i have a usb mouse and keyboard and am testing booting without rhgb quiet on the previous kernel version. however the keyboard is not working at this point, which i only noticed just now.
View 2 RepliesI'm trying to get FC13 running on a Toshiba SG20 - no keyboard, no monitor. grub.conf and the entry KEYBOARDTYPE=pc and I think that's where it's hanging. Can I say KEYBOARDTYPE=none ? There is nothing, that I can find, even on the gnu-grub site as to options for KBT.
I can attach the drive to my desktop - has screen and keyboard - and the system boots fine. However when I boot on my desktop I get the blue screen with the FC13 logo - semi circle - looks like a top laying on it's side.
Computer: Toshiba Satellite Pro L510 laptop, 10.10.This has always happened but I have gotten around it by time-out and putting my menu.list in order. When I first boot the machine (switch on for the day from computer being off) I get to the grub options to select a kernel and I have no keyboard. No up/down arrows so have to go with the kernel on top of the list (not always desirable).
When I get to the log-in screen if I hit restart and go back to the grub screen I have a keyboard and can select any kernel. If I login to the kernel I have full keyboard, no problem. If I then restart, I have keyboard at the grub list.
Nutshell: It is only when starting the computer fresh that the keyboard is dead at grub menu (and then only). Any time after that, once the computer has been switched on, if I restart I have keyboard at grub menu and can select different kernels. (Of course, if I switch the computer off and back on again, no keyboard ...)
What file would I need to access to change what OS grub boots up to?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have fedora 12 installed on a laptop with an LVM partition, /dev/hda5 logiacal partion in the /dev/hda4 one, a boot partition on /dev/hda3 and a FAT on /dev/hda2 for win data. There was also a 10GB free partion left from older works on /dev/hda1. Now the /boot partition was set to only 0,2GB and this conflicts with the kernel updates. I freed the 10GB section, formatted it to ext 4 and copied all stuff from the /boot sector on it. now the old /boot is mounted in the grub.conf on a UUID and not the /dev/hda3 as it comes up on fdisk.
I would now like to swith the boot from the small /dev/hda1 partiotn to the larger /dev/hda3 one, but don't know how to manage it with grub (fedora, i understand it's grub-legacy).
i am trying to change the boot order on the GRUB menu so that the countdown automatically starts on an older kernel. From what i can see all the solutions on the web want me to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. The problem is that i don't have one. Someone also mentioned that if i don't have a menu.lst file then i should look for the grub.conf file. I don't have on of those either. The closest thing in /boot/grub is grub.cfg but that looks nothing like the descriptions i have heard of /boot/grub/menu.lst file

Now suddenly in F14, it was changed to a white bar, on white letters, which is hard to see and looks stupid besides. How do I change those colors back to the old way? the black bar on white lettering?

I recently installed a 64-bit version of centOS 5 alongside a 32-bit version, which I use. Turns out the 64-bit version absolutely will not boot and I'm stuck with it as my default boot option. Since the grub being used resides on the 64-bit half, I cant edit the menu file but I know theres a way to do this without it, through grub itself. I have about 29 render nodes now with this problem, and whenever they need to be rebooted I have to hook a monitor up to each one and hold its hand through the boot process. How to change the grub menu through grub itself, basically just change the default boot option and then have it stay that way?

I had installed 10.10 from a CD into a different partition (sda6), but that will not boot, so I have just deleted this and done another grub install and update. The kernel I am using has just been updated from 10.04 to 10.10 too, and it is this that I use and the Grub I have been working on (sda5).

sda1 = Win7 system (default install)
sda2 = Win7 Main (default install)
sda3 = swap

I tried to do my parents a favor by installing Ubuntu 9.10 alongside WinXP on their PC -- same configuration I have on my desktop at home. The install went fine, but since I made a poor buying decision on purchasing a MSI motherboard in the past, Ubuntu immediately crashes after boot (other MSI board users having the same issue, no help from MSI).
The computer tries to boot Ubuntu by default unless something else is selected from the boot menu. How do I change the boot preference from default (choice 0) to WinXP? I tried manually changing this (editing the grub.cfg file), but the file said not to edit, that it's generated by something else...How do I have WinXP load by default instead of the broken Ubuntu?
I have installed F14, and I stupidly put the keyboard as UK when installing. I now have UK keyboard layout every time I start up. So the @ and " are opposite to what my USA keyboard has printed on the keys. I can change it every time I log in, but how do I make it a permanent change?

I regularly update my ubuntu (10.04), and new minor versions keep accumulating on the GRUB screen. Right now I have 5 different versions listed on the GRUB, even though I always select the latest version to work with.
Am I supposed to do anything to get rid of the old version references? Do these old versions affect disk space/performance?

View 13 Replies View RelatedI recently compiled a new kernel (2.6.38.8) but it seems I forgot something. Right after grub, when the new kernel is selected (by using the keyboard), the keyboard stops working (it's on usb). When I select the old kernel everything is working nicely.
I actually used the config of the old kernel to configure the new one but excluded some modules before I finally compiled it. Now I'm asking myself which modul did I erroneously throw out?
Edit: A somewhat related question: Is there a log somewhere in the kernel source folder (or someplace else) which shows the kernel compilation process?
I tried looking this up. It seems that in Ubuntu, you need to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst. I tried that, and the file is not present in Debian "Squeeze". (Just trying it out on a different PC, In case you are confused by my other thread regarding Lenny) So what do I need to do to change the default OS to boot?

I'm extreemly new to Ubuntu and installed 10.04 onto a partition this morning. When I boot up my PC a menu called GRUB comes up and the list of OS's has ubuntu 1st. If I dont change my selection to vista it automatically boots into ubuntu. How can I change the order or default booting OS? I have seen other people talk about it but I'm not sure if it's up to date.
