I love Gnome Do, particularly it's "docky" interface. However, after installing Ubuntu 10.10 I realized that the "Docky" theme was not available anymore. I cecked the Gnome Do website but it seems that docky is still supported. Am I missing something? PS: I don't want to install Docky. The dock is OK, but I like the Gnome Do commands to be integrated with it.
View 9 RepliesI tried out the 10.04 beta in VirtualBox, and the tab for Interface in Appearance Settings was gone. This tab allowed you to edit the appearance of Toolbars in Ubuntu. You could edit whether Icons showed up in the toolbar buttons and whether Text shows up beside it. This is kind of a minor annoyance for me; is there any way to edit this option outside of the appearance settings? I'm sure there is (like editing some config file or GConf), but I'm not sure where.

One combo I enjoy playing with is the Minimal CD with Openbox or some other small footprint window manager.I'd like to try Docky, but the need for compositing is a problem for me. I don't want to install Gnome, KDE, or XFCE, because I don't want all the stuff that comes with them.Can you tell me the packages I need to install to get Docky working? Are Compiz and Docky enough?Will Compiz serve as a standalone window manager and automatically start at logon?

The fun part of this all is that once you know how to work in Bash. Linux isn't all so frightening and confusing anymore ! So I've decided to finally take the shot on switching from Windows to Ubuntu Desktop and I must say I'm quite amazed with the customization you can do in Ubuntu.I just installed Docky and I installed Gnome Do. Now it has come to my attention that Gnome Do can integrate with Docky however I do have a small question concerning the customization of the Dock bar. In Gnome Do I would really like to have the panel look from Docky and I was wondering if this is possible. To me it seems that it's only possible to use the 3D look which looks a lot like Mac OSx. I'm aiming for a bit of a Windows 7 interface however.

Would it be possible to replace all the gnome panels with docky? i need to be able to access my applications,places,system in the top panel and my wifi manager but other than that docky does everything else, is there a way to get the above mentioned in docky?
I'm currently on Ubuntu 10.04, and I just have one small issue that is bugging me. Every time I open up zsnes just to play some games, a blank icon appears for the application in the dock. I was just wondering if there is anyway for docky to use the zsnes icon instead of the blank one.On a side note I'm just curious to know how to fix blurry icons that appear on docky as well. I.E. Ubuntu Software Manager.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've noticed that my upper gnome panel and Docky will disappear randomly. I've deleted the lower panel. The last time the panel and Docky did this, I was using Rhythmbox and Google Chrome. Tooltips will still show on Docky and the panel, and I can still select things; however, the buttons are invisible. Is there a way to prevent this from happening?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI had experienced a annoying feature relative to both the Gnome Weather-applet (the one linked to the clock) and the weather-desklet from Docky : With the same laptop (working under Lucid Lynx), they work perfectly fine when I am using them from work but never stop to update (in the case of the Docky desklet) or didn't show up (for the gnome weather-applet) when I am using them from home. In both case, I am using a WiFi connection and no proxy.
Has everyone else experimented such a problem ? If so, which parameters should I adjust to solve this trouble? PS : Wherever the place I am, I can access with a web-browser to the websites providing the weather forecast (iGoogle, weather.com and weather.underground).

I'm loving FC14, but I just find out that Wireshark is not working, as it was on FC13.Here is what's happening..... When running the application I get prompt for authentication, that was fine under FC13. I used to type my super user password, andthat was it. On FC14 I get nothing.Now when I skip the authentication the Wireshark Gui comes up, but it has no interfaces showing on my list.What I have!:

downloaded the latest firefox and put it in /opt, it runs ok but the interface is missing icons, like the back and forward buttons, refresh, the x on the tabs, the + for a new tab, and others. iceweasel is fine. anyone seen this or know where or how to fix it?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just setup a SuSE 11.3/64 server and I am trying to setup pptpd for a vpn. I noticed thatg the ppp0 (or any pppx) interface is non-exoisting and I think that that is the problem why my gre packages are not being sent by pptpd (as I have checked all other options). I have tcp port 1723, and protocol port 47 (gre) open on the firewall (SuSEfirewall2). I have traced the responses using tcpdump and only when the server sends gre to the remote client, the client never receives it (the 1723 connection is established). I checked the old server (SuSE 10.2) that worked the vpn fine, and the only thing missing on 11.3 is ppp0. All other hardware (routers, etc.) are the same. I suspect that pptpd tries to use ppp0 and the interface is non-existing. I can remotely ssh to the server, dns works, samba works, everything else works. Is it something I am missing? How do I create if ppp0 and link it to eth3, the internet gateway?
As always, a windoze tech crashed the old server and I had to setup the new one in a hurry, just before going on vacation, and people want this done by yesterday? They paid $$$$ to the windoze tech (who said Linux is obsolete) even after he almost brought the company down!
I'm having trouble getting my Ubuntu 10.04 machine (Sony Vaio VGN-SR490) to connect to the Internet by way of an Ethernet cable connected directly to my router.
I'm able to connect to the Internet using this same cable using a Windows machine, so there's something wrong with the way Linux is configured.
How do I got about figuring out what the problem is and solving it?

