I'm niomi and I'm the first account with sudo. I add an account, bob. niomi can get in reliably on active mode. (maybe relevant?: passive doesn't work) bob is jailed to his home directory, niomi is in ftp-special which gives her access to /. bob can't log in and his shell is set to bin/false. What could have gone wrong?
View 3 RepliesI have a real system user say 'test', created in a number of system groups, up to 3 additional groups (including ftp of course). Its set to the usual standard directory /home/test. But what if I wanted to use /home/test as their home directory but login to what would be unknown to them to be ProFTP to make them go in say [URL] or something random like that, how is this done? Just been through things like this:

I got Fedora 10 and I installed a proftpd server it works in local network but not from outside. Actually I can see it checks for user and pass but when it has to list the user dir it freeze. The server is behind a router. I am using passive ports 60000-60100 and I forwarded all connections to and from 21 to 60000-60100 onto internal (192.168.0.109) IP address.

Alright I have read through and tried many different tutorials but a VAST majority of them are with virtual users. This is my own personal email server so virtual users is unneccessary when I can just use the users personal mailbox.
My postfix main.cf there are 2 things I am unsure of. 1) For system users which local_recipiant_maps do i use? 2) What should mynetworks be?As I have been testing it out through telnet I can send mail but it doesnt get to my test email (a gmail account) and when i try to send an email locally it seems that everything works fine but the mail doesnt get there, and the error i am getting is that it cant find the user.
I built a 11.04 server system in vmware workstation a few days ago, set it up for something and now I have a strange problem. It boots without problem. I can login via ssh, the services run and everything is OK from the outside. But on the console there's just a fast blinking cursor on the screen, no login or anything to that affect. Just blank and a blinking cursor.
View 7 Replies View Relatedwe have a server running with Suse linux many years. Meanwhile we changed server hardware about 4 times, mostly also updating to newest Suse version. We used to copy group, passwd and shadow to a backup medium, installed the new system and restored those files onto the new system and all was running fine. Now, some weeks ago we installed 11. on new hardware and after restoring those 3 files after rebooting the system hangs when starting GUI. I can boot into runlevel 3 and login with no problem, but when I boot into runlevel 5 mouse and keyboard are frozen. Also when starting GUI from runlevel 3 with startx mouse and keyboard immediately freeze. If I restore the files group, passwd and shadow as they came from fresh new installation I can reboot and login in runlevel 5 without problems.
OK, if I compare the userlist, as it is generated bei installation,there are some usernames I formerly not had in older Suse versions. I don�t know if this can make problems? I tried to edit the files, to combine the system users from 11.2 with the list of local user names from the old system but without success, again the mouse and keyboard freeze.So some questions arise:1) Why now mouse and keyboard freeze in xsystem, when there are changes in the user list (but only in runlevel 5)2) What is the correct way to save and restore users and groups from old to new system. I googled several hours but did not find a smart way. Maybee someon can point me to a link or a howto where I find the solution

View 8 Replies View RelatedWe have a backup program that works with HP's ultrium tapes that whenever it's failing it's sending an error to the root's system logs. Now if I run mutt as root I can see the system logs and it's very easy to pinpoint any backup error messages.
Is there any way to copy all these system messages to another user as well so that someone with no root access could run mutt as well and check for these logs daily?
I want to password protect say a subdirectory, or a subdomain via vhost, with a username/password, but use the systems users and passwords as logins -> I want go avoid any and all .htaccess... as everyone should be doing anyway How would I go about doing this? I know my way around the apache configs fairly well, so I'm not a total newb -> I now I can use .useraccess and .pwaccess but that's flat file driven, not based off of the systems users/passwords.

Kuser no longer works for 'rob' but still works for 'robert' & 'root'. It launches (i.e. the cursor bounces up & down and a Kuser box appears in the task bar) but the Kuser screen never opens. Finally, the bouncing cursor disappears as well as the Kuser box in the task bar.

I often get responses from people who first say: "Are you sure? You want your network to be exposed to the outside world?" I am not experimenting on a Production Server of NASA or any Security Concern Department. Friends, there is no harm in experimenting on your personal computer or on a test computer which is isolated from the production environment. Look at hackers! What do they do? They will say... "You are letting everyone destroy your system... are you sure you want to do that?" My question is: Why should we restrict ourselves from experimenting even if it sounds weird to other people?

