Ubuntu Servers :: Kernel Errors - Syslog Output At Random Intervals
Jan 28, 2011
I am running a headless Ubuntu 10.04 server with the 2.6.32-28-generic kernel. For what I can figure out no single direct cause I get a high load average and the following syslog output at random intervals. Generally the load average will drop back down to normal however the kernel errors will still continue What little I have been able to find has pointed to memory issues. I am not totaly convinced this is the cause as the server will be showing >50% free when the errors are happening.

Once every, say, 12 hours of use, I find that the mouse cursor spontaneously becomes unresponsive. The rest of the system is fine, and it responds to the keyboard, but the mouse does nothing. I'm pretty sure this isn't a problem with the mouse itself, because when it happens I've tried unplugging the mouse and plugging in a different one, and the problem persists. The problem doesn't seem to be correlated with any particular program or type of activity. I realize that this probably isn't much to go on. The next time it happens, is there at least anything I can do by way of diagnosis?

I just recently upgraded to Natty and I'm having a fairly annoying issue with Gnome and Fluxbox. There will be random intervals where I'll hit the enter key and my desktop environment will just quit out without any warning. Now this is becoming a huge nuisance because I use time tracking software for work and I essentially lose time because once the environment crashes, the time is not saved.

Banshee is, at seemingly random intervals, emptying any playlist I have imported (as .pls generated by Rhythmbox). The playlists I build in Banshee directly are not suffering this emptying problem. (There is one imported playlist, of some 30+, which has not yet emptied but I see nothing special about it.)

I've been running Debian 8 jessie at the screen's native resolution (1280x800) via the following hack: [URL]
What's bugging me is that at random intervals, my screen shuts off while the laptop is still running, forcing me to hard reset.

opensuse v11.3
linux 2.6.34.7-0.5-desktop x86_64
ati radeon hd3200 (builtin to mb)
fglrx driver - distribution-specific build
At random intervals the video output is turned off for 2 - 3 seconds giving a black screen. (I suspect the 2 - 3 second blank time is how long it takes the monitor to recover after a loss of input signal.) The interval between events can vary from 1 minute to an hour to more than a week, and recently more than a month. Sometimes I get several per hour; other times not for two weeks. Hmm, there was a kernel update in the last week or so.At one time the cause was pointed at a USB driver problem since a number of USB log entries occurred at the same time as the screen blanking. That is not the case here;here is nothing in </var/log/messages> (or the dmesg output) that is anywhere near when a screen event happens.

Recently I had to login to OS 11.3 via tty, but was unable to. Tty screen was flooded with syslog output. Instead of outputting info only on tty10 it was throwing it on every tty (1-6), I switched to.
How to fix this behaviour and restrict syslog output only to tty10?

1) is it possible to have dmesg output (syslog) with timestamps for each occurrence of the boot log?
2) where to find documentation/advice about which kernel functions yield each occurrence?

Because I have Windows and two different Linux distributions installed, I have two GRUBs on my system. The first one that starts when I boot the computer is Linux Mint's GRUB. It can run Mint, Windows, or Kubuntu's GRUB, which in turn can run Kubuntu. Right now I mostly use Kubuntu, but I haven't changed the setup of the GRUBs because it worked. Until yesterday, when Mint's GRUB worked well, but Kubuntu's GRUB gave me an error while trying to run Kubuntu. I restarted the computer a few times, and it happened every time. Sometimes the errors I got were 16 and sometimes 18. Occasionally, even the first GRUB had errors.
I thought that maybe something's wrong with my hard disk, so I booted from a Kubuntu Live CD and did a fsck, which showed no errors at all (except that it's rather suspicious, because it checked the partition instantly, is it supposed to work like that?). Then, I reinstalled Kubuntu's GRUB and rebooted the computer. This time, everything went well! I even rebooted it later once, and didn't get any errors.
Today, I got up and wanted to use the computer, and it gave me the same errors again. :O I rebooted a few times, and it was just like before. Then, I booted from the Live CD, there I didn't start the system, but I picked "boot from hard drive" and it miraculously worked. This is weird. What could possibly cause these errors? I haven't even installed or updated anything recently.

