I just recently upgraded to Natty and I'm having a fairly annoying issue with Gnome and Fluxbox. There will be random intervals where I'll hit the enter key and my desktop environment will just quit out without any warning. Now this is becoming a huge nuisance because I use time tracking software for work and I essentially lose time because once the environment crashes, the time is not saved.
View 9 RepliesOnce every, say, 12 hours of use, I find that the mouse cursor spontaneously becomes unresponsive. The rest of the system is fine, and it responds to the keyboard, but the mouse does nothing. I'm pretty sure this isn't a problem with the mouse itself, because when it happens I've tried unplugging the mouse and plugging in a different one, and the problem persists. The problem doesn't seem to be correlated with any particular program or type of activity. I realize that this probably isn't much to go on. The next time it happens, is there at least anything I can do by way of diagnosis?

The playlists I build in Banshee directly are not suffering this emptying problem. (There is one imported playlist, of some 30+, which has not yet emptied but I see nothing special about it.)

What's bugging me is that at random intervals, my screen shuts off while the laptop is still running, forcing me to hard reset.

At random intervals the video output is turned off for 2 - 3 seconds giving a black screen. (I suspect the 2 - 3 second blank time is how long it takes the monitor to recover after a loss of input signal.) The interval between events can vary from 1 minute to an hour to more than a week, and recently more than a month. Sometimes I get several per hour; other times not for two weeks. Hmm, there was a kernel update in the last week or so.At one time the cause was pointed at a USB driver problem since a number of USB log entries occurred at the same time as the screen blanking. That is not the case here;here is nothing in </var/log/messages> (or the dmesg output) that is anywhere near when a screen event happens.
I am running a headless Ubuntu 10.04 server with the 2.6.32-28-generic kernel. For what I can figure out no single direct cause I get a high load average and the following syslog output at random intervals. Generally the load average will drop back down to normal however the kernel errors will still continue What little I have been able to find has pointed to memory issues. I am not totaly convinced this is the cause as the server will be showing >50% free when the errors are happening.

I seem to be having a problem on the new Kernel (2.6.35-23) with the system randomly freezing.
I have installed a number of things in recent days leading up to this problem, but when i boot with the old kernel i don't seem to have any issues. From this i am guessing its the new kernel.
The freezing seems (although i am not sure) to be worse when Rhythmbox is running. When it happens everything freezes, the playing song skips, replaying the same one second of music over and over. All the hotkeys stop and the mouse cursor stops responding.
I have seen people talking about system logs to look at system crashes but i don't know how to show those. I also doubt my ability to interpret them.
My firefox (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.6) Gecko/20091216 Fedora/3.5.6-1.fc11 Firefox/3.5.6) on Gnome 2.26.3 will randomly crash, without any errors. /var/log/messages & /var/log/Xorg.0.log doesn't show anything that caused any errors. And it doesn't matter on which website(s) I'm busy with, it will just crash.
My PC has:

This is on Fedora Core 12 x86 I have disabled the only 3 Firefox plug-ins that I installed yesterday, but this problem has been looming for a long time. Something interesting that I picked up is that Thunderbird will close randomly (very seldom though) as well, so I don't know if it's Firefox specific though.
I have picked up that it happens more often when my PC's memory usage is above 2GB RAM, and memtest86+ didn't indicate any memory problems. If I have less tabs open, it happens less often, but the more tabs I have open, the more often it happens. At the same time, on the same PC, when I'm in Windows XP SP3 (dual boot), I can have many more tabs open as well as Thunderbird, Quickbooks, Photoshop CS3 and some other applications, and it doesn't cash.
has someone tested new beta of Skype on Fedora 14 ? Have you noted some crash during the account connection ?

View 2 Replies View RelatedAprox. 1 time per day / every two days hangs the x-server. It hangs a few secs then is being killed and restarted. A popup window in the task bar tells me the restart of the x-server. After that about 15 sec. I can continue to work but sometimes the gtk2 apps lose their integrity thus I have to restart by logging off and in again.

I'm toying around with fluxbox and like it's speed and simplicity. However, the gnome-panel is great and I would like to use it in fluxbox. Specifically, I like its system monitor, typing break, gnubiff and clock (which world clock support). My question is: if I'm running the gnome-panel in fluxbox will this degrade performance, for example, since the gnome-panel needs to load all the gnome related libraries etc.? One of the main reasons I'm looking into fluxbox is for speed so I don't want to lose that just because of the panel.

