View 6 RepliesI am some LinuxUNIX history but still consider my self a newbie.I know Microsoft OS well and am more comfortable with that but willing to learn Linux as well.I have a CentOS 5.5 Server I am using to Host over 18 other sites with a PERL / Web based application. The application and hosting are still working but since the CentOS updates I ran this morning my Session (I think that is the correct word) will only load a black desktop with the top menu bar only having the terminal icon and the bottom having a desktop icon; whereas prior to this update the default CentOS blue backdrop with white flower pattern and Applications, Places, System with the terminal icon and other icons displayed and the clock was off to the right.I think this is the Gnome GUI?
Also On Friday 6-24-11 I added a device line to the /etc/fstab so that my CD/DVD device would load up at boat time. I would not think this to be causing the problem. Please advise me on how to get back my regular GUI interface for this Desktop.

View 1 Replies View RelatedSince Unity and Gnome 3, the desktop interfaces are really changed. I really like the Gnome 2 (classic) interface. I can see every tray icon, every window that opened or minimized at panels, I have my menus, I don't need some mouse tricks to see something. Unity and Gnome 3 are fancy but I don't look for fancy.
Gnome 3 is the next generation. I don't like it. I don't like Unity either. And the problem is Gnome 2 will not be evolved much with its own standard interface because Gnome 3 is arrived. Gnome 2 is getting closer to its end of life. Bugs will not be handled with more attention, compatibilities will be less.So than, I don't like this situation of Gnome 2 either.
I am new to Debian and have a new install. How does one change the desktop from gnome to kde? Also, I would like to change the screen resolution, but under preferences > screen resolution, the settngs are blank, ie, no resolutions to choose from. This Debian install is from the latest net install iso.

I just downloaded Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.04 and am running it from a usb flash drive on my Acer laptop.
At times I'd like to use the Gnome desktop. I know with the previous version there was a way to change to Gnome. Is there still a way to change to Gnome on the 10.04 version and if so how do I change to Gnome and back to Netbook Edition desktop?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have recently played around with Mac4lin a program to change the interface to one that resembles a Mac computer. I did not like the settings then decided to uninstall the program. It reverted to a really ugly looking gnome desktop rather than my previous settings. One thing that I don't like is that I have a foot icon on my gnome traditional menu button on the panel rather than the green ball type icon I used to have. I know it's not the end of the world that my icons do not look like it previously did, everything else is running smoothly, though I'm just more annoyed than anything else.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm doing some research into ip roaming and haven't come across a whole lot. My definition of IP roaming is the client / server changing of IP addresses on a regular basis using a pre-set number of IP addresses that both client and server have knowledge of. Specifically I'm interested in if anyone knows of any Linux applications that allow for IP address changing on regular intervals.

I have this problem that Xorg CPU usage spikes to between %20-%40, a little more than once every second - constantly. When this happens, everything on the system slows down, video, scrolling through pages, etc. plasma-desktop does the same, at the same time as Xorg, though uses less CPU. Switching off Desktop effects makes no difference. The spikes starts just after KDE is up and running after boot. I'm running 11.3, KDE 4.4.4 release 3, 64bit on a desktop and 32bit on a laptop, both have the same problem. I have searched the internet, but cannot find anything related to this, please help!
My 64bit desktop details is:

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have recently upgraded to 11.04 and am running the Classic interface as I don't like Unity. However, I have noticed so far two areas where this Classic version has gone backwards from the default Gnome in 10.10 and earlier.I can't rearrange window buttons on the Window list, nor can I drag-and-drop say FLAC files onto the button for "Movie Player" any more -they end up pinned on the panel! How can I get back the ability to drag window buttons around and and turn off the annoying pinning feature and get drag-and-drop back?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 10.10 to try out right? Well, I tried to expand the height of the bottom task bar to 35, and when I did, it had an graphical issue happen. Its almost as though the image isnt large enough so it starting repeating it to fill in the height. I think I can do screenshots so I can show below. Is there anyway to fix that?
The other question I have is, why is GNOME and KDE both using such larger buttons and drawing then Windows or even MacOS? Can they be made smaller? I can include screenshots for those if I need to.
I got into ubuntu-netbook-10.04.2 through the graphical interface ensures that xbmc as the first boot as described below. Autostart XBMC (optional)I did perform this step, since it makes your system only run XBMC. I wanted to be able to select the application By following these instructions, your system will boot directly into XBMC rather than your desktop from now on. It is advised that you delay this step until XBMC is setup as you'd like it.
1. From the desktop click System -> Administration -> Login Screen
2. From the "Security" tab choose "Enable Automatic Login" and select your username.
3. Click "OK" to exit.
4. Logout of your system.
5. From the Login screen choose "Select Session"
6. Choose "XBMC" and click "Change Session"

When i logged into a gnome desktop i got this message: "The GNOME session manager was unable to read file:'/home/(desktop name)/ICEauthority'. If this file exists it must be readable by you for GNOME to work properly. try logging in with failsafe session and removing the file." What commands do i use for that? or do i need to do something else?
View 2 Replies View RelatedSince I switched to lucid (clean install), the interface has become very slow, unresponsive. I had no such problem in karmic. Switching from one window to another, displaying menus, browsing files, resizing windows etc... take ages to display. Now what is strange, is that this problem only affects native gnome applications. For instance Scribus or Blender run very smoothly, whereas Nautilus, Rhythmbox, Gimp or Inkscape, to name a few, suffer from those horrible lags.I'm pretty sure it's not a driver problem, I'm using the latest nvidia-current drivers, and I tried everything : disabling compiz, disabling metacity compositing, using nouveau, using latest kernels, using xorg server 1.8. No change.
So I know the problem only affects native gnome apps, but now how can I find which package causes this mess ?I just installed a few repos to have some recent graphic apps (gimp, inkscape, openshot, scribus... that's it), but I can't see in what way they could have messed with my system.