I am new to CENTOS (5.2) and more importantly new to linux. Any time I try to gcc compile something, it always throws random errors. I yum installed development-tools which is what I have seen other threads suggest but that did not solve the issue. I still get the same errors. I cannot find a common error among the many things I have attempted to compile.
Here is my most recent file for an example made when trying to compile up-imapproxy :

What i'm trying to accomplish seems rather silly but is needed for my little project here.
I'm using OpenSuSE 11.2 as a media center PC and need it to login automatically(console not X). That one i accomplished without problems.
However, after login i can see all the info about the services that were started and that needs to "go away".
One could do a "clear" in the .bash_rc and or .bash_profile but it will still show the login prompt which i don't want to see either (i don't even want to see the blinking cursor as well).
Question: How do i accomplish that so that the login console shows only the "splash screen" without any output of the kernel,rc.status nor the "issue-file"... just a plain blank screen ?

On this Ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS server, I want to log the messages from a Linksys router. So I made this change to "/etc/init.d/sysklogd" SYSLOGD="-r" Then in "/etc/syslog.conf" I added the following to the top of the file: Code: if $fromhost isequal 'Linksys' then /var/log/Linksys.log & ~
Then I rebooted the server. But there is no "/var/log/Linksys.log" file.

I wish it was under better circumstances...very morning at 6:25am syslog-ng stops logging, right after it attempts to log rotate. its odd... the daemon doesnt die... it gets a new PID, but doesnt write the output to /var/log/syslog.Yet if I manually restart or reload syslog-ng it works great... its just like it doesnt like the logrotate...I have googled around and tried a few things...first I changed the postrotate in the logrotate.d/syslog-ng
--------/etc/logrotate.d/syslog-ng---------

I'm running a syslog server on ubuntu 7.04. Can I somehow have it email me if it finds a certain thing in the log? For example. I'm running a PRI and when the PRI goes down, it logs a "DEACTIVED" in the log. I would like an email telling me this so I know to get on it and fix it.

I recently upgraded a Ubuntu server from version 8.04 to 10.04 and after a reboot the webmin and syslog-ng server do not start at boot anymore. I can start them manually by doing /etc/init.d/webmin start and /etc/init.d/syslong-ng start and everything works fine until I root again. Granted this machine is rarely rebooted but when it is, I don't want to have to remember to start these services. I have tried a full removal of syslog-ng and reinstall but to no avail. The entries are in the rc directories like they should and the links are valid.

I guess with major changes to syslog-ng, php-syslog going to licensing cost, and major overhaul to the syslog plugin with cacti - alot of documention was either disjointed, outdated or I just couldn't find it.this was performed on an 11.04 Ubuntu Server tall. I already had Cacti up and running and just needed to make it also a syslog collector. This guide assumes you already have mysql running, and cacti is already in place. If something looks wrong - please correct me. I am doing this from memory - trying to remember what all I had to do, and not a super admin.Required ubuntu install packages:libdbd-mysql syslog-ngcacti install packages:[URL]
Stop syslog-ng if you want. Changes should not take effect until you restart it.Should save the default syslog-ng configuration if you want to be safe. Below is the absolute minimum you need to get this working.Configuration on ubuntu is location in /etc/syslog/syslog-ng.conf Also make sure you fill in the proper username and password for mysql.
Code:
@version: 3.1
#Bare minimum syslog-ng configuration

I'm on an Acer Aspire 7535 Laptop running a dual boot with 10.10 and Windows 7. Although a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.10 doesn't seem to give me any problems, after a few updates, my laptop would lock up and give a black screen while using 10.10. The kernel panic seems to happen randomly, either taking minutes or hours to happen, whether I am doing anything or idling.
