Ubuntu Multimedia :: Lucid Low Graphics Mode?

May 15, 2010

This started yesterday.I have been running Lucid since the Beta release with no problems. Yesterday, I found about 20 or so updates ready for 10.04. I looked them over, mostly lib files, so I decided to go ahead and let them update. That evening I rebooted my machine before I left for the night, and it came up with the error "Ubuntu is running in Low Graphics Mode". In a word X is totally hosed. The display is cut just left of center, with part of the windows on the right carrying off the screen to come back onto the screen to the left.

I thought maybe Xconf might have been messed up, but not sure how. The updates I applied did not do anything to Xorg; and my understanding was that I didn't need that file because I am running with an Nvidia card. I tried to "reconfigure" the X settings from the error message, that did not work. I logged into a text only terminal, and copied a good backup of Xorg.conf back into place and rebooted. Same thing, still running in Low Graphics mode.

Ubuntu :: Screen Graphics Corrupted Overlay On Top Of Other App Windows

Jun 14, 2011

Once I launch google chrome

14.0.792.0 (Developer Build 88942 Linux) Ubuntu

(problem happens across various chrome versions and firefox too)

and I visit a site with graphics, still image or ....., I get a screen overlay of the website image positioned near top left of my monitor which overlays its graphics on top of windows of other applications. Interestingly, when I kill chrome the image disappears, then reappears on re-launch of chrome. Somehow chrome is controlling the rendering of its video memory, from killed tabs, outside of its own window.

This I have seen for firefox as well. Its been happening for few months, not on every browser launch but daily nonetheless. The video corruption also prevents mouse cursor cut N paste of text on any application which happens to have its window overlayed in this manner.

I have all the latest updates

ubuntu 11.04
nvidia driver 270.41.19

screen captures of offending overlay do not show up, though I could photograph my screen if need be. Have stopped using beta chrome daily builds, now using default google chrome to verify whether symptoms disappear.

I see no apparent errors in system log or X server log

I did see this error message pop up at the time of garbled graphics on one login: [GPU LOCKUP, switching to software fbcom]

Slackware :: Corrupted Graphics In TightVNC After Upgrading To Slack-13.0?

Nov 13, 2010

I've recently upgraded from Slackware 12.2 to Slackware 13.0 and so far everything works fine with one exception: the TightVNC package that comes with Slackware-13.0 (in /extra) produces a garbled desktop. Applications look fine, but the default desktop of 13.0 is corrupted. Restarting the VNC server doesn't solve the problem. Before the upgrade, I had 1.3.9 compiled from source. I have just installed the 1.3.10 package that came with Slack-13.0 on top of what was there, hoping it would overwrite old files as needed (couldn't find an automatic uninstall procedure for 1.3.9).

I have attached a printscreen. Notice the taskbar and the top left quarter of the screen. Firefox seems to be rendered properly though. Has anyone encountered this before or may have a clue what could be causing it?

General :: Windows 7 - HP Laptop, Corrupted Graphics, Not Booting Win System Board?

Aug 3, 2010

My friend has a HP Pavilion dv2699ea (dv2500 series - somehow *shrugs*) that has stopped working. It's a Core2Duo laptop with a Nvidia GPU. The unit is no longer under warranty. Problems first started a few days ago with the laptop showing corrupted graphics in Windows and BSOD'ing after a few minutes of use. I tried booting to an Ubuntu LiveCD which worked for a while before succuming and crashing as well. The freezing/graphics corruption/BSODing does seem somewhat heat related (CPU runs at ~95'c under load) however I believe that if it is heat related, then it's already damaged components inside.

Now the system has corrupted graphics on bootup[1], including booting Ubuntu[2], and neither operating systems will boot at all (Windows can sometimes get logged in before showing a black screen and becoming unresponsive. Ubuntu just looks like [3] after X starts). (See comment below for links.)

The fact the problem occurs both under Linux and Windows says to me this is not a driver issue. I have run Memtest which passed fine and none of this seems HDD related as I managed to get ~30GB of data off the system before it finally gave up the ghost.

