Ubuntu :: Getting Into Grub In Lucid?

Jul 5, 2010

I have been struggling to get into Grub during boot. No matter how many times I reboot and hit the "esc" key.. runs right past Grub and into the splash screen. Every blue moon it will catch the esc and I get the grub menu. I have fixed my original issue by reinstalling the ATI support, but would like to know of any similar issues with Grub.

Ubuntu :: Grub After Recent Lucid Update?

Aug 5, 2010

I've done my due diligence, but I'm tired and frustrated so my googlefu probably isn't up to par at the moment! Been running Ubuntu as my main OS for about a year now, and have been really happy with it. So far I've been able to find solutions to every problem I've had, but I think this one's got me a bit out of my depth. I REALLY don't want to have to reinstall, I'm currently running Lucid as the only OS on this machine, and about an hour ago I installed the most recent updates as provided by the update manager. On reboot, it stopped at a GRUB command line.

I've managed to boot back into Ubuntu by manually loading the linux module etc. and booting. From there I've tried updating grub, and reinstalling grub (No errors on reinstall) but nothing persists. I've taken a quick look at the grub.cfg, but TBH I'm not sure what I'm looking for! [edit] FWIW, I have GRUB 1.981ubuntu7 installed

Ubuntu Installation :: Making Bootable Grub 2 CD In Lucid?

May 3, 2010

It seems that the handy grub-mkrescue --overlay=/boot/grub Grub2CD.iso command that works nicely in Karmic is not the right way to create a cd iso in Lucid.

~$ grub-mkrescue --overlay=/boot/grub Grub2CD.iso
Unrecognized option `--overlay=/boot/grub'
Usage: /usr/bin/grub-mkrescue [OPTION] SOURCE...

/usr/bin/grub-mkrescue generates a bootable rescue image with specified source files or directories.

Ubuntu :: Lucid 10.04.02 Grub No Longer Discovers DOS Partition?

Jun 2, 2011

My desktop gets little use now but I had to do a clean install and found that grub no longer discovers a DOS partition. Even after install,a grub-update also no longer finds the DOS partition. Can anyone explain, or has this been dropped from grub. I do need that partition, rarely, I admit but still, it is needed.

Ubuntu :: Grub Error 18 After Install Of Jaunty Alongside Lucid?

Apr 11, 2010

I had installed Lucid on a clean install on my laptop - three partitions - ext4 home, ext4 lucid and swap.I've been using it for around a week, and find it a bit buggy in places, so I thought I would install jaunty (which proved very reliable in the past). I used the usual installer, and made my /home partition smaller, and created a new ext3 partition for jaunty, assigning the smaller partition to /home.The install proceded without any problems, but on rebooting I just get this:GRUB Loading stage1.5GRUB loading, please wait...Error 18I was hoping that Jaunty would not install grub, but I didn't see any option to prevent this during the installation. I suspect Grub 1.5 has been installed and now it's all messed up

Ubuntu Installation :: CPU Whistling After Choose Win Xp On Grub After Instalation Of Lucid Lynx

May 28, 2010

I was using the 9.10 version of Ubuntu, and everything was ok. So I decided to update to 10.04, by update manager, and it not works pretty well. So I decided to reinstall my ubuntu. In my PC I also have a instalation of Windows XP, my father and sister uses it. The installation went well, no problems, Lucid Lynx is working fine. But in the grub screen, if you choose Win XP, the CPU starts to whisthle continuously, and the only thing you can do is restart.

I have been reading about it, but do not find the exactly same problem. I have posted a thread in a portuguese forum (im from Brasil) and have no good responses. Sorry about the bad English, I dont have to much experience writing.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot From Grub Prompt - CD On Lucid / Sort It?

Sep 1, 2011

First, I know there are numerous threads on grub errors but I have tried all possible solutions and that's why I'm here. My issue is that I'm not able to boot from the grub prompt as described for installing grub from a LiveCD https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Gr...0from%20LiveCD. I can see grub is installed but is missing the kernal and other files. code...

I ran the boot_info script and the output is attached. From what I can tell it cannot even detect an OS being installed, but I've kept everything up to date and never had any issues. Everything was fine yesterday and now this. Also, I tried the Boot Repair CD and that did not work.

