Booted up system and it stated please insert system disk press any key.So it sounds like my startup got corrupted? I running centos 4.5 on it (old yes) Is there a repair I can perform by a disk? Would it matter if I chose i386 or x86? I cant remeber which version was installed on it.
View 8 RepliesToday, I was downloading some stuff from online. I left for a few minutes and came back to find that someone had hit my loose power cord, causing the computer to restart. When I completed the reboot (It always says "Insert system disk and press enter" after checking CD drives), and had it load OpenSuSE 11.3 Failsafe (Regular won't work for me), it loaded into Teal (BASH, Command Prompt, Kommand, whatever you want to call it). At first, I thought maybe I screwed up and told it to load into that. But, I tried again, and it did the same. I tried using Non-Failsafe, and got the same results. I am able to edit, add, or remove programs from the Linux partition, though.

Then I formatted the partition again and reinstalled ubuntu. Since then while it's booting, I get the message Disk boot failure insert system disk and press enter. View 6 Replies View RelatedI bought a t770.uk HP desktop PC, which came without a Hard drive as the pervious owner had removed it for security reasons. A week later I got a hold of a brand new - out of an anti-static sealed bag - compatible Western Digital Caviar SE 80GB SATA150 7200 HDD, and installed it as directed by my t770.uk manual. Up until now, things looked to be on a roll. As I don't have any windows OS, I figured Ubunutu would be the way to go (and it certainly is from what I've heard and read about it. I can't wait!).
So I sent off for a CD and it popped through my mail a few weeks back. The problem that I am having is after booting past a very brief view of the HP POST screen, the screen goes black with the error "Disc boot failure-insert system disk and press enter". I've tried placing the Ubuntu disc in (assuming it is asking for that? An OS disc) and restarting, and changing the boot order around, but no matter what I do the error persists and I can't install Ubuntu. I really want to get this PC running with Ubuntu.
My system decided to crash on me, hard. It was humming along happily for about 2 months and now doesn't boot. If I boot from hard-disk, I get grub. Launching the first kernel choice hangs. I thought maybe the install was corrupt, so I booted from usb install disk. The usb hdd didn't boot; something about an error trying to access /dev/sda . Unplugging the internal disk and plugging in the usb install disk does result in the system booting. Plugging in the internal disk in a running system usb-booted system does not result in the system detecting the disk.
How do I know if the disk is physically broken? This seems unlikely since it does manage to launch grub consistently. Or is this still possible? How can I try to mount whatever is left? The usb install disk doesn't even list the /dev/sd*. Any pointers on how to reformat the drive if it's not being mounted?
I am an absolutely beginner with Linux (ubuntu). I got fed up with widows and decided it was time to go. I installed (clean install from a cd) ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop. It is an hp compaq d220 MT.It looks good and feels good, well at least for a while since it keeps crashing. The screen starts to flicker, goes black, and the only way to get it up and running again is to press the on/off button until the system powers off and restart.

(using rEFIt) All of them where working. Since I installed Fedora on the 4th partition I can only boot Mac OSX. When selecting one of the other OS's it says: "no bootable device insert boot disk and press any key"

I recently started experimenting with Ubuntu 8.10 and I've spent the last week mostly getting the HDD partitions and desktop to my liking so I have not installed many actual programs yet. As of this last Saturday ( 11-29-2008 ) my Keyboard (PS/2 connection) worked fine whether booted into Ubuntu or XP and worked in grub as well. I discovered on Sunday the 30th that when booted into XP my keyboard no longer worked(but my USB mouse works). The keyboard still works fine in Grub and in Ubuntu but no amount of keypressing works when booted into XP. My device manager indicates the driver has been corrupted or something (Code 39 error) and indicates the driver files are i8042prt.sys and kbdclass.sys.
Here's a list of the things I've tried so far:Tried swapping in a USB keyboard; I've tried updating the drivers in Device Manager; Tried uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers in Device Manager; I tried the "uninstall driver, shutdown, unplug keyboard, reboot, shutdown, plug keyboard back in and reboot" routine; deleting those two files and letting them be rebuilt at boot; using the recovery console to copy them from the XP install CD to the System32/Drivers folder and as a last resort I tried a repair install only to find when asked to enter the CoA code the keyboard still did not work.
I obviously borked something on the Ubuntu side that's causing a conflicting with those drivers on the XP side but I'm at a loss as to what that might be. The only thing I can remember installing since the last time the keyboard worked was maybe Wine, but for sure I did a test install of my Baldur's Gate+ToSC disc and I attempted to install Daemon Tools Lite too. I've since uninstalled those two programs and even Wine itself without results. The only other thing I can think of is that I've been messing around with the /fstab file a lot trying to get all my drives/partitions to mount up at boot like I want but I don't know how that would impact the keyboard drivers.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am in the process of creating a kickstart configuration file for some RedHat 5.5 and Centos 5.5 servers (Production and test respectively).I have googled about a bit but I cannot find a good list of the bare minimum packages required for a command-line system.If anyone knows how I can trim this list down anymore it would be much appreciated. The aim of this kickstart.cfg is to get the system booted to a bare minimum required to install Chef (Server management software). Chef will then setup Apache, Ruby on rails environment etc.
All this server will need to do is, from a static IP, Host a Ruby on rails app, send emails, send data to a server on the web, accept ssh and occasionally and connect to a SMB/CIFS share This list was taken from the anaconda-ks.cfg file after a RedHat install of what I thought was a pretty minimal system onto a VM but I noticed that cups, the avahi daemonsand gam_server are installed and running which I do not believe are needed for a pure web server.I know that these types of questions are hard to answer without a complete knowledge of the operating environment and what "minimum" is in this case ("@core only? but I wanted yum damnit!")

