General :: Special Versions Of GNOME Maintained For Slackware / Why Is So?
Apr 22, 2011Newbie here. I'm thinking about going from Ubuntu to Slackware and I just saw on Wikipedia that there is a number of projects that maintain GNOME binaries especially for Slack. So that made me wonder, why is that needed? What if I download a bare version of Slack and then build the standard GNOME version from source? Would that produce problems?

Jul 4, 2010I just installed Arch Linux with Gnome and gdm is set to boot into gnome as soon as it boots.
But I realized that the barebone gnome package that I installed doesn't include a terminal or a text editor so I can't install anything further or modify the rc.conf file to make it boot without gdm.
Is there a way for me to kill x from the Gnome interface?

Afterward go into your login screen and there should be a box saying Ubuntu scroll down on it and pick Gnome.
(NOTE do not have system programs or apps running it will cause install to fail.)

May 25, 2011right now i have fallback mode on its forced me to fallback mode, what i don't get is on the betas of F15 beta worked just fine and now i just goes right to fall back mode. actually its ok i like it the way it is but is there is list of supported video cards and what not?

Jun 6, 2011I have recently upgraded to 11.04 and am running the Classic interface as I don't like Unity.However, I have noticed so far two areas where this Classic version has gone backwards from the default Gnome in 10.10 and earlier.I can't rearrange window buttons on the Window list, nor can I drag-and-drop say FLAC files onto the button for "Movie Player" any more -they end up pinned on the panel!How can I get back the ability to drag window buttons around and and turn off the annoying pinning feature and get drag-and-drop back?

Mar 11, 2011I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 to try out right? Well, I tried to expand the height of the bottom task bar to 35, and when I did, it had an graphical issue happen. Its almost as though the image isnt large enough so it starting repeating it to fill in the height. I think I can do screenshots so I can show below. Is there anyway to fix that?
The other question I have is, why is GNOME and KDE both using such larger buttons and drawing then Windows or even MacOS? Can they be made smaller? I can include screenshots for those if I need to.

May 6, 2010Since I switched to lucid (clean install), the interface has become very slow, unresponsive. I had no such problem in karmic. Switching from one window to another, displaying menus, browsing files, resizing windows etc... take ages to display.Now what is strange, is that this problem only affects native gnome applications.For instance Scribus or Blender run very smoothly, whereas Nautilus, Rhythmbox, Gimp or Inkscape, to name a few, suffer from those horrible lags.I'm pretty sure it's not a driver problem, I'm using the latest nvidia-current drivers, and I tried everything : disabling compiz, disabling metacity compositing, using nouveau, using latest kernels, using xorg server 1.8. No change.
So I know the problem only affects native gnome apps, but now how can I find which package causes this mess ?I just installed a few repos to have some recent graphic apps (gimp, inkscape, openshot, scribus... that's it), but I can't see in what way they could have messed with my system.
Ubuntu :: Will Gnome 2 Style Desktop Interface Be Dead?
May 4, 2011Since Unity and Gnome 3, the desktop interfaces are really changed. I really like the Gnome 2 (classic) interface. I can see every tray icon, every window that opened or minimized at panels, I have my menus, I don't need some mouse tricks to see something. Unity and Gnome 3 are fancy but I don't look for fancy.
Gnome 3 is the next generation. I don't like it. I don't like Unity either. And the problem is Gnome 2 will not be evolved much with its own standard interface because Gnome 3 is arrived. Gnome 2 is getting closer to its end of life. Bugs will not be handled with more attention, compatibilities will be less.So than, I don't like this situation of Gnome 2 either.
CentOS 5 Server :: Updates Have Frozen Gnome Interface
Jun 21, 2010Just setup 5.5 as Server-GUI installation last night. Ran latest updates today; it requested a restart; logged in to console; GUI desktop all looked normal at first, except that the panels on top and bottom are empty, except for the menu "Applications Places System" items (upper left) are there, but non-functional. The desktop icons for "Computer, Home, Trash" are functional. Update as I am writing this: The menu header items are now GONE as well, but icons still work (but don't help me).
Problem is, I don't have access to any apps that will allow me to reboot the machine with access to "Shutdown/Restart". If I hit the reset button, will it be OK? Or will it blow up like a Windows machine? Luckily I can reinstall if necessary, but the update thing might crash me again. All was fine before applying updates. Anybody having problems with the latest updates?
Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 - GNOME Appearance Settings Missing The Interface Tab?
Apr 21, 2010I tried out the 10.04 beta in VirtualBox, and the tab for Interface in Appearance Settings was gone. This tab allowed you to edit the appearance of Toolbars in Ubuntu. You could edit whether Icons showed up in the toolbar buttons and whether Text shows up beside it. This is kind of a minor annoyance for me; is there any way to edit this option outside of the appearance settings? I'm sure there is (like editing some config file or GConf), but I'm not sure where.

