Ubuntu :: Theme Or Skin The Docky Dock From A Gnome-do Install?
Apr 13, 2010
Is it possible to theme or skin the Docky dock from a Gnome-do installl? I know you can theme/skin it if you install only Docky, but also if you have Docky as your Gnome-do theme?

I've notice that cairo dock has jitter when you move the mouse over the Dock. Indeed if you install Gnome Do (Docky) you notice that when you move the mouse over the bar the effect is very smooth. I don't understand why cairo dock is less smooth in movement but i finally found a solution:
1- Close cairo-dock bar;
2- Go to ~/.config/cairo-dock/current_theme/
3- Open the file cairo-dock.conf with gedit
4- Now press ctrl+f and insert in the search: refresh frequency
5- Now you have to modify the line:
#i-[5;60] Refresh frequency when mouving cursor into the dock : #{in Hz. This is to adjust regarding your CPU power.} refresh frequency=35 in thi s way: #i-[5;120] Refresh frequency when mouving cursor into the dock :
#{in Hz. This is to adjust regarding your CPU power.} refresh frequency=120
6- save the modification;
7- start cairo-dock;
This is an example of bad programmation, a lot of possibility to configure the dock but no one of this it's adequately cured.

I have got my Ubuntu desktop looking exactly how I want it apart from one little thing. I would like Docky to use a different icon theme then the one I am using for gnome. See these are the icons I want to use on Gnome/Nautilus: But these are the icons I want for Docky: So what I want to end up with is this: I have had a look in gconf-editor to see if there are any settings to do this but there doesn't seem to be any, I even tried adding a stringvalue with "icon_theme" and putting in the theme I wanted to use but that didn't work. Is there anyway I can manual edit a Docky config file to tell it what icon theme to use?

What theme is this, the window? Kind of resembles Mac. Does anybody recognize it? Also, what program is the one with the little green monster/devil head on the dock?

i've installed cairo-dock to have some eye candy on my openbox desktopso everything's been good, and installed lxappearance so i won't have gnome daemon running all the time, the thing is that when i use the nautilus launcher from cairo dock, the window keeps the default theme of nautilus which is... in lack of a better word "ugly" you know is all gray and looks like the one that came with win$h!.. 98, but actually lxappearance works 'cause i can see the theme i chose when i execute rhythmbox or other application.so my question would actually be.. why it looks crappy only when i launch it from cairo-dock? the launcher uses the command nautilus --no-desktop, so maybe i have to add something so it will apply the theme?? i don't know.

I like to try different combinations of *buntu in the several partitions on my first drive. One combo I enjoy playing with is the Minimal CD with Openbox or some other small footprint window manager.I'd like to try Docky, but the need for compositing is a problem for me. I don't want to install Gnome, KDE, or XFCE, because I don't want all the stuff that comes with them.Can you tell me the packages I need to install to get Docky working? Are Compiz and Docky enough?Will Compiz serve as a standalone window manager and automatically start at logon?

This year in college I've had the liberty to be learning about Linux. This was mostly in the shell so a lot of GUI applications we didn't use. The fun part of this all is that once you know how to work in Bash. Linux isn't all so frightening and confusing anymore ! So I've decided to finally take the shot on switching from Windows to Ubuntu Desktop and I must say I'm quite amazed with the customization you can do in Ubuntu.I just installed Docky and I installed Gnome Do. Now it has come to my attention that Gnome Do can integrate with Docky however I do have a small question concerning the customization of the Dock bar. In Gnome Do I would really like to have the panel look from Docky and I was wondering if this is possible. To me it seems that it's only possible to use the 3D look which looks a lot like Mac OSx. I'm aiming for a bit of a Windows 7 interface however.

Would it be possible to replace all the gnome panels with docky? i need to be able to access my applications,places,system in the top panel and my wifi manager but other than that docky does everything else, is there a way to get the above mentioned in docky?

