My server has the last couple of days had 3-4 random shutdowns. Where can i find the reason?hich logs etc. Im pretty sure its not power failure since my other devices hasnt lost power.. alarm clocks etc.
View 4 RepliesI've installed fedora 11 (GNOME) on my laptop. It sometimes reboot itself. The screen goes black and reboots(sometimes just turn off!) Palimpsest Disk Utility reports HDD bad sector but when I run memtest, everything looks fine. Windows xp does not have this kind of problem before I use fedora

View 9 Replies View RelatedI've Ubuntu Server 10.04 and am just using the terminal, no GUI like Gnome. So far it's working pretty great except for one big thing.
Whenever I go to sleep and there's no activity on my servers (it's not a big site so active users drop to 0 during the night), the server kind of disconnects. The only thing that can bring the site back online is to restart the whole server. I've tried disabling powersaving by using setterm but that changes nothing. Even if I wake up the server by pressing any key or so the site wont go back online!
I've tried just restarting both Apache and MySQL (I'm using LAMP-server btw) but not even that works. But as soon as I turn the power off and on at the server, everythings work like normal for a couple of minutes of inactivity (~5-15 minutes I'd guess) and then it's down again unless someone logs in to the site and is active.
When using Amarok in Kubuntu 10.10, the player will shut down after no specific reason. Sometimes if saving a playlist and sometimes when the player changes from one track to another. I presume this is a bug but sadly i do not have regular access to the internet so my system is sometimes up to a month old but no more.
Has anyone experienced similar performance when using Amarok with Kubuntu?
Using 11.2 on self-built pc with AMD 9950 on Asus M3n78 Pro mobo. Boot drive is sata, with an external ntfs 1.5 tb USB/firewire/externalSATA connection (using USB at the moment.) nVidia 9800 GT video card (8300 gt on mobo.)It takes literally hours to boot up and more hours to shutdown this system.e point I am ready to hit hardware reset to continue. This is the 5th cycle with the same problem recurring each time, except sometimes boot occurs in a normal amount of time, but shutdown/reboot always takes hours.

I use the command "rcalsasound restart" which works well or "/etc/init.d/alsasound restart" but I lose the volume control during the operation. Moreover, I have a dell laptop with sound keys and naturally it doesn't work to. Do you know how to restart the volume control applet? And I'd like to know why these commands don't start also the volume control (I'd like to know a bit more how it works).
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo I built a new system few months to act as a development/"mess around with" server with an Asus Mobo and a Q6600 processor and 8 gigs of ram. Along with file, web and app hosting, I also do some virtualization on it... or atleast I had hoped to.
Ever since the first install, I've been randomly getting crashes and lockups. Sometimes it would just dump an error to the screen but stay alive, and sometimes it would dump an error and then lock up fully. The error mentions something about "kernel not tainted" etc. I will post the detailed error once it comes up again, as I have just formatted it again.
Other problems include downloaded files becoming corrupt. Files downloaded through any means (wget, torrents, ssh, ftp etc.) seem to randomly get corrupted (ie: the hashes are wrong).
I currently have one WD 150GB raptor as my primary OS partition, and 3 WD 1TB greens as my storage in an mdadm raid 5 array. At first, I had thought it was the raid array or it's drives causing issues. After painfully transfering the data off of it, I took the drives out and tried to run ubuntu with just the OS drive for a while. This still had the same issues. I then put in only one of the 1TB greens and had the same issue...
I downloaded WD's hardware diagnostic tool and ran full scans on all the drives. They all check out fine.
I left memtest running overnight and it had no errors either.
Most recently, ubuntu would not even install. It would get stuck at the stage of partitioning, and the keyboard lights would flash. After much googling, I tried popping in "noapic nolapic" to the end of the grub string, and it managed to install.
Now, I'm in a fresh system and just wgetted vmware server. However, it wont untar, I just realized the MD5 hash doesn't match!
So definately not the memory or the hds... I'm assuming it has to do with the APIC? From what I found on google, it seems as though this is only needed for the install.
Do I really need this to be on the boot string too? From what I understand, APIC allows processes to be divided out to the least loaded CPU. Having a quad core, I'd rather leave this on since it seems somewhat beneficial... I have yet to try putting this into the grub yet since I'm offsite and need

when i assign ip manually to a machine it gets ping by server and it also itself pings server but when i chose to use client machine as dhcp , so that it can directly get assigned ip from server, it does not get ip, instead random ip is provided which is out of range specified at server side in /etc/dhcpd.conf file.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI configured a Postfix Server to relay the messages to an Exchange Server. To keep it simple I configured all my users locally and I setup local .forward files in their home folders, specifying their local Exchange address.
Everything seemed to work fine (for years now), until I upgraded postfix in October, 23rd 2010.
Alas, lately I noticed that, since then, even if I just realized it now, sometimes the server seems not to use the .forward file and tries to use the local delivery using cyrus, which does not find a local mail folder (obviously, since I never created them as I didn�t want to) and replies to the sender with a "550-Mailbox unknown" error. Today I enabled the "-v" mode for "local" in master.cf the debugging the problem a bit better, to see what's the problem.
If I was sure about the problem being the postfix version (2.3.3, which is way too old now!), I'd give it a try and substitute it with the latest 2.8.2 (even if the server is a production server and is almost untouchable).
Following the error and my main.cf and master.cf setup files:
Aprox. 1 time per day / every two days hangs the x-server. It hangs a few secs then is being killed and restarted. A popup window in the task bar tells me the restart of the x-server. After that about 15 sec. I can continue to work but sometimes the gtk2 apps lose their integrity thus I have to restart by logging off and in again.

