CentOS 5 Networking :: Reboots Causes Unpredictable Enumeration Of Ethernet Drivers Causes Eth0 To Be Random?

Mar 20, 2009

I have several systems experiencing this issue, but the "worst case" system at the moment is a system where there are 2 dual-port PCI-X e1000 cards, and two on-board e1000e PCI-express card. What happens is maddening. If the /etc/sysconfig/hwconf is removed, and kudzu is not run, and the 6 interfaces each have a corresponding script:

/etc/sysconfig/network-script/ifcfg-eth0
/etc/sysconfig/network-script/ifcfg-eth1
/etc/sysconfig/network-script/ifcfg-eth2[code]...

Now what happens defies explanation. The only way I can be sure to make the e1000e first-listed-in-pci-order e1000e device always eth0 is to remake the initrd and add e1000e to the initrd. If I do not do that, eth0 might be the onboard night, it can also be the first port on either of the dual port cards. So eth0, eth2 and eth4 all take turns being eth0. This was not an issue in the EL-5.1 timeframe. This is certainly new to the EL-5.2 timeframe and thus far is not possible to control because the system does not load eth0's driver alias in order, and the enumeration of the PCI devices causes what seems to be random labeling of the first interface.

This is a particular problem in that identical hardware systems will come up with different eth0 interfaces , and on a single system, without the /etc/sysconfig/hwconf (which calls "eth0" something different from what was originally in the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 HWADDR directive).I need as little auto-magic as possible, I can live with PCI-bus order and driver load order is the order ethernet devices appear in, I cannot use the software in a state where what is "eth0" is randomly determined and the only way I can nail it down is to run kudzu, generate a hwconf AND brand the network interfaces in the network-scripts with HWADDR. I've been using EL since 6.2 and this is the first time I've ever encountered a situation where the enumeration rules (which are ancient at this point) over-ridden by something.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): EL-5.2 series. The random enumeration of PCI devices and the subsequent assigning of eth0 to a random NIC is not on every reboot, and does not seem tied to a power off scenario vs a simple reset or warm reboot. Over the course of 0 reboots , eth0 should have moved between 2-3 times.Packages that seem relevant.

Fedora :: F13 Crashes And Reboots Because Of Java?

Jun 16, 2010

I've had this problem bugging me for quite a while now, even in F12. What happens is that while using Firefox to browse certain sites that use java Fedora suddenly crashes and the computer reboots. I previously used openjdk, now recently i've installed Sun java (as shown here [URL] - both on F13 i386 & x86_64. I even did a clean reinstall of F13 but nothing changed. For example when I go to this site - [URL] after a while (not more than 30 seconds) Fedora crashes and pc reboots. Hell, it has even crashed a few times while browsing this forum. When I disable Firefox java plugin (from add-ons ->plugins) it still crashes after a while. For the particular site I've looked up that several ad-related javascripts are being loaded (also on fedoraforum). I really want to use Fedora but I just can't do it like this. Is there a way to make it usable?

Ubuntu Servers :: 10.04 Shutdowns After Idle For A Couple Of Minutes?

Oct 12, 2010

I've Ubuntu Server 10.04 and am just using the terminal, no GUI like Gnome. So far it's working pretty great except for one big thing.

Whenever I go to sleep and there's no activity on my servers (it's not a big site so active users drop to 0 during the night), the server kind of disconnects. The only thing that can bring the site back online is to restart the whole server. I've tried disabling powersaving by using setterm but that changes nothing. Even if I wake up the server by pressing any key or so the site wont go back online!

I've tried just restarting both Apache and MySQL (I'm using LAMP-server btw) but not even that works. But as soon as I turn the power off and on at the server, everythings work like normal for a couple of minutes of inactivity (~5-15 minutes I'd guess) and then it's down again unless someone logs in to the site and is active.

I can login, and navigate for a little bit, then it just randomly freezes. I've booted to both gnome and KDE, kde freezes almost immediately w/o letting me navigate much. Gnome takes a bit and then freezes on me. I managed to login once and go like 6 minutes then i thought it was worked out, rebooted and boom, froze up again. I can still move my mouse but can't click or use keyboard. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace doesn't work either .....

Fedora :: F12 - Hangs At Random ?

Dec 31, 2009

About a week after I installed F12 on a brand new system, a friend came over and went on to play poker on facebook. At some point he yelled that the PC froze. I was working on another machine at the time and tried to ssh to the supposedly hung system, but couldn't; Except for playing poker he had audacious open and about 3 seconds of the song that was playing at the time of the hang, kept looping. Neither Ctrl+Alt+Backspace nor any of the Alt+SysRq combos had any effect whatsoever, so I had to press the reset button (and I have to say this was the first time I had to do so in linux after almost a decade of using it, save for a hiccup with my first gentoo kernel).

