Ubuntu :: No Sound In Skype Beta - Use Beta On Acer Aspire One With 10.10
Nov 27, 2010I am trying to use Skype beta on my acer aspire one with ubuntu 10.10. The video runs brilliantly and i can also here my wife from the other end but she cannot hear me. Apparently something is fishy with my mic input. I tried alsamixer and everything is in unmute. My alsa version is 1.0.23. The only think she hears is a loud hissing noise which is normally my bat voice but she doesnt need to know that. I can record my voice in the sound recorder but nothing comes out in Skype!

Feb 17, 2010My firefox (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.6) Gecko/20091216 Fedora/3.5.6-1.fc11 Firefox/3.5.6) on Gnome 2.26.3 will randomly crash, without any errors. /var/log/messages & /var/log/Xorg.0.log doesn't show anything that caused any errors. And it doesn't matter on which website(s) I'm busy with, it will just crash.
My PC has:
Intel Pentium(R) Dual-Core E5200 CPU
4GB DDRII Corsair RAM
3x 160GB SATAII HDD
Asus Nvidia 8800GT graphics card.
I have updated to the latest nVidia drivers

This is on Fedora Core 12 x86 I have disabled the only 3 Firefox plug-ins that I installed yesterday, but this problem has been looming for a long time. Something interesting that I picked up is that Thunderbird will close randomly (very seldom though) as well, so I don't know if it's Firefox specific though.
I have picked up that it happens more often when my PC's memory usage is above 2GB RAM, and memtest86+ didn't indicate any memory problems. If I have less tabs open, it happens less often, but the more tabs I have open, the more often it happens. At the same time, on the same PC, when I'm in Windows XP SP3 (dual boot), I can have many more tabs open as well as Thunderbird, Quickbooks, Photoshop CS3 and some other applications, and it doesn't cash.

I've just followed the instructions at SDB:Skype - openSUSE again, as before. The install didn't start automatically when the download finished so I used package installer. Skype appears to start normally, before promptly closing itself after about 3-5 seconds. When running it from terminal, I get the message:

Everything is working fine however I have just installed the Skype beta deb package for Ubuntu 8.10+ 64b and it won't let me sign on. The installation as far as I know went fine however when I go to enter my UN and PW the "Sign In" button will not light up.

At the moment my webcams resolution appears to be half the size of what it should be which is creating a double vision/image of me and I can only see about half of my head vertically. My resolution should be 640X480, but it clearly is not. It looks way smaller like 320X240.

Apr 25, 2011I was going to install the Beta for Ubuntu 11.04 using the command update-manager -d. Everything went fine accept the fact that I had maybe two other programs running the same time as the update wich made my computer performance get really high wich ended in overheating and that my computer (using a laptop, of course) shut off. When I started my laptop again it will not go any further than the Ubuntu start screen saying something like "The device / cannot be found or is not ready yet". Can I all my files although I haven't done any backup?

Nov 29, 2010I seem to be having a problem on the new Kernel (2.6.35-23) with the system randomly freezing.
I have installed a number of things in recent days leading up to this problem, but when i boot with the old kernel i don't seem to have any issues. From this i am guessing its the new kernel.
The freezing seems (although i am not sure) to be worse when Rhythmbox is running. When it happens everything freezes, the playing song skips, replaying the same one second of music over and over. All the hotkeys stop and the mouse cursor stops responding.
I have seen people talking about system logs to look at system crashes but i don't know how to show those. I also doubt my ability to interpret them.

Oct 1, 2010Here's a weird one and hoping there will be a fix. It took an age to get Skype working with Pulseaudio and a USB headset but I got there. Still can't get it to ring through the speakers but use the headset for a call, which you can with ALSA, but there you go. I sometimes wonder if Pulse as default was a step forward or back. Anyway, current prob. All working fine for about four months. The machine is regularly unplugged and moved no drama.I take it out one day, come home, plug in, make a test call, get no error messages about playback or input device, I can hear the test call fine, but my recorded message playback is dead air. Nothing. Silence.
Hmm. I check absolutely everything obvious then open 'Pulseaudio Volume (recording)' find the mic is working fine (I could also hear it through the headset but this told me the audio path for the mic was through Pulseaudio for sure). So I make another test call with the volume window up and there is a level while I am recording my Skype test call message, but on playback there is again silence!I'm bamboozled for the moment. This seems to have happened at random. Used Sound Recorder to record with the mic and no problem. Working fine.Just Skype seems to be not hearing the mic at all, even though Sound Devices is set to Pulseaudio (you have no choice with Pulse).