It looks like the network adapters list is empty. I will now install both Windows XP and Ubuntu Linux dual-boot. I'm still not able to access the internet, even through Windows. I'm wonder if this could be a hardware problem with the computer or a problem with the router itself. Other computers can connect to this same router, and work fine. (That's how I'm posting this after all!)
Yesterday I installed debian squeeze and inside appearance preferences there are: theme, background and fonts tabs but the interface tab is missing. What do I need to install in order to have this missing tab?

When I check in qdbusviewer, there is indeed no shutdown method in the org.freedesktop.PowerManagement interface. This does not seem normal, although I have the same problem on 2 suse 11.3 boxes.Through this post, I started fiddling with policykit settings, but it doesn't change anything.Does anyone know a solution to this problem? Do you have these canShutdown/shutdown methods?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have recently upgraded to 11.04 and am running the Classic interface as I don't like Unity.However, I have noticed so far two areas where this Classic version has gone backwards from the default Gnome in 10.10 and earlier.I can't rearrange window buttons on the Window list, nor can I drag-and-drop say FLAC files onto the button for "Movie Player" any more -they end up pinned on the panel!How can I get back the ability to drag window buttons around and and turn off the annoying pinning feature and get drag-and-drop back?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 10.10 to try out right? Well, I tried to expand the height of the bottom task bar to 35, and when I did, it had an graphical issue happen. Its almost as though the image isnt large enough so it starting repeating it to fill in the height. I think I can do screenshots so I can show below. Is there anyway to fix that?
The other question I have is, why is GNOME and KDE both using such larger buttons and drawing then Windows or even MacOS? Can they be made smaller? I can include screenshots for those if I need to.
My Lenovo laptop has an Intel Pro 4965 Wifi adapter,here is the "lspci" detection:

View 6 Replies View RelatedSince I switched to lucid (clean install), the interface has become very slow, unresponsive. I had no such problem in karmic. Switching from one window to another, displaying menus, browsing files, resizing windows etc... take ages to display.Now what is strange, is that this problem only affects native gnome applications.For instance Scribus or Blender run very smoothly, whereas Nautilus, Rhythmbox, Gimp or Inkscape, to name a few, suffer from those horrible lags.I'm pretty sure it's not a driver problem, I'm using the latest nvidia-current drivers, and I tried everything : disabling compiz, disabling metacity compositing, using nouveau, using latest kernels, using xorg server 1.8. No change.
So I know the problem only affects native gnome apps, but now how can I find which package causes this mess ?I just installed a few repos to have some recent graphic apps (gimp, inkscape, openshot, scribus... that's it), but I can't see in what way they could have messed with my system.
Since Unity and Gnome 3, the desktop interfaces are really changed. I really like the Gnome 2 (classic) interface. I can see every tray icon, every window that opened or minimized at panels, I have my menus, I don't need some mouse tricks to see something. Unity and Gnome 3 are fancy but I don't look for fancy.
Gnome 3 is the next generation. I don't like it. I don't like Unity either. And the problem is Gnome 2 will not be evolved much with its own standard interface because Gnome 3 is arrived. Gnome 2 is getting closer to its end of life. Bugs will not be handled with more attention, compatibilities will be less.So than, I don't like this situation of Gnome 2 either.
I know only Ubuntu that uses it. Are there others?

But I realized that the barebone gnome package that I installed doesn't include a terminal or a text editor so I can't install anything further or modify the rc.conf file to make it boot without gdm.
Is there a way for me to kill x from the Gnome interface?
When I try to install the wireshark-gnome interface I get a notice about needing two dependencies. One is portaudio and the other is the jack-audio-connection-kit. Seems like kind of odd dependencies for wireshark. Do wireshark really need them? VoIP related maybe?
View 6 Replies View RelatedJust setup 5.5 as Server-GUI installation last night. Ran latest updates today; it requested a restart; logged in to console; GUI desktop all looked normal at first, except that the panels on top and bottom are empty, except for the menu "Applications Places System" items (upper left) are there, but non-functional. The desktop icons for "Computer, Home, Trash" are functional. Update as I am writing this: The menu header items are now GONE as well, but icons still work (but don't help me).
Problem is, I don't have access to any apps that will allow me to reboot the machine with access to "Shutdown/Restart". If I hit the reset button, will it be OK? Or will it blow up like a Windows machine? Luckily I can reinstall if necessary, but the update thing might crash me again. All was fine before applying updates. Anybody having problems with the latest updates?
I have missed icons on gnome menu. I attach a screenshot.