She has been using it repeatedly without giving it adequate ventilation for years (i.e. on the bed, or on a pillow), so it's my opinion that the system board has probably warped over years of cooling/heating and that's causing this current problem. If that is the case, then I can buy a replacement system board and fit it myself, saving about £200 over the cost of an out-of-warranty HP repair. Of course, I don't want to make her spend £100 on a replacement part for it to be the wrong thing, hence asking for a second opinion here!

Hopefully I've covered all the bases here. I'm a former IT support guy myself, so I've tried all the dumb stuff (driver updates, examining memory dumps from BSODs [one 'unrecoverable hardware error', three relating to the graphics card], etc).

Ubuntu Installation :: NVIDIA Graphics Driver - Graphics Mode Option Via The Start (GRUB)?

Jan 26, 2010

I have just installed Ubuntu (9.10) and noted that in order to successfully run the trial off the CD I had to test in "safe graphics" mode. I have an NVIDIA GEforce 6600 GT card - which was discovered by Ubuntu in the first few minutes of the trial and so I activated the recommended driver and continued to test. After a successful trial I installed Ubuntu (dual partition Ubuntu / Windows XP), however, it seems the install didn't activate the required driver (as part of the process) and so I'm unable to get into my newly-installed Ubuntu at all. All I get is a flashing tty screen asking for my username and password - however it's erratic and won't recognise what I type. So - I'm stuck in a catch-22 as there doesn't seems to be a safe graphics mode option via the start (GRUB?) menu list.

Ubuntu Installation :: Corrupted Grub After Upgrade To 11.04?

Apr 9, 2011

Yesterday all my troubles seemed so far away, because I've been using working system with Windows 7 & Ubuntu 10.10, but last night I decided to update to 11.04 from update manager. So, when upgrade was done, I rebooted and saw something like this:

"grub_env_export not found

Do I have a problem with MBR? Will it help, if I load from Ubuntu live cd and try to reinstall grub?

Ubuntu :: Partition With Grub Corrupted - On Dual Boot - What Next

Nov 8, 2010

I have a dual boot drive, one is WinXp the other Ubuntu 10.04. I don't know why, but my ubuntu partition became corrupted (booting from live cd and inputing fdisk -l in the terminal, shoes my partition as unknown type) My Grub was on this partition, and therefore I cannot boot neither one of my two OSs. I would like to recover my linux partition, I figure I can do that only from my WinXp partition, but I don't know where and how to install Grub.

Also, If anyone knows how I could recover from the live CD without booting Windows, please speak up, that would make everything much easier. Another thing, it would be just super if I could recover my whole partition, not just the data, because I would hate to reinstall all the stuff that I had on my Ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Windows Corrupted GRUB - Unable To Reinstall

Dec 26, 2010

for some reason Win7 has gone and run a startup repair (there was two boot options in GRUB, perhaps I chose the wrong one by accident) which has corrupted my GRUB. Now, the only way I can get anything to run is by booting Ubuntu of a live-pendrive/flashdrive! I tried following a couple of walkthroughs that claimed to fix the problem; and I don't doubt that they work - on someone elses computer! I receive errors whenever I try to use things like 'sudo grub' and often (but not always) with 'mkdir' and 'mount' - and I have very little idea what some of them are doing (I gather 'mkdir' is making a directory and 'mount' is mounting a device virtually, but some others are a little harder to guess)

So, I am wondering if someone has a little insight as to how I can fix this and perhaps point me in the correct direction to learning about making my way around ubuntu and these fancy terminal commands! Currently, I am at the stage where I can boot into my flash drive by spamming escape before the bootloader. However, when GRUB loads it tells me there is an error and gives me a command line; through which I have been unable to get anything to happen. I am running Ubuntu 10.10, I believe, and Windows 7 on the same hard-disk and possibly the same partition (though, I am unsure of how Ubuntu works itself into partition's). I also ran a little code (seemed somewhat like a batchfile in windows) that made a txt file of my boot info; I'm attaching it below if that helps at all. Boot Info Results:

[Code]......

