It worked fine for awhile, but recently my usb keyboard wont work, ONLY IN GRUB. So I cant use grub to select another boot option. This kbd does work in Ununtu and on my other XP machine. Old version of Grub, I believe. (not GRUB 2). No error messages displayed.
View 2 RepliesMy 13 year old Pentium 3 1.3 ghz machine is finally ready to call it quits. specifically, my slave drive where all of my music is stored. I can access a very small portion of the the files on the HD, The files are still there but are not showing up. any ideas on how I could access this drive. I wanted to try to reinstall my os on the primary drive in hopes that it wouldget it working, unfortunately I've run into what's seems to be a common problem of my usb keyboard not being recognized.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a mini tower that started life using only Windows XP, I converted it to dual boot Umbuntu 10.04 and Windows XP. So far, so good, since I was using a ps2 mouse and keyboard. My problem started when I converted to wireless keyboard and mouse.....the bios recognizes the keyboard, both operating systems recognize the keyboard and mouse....BUT!!, the grub loader recognizes neither. Now, I can get around this problem by 1. letting Umbuntu load by default or unplugging the USB connection device for the keyboard and mouse and replugging my old ps2 keyboard long enough to boot to the system that I want to use.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have dual boot (winxp) which has been working for over a year now.But for some reason recently, grub wont recognise the keyboards arrow keys. ie cant change menu selection. in fact it wont recognise keyboard at all it seems. Pressing enter wont work either. I have to wait for the timeout.
The arrows work before hand (like in bios settings) and after once ubuntu has booted. Just not in the grub menu
Its something to with the USB wireless keyboard. If i replace it for standard PS2 kybd it works.
Computer: Toshiba Satellite Pro L510 laptop, 10.10.This has always happened but I have gotten around it by time-out and putting my menu.list in order. When I first boot the machine (switch on for the day from computer being off) I get to the grub options to select a kernel and I have no keyboard. No up/down arrows so have to go with the kernel on top of the list (not always desirable).
When I get to the log-in screen if I hit restart and go back to the grub screen I have a keyboard and can select any kernel. If I login to the kernel I have full keyboard, no problem. If I then restart, I have keyboard at the grub list.
Nutshell: It is only when starting the computer fresh that the keyboard is dead at grub menu (and then only). Any time after that, once the computer has been switched on, if I restart I have keyboard at grub menu and can select different kernels. (Of course, if I switch the computer off and back on again, no keyboard ...)
I just installed a new keyboard in my father's Windows 7 PC, and the computer will recognize it, but won't function! Is there some way (preferably open-source) that I can get this keyboard to work? It works completely fine on my Ubuntu 11.04 machine.The keyboard is not from a big manufacturer, but it's model number is W-9868. I already looked for an official driver and I got nothing.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have have just installed 10.10 on my Acer Aspire laptop. I connected to the Internet during installation and therefore should be right up to date. Grub2 does not show Windows 7 as a boot option. Did a bit of searching and ran sudo update-grub2 but no success. I am a newbie as far as Ubuntu is concerned. I installed 9.04 on my netbook and that worked fine. I have the added problem in having to get into Windows very shortly and I haven't a clue how to do it if grub remains broken. Windows partition still there I have not deleted it.

I installed Vista on sdb1 and later Ubuntu on sda1.
When I boot up, I am given choice of OS's to boot into. That worked fine until I formatted sdb1 and installed Windows 7.
Now when I boot, I am given the exact same options as before, and when I select the the old "Vista" Menu item, it gives me an error that it can not find some long serial number. The number is not my drive serial number. That number is completely different.
I can still boot into Ubuntu with out a problem.
Now, in order for me to boot into windows, I have change the BIOS boot order. That is obviously not ideal.
I recently installed Ubuntu 11.4 and I want dual-boot machine. Before Ubuntu on machine was installed only windows7. Since I install Ubuntu I do not see Grub(or any other) boot loader. When I start computer it automatically boot Ubuntu without prompting choose OS menu.
How can I set grub2 to ask me this question?

in my first start on fedora 13, with grub 0.97 did not recognize ubuntu licid, but recognizes winxp, now i try to change to grub 2 but, always begin whit grub1,
how i can replace grub1 by grub2 or how i can boot from grub2 of lucid?
So I am experimenting with other linux distros.....I just installed a small partition with OpenGEU, the one still based on Ubuntu.....now it wont recognize Mint. Ubuntu Studio is next on my list, but before I invest any more work I want to make sure I can add more partitions to grub, not just the most recent linux partition...
I think that future distros of linux should have a fix for this....if you install linux it should detect every other operating system on the disk, not just windows plus the most recent linux install.
install /boot separate? I always create a / and /home partition but never separate boot. Does that make life easier?
i can't boot up my win XP after installing Ubuntu 10.10.
I decided to replace my Vista partition with Ubuntu 10.10 so i redo my partitions and split the current Vista partition to a swap and root partition and install Ubuntu 10.10
Everything went well and i got Ubuntu up and running. However, i realize that GRUB 2 didn't recognize my existing windows partition. I double-check on grub.cfg and see that the default os_prober didn't recognize my XP partition either.
After search on the internet for a while, i found many similar issue where most are fix when manually adding the entry yourself so i decided to add an entry 11_XP under /ect/grub.d/ for windows XP and confirm that the new entry are added to the update grub.cfg file before restarting

I have a nice spare K6 machine with a 66G drive and OS/2 Warp 4 installed on the primary partition, which is all of 2G, formatted in HPFS. Like DOS, OS/2 can only be on the primary partition. I have set up and formatted 3 additional partitions as ext2 or ext3 using qParted. GRUB is a great bootloader, but does not seem to recognize the primary partition at all, making multiboot difficult. Is there a way of getting GRUB to recognize the HPFS?

