Ubuntu :: Lucid Lynx After Restart Error: No Such Device - Grub Rescue

when it comes to linux, but like the idea and hope one day to get away from microsoft all together. This is the second time I have tried to install ubuntu on my eeepc 1000HG in addition to windows 7. The first version was karmic koala netbook remix, and yesterday it was lucid lynx netbook remix. Its annoying because before the update packages are downloaded and installed it runs smoothly, even additional applications run with no problem, but after restart to complete installation the following error message appears.

After lots of searching last night I noticed that over the last couple of days there have been quite a few posts of people receiving the error: no such device lots of numbers grub rescue>. I have a dual boot vista/ubuntu setup with ubuntu on my d: drive and windows on my c: drive and it happened to me last night. So after my freaking out when I received the grub rescue> error after updating somethings in my ubuntu install and restarting. Once the computer rebooted bam! error. after much freaking it only fixed itself by reinstalling the windows bootloader via the vista rescue disk I was wondering if there was a way to prevent this from happening again? will ubuntu attempt to "update" itself again?
I have two partitions installed on my computer, Ubuntu 10.04 (part. sda2) and Windows XP (part. sda1). When I restart my computer I get this message: error: file not found grub rescue>
I thought this must be a grub error, so I booteda Super Grub disk (v 0.9799). Then I tried to fix grub with the Super Grub disk, but I got this message: Error 15: File not found Booting 'not lucky' pause SGD has NOT succeeded SGD has NOT succeeded
I then booted the system using an Ubuntu live CD, version 10.04.I tried to repair the sda2 Ubuntu partition. At a terminal prompt I ran [code] sudo e2fsck -f -y -v /dev/sda2. This did not work. It ended with "e2fsck aborted". I could not repair the Ubuntu partition, I tried to open the sda2 partition by running the terminal command [code] sudo mount /dev/sda2 /mnt. I received the following message:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda2 missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so
Using the ntfs-config program, I can easily mount the Windows XP partition (sda1). It mounts and I can read or write the files on the Windows XP partition. So at least Windows XP is not damaged. I downloaded and ran the boot info script, and here are the results:

I updated yesterday and now when I start my laptop it goes in to grub rescue mode. I have booted from a 'live cd' and thought I could repair grub from there. In gparted however the partition with ubuntu (sda1) is seen as unknown file system, in terminal when I list the partition table it shows up as FAT16 type. When I try a grub-install it gives this error message:
I have recently decided to try out Ubuntu(Lucid Lynx) using wubi. Everything was absolutely superb and realizing that I have a lot to learn and looking forward to it. Everything was fine until I updated and ticked 2 boxes for updating grub and restarted and couldn't boot into anything. I have xp on 80gb 2.6 celeron, and Ubuntu loaded through wubi on 320 gb external hard drive.