Red Hat / Fedora :: Grub Is Corrupted - Does Not Display The List Of Of Bootable OS Options Anymore

Nov 28, 2010

I have a PC with three partitions: C, D, E. The C: and D: partition are NTFS and C: has Windows XP on it. D: holds my data files and folders in the Windows environment. E: has CentOS version 5.x. The machine is dual bootable. When booting up Grub gave me the options to boot to CentOS (by default) or to boot into Win XP (by selecting it).

Recently I used Partition Magic to resize the D: partition. I shrank the D: partition. The freed space space was then used to create a new NTFS partition.

After the partitioning was completed, I rebooted the machine. But now Grub is having a problem. It does not display the list of of bootable OS options any more. Instead there is just a black screen with the prompt:

grub>

What am I supposed to do here?

I am afraid that after I ran Partition Magic somehow Grub is messed up. How do I recover the previous boot options? Or at the minimum, how do I make the the machine to boot into Windows XP?

Ubuntu Installation :: 3D Graphics With Lucid & ATI 9000?

May 6, 2010

I've tried various searches and haven't found anything quite matching this. Please forgive me if I am repeating though. I upgraded my Dell D600 (ATI Mobility Radeon 9000) from Karmic to Lucid. On Karmic, all 3D effects (Expo, Rotating Cube, etc.) worked fine. On Lucid, all still work but, once once enabled, the 3D effect is very dim - almost as if the backlight on the effect itself is turned off (i.e., when rotating the cube, the cube is dark but the background Skydome is illuminated). Once the effect is over, normal illumination returns. Running Karmic from the live disk and the effects are fine again. A buddy upgraded his D610 (next ATI in the line) and does not have the same issue.

Ubuntu :: Lucid 10.04 - Bad Video Graphics Display

Some Background:
Pentium 4 3.06GHz
1.5GB RAM
ATI Radeon 9600

I installed via liveUSB but had to choose the "nomodeset" option by pressing F6. Otherwise after the Ubuntu boot screen the graphics went like that in the attached image. The installation went fine (took less than 15 minutes!) but after the reboot the graphics problem returned. I can't see anything and the system is useless this way. I can't post up any logs (I'm typing this from the liveUSB).

Ubuntu :: Lucid Keeps Losing Graphics Driver?

Jun 4, 2010

I'm having a weird problem with Lucid: whenever I boot my system, it seems to forget there's a graphics driver. The result is that windows don't have title bars, and anything involving fancy graphics is turned off. When I go to the "appearance" settings, I can go to "visual effects", select "normal", and the machine starts looking for a driver, which is found After that shading effects are once again on, but the windows still don't have title bars If I then start the Compiz settings manager, that window and any window that appears thereafter does have a title bar. That way my desktop configuration is pretty much how I want it. The problem is that after starting up again, all the wonkiness is back.

Ubuntu :: Wubi Lucid Cannot Enable Graphics Effects?

May 3, 2010

I can no longer enable them, and after running Compiz-check I received a fail on "Checking for hardware/setup problems." The given reason was "Software Razterizer in use." Any idea what the rasterizer is/does? Would disabling it affect any other processes?

PS: If anyone can link to an article explaining how to switch from W7 Bootloader to Grub 2 (Which I already have installed)

Ubuntu :: Lost Compiz On Lucid With Intel HD Graphics?

Jul 23, 2010

I honestly have no clue how this happened, but compiz now refuses to start. I discovered that somehow GLX had been uninstalled and replaced by SWX (the software rasterizer - this gives Brian Paul as the OpenGL/GLX server vendor strings). Reinstalled GLX, currently have Direct Rendering and the proper vendor strings (SGI and Tungsten, I believe).Still nothing. OpenGL seems to be working fine, as Nexuiz runs pretty well.I tried running compiz --replace from the terminal to get any errors, but it just spits out "Falling back to default window manager", without so much as a hex code to tell me why--------Update---------Ran compiz --debug --replace to see if I could get anything else. Ubuntu Installation :: Best Graphics Card To Work With Lucid 10.04?