I'm currently on Ubuntu 10.04, and I just have one small issue that is bugging me. Every time I open up zsnes just to play some games, a blank icon appears for the application in the dock. I was just wondering if there is anyway for docky to use the zsnes icon instead of the blank one.On a side note I'm just curious to know how to fix blurry icons that appear on docky as well. I.E. Ubuntu Software Manager.

Nice surprise to see Grub appearing with its winter skin today. So Grub can be configured for some events, like birthdate, Christmas, New Year,... ? I've checked in /boot/grub and saw nothing like a .xml file to edit (like one used for background on Gnome desktop).

I've noticed that my upper gnome panel and Docky will disappear randomly. I've deleted the lower panel. The last time the panel and Docky did this, I was using Rhythmbox and Google Chrome. Tooltips will still show on Docky and the panel, and I can still select things; however, the buttons are invisible. Is there a way to prevent this from happening?

I certainly do not want to install Elementary OS, and just want a similar interface. I already installed docky, but Unity gets in the way. Is there a way I can disable that? Also, can I hide the docky application icon on Docky? Or is there a better way to do this?

I had experienced a annoying feature relative to both the Gnome Weather-applet (the one linked to the clock) and the weather-desklet from Docky : With the same laptop (working under Lucid Lynx), they work perfectly fine when I am using them from work but never stop to update (in the case of the Docky desklet) or didn't show up (for the gnome weather-applet) when I am using them from home. In both case, I am using a WiFi connection and no proxy.
Has everyone else experimented such a problem ? If so, which parameters should I adjust to solve this trouble? PS : Wherever the place I am, I can access with a web-browser to the websites providing the weather forecast (iGoogle, weather.com and weather.underground).

I have avant-window-navigator in my startup appplications. This apparently causes gnome to use the Gnome icon theme on boot, instead of the Humanity theme I selected in Preferences->Appearance. I just have to go to Preferences-Appearance again to get the Humanity theme back to work (I don't even have to change any settings, just going there is enough.) When I remove awn from my startup applications, this problem doesn't occur.

I"m thinking of trying out Cairo Dock with Ubuntu for the next 2 weeks until Meerkat comes out, but if I prefer the gnome panel I'd like to bring that back. I can right click the lower task bar in Ubuntu and "remove this panel." if there is there any way I can bring it back? Also if anyone here uses Cairo Dock could you let me know your thoughts on it?

I installed a theme in emerald, and it didn't do anything, like, it had no effect on my windows or anything. So i did some searching and the only thing i could find was to run "emerald --replace" in the terminal, and it worked, but if I exit out of the terminal, it reverts back to the old theme.How do I keep emerald's theme, even after I exit the terminal?

Im running Linux Mint Debian Edition. I have also installed Cairo Dock.At first there was a black box for a background, but when I turned on the gnome composting, I got the transparent background that I wanted. I turned on the gnome composting by going to control center/desktop settings/Windows/Use Gnome Composting.It was fine for about a day.Then all of a sudden I am back to the black box. I checked the gnome composting check-box and it is still checked. I don't know what else to try.Perhaps I need to install my graphics driver for my graphics card and use Compiz. I would rather not bother jumping through those hoops if I can help it. Bottom Line -- Gnome Composting is Broken

I love Gnome Do, particularly it's "docky" interface. However, after installing Ubuntu 10.10 I realized that the "Docky" theme was not available anymore. I cecked the Gnome Do website but it seems that docky is still supported. Am I missing something? PS: I don't want to install Docky. The dock is OK, but I like the Gnome Do commands to be integrated with it.

moments after I log in to my Ubuntu 10.10 32-bit desktop my theme reverts to the "classic" Ubuntu theme and icons. I can open appearance and change it back, but I have to do this every time I log on. It also changes the theme, but whenever I right click my desktop or open Nautilis, it still looks like the "classic" theme.Is this an already existing problem? is there a fix?
