Ubuntu :: 10.04 New Install Gnome Crash On Start - Cannot Switch Between Ttys

Jun 6, 2010

Fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04, Gnome session fails to start. Gnome-failsafe and XFCE work great. xsession-errors: [URL].... i also cannot switch between ttys, if i do video becomes blured to the point of unreadable. I think this is an issue with X. I have tried the generic kernel (non-pae) with noapic and apci=off with no results.

[Arch Linux] This has been mildly annoying ever since I installed Arch. From X, I can switch to any of my ttys, using Ctrl+Alt+FN. But when I'm in a console, that key combination does nothing, and I have to restart X11 to get back.

After a crash I cannot log in to the GNOME environment anymore, after entering the password the login animation is being displayed for a while and then screen returns to gdm. GNOME failsafe works fine. I don't know what information may be useful to debug this problem. ~/.xsession-errors contains

Code:

Setting IM through im-switch for locale=en_US.
Start IM through /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/all_ALL linked to /etc/X11/xinit

Ubuntu :: Gnome And Fluxbox Both Crash At Random Intervals?

May 15, 2011

I just recently upgraded to Natty and I'm having a fairly annoying issue with Gnome and Fluxbox. There will be random intervals where I'll hit the enter key and my desktop environment will just quit out without any warning. Now this is becoming a huge nuisance because I use time tracking software for work and I essentially lose time because once the environment crashes, the time is not saved.

Ubuntu :: TTYs Won't Work

Mar 9, 2010

I have searched the web, tried getting support on IRC, and even tried some drastic measures that I came up with on-the-fly, but could not get satisfactory results. After installing the 2.6.31-20 kernel, I have noticed, that virtual terminals ( or whatever should I call those. The ones that are accessed by ctrl+alt+[function_key]) stopped loading. When I open any of them I only see a cursor and nothing else. I can take almost no actions: the only two things that actually work are changing between terminals and ctrl+alt+delete.

Eventually, I gave figured out, that this happens because getty is not launched automatically. After running appropriate command, each terminal can be recreated for the current session. Tried fixing this by creating a script that would run that command on each startup, but could not actually make the script to be executed (I tried making rc to run it, as I need these terminals to be present when GUI is not yet activated).Right now, I see two possible solutions: either make them autoload like they are supposed to, or work out a way for that script to be ran on startup. So, any ideas?Ah, yes. Also, the GDM now loads on tty2. Will it give me problems if it continues like that?

Fedora :: [F14] GNOME Crash On Login?

Dec 4, 2010

I've just installed F14 64bit on my desktop and I tried to run Open Office Writer. As a result, GNOME crashed and the rendering of the desktop was messed up. I had to force a reboot, and now everytime I login the Open Office recover dialog causes a crash again. I suppose it has something to do with the opensource nvdia drivers and OO.o's toolkit but I can't look at it with the crash-on-login thingy there (I suppose I can install the closed source drivers from a tty now that I am thinking it again....)

---------- Post added at 07:27 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:24 PM ----------

Uh... actually I can't install the closed source drivers. Yum finds no mirrors for rpmfusion >(

Ubuntu :: Proxy Switch In Natty / 11.04 Gnome Classic?

Jul 7, 2011

Ever since I upgraded to Natty / 11.04, the quality of my desktop experience has dropped sharply.

One thing that effect me greatly is that I can no longer conveniently switch my network proxy on or off system-wide with single click.

Back in Maverick / 10.10, I could launch gnome-network-properties and switch it back and forth depends rather I am at work or at home.

I have found a similar application, "gnome-control-center network," on the surface of it, it seems to replace "gnome-network-properties" in Maverick. Except that this application doesn't seems do ANYTHING.

As result, I am having the hardest time switching my proxy settings, as I have to do so per application basis (gpodder, pidgin, aptitude, thunderbird / firefox, etc).

ps. I am using Gnome "classic" but Gnome 3 suffers the same issue