Jun 20, 2011

Last month I installed a newer MoBo + CPU and PSU, (See system specs in my signature) and moved from Maverick to Lucid 10.04.

I was running Natty 11.04 64bit up until a couple of days ago, but that was locking up like mad. I did a fresh install of 10.04 over the whole HDD yesterday...though cannot recall it asking me if I wanted 32 or 64bit...will neeed to check)

I'm using an ATI Radeon (Sapphire?) x1650 PRO graphics card - but borrowed from a friend as my previous card wouldn't fit in the upgrade motherboard. Ubuntu is running quite fast with it but often stutters when on Firefox or Chrome. With Natty the system would lock up at least once an hour, with Lucid - at the moment it's only locked up once in 6 hours... I'm assuming this is just problems with Ubuntu and not the card. I get no odd lines or color on the screen.

I'll need to give this card back at some point... I'm wondering if people could suggest other cards (Nvidia/ATI or other) that are known to work happily with Ubuntu 10.04. I've got a budget of around 40, but then I'm not gaming so guess shouldn't need anything too high spec. (My PSU has a PCI-E connector if needed...though doubt it will be!)

Ubuntu Installation :: No Boot Splash In Lucid On System With ATI Graphics Card?

May 7, 2010

I have been unable to get the fancy purple bootsplash (plymouth) since I installed Lucid Lynx on my ThinkPad T43. The bootsplash would up when I had booted off of a Live CD, but all future instances post-install only shows the blinking terminal cursor, followed by the GNOME log in screen. This has occurred after upgrading from Karmic, and after attempting a fresh installation of Lucid. Here's what I've tried so far without success:

comment out "GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0" in the grub file tried running echo FRAMEBUFFER=y > /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/splash update-initramfs -u under su but it did not work because my conf.d directory doesn't contain a file called "splash", but only one file called "resume". This fix was taken from [URL]..A Google search showed that a lot of users with this problem have NVIDIA cards; however I'm running ubuntu on a system with an ATI card.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Boot Fail After Installing Graphics Card?

Apr 1, 2010

I installed a new graphics card (Nvidia GeForce GT240 1 Gb, 128bit DDR3) on my gigabyte VA900M motherboard, with my computer running a dual boot of windows 7 (64 bit) and ubuntu 9.10 (64 bit). The computer would not boot past the memory test stage. To solve this, i flashed the BIOS with the latest upgrade for the motherboard from the Gigabyte website. This still did not work, so, doing the usual "testing hardware combinations by unplugging and replugging", I removed 1 Gb of RAM, which solved the problem of booting past memory test (a case of too much memory?)

Problem: The problem now is, GRUB wont boot from the HD, unless I have the Windows 7 disk (or Ubuntu Live) in the DVD drive. If i dont press a key to boot from the disk, Grub will then load. how to make GRUB boot from the HD? Do I need to redirect/reinstall GRUB? Im pretty sure it is not a BIOS problem.

Ubuntu :: Grub After Recent Lucid Update?

Aug 5, 2010

I've done my due diligence, but I'm tired and frustrated so my googlefu probably isn't up to par at the moment! Been running Ubuntu as my main OS for about a year now, and have been really happy with it. So far I've been able to find solutions to every problem I've had, but I think this one's got me a bit out of my depth. I REALLY don't want to have to reinstall, I'm currently running Lucid as the only OS on this machine, and about an hour ago I installed the most recent updates as provided by the update manager. On reboot, it stopped at a GRUB command line.

I've managed to boot back into Ubuntu by manually loading the linux module etc. and booting. From there I've tried updating grub, and reinstalling grub (No errors on reinstall) but nothing persists. I've taken a quick look at the grub.cfg, but TBH I'm not sure what I'm looking for! [edit] FWIW, I have GRUB 1.981ubuntu7 installed
