Fedora :: F15 Gnome Tweak Tool Causing System To Crash
Jun 23, 2011
I've just installed F15 over the weekend, and since then I've been having stability issues - primarily it seems to be related to gnome 3 (I've used fedora since its early days, and have never had such stability issues in the prior versions). Basically, when I use gnome-tweak-tool to make a modification, the system crashes; and I have to completely shut off the unit (unplug it) for it to even boot up properly. Today, I tried to change one of the options from its default, and now the very top (black bar) won't show.
I'm in the "File Manager" mode and can see the "Computer", "home" and "Trash" icons. I can move them about; and click on any of them to open. But once they're open nothing else works (clicking on any of the directories, etc, has no effect). I can ctl-alt-F2; but that's the extent. I deleted the .gconf and .gconfd directories (suggested in a different thread on a similar issue), but that didn't change anything. How do I bring back the default gnome 3 bar at the top?
I rebuilt my user account from scratch (that was the fastest approach for me). Nevertheless, gnome-tweak-tool does crash (for example, each time I turn on "File Manager"). This is clearly a bug. I'm using nvidia GTX 480; the problem might somehow be related to the card/driver. I definitely spoke too early I logged out of my account; logged back in, and the top bar is gone again and I'm left with having to deal with this again.
So this just started a few days ago... maybe 7 at the most.
I am working along, and screen goes black, or just freezes... the lights on my laptop start blinking and becomes everything becomes unresponsive.
I have noticed it is usually when I am Using Firefox and Flash content. I have also noticed it happens when using Deluge, but it usually takes 5 minutes to kick in.
I am using firefox at the moment, but I am sure if I load up a ..... video, it will lock up on me again.
Installed Jessie and added the Nvidia Proprietary drivers. All looks good.
When I open the Gnome Tweak Tool it appears to be working fine but won't change anything. If I click on a check box the check appears for a split second and then disappears. Tried re-starting a few times, same. Haven't found anything relevant on the net yet.
I have been running Gnome 3 for a few days now and really like it, but need to tweak it to my liking, basically to an overall darker theme. Something similar to this is what I am shooting for: I have figured out how to do the shell themes (top bar, dock, etc) but I am having problems with the window manager themes (window title bars, window backgrounds, etc). Using the Gnome-Tweak_Tool, I can apply the pre-installed ones, but I am at a loss as to how I add new ones. I have tried adding themes to ~/.themes, and /usr/share/gnome-shell/themes, but I am unable to get them to show up to be usable in the tweak tool. I am comfortable using the command line and/or editing configuration files if that is the only way.
Whenever I'm browsing the web on one of my natty machines, I'm subject to periodic reboots that leave nothing in the syslog. Here's the two constants I've discovered thus far.
It only happens when I'm using a browser (plugin?). It doesn't matter whether I'm in Chromium or Firefox. It doesn't matter whether I use Unity or Gnome 2. This happens every 2-3 days from what I can tell. This problem is not power related because I've tested it with and without an UPS present.
The computer does a full reboot without any shutdown procedure.
The configuration of this computer is as follows: Intel i3 2100 ECS H67 Dual Nic Haupaugge Dual ATSC Tuner MDADM RAID 10 8GB 1333MHz (MemTested)
The browser plugins are as follows: Flash 10.3r181 VLC Multimedia Plugin (compatible Totem 2.32.0) Windows Media Player Plug-in 10 (compatible; Totem) DivX Web Player version 1.4.0.233 QuickTime Plug-in 7.6.6
Today I updated using yum there was a update to something called control- center (2 updates for this) It said it was for changing fonts backgrounds, themes etc... is this just a update for systems settings or tweak tool or a new program? I know I cant change themes in System Settings so what is this...Anyone download this today? I cant find a new application.
After a recent update to Slack64 current, GL xscreensavers cause KDE to crash every single time they are run. The crash actually happens as the screensaver exits (ie it runs fine until a mouse or keyboard event, then crashes).
Here's the relevant Xorg output: Code: (EE) intel(0): [DRI2] DRI2SwapComplete: bad drawable
I'm only relatively new to ubuntu and am having a problem with firefox. There was an update waiting for me this morning to install some dummy package and since I've done that firefox falls down whenever I try to go to a page that requires flash. The screen turns grey and nothing happens.
With my limited knowledge (and inability to use any page that requires flash) I've tried to remove and re-install flash but nothing I do seems to work
I am currently running Fedora 14 on an x86_64 system that acts as a whole house server for named, dhcp, nfs, nis, htpp, samba, etcMy issue has existed for a few years and I am just now getting around to posting about it.I have a simple samba configuration for sharing files to a windows VM on another box. Here is the config:
[global] workgroup = NERD server string = Samba Server on NERD
I have upgraded my laptop to OpenSuse 11.2 few weeks ago. It was fine until last Tuesday, when a system crash occurred during a kernel security update. I think something went wrong with my network connection. I was working on my code and suddenly I lost my base tools such as /bin/ls and /bin/cd. So I tried to restart and got a kernel panic as my kernel was partially broken.
I tried rescue the system, however it did not work. After that I thought I could fix it by reinstalling the OS with minimal server configuration over my existing root partition. (Since I didnt have any other computer or live cd at that time and I was rushing for a demo, I could not reinstall the missing components one by one. And reinstalling the minimal server made sense then )Almost everything went fine ( i needed to do little things like creating gdm user). Now I can use my system and all my applications. But as expected, the pre installed packages in my system now cannot be seen by YaST Software Manager. Is there a way to repopulate the package list?