I have been having this problem for about two weeks now where Debian's network and internet connection randomly fails. It works perfectly fine and hosts all the services I need for a while, and then without warning all network connectivity fails. I can't ping any other network device. Regardless of how much I try to fix it, the only thing that works is restarting the computer. First, the server went 7 days without a problem; then 5 days; now it lasted 2 days. I'm having a strange problem on some of our Debian servers. It all started about three weeks ago when we moved our virtual environment (VMWare ESX3) from a SAN to a NAS (NetApp). At first I thought it had to do with that move but since the other 9 servers are working perfectly I eliminated that idea. For over a year all 12 Debian 5 servers have been working great without mentionable failures. All servers are (where) up to date with the latest patches. About three weeks ago I started having kernel panics with the following message on three of our servers:

Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt and other times it looks like just a dump of hexadecimal data. The only difference between those 3 servers is that they have several mounted shares connecting to the NAS using CIFS. So I was thinking that it might have to do with an update of some kind in regards to smb. I recovered an image from a month ago, before the troubles began, copied over the data and MySQL databases and configured the 'old environment with recent data' exactly the same with MySQL master-master replication, document synchronization and load balancing. This task I performed last night (no other way since it's a production environment). Up to this time neither of the two 'restored' servers had a kernel panic. The one that has not been restored is having one at random about every hour and a half. Following are the different versions between the 'at this time' working server(s) and the failing one:

I have set up a software raid 5 and a software raid 1 on the same 3 disks.
But my problem is, every couple of days the software raid starts automatically resyncing. This resync is always succesful.
I do not know why this happens, any ideas to troubleshoot this further? I can not see an error in /var/log/messages
I'm having a very strange problem with my ubuntu apache2 server running wordpress. i want do download media files (from within a flash-mp3-player onsite or by link [url]) but the file transfer just stops after a while. (at least sometimes) at random positions. after that i have to clear the browsers cache and try again.
It is really annoying, though it is my band's website and we want to share our songs with our friends. i checked from several clients, seems to happen everywhere (linux, mac or windows clients)

All went smoothly, and almost everything is working fine.I have had my X server crash twice since then, both times when I simply doubleclicked a running application. There is some indication of problems in the Xorg.log file, but it's not helpful to me -- can you help me understand?

the upgrade went fine and only had a few minor problems that were easy fixes. Like the Minimize, Maximize, Close on the left. Not good and fixed that right away. Today was the second time I have had a "random logout"I will be surfing the web and when I move my pointer on the touch pad of my laptop the screen goes black and I hear the sound of a logout. When I log back in and open Firefox my stuff is still there but this is very annoying. Is there any fix for this?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI've been using Ubuntu for a while now, and ever since I installed 10.10 (I did a clean install) I've been having problems with the computer completely locking up... nothing is responsive. I've not had this problem on any prior Ubuntu version. The problem started after I installed the updates for ubuntu... I have a hunch that its either the nvidia driver i installed or the latest kernel thats causing the problem. I'm using the proprietary driver for nvidia and my card is a GeForce6100 nForce 405... the kernel 2.6.35-22... as you can imagine its quite annoying having the computer lock up.. P.S.- the freezes aren't exactly random, they happen generally when I'm using high CPU %'s (e.g. when i import all my music at once to rhythmbox and playing spring rts)

It's like browsing internet, a few other applications opened an out of nowhere a black screen an command boot load and then log in screen asking for password. This has been happening since I installed natty. I experience any kind of crash alert, freezing or slowdown before it happens, just out of the sudden it happens.
Any advice, help? How do I report a bug without a clear idea of what's going on?
Gotta rewrite everything i just wrote, because it actuall froze while i was typing this. Anyways, recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 and its had nasty freezing issues from the start. When it freezes, i cant move the mouse, none of the cap locks, number lock or scroll locks work. It will put any sounds playing into a small loop, and my mouse freezes. im forced to hard reset my computer everytime. Its 100% random too, not caused by a program, as far as i know.

Every now and then, for seemingly no reason at all, the screen will go black and after a few seconds I find myself at the login screen. I've kept track of when it happens and there is seemingly no pattern to it; sometimes it will happen when I'm watching a video, sometimes it just happens when I'm browsing the internet, and sometimes it happens when I'm not doing anything.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been using Ubuntu on and off since 8.04, but only last week decided to make a real switch across to it.After installing 9.10 64bit though, my laptop while running Ubuntu just turns itself off at completely random times - it doesn't seem to go through any shut down procedure or anything, it's more like the power's just suddenly cut. It sometimes happens 5 minutes after being turned on, or sometimes 4 or 5 hours, it really is random.I really have no idea where to even begin trying to stop this. I think it must be a software thing because this has never happened with windows or earlier versions of Ubuntu, but other than that I don't know what to do to stop this.I'm dual booting Windows 7 32bit and Ubuntu 9.10 64bit, and this is on a Toshiba L350-D 11-D laptop, which has a 64bit AMD processor.

Closing it doesn't prevent it from popping up on next startup.
There doesn't appear to be any option to "Don't show on startup."
When I go to System -> System Settings -> Advanced -> Autostart, it does not appear under Desktop File. The only thing that appears under "Script File" is gtk-2-engines-qtcurve.rc.sh gtk2engines... which does not appear to be the issue.
I'm guessing there's a shell command that will give me a more in-depth look at what should and should not run upon startup? Would really like to startup with a clean screen!