I just booted ubuntu from a disk that I burned to try and salvage some files off a hard drive with a failed boot sector (maybe. not sure what the problem is,). Anyway, I can see the files, and I have a large portable hard drive that I can use (a MyPassport 320gig, if I recall correctly). I'm having trouble accessing the drive, and I think it might be because there's something popping up in the task bar that I can't see. Unfortunately, I can't see the task bar! My screen's resolution is off, and I'm having trouble adjusting it. I browsed the various settings and I couldn't figure out any way to change it.
Is there anything I can do? EDIT: Oops! I didn't look into the Monitors options... how embarrassing.
EDIT2: Okay, looks like I can mess about with the resolutions, but all of them still deny me access to the full screen - still can't see the task bar.

Information on the net seems very sparse or outdated for how to go about booting to a RAM disk. I need to be be able to boot a PC without a hard drive in it. I want to be able to PXE boot a PC and supply it with a RAM disk image that also contains the contents of the root file system (obviously stripped down enough to keep the file size small and the boot up time fast).What I have gathered so far is that I need to extract the contents of the initrd.img file, add files as necessary, and repackage the initrd.img file. What I get confused on is how to configure the kernel line parameters to tell it to boot to RAM and not the hard drive and how to go about modifying the init script in the initrd.img to not switch to the hard drive for the root file system. I can't find anything on the net that describes concrete steps on how to go about accomplishing all of this. I'm aware of the existence of Live CD's, but I need to be able to boot the PC without relying on a hard drive, CD, or any other external media. It needs to get all of its contents from the PXE boot server and boot to RAM only. I have the PXE boot side configured successfully. Also, putting the root file system on a NFS share is also out of the question.

With other words:
Can I backup a full linux system from a ext file system to a external ntfs partitioned disk using rsync -a (keeping all file permissions)?
Is something getting lost of a file (like permissions or anything... flags...) when copied / rsynced from ext to ntfs?
The thing is, that when I restore the stuff back from ntfs to ext, can I still use my system properly?
And can I backup files like photos from ext to ntfs without loosing any meta data?
Or asked more in general: What is the difference of a file on a ext partition compared to the same file on a ntfs partition?
I have been running Ubuntu as my sole OS for about a month now, and aside from Computer Janitor, I have found no drive/fs cleaning tools, or defragging tools. I know this isn't Windoze, but surely there must be a way of maintaining your hard disk. I mean installs/uninstalls must leave detritus, and file moving must cause SOME fragmentation. Are there any apps, systems or methods in place that provide this functionality?

I have a computer I recently uninstalled the operating system from and was wanting to use Linux Ubuntu. After burning the cd and trying to install it to the computer it gives me "Invalid System Disk, Replace then disk and press any key." The files total several gigabytes in size, but I can spare the RAM to keep them all mostly in memory. The machines this program runs on are typically Ubuntu Linux boxes.
Is there a way to configure the file system to have a very very large cache, and even to cache writes so they hit the disk later? I understand the issues with power loss or such, and am prepared to accept that. Crashing aside, in normal operation the writes should eventually reach the disk!Or is there a way to create a RAM disk that writes-through to real disk?

we have a Win NT4 system used for an important application used at two places. At one place it has gone bad. I want to create an image from good system and restore it at the second location. Is it possible to do this using "clonwzilla live cd"? Does it harm the good system? Can I save the created image to an USB drive?

I have read on other sites that Alt-F10 works but I think that is only for WIN because I can not get that to work. Is there an equivalent function with Linux.
