Server :: How To Start Sequence Of Applications At Specified Time Intervals In Debian

Nov 18, 2010

I am currently running debian lenny on an old mini ITX box (1GHZ 1GB ram OS on a 16GB CF card, 4 X 1TB sata drives) as a file server on my home network. I have modified /etc/inittab to auto log in a standard user, start X and start fluxbox. I would like the system to then start a couple of VM's using virtual Box but as this is not a high spec box I would like to start these automatically at 5 min intervals and about 5 min after the auto log in.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can achieve this or alternativley monitor the processor load and start each VM in sequence as the porcessor load drops below 20%.

Ubuntu :: Mouse Cursor Becoming Unresponsive At Random Intervals

Jun 21, 2010

Once every, say, 12 hours of use, I find that the mouse cursor spontaneously becomes unresponsive. The rest of the system is fine, and it responds to the keyboard, but the mouse does nothing. I'm pretty sure this isn't a problem with the mouse itself, because when it happens I've tried unplugging the mouse and plugging in a different one, and the problem persists. The problem doesn't seem to be correlated with any particular program or type of activity. I realize that this probably isn't much to go on. The next time it happens, is there at least anything I can do by way of diagnosis?

Ubuntu :: Gnome And Fluxbox Both Crash At Random Intervals?

May 15, 2011

I just recently upgraded to Natty and I'm having a fairly annoying issue with Gnome and Fluxbox. There will be random intervals where I'll hit the enter key and my desktop environment will just quit out without any warning. Now this is becoming a huge nuisance because I use time tracking software for work and I essentially lose time because once the environment crashes, the time is not saved.

Ubuntu Servers :: Kernel Errors - Syslog Output At Random Intervals

Jan 28, 2011

I am running a headless Ubuntu 10.04 server with the 2.6.32-28-generic kernel. For what I can figure out no single direct cause I get a high load average and the following syslog output at random intervals. Generally the load average will drop back down to normal however the kernel errors will still continue What little I have been able to find has pointed to memory issues. I am not totaly convinced this is the cause as the server will be showing >50% free when the errors are happening.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Screen Goes Black At Random Intervals?

Nov 24, 2010

opensuse v11.3
linux 2.6.34.7-0.5-desktop x86_64
ati radeon hd3200 (builtin to mb)
fglrx driver - distribution-specific build

At random intervals the video output is turned off for 2 - 3 seconds giving a black screen. (I suspect the 2 - 3 second blank time is how long it takes the monitor to recover after a loss of input signal.) The interval between events can vary from 1 minute to an hour to more than a week, and recently more than a month. Sometimes I get several per hour; other times not for two weeks. Hmm, there was a kernel update in the last week or so.At one time the cause was pointed at a USB driver problem since a number of USB log entries occurred at the same time as the screen blanking. That is not the case here;here is nothing in </var/log/messages> (or the dmesg output) that is anywhere near when a screen event happens.

Networking :: IP Addresses Roaming - Change On Regular Intervals

Dec 27, 2010

I'm doing some research into ip roaming and haven't come across a whole lot. My definition of IP roaming is the client / server changing of IP addresses on a regular basis using a pre-set number of IP addresses that both client and server have knowledge of. Specifically I'm interested in if anyone knows of any Linux applications that allow for IP address changing on regular intervals.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: WiFi Connection Dropping At Irregular Intervals

Jan 5, 2010

In summary, I am using openSUSE 11.2 x64 on an Acer laptop with a wireless AR928X card. I can connect to my WEP-secured network when I boot up. After some time (it might be minutes, it might be hours), I am prompted for my WEP password again. This never works, despite being the one which gets me on-line at start-up!. The only solution is a reboot. The problem is intermittent and doesn't seem to depend on my on-line activity. I have tried the following with the same result:
KNetworkManager
Traditional using IFUP
Enabling / disabling IPv6 support

I tried installing the compat-wireless package through YaST and then managed to get no internet connection at all. Went back to KNetworkManager and things "worked" again until I was prompted for the WEP code. I have openSUSE 11.2 x64 working on my office laptop without problem and can connect to my home network without any problem. My issues are with my personal laptop. I have reached the stage of booting into Windows 7 as my default option so that I can access the internet reliably. What I can do to diagnose and repair the problem - could it be that the card is going into powersave mode? If so, how do I stop that happening? I'd prefer to be on openSUSE but need to be able to rely on the internet.

Ubuntu :: After Log In Takes Long Time To Show Desktop, Monitor Events At Log In Time?

May 24, 2011

It takes me a while to log in the splash screen just sits there for ages before i get to the desktop. Never used to be this slow and I'm not sure why. Firstly, I'm running Ubuntu 11.04, standard DE. I do have conky starting up in a script but it has the & at the end of the line so I didn't think this would cause it (or is there some special case for log in time on how & is treated?). However as a test I will comment out the line in the script and see if it is the cause.

However just for general knowledge and in case that isn't the problem, how does one go seeing what is happening during the time from when one log's in and the desktop is displayed? Is there some kind of log that shows the date/time that can be enabled or is there a debug mode that can be enabled somehow via special keys or maybe from grub?

But the last about 6 weeks the system time only in Ubuntu is going slow. About -8 per 24 hours! I can only guess because I have more things running in my Windows 7 and Ubuntu.

I can set it right by coping the hareware time to system time with this command:

Code:

I want to run a crontab to have that command run every minute. But it don't seem to run.

Ubuntu :: Screen / Everything Freezes From Time To Time For No Reason In Natty?

May 4, 2011

Ever since I installed Ubuntu Natty, from time to time, for no particular reason, the entire computer screen freezes, and I am forced to hold the power button on my laptop to restart things with a hard reset. I cannot explain why it happens.

Such an issue never occurred in any of the past installations and versions of Ubuntu. This is a fresh installation of Natty by the way.

Also, I can currently be running a lot or nothing and it does this. Thus, it does not matter what I am actually doing (ie, what programs I might be running).

It has occurred about 10 times since I freshly installed Natty 6 days ago.

Fedora :: Network Time Protocol Part Of Date / Time Settings

Oct 3, 2009

I've got fedora 11 set up to use network time protocol to sync my laptop's date & time when I'm on-line. The question is simple really, I've added a local universality's time server (what is public) and it's live. but it's added to the end of the default time servers what come with fedora. How do I get fedora to just use the local time server, is it a case of removing the default time servers for fedora, but there is a box what says advanced options which are. sync system clock before starting service ???? & use Local time source (( is that the same as the local ntp server that I've got set up ))Hope some body can help me with the network time protocol part of Date/Time settings.