At random times (approx. once a day), my whole ubuntu/gnome interface freezes. mouseover-animiations (for example on the icons in the taskbar) keep working, but clicking doesn't do anything anymore. On the keyboard, tab and arrows keeps working, but most other keys don't do anything. The only option seems to be to reboot. After that reboot everything is fine again (for a while)
Once the freeze happens, it freezes both the standard ubuntu panels but also the program I have open at that moment. It doesn't seem to be connected to a specific program I run.
Is there some log, or anything else that I can use to figure out where these freezes are coming from?
About 1-2 times a day (3 today and it's just 9 AM here...) Gnome 3 decides to just not care about me any more, crashes and logs me out. No warning, no error on screen, just some black screen with text (like when shutting down the computer and it's stopping services) which lasts half a second, then back to the login screen.
Any ideas what might be wrong or where I could find some logs to post them here?
(Using Ver. 10.04-lucid lynx) This is because, at random, Gnome environment will have some kind of problem, leaving me with a black screen, like the terminal but not it, where I can enter my password and that's just about all. There seems to be no way to enter the graphical linux environment. I was forced to wipe the hard drive clean twice because of this and both times I reinstalled lucid lynx.

- accept command line arguments
- accept files & dirs with spaces in the name
- catch most errors or use the defaults.

After a crash I cannot log in to the GNOME environment anymore, after entering the password the login animation is being displayed for a while and then screen returns to gdm. GNOME failsafe works fine. I don't know what information may be useful to debug this problem. ~/.xsession-errors contains

I'm using Gnome Time Tracker 2.3.0 to track the time I spend on projects, it works fine except that my system just crashed and it does not show my recently tracked projects any more. does any one know of a way I can get this information back, it's quite important.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've just installed F14 64bit on my desktop and I tried to run Open Office Writer. As a result, GNOME crashed and the rendering of the desktop was messed up. I had to force a reboot, and now everytime I login the Open Office recover dialog causes a crash again. I suppose it has something to do with the opensource nvdia drivers and OO.o's toolkit but I can't look at it with the crash-on-login thingy there (I suppose I can install the closed source drivers from a tty now that I am thinking it again....)

Since I enjoyed Gnome shell with Ubuntu 9.10 (but Ubuntu runs too slow on this computer for my druthers), I thought it would be fun to check out gnome shell on 11.3. I thought that since my 11.3 has gnome 2.30, that the gnome shell in the software manager would be a concomitant version, so I installed it. I then followed the directions given in the second posting of Enabling Gnome Shell in 11.3?
When I logged back in, I selected Gnome 3 Preview [even though I hadn't thought that that was what I'd installed -- (has openSUSE retired all older versions of Gnome shell?)]. The desktop won't boot (I don't know what the correct way of saying it is). The splash shows, but the icons just intermittently flash off and on at random intervals, never quite making it all the way "on." When I right click the bottom of the screen, I can select "terminal" (when I can accurately coordinate my double-click with the random, intermittent flashing), but then the terminal also does the random, intermittent flashing as well. So I can never get anything typed in. When I reboot, there's no login box.
Fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04, Gnome session fails to start. Gnome-failsafe and XFCE work great. xsession-errors: [URL].... i also cannot switch between ttys, if i do video becomes blured to the point of unreadable. I think this is an issue with X. I have tried the generic kernel (non-pae) with noapic and apci=off with no results.

I am thinking i can use the ps -aux command but not sure on how i would specify the time intervals. Is there another way? I really want to see the CPU, disk usuage and memory.
View 9 Replies View RelatedSince upgrading to Lucid a few days ago I'm having intermittent problems (90% of the time)with opening OpenOffice files.When I open up a spreadsheet (.ods) in OO, (whether OO was already open or not) my screens go black, then flash on and off for 30 seconds (ish) as if trying to change the refresh rate.Sometimes this results in Gnome crashing and restarting itself. it settles down and is OK. On a few occasions I have had to change terminal and manually restart gdm.

I've just installed a new Debian Jessie with gnome from zero, and I have installed Xbmc on it. when I open xbmc on gnome interface, it crash and log out from gnome.
On the xbmc crash log I find several errors, browsing them on the network I didn't find anything.

I'm looking for a script that copies a random .jpg from a random folder in my ~/Pictures folder to my ~/temp folder with a standard filename. This file will then be displayed in Conky. I can fix the last part, but I cannot find a way to do the first part.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've just installed F15 over the weekend, and since then I've been having stability issues - primarily it seems to be related to gnome 3 (I've used fedora since its early days, and have never had such stability issues in the prior versions). Basically, when I use gnome-tweak-tool to make a modification, the system crashes; and I have to completely shut off the unit (unplug it) for it to even boot up properly. Today, I tried to change one of the options from its default, and now the very top (black bar) won't show.
I'm in the "File Manager" mode and can see the "Computer", "home" and "Trash" icons. I can move them about; and click on any of them to open. But once they're open nothing else works (clicking on any of the directories, etc, has no effect). I can ctl-alt-F2; but that's the extent. I deleted the .gconf and .gconfd directories (suggested in a different thread on a similar issue), but that didn't change anything. How do I bring back the default gnome 3 bar at the top?
I rebuilt my user account from scratch (that was the fastest approach for me). Nevertheless, gnome-tweak-tool does crash (for example, each time I turn on "File Manager"). This is clearly a bug. I'm using nvidia GTX 480; the problem might somehow be related to the card/driver. I definitely spoke too early I logged out of my account; logged back in, and the top bar is gone again and I'm left with having to deal with this again.