Jun 30, 2011I'm not to clear on the difference between LTS versions and other versions, but think I may want to go with LTS. Can someone tell me if my thinking is correct given the following situation: I have some very cool, but very expensive software installed with a group license from my school, a school which I am not going to be attending for too much longer. So I want to go as long as possible without reinstalling Ubuntu, because once the product is licensed it will be licensed until I reinstall Ubuntu (or I uninstall the program). So I think this is going to require me keep the Ubuntu version I install as long as possible.
So in this case, should I go with 10.04LTS or should I just install Natty Narwhal and keep that as long as possible? It looks like 10.04LTS will be "supported" longer, but I'm not exactly clear on all that "supported" entails. Presumable it means security and software updates will be available for 10.04LTS for much longer than 11.x versions? So I'm thinking I should go with 10.04LTS
Is my thinking correct in going with 10.04LTS? Edit: It was pointed out that this would be against my contractual agreements. Which I suppose is probably true.
General :: Different Versions Of Libdc1394?
Oct 15, 2010I'm working on a project that uses libdc1394 to interface with Point-Grey Firewire cameras. We build the code on Ubuntu 8, Timesys, and Ubuntu 9 primarily. We usually use the package manager for most dependencies on the Ubuntu's, and the Timesys installation seems to be compiled from source.
Now here's the part that confuses me. I can't figure out what version of libdc1394 is on the Timesys installation. Looking at the library files, I can find a file named libdc1394.so.20.0.0. But these are the header files that I have:
dc1394_control.h dc1394_register.h dc1394_vendor_avt.h
dc1394_conversions.h dc1394_utils.h
They're in a folder named dc1394. From what I see on the Ubuntu 8 package (which is libdc1394 version
1), I only see dc1394_control.h. And it's in a libdc1394 folder.
From what I see on the Ubuntu 9 computer, which uses libdc1394 version 2.2 (that's the version in the repository), I have a dc1394 folder and then an include directory that looks like the copy I find here:[URL]..
I can't find anything about a major change between version 2.0 and 2.2. From the sourceforge page, it looks like the 2.0 version is similar to the Ubuntu 9 version. it seems I have 3 different versions of the library? I understand why Ubuntu 8 and Ubuntu 9, but not why the copy that we have installed on Timesys is different.
Once again, I'm decently sure the one on Timesys was compiled from source. I wasn't around when they did that though, so I don't know for certain.

Feb 23, 2011I ran into an issue that was written up here on LQ and/or on other sites, the one dealing with an error similar to the following one: error trying to exec 'cc1plus': execvp: No such file or directoryThe solution seems is to make g++ and gcc versions consistent. I've since remedied that, but am slightly confused with my findings and concerned with my solution.
When I first looked in /usr/bin for all references to g++ and gcc, I saw that there were two version of gcc and one version of g++:
(Note the "??? ?? ????" as date for gcc. I've since made some changes, but this was essentially the set of gcc and g++ files that existed before I started.)
I'm told that the system I'm using is an "out of the box" installation, i.e. no modifications. As installed, gcc is the newer version and does not correspond to g++34:
Confusion and concern: When I use makefiles from software I've adopted, I run into the cc1plus problem eluded to above. The cc1plus error occurred because the makefiles expected there to be a command named "g++," so I created a symbolic link, pointing /usr/bin/g++ -> /usr/bin/g++34. And in doing so, g++ was not consistent with gcc. I've since fixed that, i.e. copied the gcc34 version to gcc and my software builds fine.
My question are:
1. Will copying the gcc34 version to gcc cause issues in the future, possibly related to upgrades and/or istallations of other packages that rely on "gcc"? Currently the files are as follows:
2. Were the g++ and gcc files in /usr/bin the "out of the box" versions?
3. How can I answer a question like this in the future, without posting to LQ, i.e. is there a reference to find this type of information?

