Apr 29, 2010This may be a rookie mistake, but I created a user (new user) in Linux on a Ubuntu system and didn't actually create the home directory for this user. Now, when I log in, it says there are problems... If I delete the path home/<new user> and try to log in the system tells me I can use root as home directory but I will likely experience problems, and then it won't let me log in. What is the best way to create this directory with the appropriate permissions? Should I just create another user and delete this one?

Give above folders, I will process files in 1/ at first, 2/ at second, 3/ at third, and so on.
For some n/ folder, if I realize that n/ actually does not exist in local file system, I do not want to wait for it. Hence I will keep processing (n+1)/ folder, and so on.
However, when processing some (n+m)/ folder, previously not processed n/ folder may have been created on local file system. In this case, I do not want to miss processing it, but somehow detect its creation and process it. After processing n/ folder, I want to continue from (n+m+1)/.

Sep 4, 2009I am trying to create an RPM package. However when the RPM package installs, it need to skip some files that might have been created by the user after the last installation and use of the program. Is there a way to build RPM package that just skips the user created content in the installation dir.
For example:
lets say my RPM package creates the following dir and creates files required by my application, say .app files.
/ppm/config/
However the user may also create a few .xml files in the same dir. How will I package my program that will not delete the .xml files from the above dir and will just create the application files (.app files).

I am not experimenting on a Production Server of NASA or any Security Concern Department. Friends, there is no harm in experimenting on your personal computer or on a test computer which is isolated from the production environment. Look at hackers! What do they do? If they don't know how security is breached then how would they come up with security measures?
If my question reads... "How to let any user perform Administrative Tasks on a Linux System irrespective of his/her privileges on that particular system?" then I would not get the right answers in the first place. They will say... "You are letting everyone destroy your system... are you sure you want to do that?" My question is: Why should we restrict ourselves from experimenting even if it sounds weird to other people?
I give you an example where it is desirable to let an unprivileged user perform certain tasks. You want to know if there are any employees in your office who are storing videos in their home directory and filling up the disk space to a great amount. Red Hat / Fedora :: Created A Script To FTP Some Files From A RHEL Box To A EMC NAS?
Jul 9, 2010I've created a script to FTP some files from a RHEL box to a EMC NAS and the script works because if I run it script manually it runs fine and transfers the files to the NAS but when I schedule it in the crontab the script runs but it doesn't transfer anything and I pipe the output of the cron job and I see message about 'passive mode refused' and lib: not a plain file, sys: not a plain file, etc...I did a vi ~/.netrc which contains the a single line of "machine xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx login ftpuser password xxx"
My script looks like:

Jan 30, 2011I was logged in, but had not used the computer for about 48 hours. When I 'woke' the system, I could see that Thunderbird and Firefox were active, just as I had left them. I moved the mouse, the screen went black and the mouse pointer was visible (and could move). The system stayed like this for about 2 minutes, then wend down completely. I cut power, booted and got the login screen. Each time I put in my password, it looks as if it is loading but then just goes right back to the login screen. I have no problem logging in as root.

Jan 21, 2011I cut paste sys folder, tmp folder, and many more folder to a backup storage place , after that folder icon and other icon converted into txt icon , i can make any folder but can't access, can't open storage, thrash disappear, terminal icon disappear, and also the application and places and system icons, after that someone suggested restarting may help but i can't restart it , so i unplugged the power wire and replugged it and restarted the system but it can't open , all things comes fail, and show INIT: "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes. after each 5 mins this msg is repeating

At the end of the installation, the system reboots until the mask 'user name' and 'password' will be displayed. When I edit my user-name and the password the system said, that the login is not correct.
First, I think, I have forgetten my password an do a new installation of Linus SUSE 11.2 . Whatever, the same problem ist still there.

Mar 3, 2010I have just bought a PC with SUSE 10.1-0. The first time I started the PC an installation menu appeared. I didn't define a user name, thinking that it should log in automatically (as in Windows occurs), but now I can't go farther from the Welcome screen, due to the system is asking me de user and password, but I didn't introduce nothing! Leaving username and password in blank didn't solve the matter.
I can see the admin screen (pressing F10) but I am not able to find any user to log (logically) and I can't include new users from there.
I have also tried to install Windows XP modifying the BIOS but the system returns a message (once in the WinXP installation program) about an error called 4096, about the file i386halaacpi.dll, which is unable to find (something about the HAL), so I am afraid that my (new) RAM memory is damaged.
What could I do? The system is for an old person, so I would like to install finally WinXP and delete Suse.

Feb 2, 2010For a month or so now, I have been enabling ssh and opening port 22. I cron'ed the start and stop commands to leave them open only a few hours a day. After a bit, I checked my logs to find that some IP or another was attempting to brute force my root account.
I took little real threat by the offense.
(1) my system does not allow root to login and
(2) it would cut them off sooner than later when my system issued the stop command.

Today I log in to find that all of my log files, as viewed from the gnome log file viewer, were empty of entries from about noon yesterday and prior.
Though I haven't noticed anything at all out of the ordinary with my system, I would like to get more opinions on the matter. Would there be any conceivable way that this was an automatic system routine, a clean up action of something? Additionally, if I was indeed the victim of a hack, what can I do to further protect my system (keeping in mind that I do want to access my system via ssh from time to time)?

(maybe relevant?: passive doesn't work) bob is jailed to his home directory, niomi is in ftp-special which gives her access to /. bob can't log in and his shell is set to bin/false. What could have gone wrong?

The Completely Fair Queuing (cfq) scheduler in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5appears to have worse I/O read performance than in version 4. It appears as though the Completely Fair Queuing I/O scheduler (cfq) has a regression and thus exhibits reduced read-side throughput which can affect performance for both local and NFS mounted file systems.
One way to mitigate this is to set the cfq's slice_idle parameter to zero. To change this value, execute the following command echo 0 > slice_idle in the /sys/block directory appropriate for your situation, as shown below:
echo 0 > /sys/block/hda/queue/iosched/slice_idle
We are using NFS file systems in RHEL 5.3. I would like to know how to find which /dev/Device is being used by the NFS file systems, so that I could try setting the slice_idle to '0' to see if there is any difference in performance? In /etc/fstab I only see the actual NAS volumes for the NFS file systems.
