After installing Ubuntu 10.04 on an external HDD (via Live-CD), grub never shows a menu, it only goes to command line.Every time I want to boot, I have to enter these commands:
set prefix=(hd0,1)/boot/grub
set root=(hd0,1)
linux /vmlinuz root=/dev/sda1 ro
[code]....
After the upgrade, I've noticed a problem I haven't had before - hibernating worked fine to the last. The problem is, although the system correctly hibernates, it makes no attempt to "wake" from hibernation when I power it up - it boots normally, and with fsck-ing like it was powered off without proper shutdown (understandably). I don't know why it happens, and I've skimmed the logs, but noticed nothing special. What could be the problem? What could I try? Which log should help someone find that out?

So i tried to install steam with wine installed and i get this error message..The file '/tmp/SteamInstall.msi' is not marked as executable. If this was downloaded or copied form an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run. For more details, read about the executable bit.
Can some one please help me with installing Steam and other windows applications correctly?Also I already tried to fix it with terminal code that still didnt fix it.
i have a problem i have two ubuntu programs on my hard drive. i have old 9.4 and i installed new 9.10 in a partition. i was unable to get old 9.4 to work correctly and i installed new in fear of looseing pics and files. what do i do.

In sda, I have 4 partitions, and I have windows 7 in one of the extended partitions [not in the primary partition].
In sdb, I have 3 partitions. 2 for storage, and 1 10GB drive for Ubuntu. Again, Ubuntu is not of a primary partition.
I had ubuntu 10.04 running on that for a long time. However, I wanted to reinstall ubuntu and use 10.10.This is what I did EXACTLY:Booted from Ubuntu install CD
Chose advanced istall
Selected sdb3 for Ubuntu
I installed GRUB2 on the SAME partition as Ubuntu aka sdb3 Installed then rebooted
I can boot into Ubuntu fine, but whenever I select Windows 7 bootloader from the GRUB menu, the screen goes black, and my PC reboots.

upgrading my Karmic 9.10 to Lucid 10.4 I can't boot anymore to Linux only to Windows.My installation is a WUBI installation and I installed it on the only harddisk I have in the folder c:ubuntuNow when I boot I get a grub prompt and when I do LS I see hd0,msdos01 as partition.Now's I've tried to manual boot it by using the following commands from the ubuntu manual

Decided to try out Ubuntu instead of automatically getting the next Windows OS.
I have a Dell Dimension E310 with on board video card (will be relevant soon, I think).
After trying making my own CD and not being able to at least run the LiveCD (thought it was my fault even thought the MD5 #'s matched correctly), I went to Shipit and got a CD delivered of Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid). When I put the CD into my computer while running windows, the CD is not recognized, which seems strange to me. When I put the same CD into my work laptop (note that both computers are running XP), I can see the contents of the CD. Decide that it might not be an issue and restart the computer in the hope of booting from the CD. CD is never recognized and looking at the bootmenu, it has USB-cdRom at the top of the list.
More information: CPU is an Intel Pentium 4, 3.2Ghz. I don't believe it is a 64bit computer but I can't verify that. I mention this because I believe the CD I got is the 32bit version and that it should be sufficient but I figured I'd throw it out there in case someone else knew something.
When I iried to install bugzilla on my Ubuntu Lucid, I kept getting the following message. I have used "sudo apt-get --configure -a " and this is as far as I can get with the installation. Is there a way of first stopping the process and then removing Bugzilla, as it has locked the admin for apt.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI was using the 9.10 version of Ubuntu, and everything was ok. So I decided to update to 10.04, by update manager, and it not works pretty well. So I decided to reinstall my ubuntu. In my PC I also have a instalation of Windows XP, my father and sister uses it. The installation went well, no problems, Lucid Lynx is working fine. But in the grub screen, if you choose Win XP, the CPU starts to whisthle continuously, and the only thing you can do is restart.

First, I know there are numerous threads on grub errors but I have tried all possible solutions and that's why I'm here. My issue is that I'm not able to boot from the grub prompt as described for installing grub from a LiveCD https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Gr...0from%20LiveCD. I can see grub is installed but is missing the kernal and other files. code...
I ran the boot_info script and the output is attached. From what I can tell it cannot even detect an OS being installed, but I've kept everything up to date and never had any issues. Everything was fine yesterday and now this. Also, I tried the Boot Repair CD and that did not work.
i currently have lucid installed on my laptop hard drive. i took this drive out and then on a new drive in its place i have installed windows 7. reason why i couldn't put windows 7 on the same drive is that i have a BIOS based system and the hard drive is GPT based not MBR. therefore, i couldn't get windows back on it.
I figured that using an esata expresscard interface i should be able to use the Windows 7 drive externally without much speed penalty since ExpressCard in my case is implemented on PCI Express and not USB.
So i can update grub using

and Windows 7 appears on the list. However, when i select this option during boot, it gives me errors that indicates that the external drive cannot be found (not surprising)
My guess is that when GRUB appears, the external hard drive has not been detected yet, and the modules for the expresscard may only be loaded during the boot process of lucid.
So I am wondering if there is anyway I can get this to work. meaning use lucid on my main drive and boot to Windows 7 from the external drive time to time.
I installed Lucid earlier today (took about 4 hours as karmic wouldn't write the cd so had to use wifes Mac OS)
In the 2 previous releases of ubuntu I have had to add irqpoll to the boot line in order for my USB ports to work. I dont understand why this works but it does.
With the new "noninteractive" boot I can't work out how to add irqpoll to the boot sequence.
I am really not very Linux savy. Have been using Karmic for about a year and wanted to test Lucid NBR on my netbook by running it from a USB stick first. Had loads of problems and bugs with it - However even an idiot like me can work out most of them. However I am suffering from this bug (I think)