We have a small cluster of 20 HP systems, all running CentOS 5.3 in an NFS-root environment. Half are quad-socket, quad-core Xeon E7340 @ 2.40GHz (total 16 cores), the other half are 8-socket, quad-core Opteron 8354 (total 32 cores). All systems have a Mellanox Infiniband adapter ("Mellanox Technologies MT25418 [ConnectX VPI PCIe 2.0 2.5GT/s - IB DDR / 10GigE] (rev a0)")
With kernel 2.6.18-128.1.6.el5, infiniband works fine on all systems.
With the update to kernel 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5 (and both types of node running the same NFS-root image), the 16-core Xeons still work fine. Infiniband no longer works on the 32-core Opterons. Specifically, either the ib0 interface fails to appear, or it does appear but when configured with an IP address, doesn't actually work. In either case, loading the IB kernel modules takes a long time, but I haven't instrumented the load script yet to see which module, if any, is at fault. More errors listed below.
However, if I tweak the BIOS of the 32-core systems to reduce the per-socket core count to 2 (so effectively 8-socket, dual-core, down to a total of 16 available cores), Infiniband starts working again. Putting it back to 32-cores makes it fail. Booting the older kernel makes it work again. In summary: old kernel, IB works on all systems. Newer kernel, IB only works on 16-core systems.
Updating the IB firmware from 2.5.0 to 2.7.0 (latest available) doesn't help. I also did a full 'yum update' to make sure that libmlx4, openibd all other associated packages were up-to-date. Doesn't help either.

I have been using proftp for about 8 months. After getting the configuration right, it worked perfectly. It is only used intermittently, so I don't know for sure when the problems started, but I suspect it was triggered by a recent OS upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 (64 bit). I have proftp set up so that TLS is required on both the data and control channels. The problem is that, after successful login, the server seems to be terminating the session because the client (FileZilla) is attempting to renegotiate something (probably the TLS). The client settings didn't change, nor did the server settings.
I have tried switching off the TLSRequired flag, and am then able to establish a non-secure FTP session which works (but that does not meet my requirements). I wondered whether the OS upgrade had somehow invalidated my TLS certificates, but the symptoms don't seem consistent with that cause. The TLS part of my proftpd.conf file is:

I have Ubuntu 10.04.2 (Linux 2.6.32-33-server on x86_64) with OpenLDAP 2.4.21 and Webmin1.550. I converted my ldap database from another system with the older style schema (OpenLDAP 2.3.3 with slightly older Webmin version 1.480) and no longer use slapd.conf, but the newer slapd.d format.
It all works fine except for one thing. When I add a new user, it lets me type in the additional LDAP fields:
But when I click the Create button, all the fields get jumbled together in the Title/Position box with a diamond question mark delimiting the fields:
Modifying existing users (which have the Additional fields displaying correctly) also has the same result - it moves the fields all into the one Title/Position box with the diamond shapes with question marks inside between each entry. Is it a problem with my schema files? I tried reverting to the older shema files and slapd.conf and it still did the same thing on the new system. I am really at a loss.
Here is also the output of ldapsearch for that user (host and samba ids are sanitized):
Previously added users that show the fields properly have "description:" and then the field listed for each Additional LDAP field. Also shouldn't the "title" be visible in plain human readable text here? - it looks like it encrypted it somehow - similar to a password hash. The older system works fine and the fields are all readable and in their proper locations. But the new system just doesn't work right.
how to export normal unix user to ldap I've unbuntu ldap server with some local users. I want to export all my local users to ldap database as a ldap users. Or if there is any configuration so that when ever a normal user is created then automatically an ldap user with the same name as the normal user will be created
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an external CD drive. When I run put a CD in and close the drive in XP, VLC loads the movie.
In Ubuntu when I close the drive the CD icon with the name of the movie appears on the Desktop, the file information appears in the file browser, and "encouraging" noises are made by the CD player. VLC however will not load the CD whether through this way or through loading it then selecting the CD. After 30 seconds the CD stops running and nothing is loaded.
Any ideas?
What is irritating is that this works perfectly in XP but not in Ubuntu which is always touted as being better than XP.
I have Ubuntu server 10.04 joined to a domain using Likewise Open. I can login using my domain credentials and have added my domain account to the sudoers file. Now that I've got it joined to the domain I want to add some samba shares and have domain members use their accounts to access them. However, no matter what combination of my domain name and the domain user or group I use in the valid users field it won't let me in. What's the proper way of inputting a domain user or group in the valid user field?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI upgraded my system from 8.04 to 10.04.Now I keep getting errors saying that my adobe nonfree installation is bad. The worst part is that when I try to uninstall the Adobe package to start from scratch, it says that the problem is so bad that it can't be uninstalled, but must be re-installed.Of course when I try to re-install it, I get errors saying it's corrupt.I'm caught in a chicken and egg situation here.
Also, sound no longer works on my system.I think this is most likely a symptom of the first problem, but I'll just put it out there.I've read the other threads explaining how to fix this, but nothing works.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm building a small web gui to connect a 3g modem with wvdial via web interface using perl cgi. Which permissions I should use. Now when doing "wvdial 3gconnect" from the perl script it don't have permission to do anything, reading config files, accessing the modem etc.
Its just a little raspberry with only 1 user not available from the internet so its not a problem with loose security. Is there some easy way to let the www-data user get system wide permission without setting the permissions on each thing it should access?
I want to upload some files via ftp and after that to access them via http (i have apache2 installed and configured properly) I can't use a ftp with system users because they are located in home.. it should be something with virtual users but the problem with be the file permissions.