I have just installed Fedora 11 64bit on a new hard disk, using Intel 975BX2 motherbord, 3Gbyte RAM, 320Gbyte hard disk etc., USB mouse and keyboard. The installation went fine, but when I enter the password for the boot (I assume GRUB was installed) it fails to recognise the password. Do this three times and the boot segment ??? fails to initialise.
I recall a linux magazine i buy indicating that you have to copy and paste the password manually after installation, but i cannot recall the article date. Is this a problem - the password protection for the GRUB boot loader does not work at installation time when using the graphical interface ?. I did not use any odd characters - basic letters and numbers.
First time this has happened. I installed Fedora first (XP already installed) and then installed Ubuntu 9.10 64. Fedora doesn't show up on boot up menu. I've tried update-grub.
Before I would have just edited menu.lst, but now?? I dunno.

The thing is that I had installed Windows 7 in the hard disk drive so I decided to install Ubuntu alongside with it. After the process of installation everything was cool but I hadn't the Grub working. I then pressed the Shift button during the booting process so I got the Grub menu but it didn't show the Windows 7 partition. The Windows installation was not erased because its file system is present in Nautilus. I have tried reinstalling the Grub a thousand times but nothing changes. I have attached the results of the boot info script so you can have some info about my booting configuration.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm using a Toshiba Tecra Laptop through a dock station with attached keyboard, mouse and display. I mainly use windows but also practice with ubuntu. After update to 11.04 I cannot select which system starts with the external keyboard and I must open the laptop and use its keyboard only for this task, once started everything works as usual.
As a partial solution I've tried to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and force windows as default system. But on boot grub still shows Linux (the first line) as preferred system. Do you now what's wrong?
By the way, now I find a lot of files in /boot/grub. If I'm not wrong they weren't there with 10.10, do you know their purpose?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to dual boot with Win Xp and everything went fine with the installation untill I went to boot back into Windows. My keyboard fails to respond in the boot loader so I am stuck with the default setting of booting back into Linux. To be clear, the keyboard works when the BIOS loads, I can hit DEL and go to the BIOS menu, etc, it's only when I hit the boot loader. The keyboard also works fine in Linux and Windows.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI set up my Mac Mini to dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu. I started with Windows only, and allowed it to rewrite the partition table (GPT/MBR). When I tried to install Ubuntu, it didn't see Windows until I used Gdisk to delete the GPT portion. Then it recognized the Windows partition and installed Ubuntu as per normal. Now when I boot, I get GRUB and the option to boot Ubuntu or Windows 7. The only problem is that the USB keyboard (Aluminum or standard PC keyboard) doesn't work until an OS is loaded.
Is this an EFI problem? I'm starting to think that EFI is required for USB keyboard support at bootup since it replaces the BIOS functionality. Is this even remotely accurate? Did I mess things up by not going the rEFIt route? I'm not sure what I can do at this juncture as I can only boot into Ubuntu.
I could install OS X, rEFIt, then Windows and Ubuntu, keeping rEFIt as the boot loader, but if there's an easy solution I'd like to avoid that. More importantly, I'd like to understand what's going on.

My computer is currently dual boot: Windows 2000 on first hard drive (master) and Ubuntu 9.10 on the second hard drive (slave) using GRUB 2. Both drives are on the first IDE channel. I have a third drive with a DVD/CD drive on the second IDE channel (master and slave respectively). The only thing on this drive is my photo library, which is backed up on a server.If I were to temporarily remove the plug for the first two drives from the mother board and plug the third hard drive and DVD drive into the first IDE channel and install Windows XP on the third hard drive from the CD ROM, I would have a functioning Windows XP computer with just the hard drive and CD/DVD drive. The system would not know of the existence of the dual-boot configuration.
Now the question: Obviously, if I plug the drives back in the way they were originally, I will not have the choice on GRUB to boot into Windows XP on the third hard drive on the second IDE channel. When running from Ubuntu, can I do a GRUB update, and will it recognise the new Windows XP drive as a bootable option in the GRUB menu?I really don't want to take the chance of destroying my current dual-boot configuration (Win 2000/Ubuntu 9.10) by installing Windows XP on the third drive with the first two drives plugged in.I don't really want to take the time to experiment if there's no chance that GRUB will recognise the new Windows drive.I know. I remember use a old version of ubuntu with lilo (or was opensuse) but it works! but neither last ubunt nor mint with grub