Nov 5, 2015Aprox. 1 time per day / every two days hangs the x-server. It hangs a few secs then is being killed and restarted. A popup window in the task bar tells me the restart of the x-server. After that about 15 sec. I can continue to work but sometimes the gtk2 apps lose their integrity thus I have to restart by logging off and in again.

May 15, 2011I just recently upgraded to Natty and I'm having a fairly annoying issue with Gnome and Fluxbox. There will be random intervals where I'll hit the enter key and my desktop environment will just quit out without any warning. Now this is becoming a huge nuisance because I use time tracking software for work and I essentially lose time because once the environment crashes, the time is not saved.

May 9, 2011I'm running Xubuntu 11.04 with Skype 2.2 (although the problem presents in 2.1 as well). I've found that when I'm in a call with another person, and BOTH of us are using our webcams, Skype will randomly crash the entire system and force me to hardboot. I say randomly because A) it doesn't always happen, and B) it happens at random intervals. Sometimes as quickly as a few seconds, and sometimes several minutes. The crash appears differently each time. Sometimes the entire screen just freezes, sometimes it goes black with a white cursor, sometimes it goes to a CLI with what appears to be a kernel panic, and one time it even causes a CLI with what appeared to be flashing/scrolling text. I've check syslog and kern.log, as well as Xorg.0.log.

May 26, 2011Any time i try to open skype it closes out fully in 5 seconds (not even in the processes anymore). I don't know why or how OR how to make it stop being so mean to me! i'm running ubuntu 10.4 32bit . I tried to boot it in safe mode and umm.. it froze? or crashed? well it was on the black screen with the blinking dot for like 20 mins before i gave up on it (Hiting enter or esc or anything didn't work). There was a key symbol on my panel before skype acted up(It closed and disabled something.. i've never seen it before). Adobe also crashed, and linux did a small update (nothing with skype).

Feb 27, 2010i just found out (late i know) that the knew skype beta 2 now comes with the awesome screen-sharing feature that skype for mac and skype for win comes with..so i uninstalled the old skype and installed the new beta version with lightning quickness to try that out.. (and show off my compiz effects to all my friends lol!!)anyway, it seems to only work halfway for me. sharing the FULL screen will cause my skype app to crash and close instantly. but sharing a screen selection works just fine... even though i can't resize the screen selecting area.. but it's not that big a deal for me.

If I have 10.04 beta 1, could I just continue to update and not have to burn another disk to install? Or do I have to burn the beta 2 and reinstall if I want it?
Fedora :: Grsync/rsync Crash / Grsync Run For Some Time And Once It Nears Completion It Will Crash?
Jun 14, 2011I'm running Fedora 15 with current updates and kernel. I do not have anything special or non-standard about my configuration or setup. I use grsync to sync my home folder files to a remote rsync server on my network. I've checked my hard drives and my memory and everything else I can think. Here is the problem:
grsync will run for some time and once it nears completion it will crash. This, however, is no standard crash. It literally shuts my computer "OFF". I have shared the remote rsync folder through CIFS as well and I can copy those exact same files through nautilus with drag and drop without issue. I have had a few occasions where the rsync process will complete without issue, but this is a rare occasion. Since it powers my computer completely off I do not enjoy the luxury of having any log files or messages to attempt to diagnose from.

Dec 15, 2010I have downloaded & installed the skype beta release for linux (now ancient?) on my newly build fedora 14 (64) box.
Under fedora 12, I made this work after several hours of mucking around by installing old libraries for 32 bit code in /lib and /usr/lib - as I got an error, I found the library and put it in place. This was painful and the WRONG way to do things - I should have been using yum!
It remains a shame that the Skype release for Linux is so old, but that is life.
Can anyone list the libraries needed (prefer yum names if possible) to make this work?
I can do this again the hard way and list the results for others (should have saved for myself, but I never dreamed that a newer Skype release would take so long) , but I am sure many folks have this working already. I am surprised there is no "yum install skype---" command.

Jan 31, 2009Originally I had Ubuntu running on my machine. I installed windows beta 7 with a working dual boot. Get everything working in grub again. I decided to give Fedora a try and wiped my Ubuntu partition and installed Fedora. Everythings all good...except the reconfiguration of grub has left out my Windows 7 partition (nothing out of the norm) I tried manually adding windows 7 to /boot/grub/menu.lst but it's not working, when I try to boot into Windows 7 i get a little flashing "_" for a really long time and nothing happens.