It may seem a little slow for me to put to the test your responses, because I will have to disconnect the PC that I am using and use those connections on the 2.6. This one I am using at the moment is 400hz p3.
I just installed Ubuntu on a separate hard drive alongside Vista, and after restarting, my computer booted to a screen that said, "error: no such device: xxxxx-xxxx-xxxxx-xxxx (I don't remember exact number, if I need them I'll go back and write em down) grub rescue>"
After a bit of searching I found this thread: [URL].. I tried the first part twice which didn't change anything, so I tried the last part which was too fix the vista bootloader, which worked perfectly, and now I can get into at least one operating system. Would anyone please help me get a bootloader working so I can choose between Ubuntu and Vista? Also, is it worth mentioning that right before the computer shut down after installation, I had a huge list of I/O errors?
EDIT: After further searching I read that the I/O errors were commonly because of a faulty cd or it was spinning too fast. I think my problem with that was that it was spinning too fast, it was incredible loud and there was a huge amount of wind coming out of my computer XD. iirc I have to go to the BIOS to change disc speed?
EDIT2: I think all my problems stem from a faulty CD. I remember setting the burning speed too the highest setting when I burnt the live CD, I guess I thought faster was better.
I downloaded wubi to install it on my old desktop which runs windows xp pro. The installation went through and it asked for some updates. After the updates, it rebooted but got stuck to the msg in the topic sentence. I don't have no live cd's for ubuntu and tried to read some earlier threads but they don't make any sense to me as I have no previous knowledge of linux. how to deal with this in a simpler language?
I had Ubuntu installed, i installed Debian and there was no dual boot. So i formated all the hard disk to install only Debian. It installed but at boot i get error: no such device and the grub rescue> prompt. i googled for a solution and nothing worked:
- i tryed reinstalling grub, not worked - i did the windows cd fixmbr trick, not worked - reinstalled debian with fixmbr the first step and nothing - tryed deleting with dd the mbr, not worked - reinstalled grub from debian rescue, not worked
what should i do? i can't access my computer? please tell me how should i fix it? the google guys will kill me because i put their servers on fire
After upgrading to 10.04 from 9.10 Win7 wouldn't startup any more. So I tried this HowTo: [URL] to restore Grub2. But now each time I boot up I get this two lines: error file not found grub rescue> I have NO idea what to do.
I already had windows 7 installed on my raid. So I figured that I would install Ubuntu on my 250gb external. I burn it, boot to CD, and tell it to wipe and install the external hdd. After installation it prompts me to take out the CD, then press enter for it to restart. It restarts, gets all the way through and then says:

I am unfamiliar with this issue, and would have looked for a fix on my windows side, but now I am unable to boot into my windows side at all.
Have installed ubuntu on a separate partition on single hard disk and system initially worked on a dual boot basis with windows xp. However after installing most recent series of updates computer is failing to boot.

I just (for the first time ever) installed a version of Ubuntu. It is 10.04. I installed off of the Live Disk. I was having a great time until the first time I went to boot into it and I got the message "Error: No such device: "long number" Grub Rescue> "
I installed Xubuntu 10.04, and it was working somewhat smoothly(little drivers, but I could see and hear). Ran the update(as of 3 hours ago), and started up the machine. Here is what greeted me. Tonight for the first time I tried to use Linux (Ubuntu). I installed it on to a small 100gb external HDD that I had just laying around. I thought I could do this without impacting my internal hard drive. I thought I could run Windows 7 normally when it wasn't plugged in and chose between Windows 7 or Ubuntu when it was. I installed it correctly (or atleast I thought). It worked fine but I then noticed I could only boot into Ubuntu or Windows 7 when it was plugged in. Having a laptop and going everywhere with it I could not tolerate it. When I tried to boot the system without the External HDD plugged in I would always get a "GRUB Rescue-No such Device" error and a white command line.
Confused I looked up how to uninstall Ubuntu, I got a windows recovery disc and deleted the partion off the External HDD. I then changed the BIOS settings so the CD would be booted first, well for whatever reason I get the same GRUB Error. It seems like I cannot boot into any CD Rom. Neither a recovery disc nor a Live CD. I got so frustrated I tried to system restore but it appears like the key command for that is also not working. I can't boot into anything and I'm stuck with the same Grub error. Im so confused and frustrated...I'm thinking about taking It to a pro and paying them to get it fixed or just calling it quits. I have no idea what I can do if Ibcan't boot from any CDs or any OSs.
I was dual-booting Ubuntu 11.04 just fine for about the last week but then ran into some issues and decided to reinstall Ubuntu. Now after the install I get this error: error: nu such device: d38af2a9-740e-4d3c-b267-2a3848e5d319 and it goes into the grub rescue command prompt screen. I have tried to reinstall Ubuntu about 6 times now, complete installs. I have tried changing boot priority multiple times. I installed off a thumb drive and left the thumb drive in after install, took it out after install.
I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 on hd1 - /dev/sdb1 at the end of the installation I chose to install grub at hd0 - /dev/sda1. The file system I chose was ext4 for ubuntu "/" - 50 GB, ext3 for "/home" - 5 GB, and 1.5 more for swap. When the installation was complete I got the following prompt:

There was nothing I could do, pressing TAB did not show me all the commands like grub is expected to. Typing 'help' did not show any commands as well, instead it showed me - "NO SUCH COMMAND" or something like that (I did not took note of what the output was). I believe the problem is in the grub loader - which was not really installed properly in hd0 - /dev/sda1 (which is FAT32 - windows)
I tried to install Ubuntu as a dual-boot on my Windows XP machine, using the USB stick trial OS and automatic installation. My screw-up came when I left my external USB hard drive plugged in during the install, and as far as I can tell, Ubuntu was installed on that as opposed to my internal HD. Now when I try to boot, I get knocked straight to the grub rescue prompt with an error message that basically shows my "no such device (my external's ID)" -- assuming that the MBR (which I know nothing about editing) is trying to boot off the external that isn't actually enabled until an OS starts it up, and dumping me at the rescue prompt when it can't find it.
I can still load up the trial Ubuntu off the original USB stick (though can't get online with it without wireless drivers), but that's as functional as the computer gets right now. And I don't have a Windows Setup CD anywhere (using a rooommate's Mac at the moment with a terrible European keyboard on it). So is there any way to edit the MBR or something to tell it to boot my regular XP off my internal HD, at which point I can re-partrition and try this whole thing again, or otherwise remove the failed install of Ubuntu through the trial-stick or... well, I'll leave the suggestions up to you all. I've been working on this since about 4am last night and my brain is kind of fried.
I was using the 9.10 version of Ubuntu, and everything was ok. So I decided to update to 10.04, by update manager, and it not works pretty well. So I decided to reinstall my ubuntu. In my PC I also have a instalation of Windows XP, my father and sister uses it. The installation went well, no problems, Lucid Lynx is working fine. But in the grub screen, if you choose Win XP, the CPU starts to whisthle continuously, and the only thing you can do is restart.
I have been reading about it, but do not find the exactly same problem. I have posted a thread in a portuguese forum (im from Brasil) and have no good responses. Sorry about the bad English, I dont have to much experience writing.
I've got a machine that I'd got 9.10 on, that I've now upgraded to Lucid Lynx - and I'm having the same problem with dual boot (or lack thereof) that I was having previously.
Rough scenario is:
(Original Vista machine had)
C: Windows Vista OS + Windows software, etc.: 500GB - single NTFS partition - SATA drive
D: General dumping ground for data. 500GB SATA drive. Was single NTFS partition, now shrunk to install Ubuntu.
So is now: - NTFS partition (containing general rubbish) - Ubuntu / partition - Ubuntu swap partition
... and then 3 x 1TB SATA drives making up an (Intel ICH9R) FakeRaid RAID5 array - that Windows can happily 'see' and use, but I don't care about Ubuntu having access to it or even seeing it.
Lucid Lynx is installed to /dev/sde6 (IIRC) - but when I boot the machine just boots straight into Vista.
I've done what I can to try and get GRUB correctly installed - to the point that right now I probably have it splattered just about anywhere and everywhere.
So - now - the machine boots and simply presents me with "GRUB Hard Disk Error" and stops...
I can fix this by running the Vista repair, with a fixmbr etc. and putting the MBR back to 'normal' on the first boot disk (/dev/sdd in this case). The machine then just boots straight into Vista.
...or I can boot into Ubuntu (or Vista) by booting off a Super Grub Disk (CD) and selecting "Boot Linux" (or whatever it is) - and it correctly boots Lucid Lynx from /dev/sde6
Ideally I want a proper GRUB dual boot menu - but I just seem to be getting into more and more of a mess!
how to change (rename, delete) lines from boot list in grub 2, Ubuntu 10.04? For example, when I boot my pc, I have a boot list with options "Ubuntu 10.04", "memtest" and "Windows 7". I want to delete "memtest" line, as I don't need it, and rename "Windows 7" line to, for example, "Windows 117". How can I do that? Where I should look and edit? In old grub it was enough to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst, but in Ubuntu 10.04 there is no such file and other grub2-related files (like grub.cfg) do not contain this info to rename or delete lines. So, I can't figure out what to do.
I had a nicely working karmic 64bit/windows XP install, but the "upgrade" button to 10.04 has finally got the better of me. -Ran Windows XP Media Center for most of the life of this HP Pavilion notebook with 2 hard drives, C: and D:, no partitions except the default HP recovery partition
-Yesterday, installed Ubuntu 9.10 through Wubi on D: from an ISO (because the CD drive doesn't work). I assigned it 30gb on D:, which I assume created a 30gb FAT32 partition on this secondary drive.
-Dual booted successfully from Grub between XP and Ubuntu, so I thought, "Mission accomplished" and started making friends with GNOME. Got a pretty good score in Tetris.
-Was asked if I would like to update to the latest Ubuntu (10.04 I think?) which struck me as a good idea. Everything went smoothly until it asked me to reboot.
-Reboot brought me to a command-line that says "grub rescue>" and above it says "error: no such device: e76e00f3-........" (there's more, I can write it out if that helps)
-Rebooted several more times (cause that usually fixes things) but just got back to "error: no such device: ..." and "grub rescue>"
And that's where I am now. I have almost no experience with how Linux (UNIX?) works differently than Windows or how to use the command line. I know that the hard drives are (hd0), (hd1) instead of C: and D: and that everything important seems to start with "sudo" and that's about it. I was going to ease myself into the whole thing gradually, picking up little bits as I go along. But now I'm just stuck in command line limbo and none of my usual troubleshooting strategies apply here, not even yelling rude things about the computer's manufacturer.
Ubuntu 10.04 was in small slave-disk, and I put other bigger disk same type IDE/ATA.In first start I get message: "no such device....., grub rescue."Anyway, I make installation in this disk and and now after start message is: "error: out of disk, grub rescue.So now I can not use master/XP and no slave/Ubuntu.
I'm inexperienced in Debian. I have a dual-boot machine (64-bit, Debian 7.3, Windows 7, legacy boot) and encouter a problem at boot ever since I completed the installation of Debian 7.3 alongside the exising Windows 7. This machine has six hard drives: two are intended for ntfs storage of general data (raided together by RAID1); two more are intended for ext4 storage of general data (also raided together by RAID1); the fifth contains the Windows OS files and the sixth contains the Debian OS files. The problem is that I arrive to the grub_rescue each time at boot, seeing the message:

Ubuntu 9.10 was set up to handle the booting selection - previously I thought it was xp but Ubuntu 9.10 "did" it. The system started out as a xp / ubuntu 9.10 dual boot on a 400gb drive. xp has 210gb, ub has 80 and their is a 100gb shared storage. Xp was installed first and then I followed a guide over at linuxconfig.org to get ub installed so that I could select which OS was wanted at boot. Ubuntu manages the boot up menu (Went back to look at my notes from the original setup) The owner tried to update to ub 11.04 and afterall was said and done the machine now boots to the message
error file not found grub rescue I can't say if 11.04 was properly installed or not. Ask whatever you like and I'll give the best answer I can. I think the xp install is okay but I can't say for certain as I don't know how to boot it outside the bootmanager at startup. Data has been saved so if I have to blow it all away and start over I can but I'm hoping I won't have to.
I know this is a common error, but my situation is a little different than previous threads on this issue and I just want to make sure I get the correct solution.
Basically, I had Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows 7 on my netbook and wanted to try a more lightweight version of Ubuntu. After settling on LXDE for a desktop, I decided to install Lubuntu 10.04. I chose not to install LXDE over regular Ubuntu because I wanted to eventually end up with an Ubuntu distro with either GNOME or LXDE, but not both. So rather than put myself through the hassle of uninstalling all the GNOME or LXDE packages, I decided to keep them each on separate partitions.
In the end I decided to just stick with regular Ubuntu and deleted the Lubuntu partitions. Now I get the GRUB error written in the title of this thread.
