot System?

Jun 14, 2010

best/simplest way to back up my triple-boot machine, which has Karmic 32-bit, Karmic 64-bit and Windows 7 (64-bit) installed on 3 equal slices of the internal 1TB disk. There are a total of 6 partitions (1 primary+1 logical partition each for the two Karmic, and 2 primary partitions for Win7), and I would like to back it up on an external disk such that the whole system can be restored as-is by writing over the disk. I guess this means correctly backing up data+partition table+MBR, and I would also prefer backing up only the used portion of the disk (rather than creating a 1TB mostly empty image file).

To my knowledge the only way to reliably do this is with "dd" command, but I have never used it ("fsarchiver" seems to be the next best option, but it cannot back up MBR yet; and "partimage" does not have ext4 support). As described here and here, I should run the following commands from a live boot:

1) To back up entire data in compressed format (using 1MB read block to speed up the process):

dd if=/dev/sda bs=1MB | gzip > /backup/image.gz

2) To back up MBR+partition table (stored within the first 512 bytes of the disk):
dd if=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1 of=/backup/image.mbr

3) To restore data:

gzip -dc /backup/image.gz | dd of=/dev/sda

4) To restore MBR+partition table:

dd if=/backup/image.mbr of=/dev/sda

Ubuntu Installation :: Reinstall On Dell Mini Via System Restore - Boot Error

Feb 1, 2010

My Mini13 came with hardy preloaded, and it's got pretty messed up since, so I'd like to restore factory OS via a grub entry that looks like this:
title System Restore
root (hd0,2)
chainloader +1
boot

This points to a partition which, when mounted, has this stuff in it:
bootfs.img initrd0.img install.sh logo.png syslinux.cfg vmlinuz
boot.msg install.cfg ldlinux.sys rootfs.img vesamenu.c32

I'm not a computer, but that looks pretty good to me but when I select this grub option it just says:
Boot Error
Is there a log or something that might give me more info about the error?

Ubuntu Installation :: Remove Unr And Grub To Restore System To "like New"?

I'm having some trouble removing unr from my asus eee pc 1005peb, I installed it about a month ago and sadly to say I need cash so I will be selling the eee pc. I want to restore it to factory settings. I already tried uninstalling unr, by deleting the partition it was on, that didn't work. Once I booted up again it gave me a grub error. So I reinstalled unr and now have a left over swap partition from the original install. I want the system to boot up as it did before the installation of unr. How would I go about doing this?

Debian Installation :: Alterations Have Been Made To System?

Jul 16, 2010

Greetings to all from a 60-year-old computer hobbyist and Linux rookie making his first post here. Yesterday I completed a successful installation of Debian 5, lenny, and right now I want to learn what alterations or modifications have been made to my system. I have no complaint about anything at all, I just want to become prepared for any problems I might encounter later on.

1) At one point near the end of my Debian installation, I was asked whether the installer could add something into memory and I (hesitantly) let it do so without knowing what was actually being done. I have a multi-boot system with four versions of Windows installed prior to Debian ... and now my Windows 98 is able to see and access my third drive, a SATA.

Question: How did installing Debian make it possible for my Windows 98 OS to now see and access my SATA hard drive? It is my assumption Debian's installer has somewhere placed one or more drivers my BIOS/DOS now passes along at system startup. How can I make a backup of whatever Debian's installer has done there?

2) After installing Debian and my Windows 98 had begun seeing my SATA drive, I had to eventually re-install Windows 98 because the drive letter for its partition had been changed by the insertion of the SATA drive. At that same time, and while just leaving Windows 98 alone for a while, I had used NeoSmart's EasyBCD to add Debian to Windows 7's BCD ... but then my re-installation of Windows 98 over-wrote that and Windows 7's "startup repair" could never again make its own BCD work. After that, however, and after getting XP's "boot.ini" (including 98 and 2k) working again, a re-installation of Debian resulted in GRUB making a startup menu that now includes *all* systems.

Question: Why or how can/did GRUB find Windows 7 and add it in when Windows 7's "startup repair" could not make a working BCD (or could not make a BCD work) on its own? I have more questions ahead, but like I said: For now I just want to know what I have going on here so I can prepare for any problems I might encounter later. I have a lot of time invested in finally getting this multi-boot system running perfectly with Debian as its default OS and I do not want to have to go back to the beginning and do it all over again because something broke and I had no idea how to fix it!

OpenSUSE Install :: Backup / Restore And GRUB 11.3 X86-64?

Nov 5, 2010

I do regular full and incremental backups using dar. All disk volumes are labeled and mounted by label. There is no other operating system installed. I built a new system but due to having to RMA a disk, I built the openSUSE system on a disk from the backup cycle. This Maxstor disk has problems which is why it was moved into an external box and the backup system. I now have a replacement disk and wish to replace the Maxstor before it dies. I initially tried a disk to disk clone with clonezilla but this died complaining that a small target partition was smaller than the source partition. It had created the partition and the start and end sectors were identical. There are no problems with the new disk.

I decided that it would be a good opportunity to test a full system disk restore from the backups. I have in the past restored individual files and partitions but have never restored onto a bare boot disk. I have restored and labeled all 6 partitions. The partition containing / has been marked as active. /boot is included in the partition containing /. fstab is valid, menu.lst is valid, device.map needs editing but this is not a problem.

What do I need to do to make this disk bootable. I have looked through the GRUB documentation but if you try some standard GRUB commands in 11.3 you get messages saying don't do this use YAST. I have seen other suggestions ranging from trying to start the not supported system repair option to using dd to copy the MBR which seemed to trash the partitions in the users extended partition.

The YAST bootloader displays "boot from the root partition". I assume that this is currently what is happening rather than what YAST thinks might be a good idea for next time. I suspect that all I have to do is dd the first 512 bytes of the root partition. If this is the case I can add this to the backup process. While I automate backups I do not automate restores. Each restore tends to be different and I am not sure of the best way getting grub to work on a bare disk restore.

Server :: Phone System Reload Backup System?

Oct 7, 2010

At work we have a linux based ip phone system. Now this system was buggy for a bit but we now have it working perfectly. As it is we clone this hard drive and on backup I clone it back. This works but if for whatever I'm not in the office the backup can't go through because apparently no one can read the VERY simple instructions. What i would like to do is burn a cd with a copy of the hard drive (this configuration will change once every 6-12 months at maximum) as well as a VERY minimal linux install.

The goal is they stick the cd in and reboot. The system loads the super minimal linux then it runs a batch file that clones the portion of the CD that has the hard drive onto the system then it asks the nice moron....err....person...to remove the cd and reboot All I need is a a bootable system to a bash script that will run live from cd. I can make the nice bash script that puts to the screen a nice ascii graphic telling the lucky sap it's running and to come back in a little bit to make sure it's done.
