Debian :: Squeeze: Appearance Preferences Interface Tab Missing?

May 4, 2010

Yesterday I installed debian squeeze and inside appearance preferences there are: theme, background and fonts tabs but the interface tab is missing. What do I need to install in order to have this missing tab?

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 - GNOME Appearance Settings Missing The Interface Tab?

Apr 21, 2010

I tried out the 10.04 beta in VirtualBox, and the tab for Interface in Appearance Settings was gone. This tab allowed you to edit the appearance of Toolbars in Ubuntu. You could edit whether Icons showed up in the toolbar buttons and whether Text shows up beside it. This is kind of a minor annoyance for me; is there any way to edit this option outside of the appearance settings? I'm sure there is (like editing some config file or GConf), but I'm not sure where.

Ubuntu :: Can't Get GTK Theme To Show Up In Appearance Preferences

May 19, 2010

I installed a theme called 'elementary' and it said I also needed an iconset for it too.so I tried applying that too.but that just said cant move directory over directory. I searched around and found a "solution" that made things worse. Before I applied the "solution" I had the theme working without the icons set.., the so called solution told me to go to my home and press control+h then go to the .themes directory and delete the theme folder and that's what I did... after that everything stopped working.

I got the iconset working but the theme itself is not showing up on the appearence preferences, the current theme is my previous one.. and when I go to customise theme, then window boder tab.. I see the elementary theme there with a question mark on top of the faded thumbnail,I can't seem to delete it too..

edit: when I select the theme custom it says this theme will not work as intended because the required window manager theme 'elementary' is not installed.

Ubuntu :: Most Apps Ignores Appearance Preferences

May 11, 2011

I've just updated to 11.04, switched into the classic desktop (Unity? just say NO), disabled overlay scrollbar, and still I'm confused.

I customized the appearance preferences of my desktop to change the appearances of the widgets. I selected "Clearlooks" but most applications just ignore the preference. Here I attached a screenshot:

While the buttons in "Appearance Preferences" are round-shaped, the buttons in "Network proxy" window are square (probably it's from "Redmond" theme?)

As far as I checked, only the "Appearance Preferences" obeys the setting. Other preferences (e.g. fonts, colors, icons) are ignored too.

Fedora Installation :: Preferences And Appearance Left Over From Ubuntu?

Jan 31, 2009

I just installed Fedora where my old Ubuntu partition used to be (formatted the partition appropriately first). I have my home directory on a separate partition, so I asked Fedora to mount it as /home. Since I made my username the same as it had been in Ubuntu, I have basically all the same home directory in Fedora as I did in Ubuntu. This is desirable and it makes my life easier for obvious reasons, but something happened that I didn't expect.

All the settings (desktop background, top and bottom panels, keyboard preferences, etc.) have transferred over to Fedora. That's okay except that they just don't work as well in Fedora, and I'm stuck with sort of an ugly window scheme etc. I know it wouldn't be too hard to change all this stuff back manually, but I was wondering if there was a way to change it back the Fedora default appearance. Like my deleting a folder in the home directory or something?

Ubuntu :: Theme Only Works For Appearance Preferences Window?

Oct 17, 2010

I got a new computer recently, and just now installed 10.10. Everything was going great.... until when I enabled the Nvidia drivers and set my dual monitors. While things still work fine, it appears I have no theme set (Aside from the Window Border).

When I check in System->Preferences->Appearance it always shows the theme properly for this one window, while all other windows, and gnome panels etc appear to have no theme set (just use simple flat colours, low graphic mode etc).

Changing the theme (via the Appearance window) does not work, nor does a simple reboot.

Ubuntu :: Appearance Preferences Override Firefox Tango Theme

Mar 6, 2011

I just upgraded to ubuntu 10.04 from 9.10, and one of the first things I did was to find a nice desktop theme. I tried several from gnome-look.org and eventually settled on one called "the days of grace"

Anyway, somewhere along the way, while trying out themes, I used a script provided by a theme author which installed the theme automatically, which had undesirable results. I don't remember the theme that did this, so I'll just call it theme x. The theme x script somehow made firefox use theme x instead of the default firefox "tango" theme, and now the tango theme is not available, because the theme x theme supersedes it.

The theme x does not show up in ubuntu's appearance preferences, but somehow it looks to be linked to the theme I chose, "the days of grace." I can switch to a default ubuntu theme (Ambiance, Radiance, etc.) and I have my firefox tango theme back.

Does anyone know how I can delete this theme x theme, and get back the tango firefox theme?

Ubuntu :: GTK Apps Don't Display Correctly On KDE Until Opening Appearance Preferences?