Last month I installed a newer MoBo + CPU and PSU, (See system specs in my signature) and moved from Maverick to Lucid 10.04.
I was running Natty 11.04 64bit up until a couple of days ago, but that was locking up like mad. I did a fresh install of 10.04 over the whole HDD yesterday...though cannot recall it asking me if I wanted 32 or 64bit...will neeed to check)
I'm using an ATI Radeon (Sapphire?) x1650 PRO graphics card - but borrowed from a friend as my previous card wouldn't fit in the upgrade motherboard. Ubuntu is running quite fast with it but often stutters when on Firefox or Chrome. With Natty the system would lock up at least once an hour, with Lucid - at the moment it's only locked up once in 6 hours... I'm assuming this is just problems with Ubuntu and not the card. I get no odd lines or color on the screen.
I'll need to give this card back at some point... I'm wondering if people could suggest other cards (Nvidia/ATI or other) that are known to work happily with Ubuntu 10.04. I've got a budget of around �40, but then I'm not gaming so guess shouldn't need anything too high spec. (My PSU has a PCI-E connector if needed...though doubt it will be!)
I've got a machine that I'd got 9.10 on, that I've now upgraded to Lucid Lynx - and I'm having the same problem with dual boot (or lack thereof) that I was having previously.
Rough scenario is:
(Original Vista machine had)
C: Windows Vista OS + Windows software, etc.: 500GB - single NTFS partition - SATA drive
D: General dumping ground for data. 500GB SATA drive. Was single NTFS partition, now shrunk to install Ubuntu.
So is now:
- NTFS partition (containing general rubbish)
- Ubuntu / partition
- Ubuntu swap partition
... and then 3 x 1TB SATA drives making up an (Intel ICH9R) FakeRaid RAID5 array - that Windows can happily 'see' and use, but I don't care about Ubuntu having access to it or even seeing it.
Lucid Lynx is installed to /dev/sde6 (IIRC) - but when I boot the machine just boots straight into Vista.
I've done what I can to try and get GRUB correctly installed - to the point that right now I probably have it splattered just about anywhere and everywhere.
So - now - the machine boots and simply presents me with "GRUB Hard Disk Error" and stops...
I can fix this by running the Vista repair, with a fixmbr etc. and putting the MBR back to 'normal' on the first boot disk (/dev/sdd in this case). The machine then just boots straight into Vista.
...or I can boot into Ubuntu (or Vista) by booting off a Super Grub Disk (CD) and selecting "Boot Linux" (or whatever it is) - and it correctly boots Lucid Lynx from /dev/sde6
Ideally I want a proper GRUB dual boot menu - but I just seem to be getting into more and more of a mess!

When the remote X client attempts to access the X server on Lucid it receives an error indicating that there is no matching MIT Magic Cookie (hereafter cookie) for the display. It turns out that this is true. I'm of the belief that the subject cookie should be generated for my display when the X session is started on Lucid.I thought this was being done by GDM when I logged on. However, $HOME/.Xauthority contains only 1 cookie which is for the display identified as "Pluto/Unix:0" (Pluto is the name of the host). I'm expecting a cookie for a display identified as "Pluto.my.test:0" where "my.test" is the domain name for my network.

I switched from Sidux to Ubunbtu Lucid yesterday. On Sidux I had to struggle a little but to get this scanner working but at the end everything was fine. However on Lucid no success, I googled around and followed different instructions found in the www. sane-find-scanner and scanimage -L can find it (but it takes some time for scanimage -L) however I cannot scan and the scanner also does not react at all. The reaction of iscan and all the other scanning software is not consistent, error messages vary. A am thinking about switching back to some older Ubuntu version in case that I cannot get it running, I need the scanner in order to send fax

1. Add this ppa: ppa:doctormo/xorg-wizardpen (I've went to System-Administration-Software Sources-Other Software-Add and copy-pasted this at the APT line: ppa:doctormo/xorg-wizardpen )
2. Install xserver-xorg-input-wizardpen (I went to System-Administration-Synaptic Package Manager and typed wizardpen (on the QuickSearch bar) It showed me that there is a packet called xserver-xorg-input-wizardpen, I have right-clicked and check Mark for Installation, and then went to Apply button.)
3. Run cat /proc/bus/input/devices in the terminal (I openned Applications-Accessories-Terminal and there I pasted (by that I mean pressing Middle-mouse button this way you can easely paste) this code: cat /proc/bus/input/devices)Now it will show all the devices on your computer, so you need to find the event for your tablet. I wanted to get 10.10. I download it and install it and it tells me to restart like normal. But, when i restart, and select the ubuntu option, it gives me a countdown that says "Completing Ubuntu installation". Then, nothing happens... just a blinking white line.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've just upgraded my web/tv setup from 9.10 to lucid and everything seems to be working apart from my infra red remote control.The remote was working fine in 9.10 and was used to control mythtv-frontend however after the upgrade the remote appears to be controlling ubuntu natively, i.e. right left up and down control what is selected on the desktop where as previously the remote was set to only work within mythtv. Whilst native support for my remote control is muchly appreciated(if that is what this is) where can I configure the controls so that it is usable again?

I have Mac OS X on a second hard drive, and GRUB/BURG detects 32-bit and 64-bit versions of OS X. Problem is, my CPU isn't x86-64, so I don't need the x64 version. Also, I have to use the BIOS to select OS X, because GRUB won't boot correctly to OS X anyway. 30_OS_Prober detects them despite all my efforts. Is there any way that I can block /dev/sdb boot entries?I have FreeBSD on /dev/sda3 and GRUB won't autodetect it. It's under 40_Custom, but still won't appear.
