Ubuntu :: Grub Error 18 After Install Of Jaunty Alongside Lucid?
Apr 11, 2010
I had installed Lucid on a clean install on my laptop - three partitions - ext4 home, ext4 lucid and swap.I've been using it for around a week, and find it a bit buggy in places, so I thought I would install jaunty (which proved very reliable in the past). I used the usual installer, and made my /home partition smaller, and created a new ext3 partition for jaunty, assigning the smaller partition to /home.The install proceded without any problems, but on rebooting I just get this:GRUB Loading stage1.5GRUB loading, please wait...Error 18I was hoping that Jaunty would not install grub, but I didn't see any option to prevent this during the installation. I suspect Grub 1.5 has been installed and now it's all messed up

I used to dual boot Windows XP and Ubuntu for quite some time now. Yesterday after seeing OpenSUSE installed on my friends lappy, I decided it IS the time to bid goodbye to Windows. I don't play games, just internet browsing, listening to music, some letter writing and movies of course!
So today I removed Windows XP by formatting C: drive and installed OpenSUSE.
I am happy with OpenSUSE, but I still want to dual boot OpenSUSE with Ubuntu. But in the GRUB,only OpenSUSE entry is shown, Ubuntu is nowhere. It seems OpenSUSE has overwritten the Ubuntu GRUB during install and doesn't include Ubuntu in the boot list as Ubuntu does for other OS when we install Ubuntu.
How to create an entry in the GRUB so that I am able to boot into Ubuntu also.

I recently installed Ubuntu Lucid an my Celeron 2.4 Ghz laptop but for some reason I find it slower than Ubuntu Jaunty which is on my Pentium 4 3.00Ghz desktop (especially Gdebi Package Installer. Could this be because of the different processing speeds of the processors, or just Ubuntu 10.04 or because Jaunty has been updated so many times and Lucid is still quite new. It is not just slower, much slower.

I'm trying to keep my desktop without a net connection as up to date as possible. It currently has jaunty installed, but I'd like to upgrade to lucid via dvd, is it possible without going through karmic as an intermediate? I prefer not to waste my DVDs, I'm even passing my lucid disk around to friends after the install.

when it comes to linux, but like the idea and hope one day to get away from microsoft all together. This is the second time I have tried to install ubuntu on my eeepc 1000HG in addition to windows 7. The first version was karmic koala netbook remix, and yesterday it was lucid lynx netbook remix. Its annoying because before the update packages are downloaded and installed it runs smoothly, even additional applications run with no problem, but after restart to complete installation the following error message appears.
error: no such device: 5290ea6f-1bdf-4eda-b56e-2f282662e188. grub rescue>

I want Truecrypt to ask for password for Windows XP as usual but with the standard [ESC] option, on selecting that, i.e via Escape key, I want it to find the grub for the (unencrypted) Ubuntu install. I've installed Windows XP on the 120Gb hard drive of a Toshiba NB100 netbook then partitioned to make room for Ubuntu 10.04 and installed that after the Windows XP install. When I encrypt Windows XP, Truecrypt will overwrite the grub entry in the master boot record (MBR), I believe (?) and I won't be able to choose between XP and Ubuntu anymore. So I need to restore it back.
My setup:
Partitions:
Windows XP, NTFS (to be encrypted with Truecrypt), 40Gb
/boot (Ext4, 1Gb)
Ubuntu swap, 4Gb
[code]....
The key area of the problem is how to instruct Truecrypt when escape key is pressed, and how the Grub/Ubuntu can be made visible to the truecrypt bootloader to find it, when the esc key is pressed. Also knowing as chaining.

My system will not start. It reaches "Grub loading stage 1.5" and "Grub loading please wait....", then the machine tries to restart from scratch. I have tried using my bootable Heron CD but it gets to "Loading Kernel 100%" then tries to restart. I used the Normal option; the other options do not seem to work. Other symptoms are that the wireless mouse has been double clicking for one btton press and resuming from hibernation has often led to the system freezing within a minute or two. Memtest shows the RAM to be OK.

I am a new ubuntu user and I have the following question. When installing the ubuntu 10.10 there is the option "Install Ubuntu alongside another operating system". How safe is it to use this installation option without partitioning and backup-ing my windows files? Does this option make an automatic partition? Is it possible to loose existing windows files? Currently I am using Windows Vista. I know that I can use WindowsInstaller, but I 'd like to avoid it.

Been using since summer 2009 the xserver no backfill from PPA: [URL] and it was working fine with my ATI video card. No heavy CPU usage when restoring from minimized and a general performance boost were the results of that use.But recently made an upgrade and realized that xserver-xorg-core package (check it from synaptic manager) has been upgraded to a jaunty-proposed version and the problems started to appear again! So using Synaptic I selected this package and hit CTRL-E key in order to choose the nobackfill version. This way things got back to normal!

Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 onto my new netbook from a USB stick. The laptop came with Win7 Starter, which I kept on a small partition. Installation was apparently successful, but when I start up the computer, it will go straight to Win7 and GRUB doesn't appear.

New 64 bit Compaq laptop 250 GB with Win 7 pre-installed. Using the Windows disk management tool I shrank the main partition creating 60 GB free space, which I then formatted as F:. Now Windows reports the following partitions:
C: 157 GB capacity, 79% free
HP_TOOLS 99 MB capacity, 93% free
RECOVERY (D: 16 GB capacity, 14% free
SYSTEM 199 MB capacity, 83% free
UBUNTU (F: 60 GB, 100% free
[Code]...
The installer does NOT offer the "alongside" installation option. I also tried a 10.04 live CD installer, and it also did not offer the side-by-side option. So neither installer can see Win7 on the disk. Now how do I do the installation? I'd like to dual-boot rather than devote the laptop to UBUNTU-only.

I'm running gimp2.6 on ubuntu 10.10. I need to use gimp for everyday work. 2.6 is stable, but I'm curious about the development version. A recent post on the gimp developers list referred to 2.7 as "only mildly buggy". Is there a way to install 2.7 alongside 2.6? I'd like to be able to run one or the other. I'd like to be able to install 2.7, but have the option of running 2.6 with all it's neccessary libraries unintefered with.

I burned the .iso to DVD and 11.04 seems to work fine on my Vostro 200 which is currently running 10.10. After hearing all of other peoples problems installing, I thought I might install 11.04 alongside of 10.10 which I noticed was an option. What are, if any, the hangups in doing this? Sounds great if I can play with 11.04 and its settings while keeping my 10.10 going strong.

I just installed lucid, Ubuntu 10.04. The first time I screwed it up by removing the CD to early. Do not remove CD until the tray opens by itself or until the system restarted. The second attempt took only 21 minutes. The only input required from me was the time zone, my name and password. After it restarted I had to right click on the network icon and enter the name of my router (Belkin) and the open "edit connections" and enter the network password. All done.
I did have one questionable moment though. When I clicked on "restart" I got a black screen with this message scrolled all the way down the screen...
"(123.2#####) end request: i/o error, dev sr0, sector 46####".
The pc was froze up, or at least stalled at this point. I hit the reset button and all was well. Is a repair recommended or was that just a technicality that really meant nothing? I intend to continue this thread with updates as I reload all my garbage.

Before you start thinking that I made a mistake with the title of the thread, or thinking that FF5 has not been ye unvelied (it is, its a beta AFAIK), read my story: I dont know how it happened, I think it may be a ppa, but I dont know which one (could it be independent third party sources?). Other ideas are welcomed. Thing is: when I click the FF icon I access to ff5, and there are a number of aps that are not compatible, thus, my need to keep using ff4. I googled and found: [URL]... and tried to follow the instructions: ff5 works without issues ff4: created a new directory in /home/dexter/Compiled/firefox4, where I extracted ff4.tar.bzz.
I have also run Code: firefox -profilemanager and created 2 profiles: Firefox5 and Firefox4 Firefox5 leads to ff5 without issues, I didnt change anything Firefox4: I have tried to link it to the current folder of ff4, so it reads: /home/dexter/Compiled/firefox4. Launchers: the ff icon leads to ff5, no issues newly created ff4 launcher reads: /home/dexter/Compiled/firefox4 -no-remote -P "Firefox4" but when clicked:. Could not launch application, Failed to execute child process "/home/dexter/Compiled/firefox4" (Permission denied)

I have a laptop primarily used for a client work. It is running Debian Wheezy, and wish to keep it intact in case I need to do more work for client.
I would like to install Ubuntu 14.04 alongside Debian, and use Ubuntu as a bit of a play/experiment area, etc... HD has lots of space (600GB free), and as far as I can tell Grub is installed in MBR.
I did some searches, and from what I can tell, it sounds like I can just install Ubuntu from ISO file, specify how much space to use (say 400GB), and that's it. This sounds almost too easy. Once I install and restart machine, will there be selection for what Distro to boot.

I'm not very experienced in working with Ubuntu. I did try it using Wubi to install and that I liked very much. But now with the latest version (10.10) the wubi installer isn't showing every option. How do I get the old interface where you can install it alongside Windows? The first attachment is what I get when opening wubi.exe and the second one is what I would like. That is a 10.04 version.

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium on an HP Mini 210..

I can use Ubuntu from my flash drive, but I want to install it in a partition alongside windows. When I try to do this, I come to an 'allocate drive space' window, but whatever I do I get the error message: 'No root file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu.' I just don't know what this means, or what to do next. I'm loathe to ditch windows, and I don't want to have to use a flashdrive all the time.