The system usually freezes if there are two or more sound streams, but that is not always the case. The best way to get the system to crash is by playing something in audacious or rhythmbox while seeking through a video in mplayer or vlc or having flash content appear in firefox (I am using adobe's latest 64-bit flash plug-in and have been using it without any problems -though on other systems- since F10). Also most but not all the times the system is going to hang, there are a few skips in audacious every ~10-30 minutes. I've been getting the lock-ups with every kernel released so far.

My system logs don't contain any useful info after each hang; there are however certain problems mentioned in syslog which I thought they could be relevant, but they always appear whether the system works fine or not, namely the following:

Code:

I used to get a lot more of these with previous kernels:

Code:

Code:

This one appeared every now and then until Dec 25:

Code:

And this one is always there:

Code:

Finally, at every boot I get this from abrtd, but it doesn't seem to be related:

Code:

Yesterday, I devoted the entire day to hunting down the culprit, but I couldn't get the system to hang; I had rhytmbox, audacious, totem, vlc, mplayer and vlc all playing music and videos simultaneously from local disks, network shares and through upnp, I got myself a facebook account in order to play that zynga poker thing, I upgraded alsa-lib to 1.0.22 from updates-testing, rebooted countless times, but the system didn't hang nor did any of the above messages disappear.
Today as I was browsing through some web pages, one of which had an interactive flash ad, while listening to music and the system froze again.

Fedora Servers :: Random Segfaults In The F10?

Mar 31, 2009

I have a new IBM x3650 that I am trying to get installed and running. However, it seems to experience random segfaulting. Fedora :: Random Freezes Lead To Restarts

Nov 6, 2009

It's been freezing on me like you wouldn't believe today, and I think it has something to do with the load put on the CPU by various sites. The trouble is, I need to access a few of these sites to do my work. WordPress is one of them. I've had to restart the computer five times via SysRq keys since when these freezes happen, I can't Ctrl-Alt-Backspace out of it (even with zap enabled) and I can't bring up a terminal or Alt-F2 to kill process. I can't switch processes, windows, or anything. Firefox just sits there and laughs at me as I threaten to bust the screen in half.

And the real funny thing is, people actually say this is a better browser than IE. I never had these problems on Windows. What can I do to stop this? Do I just have to switch to another browser?

Fedora :: Random Firefox Crash - How To Debug

Feb 17, 2010

My firefox (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.6) Gecko/20091216 Fedora/3.5.6-1.fc11 Firefox/3.5.6) on Gnome 2.26.3 will randomly crash, without any errors. /var/log/messages & /var/log/Xorg.0.log doesn't show anything that caused any errors. And it doesn't matter on which website(s) I'm busy with, it will just crash.

My PC has:

Intel Pentium(R) Dual-Core E5200 CPU
4GB DDRII Corsair RAM
3x 160GB SATAII HDD
Asus Nvidia 8800GT graphics card.

I have updated to the latest nVidia drivers

[root@Rudi-PC ~]# dmesg | grep nvidia
nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel.
nvidia 0000:01:00.0: setting latency timer to 64

[code]....

This is on Fedora Core 12 x86 I have disabled the only 3 Firefox plug-ins that I installed yesterday, but this problem has been looming for a long time. Something interesting that I picked up is that Thunderbird will close randomly (very seldom though) as well, so I don't know if it's Firefox specific though.

I have picked up that it happens more often when my PC's memory usage is above 2GB RAM, and memtest86+ didn't indicate any memory problems. If I have less tabs open, it happens less often, but the more tabs I have open, the more often it happens. At the same time, on the same PC, when I'm in Windows XP SP3 (dual boot), I can have many more tabs open as well as Thunderbird, Quickbooks, Photoshop CS3 and some other applications, and it doesn't cash.

Fedora :: Random And Annoying System Freezes In F13

Aug 7, 2010

I'm getting very random full system freezes with F13. The keyboard stops responding completely. Sometimes the mouse (and the mouse only) still works. I those cases, I can log in via ssh, kill kdm, and everything goes back to normal until the next freeze. However, in most cases, I have to do a hard reboot. Sometimes the system goes on for days without a problem, and sometimes it freezes 10 times in a day (It's in one of those days that the bug-screen saved me from flying out the window). I also had this problem on F12. I'm not sure if its video-driver related as both nvidia and nouveau experience this behaviour. In fact, I'm not at all sure what the cause may be.