Jul 18, 2011

I recently installed KDE and began using that instead of Unity (less buggy, IMHO) and it was running smoothly until I began configuring my GTK applications for transition in that. I installed the Oxygen-GTK them from gnome-look.org and set that as my default theme for GTK applications under the KDE appearance preferences.

When I log in, however, GTK applications just use the stock Xorg theme until I run "gnome-appearance-properties" in my terminal.I believe that a fix involving .gtkrc would suffice, but I honestly cannot configure it no matter how hard I try.

Debian Configuration :: Missing CD / DVD Device In Squeeze

Apr 3, 2010

I've been testing Squeeze to determine whether KDE4 is finally suitable for my primary machine. Everything seems to be working fine except for detection of IDE devices. My CD/DVD drive no longer automounts and the reason seems to be that no device is being created. My Lenny system detects the drive as /dev/hda, but no such device exists in Squeeze. During boot, Squeeze appears to detect the drive as /dev/sr0 (according to dmesg), but in fact that device does not exist either.I'm actually running the Lenny kernel, as I am unable to compile my Ralink wireless driver (rt2860sta) using the Squeeze kernel. Also, for inquiring minds, I use removable HDD drive bays on my systems to simplify testing.

When last month I installed debian squeeze I missed reiserfs (or did I miss noticing it?) Though Ext3 is giving me no trouble. I would love to have reiserfs. Is it now possible to change the filesystems without much trouble.

Debian Installation :: Incomplete Squeeze - Many Packages Missing?

Mar 25, 2011

I tried to install Squeeze on a new laptop. The installation finished and I was able to log in, but a significant number of packages were missing, including network-manager and network-manager-gnome, OpenOffice, and gdebi. Everything under the System | Administration menu except Login Screen was missing. There's probably more missing, too, but I am not sure how to tell.

It happened a few times but with slightly different results (e.g. I think on one of the earlier install attempts, Iceweasel didn't get installed, but it was included in the most recent attempt). I tried installing using 6.0.1's CD 1, and 6.0.0's hybrid Live image on a USB stick (in both cases, the GNOME version). I had used the same USB stick to install Squeeze successfully on another laptop last week (i.e. I successfully got a complete, working install; I made no changes to the USB stick; then tried to install using it on this new laptop, and saw this behavior).

I tried using both the graphical and text installers. At the step asking what packages you want installed (which allows you to auto-install sshd or mail server, for example), each time I made no changes, so the 3 selected default settings (the first option, Desktop Environment, and the last 2 options, laptop and... whatever the other one is, I don't remember) should all have been installed.

I didn't use the net installer, and I ran the installer offline because both laptops require non-free firmware and I couldn't figure out last week how to get the installer to find that firmware (on another USB stick). So once I got to the GNOME desktop the most recent time, I copied the WiFi chip's firmware .deb onto the laptop and did a 'dpkg -i', then did the same thing to get network-manager-gnome and its dependencies installed; and once I connected to our network I started an 'apt-get install gnome' to try to get the entire desktop environment installed (that also installed the programs that show up under System | Administration).

Is there anything important I might still be missing? Is there a list of installed-by-default packages that I could compare against say a 'dpkg -l'? Does this sound like some sort of known issue?

Debian :: LDAP On Squeeze (6.0) Missing Slapd.conf?

Mar 1, 2011

I try to setup OpenLDAP on Debian Squeeze. But it seems the documentation I found is differed than the installation.

Normally I would expect /etc/ldap/slapd.conf as also mentioned at url. However this file does not exists and I got the feeling Debian changes a lot with the default (bit poor if you asked me).Seems they created a LDAP database and put the config in there, correct me if I am wrong?A folder /etc/ldap/slapd.d is created with some config inside. And also a /etc/ldap/ldap.conf does exist.

Is there any documentation on this, and what if I would like to have a flat config in /etc/ldap/slapd.conf?

Fedora :: Missing 5.1 Surround Profile In Sound Preferences?

Oct 26, 2010

I'm trying to get 5.1 surround sound working on my Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop running Fedora 13 (64 bit), but there is no option for it under "Sound Preferences - Hardware - Profile". There is an option for "Analog Surround 4.0 Output", which does as it says and uses four of the speakers (front and rear left and right) correctly (and the subwoofer as well I think, though not sure if this is done correctly).Running "aplay -L" gives the following:

Quote:
default
Default
frontARD=Intel,DEV=0
HDA Intel, STAC92xx Analog
Front speakers
surround40ARD=Intel,DEV=0

[Code]...

it looks like it should be possible to set 5.1 surround sound (i.e. I don't think it's a driver issue).Though running "speaker-test -c 6" doesn't quite work as it should - it outputs via the subwoofer on "Center" and doesn't produce any sound on "LFE". But to start with at least - is there a way of manually forcing "Analog Surround 5.1 Output" to be a choice under "Sound Preferences"?