Ubuntu Installation :: Multi HDD Dual Boot - Vista + Lucid Lynx - GRUB ?

Apr 27, 2010

I've got a machine that I'd got 9.10 on, that I've now upgraded to Lucid Lynx - and I'm having the same problem with dual boot (or lack thereof) that I was having previously.

Rough scenario is:

(Original Vista machine had)

C: Windows Vista OS + Windows software, etc.: 500GB - single NTFS partition - SATA drive

D: General dumping ground for data. 500GB SATA drive. Was single NTFS partition, now shrunk to install Ubuntu.

So is now:
- NTFS partition (containing general rubbish)
- Ubuntu / partition
- Ubuntu swap partition

... and then 3 x 1TB SATA drives making up an (Intel ICH9R) FakeRaid RAID5 array - that Windows can happily 'see' and use, but I don't care about Ubuntu having access to it or even seeing it.

Lucid Lynx is installed to /dev/sde6 (IIRC) - but when I boot the machine just boots straight into Vista.

I've done what I can to try and get GRUB correctly installed - to the point that right now I probably have it splattered just about anywhere and everywhere.

So - now - the machine boots and simply presents me with "GRUB Hard Disk Error" and stops...

I can fix this by running the Vista repair, with a fixmbr etc. and putting the MBR back to 'normal' on the first boot disk (/dev/sdd in this case). The machine then just boots straight into Vista.

...or I can boot into Ubuntu (or Vista) by booting off a Super Grub Disk (CD) and selecting "Boot Linux" (or whatever it is) - and it correctly boots Lucid Lynx from /dev/sde6

Ideally I want a proper GRUB dual boot menu - but I just seem to be getting into more and more of a mess!

Bootlog below will show what sort of mess I'm in:

Ubuntu :: Rename And Delete Lines In Boot List (GRUB 2) - Lucid Lynx

Aug 28, 2010

how to change (rename, delete) lines from boot list in grub 2, Ubuntu 10.04? For example, when I boot my pc, I have a boot list with options "Ubuntu 10.04", "memtest" and "Windows 7". I want to delete "memtest" line, as I don't need it, and rename "Windows 7" line to, for example, "Windows 117". How can I do that? Where I should look and edit? In old grub it was enough to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst, but in Ubuntu 10.04 there is no such file and other grub2-related files (like grub.cfg) do not contain this info to rename or delete lines. So, I can't figure out what to do.

Ubuntu Installation :: "Upgraded" To Windows 7 And Now Can't See GRUB And Lucid / Fix It?

May 16, 2010

I'm at my wit's end with Windows this morning. I upgraded to Lucid a few days ago. Everything went very smoothly. Then I spent the greater part of Friday and Saturday "upgrading" to Windows 7 from Vista. I chose the "update" option which was only supposed to update to 7 rather than overwrite the entire HD. Now, GRUB doesn't load and I don't see my Linux partition. HOWEVER, it appears as though the partitions are still there! When I look in Winbloze at the HDs, it shows the Windoze HD as the partition size I made it when installing Ubuntu.

Any ideas on how to recover the awesomeness that is Ubuntu from this situation? Or do I need to install it fresh?

Ubuntu :: GRUB 2 : Difference Between 'grub-pc', 'grub-efi' And 'grub-coreboot'?

Jan 6, 2010

I would like to know if there is any differences on how to install and to configure GRUB 2 in the different architectures (BIOS/IBM PC-Compatibles, EFI/MacIntel and Corebbot)? Does the Ubuntu installer automatically recognize the different architectures and install the appropriate GRUB 2 package ('grub-pc', 'grub-efi' or 'grub-coreboot' according to the arch)? Or does it just install 'grub-pc'? Is the location of GRUB 2's configuration files different depending on the arch of the computer? Or are they all located in '/boot/grub/', '/etc/grub/default' and '/etc/grub.d/', no matter the arch of the computer? Are the files' structure and options to configure GRUB 2 ('/etc/grub/default' and the scripts in '/etc/grub.d/') different depending on the arch of the computer?

Is it somewhere in a textfile or so? I cannot find it in /etc/issues or using man -n of man -a or so.

Also, it is not mentioned in /etc/lsb-release.