Another question is, I cannot restart the computer from a Gnome session. Whenever I restart or shutdown, i go back to the login screen, then I press Ctrl+Alt+F1 which starts the restart progress. How can I fix this?
Sorry if this is in the wrong group but its a bit of an odd one but I think comes under Server Support.. I've set up both x11vnc and freenx in an attempt to eliminate either as a cause for this issue. The problem is that when I log in with either, I can get into the desktop and run things from the menus but when I make the System menu active - the session hangs and you have to killall for the freenx or vnc processes.
I was wondering if anyone might be able to help me investigate this and hopefully fix it as I'm not sure where to look given that both types of remote connection seem to have the same issue.
I'm using centos 5, kernel 2.6.18-164.11.1.el5I have occasional server network problems (the NIC driver will basically crash/restart causing no connectivity for a period of time) due to the marvell sky2 NIC driver being a problem, as discussed here: This essentially means the server is unreliable when under any kind of reasonable load, to put it mildly.Worse still, the driver problem has not been resolved in 2.6.18.x - but it seems to have been resolved in the latest Linux kernels.I really don't want to compile the kernel from source, etc, but it looks like I may have no choice. Is there a repo which has a pre-compiled 2.6.20+ or 2.6.30+ kernel which I can use,
I have installed fedora13 OS on it recently, earlier it has both windows and linux but now only fedora13. My laptop's harddisk has probably some bad sectors and a software package "Automatic Bug Reporting Tool" has reported kernel crash,gnome-panel crash. I reported them upto some extent but in totality all I can't report. How to deal with it, why is it happening, and will it be harmful for any part like CPU,RAM,HardDisk of my laptop?
I'm getting ready to install Fedora 12 and I've been messing around with the live cd. I have a HP F4280 all in one printer. I currently am running Fedora 10 and it works fine. I remember I had to yum install the newest version of hplip and after that run the hpsetup command. My question is do I need to run the hpsetup command before using the gnome printer configuration tool or vice versa.
Also do I even need to run the gnome configuration tool at all?
I've just installed F14 64bit on my desktop and I tried to run Open Office Writer. As a result, GNOME crashed and the rendering of the desktop was messed up. I had to force a reboot, and now everytime I login the Open Office recover dialog causes a crash again. I suppose it has something to do with the opensource nvdia drivers and OO.o's toolkit but I can't look at it with the crash-on-login thingy there (I suppose I can install the closed source drivers from a tty now that I am thinking it again....)

Uh... actually I can't install the closed source drivers. Yum finds no mirrors for rpmfusion >( ...or the Fedora repos :
F13 just installed for me on a server back in the states for me. I VNC into it to setup my personal website. The GNOME menu listings do not have the tool I am familiar with that tells me which process are running, allows me to stop and start them, and to install them I believe if they are on the machine. I can see that MYSQL are on the machine with the Add/Remove tool. I also see myphpAdmin. I need to get both of these up and running. I should be able to do this with out going back to 1980's terminal commands right?
i was about to install fedora i had checked first and then when i reenter the disk to install it on hdd it shows me gnome bug error and some kind of crash but the desktop was ready with 2 bug it says gnome crash and other i didnt remember ..so what you say , should i install using that cd or i have to recreate a cd with fedora 14.i m using win7 already i wanna dualboot
If I try to use any other package or software management tool this is what it tells me, basically I think that ubuntu tweek has taken over and will not allow anything to update the system any more pls help?
Check if you are currently running another software management tool, e.g. Synaptic or aptitude. Only one tool is allowed to make changes at a time.
I just did the pacman -Syu command today since i have had limited access to internet i could use with arch lately, (been tethering via droid which is only compatible in ubuntu) The command line works fine, i even reinstalled X to see if that was the problem, whenever i do startx it loads up for a second but before my xfce screen even pops up the screen blinks and blackens.
I've tried to use the GUI tool for update system in Fedora 10. It listed all of the available updates successfully, but it have not any response when i click the 'Update System' button~
I was browsing the internet, and while i was loading website, my system hangs. I then goto messages in /var/logs, i get the following messages. What does it mean? This hang occurs once in a while,Also is there a function that could break this hangs by cancel the process (firefox) like Windows "Ctrl-Alt-Del"?
Code: Nov 1 19:20:29 hp-notebook-linux NetworkManager[1357]: <info> Activation (wlan0) Stage 5 of 5 (IP Configure Commit) complete.
I am running a HP dc5750 dual core computer with a 512MB Nvidia 7200/7300 graphics card my operating system is Ubuntu 10.10. Both my processors are operating at 98-104% cpu usage, it appears that gnome-appearance-properties is the culprit and the only way to return to normal is to end these processes. I have been setting up the desktop cube to my liking and the processor appears to rise up to 100% again. Would getting a 1GB graphics card correct this or is this a bug in maverick meerkat. Any advice would be appreciated. Please keep it simply as I am a Newbie to Linux and find things over-whelming at times. Also would running at 100% on both processors at indefinite periods of time harm my computer.
my laptop goes on unexpected crash several times without any warning.suppose i am writing something on gedit or browsing my system crashusic stops playing nothing happens.everything comes to at hang.i am running fedora13_64bit version on vaio vpccw16fg laptop, nvidia geforce 230m graphics card. i havent installed my nvidia graphics card yet, may be the graphics card driver that comes within the live cd is responsible for this.but still i want to confirm from u people about this problem.stalled the new kernel2.6.33.6-147.fc13(x86-64) and u know what this kernel doesnt even show me the login page. it hangs after completing the boot