Oct 11, 2010I love Gnome Do, particularly it's "docky" interface. However, after installing Ubuntu 10.10 I realized that the "Docky" theme was not available anymore. I cecked the Gnome Do website but it seems that docky is still supported. Am I missing something? PS: I don't want to install Docky. The dock is OK, but I like the Gnome Do commands to be integrated with it.

Mar 23, 2010I have an MSI-RC410 motherboard with onboard ATI Radeon XPress 200 series Graphics card.
I have used OpenSuse-11.0 on my PC for over an year. but when I tried to upgrade to OpenSuse-11.1, I managed to install it only to find that several features were missing. for example /dev/cdrom was missing.
Also install DVD of Fedora 11 did not work.
I have also tried Ubuntu-9.10 live cd. When I boot from the CD i get the initramfs command prompt. Still able to install old versions of these OSs.
What is the reason for this behavior?
Does it have to do anything with the new version of the linux kernel not being compatible with my hardware?
What should i do to install new versions of Linux?
General :: New Distribution (kde4 With Pulseaudio) - Update To New Versions
Apr 30, 2011I have tried a lot of distributions, and have been using Ubuntu for the last year or so. However I would really like to use a good KDE4 distribution. I do have some stringent requirements though.
1- Easy and quick to get it up and going.
2- It needs to use pulse (or at least very easy to add it and get it working). I know a lot of people don't like pulse, but I can't do what I need to do without it.
3- it needs to have a large repository (like ubuntu, debian, or any major distribution). It also has to have a good package management system, again like ubuntu, debian, but not like slackware.
4- I would like it to be easy to update to new versions. I don't care if it is a rolling release or not, but I don't want to have to install it all over again each year.
5- I want it to be a stable system, not too cutting edge, but also not too old.
6- It would be nice if it had multimedia codecs, etc included like mint. But it is ok as long as it is not too difficult to get them installed later.

General :: Toshiba RecoveryCD Able To Dual Boot 2 Versions XP?

1.256 GB Ram
40 GB HD
I am trying to use a Toshiba Recovery CD to dual boot 2 versions of Windows XP on the same hard drive. I partitioned my hard drive with GParted, but when I go to do the 2nd install, it says the entire hard drive will be erased. I read in another forum that it may be possible to make the 1st partition invisible or non-bootable;[URL]...Is this possible? I can choose the flag in GParted to "hidden," but I am worried, because if GParted can see the partition, then perhaps the Toshiba Recovery CD can too.
Also, I have several other partitions running Linux, and for some reason GParted won't allow me to select the flag hidden - which wouldn't be the end of the world as I recently installed those linux partitions, but most importantly, I don't want to loose my primary XP partition.
My Toshiba Recovery CD also has Office and Works on it, so I want to at least use this to dual boot 2 versions of Windows XP on the same hard drive. What would be the best way to change the master boot record or hide the other partitions and use the recovery CD?

Jul 22, 2010I have Linux/Linux etch and I cannot seem to download some versions o adobe flash player, when I go to some sites and the require me to download the latest AFP, my computer just stacks it in my downloads and I end up with 10 different versions AFP just sitting in my computer, I thy to open and it says cannot open program etc. also sometimes i go to sites and I cannot type in some comment bars, also some of the links in Yahoo won't work like my address book won't open...i cannot adjust my filters, I click and nothing happens.
