Red Hat / Fedora :: GRUB Error 21 Loading Stage 1

Mar 27, 2010

My laptop is running Fedora 12. I installed BackTrack 4 onto an external USB hard drive using a LiveCD. Now when I boot my laptop. I get this: GRUB Loading stage1.5. GRUB loading, wait Error 21. I never touched anything with my internal drive. When I was reviewing what partitions the installer was going to format, the swap partition for my internal drive (Fedora) was set to be formatted even though I did not specify this. Fedora never used to show GRUB loading at all. Screen was blank until Fedora starting loading. Maybe this means that this is a copy of GRUB from my BackTrack disc? I ran 'fdisk' to look for anything suspicious and under /dev/sda1 (internal drive, boot partition) it says "Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary."

Ubuntu :: Grub Screen Hangs At Loading Stage 1.5 - Error 25

Jul 20, 2010

I started my laptop this morning with no problems. It was doing a file system check which I quit (pressing C) after about 30%. The only problem I had was wired networking didn't seem to be working (though wireless was). No problem: this happens sometimes and a restart fixes it. After restart: the GRUB screen hangs at "Loading stage 1.5" for ages before issuing Error 25. Try a restart. Same thing. And again. I'm on Lucid 10.4, no other OS installed, Toshiba laptop that up to now has had no problems with the last two versions of Ubuntu.

I installed opensuse 11.2 64bit on my external hard drive with the idea that this way the two OS would be completely seperate and I could just use suse when I felt like it. Everything boots fine for both OS when the hard driv is plugged in but when it is unplugged I can't get past a boot screen which says: Grub loading stage 1.5 Error 21 I have seen on another forum a fix using the windows install disk but I no longer have this. Is there some other fix I can use to make my laptop portable again.

I`ve looked on the web, and grub stage 1.5 seems to be where the size of the hard drive is identified. Problems often seem to be linked to partitioning. My hard drive has (since new) a 115GB and a 5GB partition.

When I try to access the 5GB partition, I get the following error message:

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Boot Into The OS - Error 25 GRUB Stage 1.5 ?

Jul 31, 2009

A few days ago I decided to ditch Windows for good. I read for hours about a Linux distro and settled on OpenSUSE.

I just need to say one thing. Linux is not for the feint of heart, and everywhere I turn (forums), I see computers riddled with error messages, frustrated people, and the list goes on.

I'm willing to work through this though since I feel that the benefits will outweigh anything that Microsoft can offer, so here goes.

Upon installing the new build of OpenSUSE, I encountered an error message that was fixed by hitting retry (I forgot the name, but I remember it being something like Etk3 or something of the sort).

My issue now is not being able to boot into the OS. I'm getting Error 25 from GRUB on stage 1.5

I've installed 11.1 over my Windows XP partition. I want XP no more. Additionally, I read the sticky and followed all the instructions. I also selected the KDE desktop (I still don't know the difference between that and GNOME despite Googling it several times).

General :: Grub Loading Stage 1.5 Error 21 Win7 / OpenSUSE

Jul 28, 2011

A few days ago I installed openSUSE 11.4 on a 1TB HP external hard drive. I have some very important files for school and personal work on my main hard drive, running windows 7, so I made sure the installation only affected my external hard drive. With the external hard drive plugged in it boots just fine but when it is un-plugged it says Grub loading stage 1.5. Error 21 and it won't do anything. This kind of pisses me off because there were no warnings and nothing was supposed to happen to my main hard drive. But this has already happened and now I want to know if there is any way I could fix it so I can boot windows 7 normally and still boot openSUSE with the external hard drive plugged in.

OpenSUSE Install :: "loading Stage 1.5 - Grub Error 21"

Aug 22, 2011

I just installed LXDE by pluging the P-ATA drive into my current PC (with my 2 S-ATA drives being plugged in). Not worked first time, probably because I pushed the drive too hard into the old PC. Formatted again, installed LXDE again (this time my S-ATA drives plugged out). Works fine with the old PC, but when I try booting from my current PC now it says: "Grub loading stage 1.5 ... Grub Error 21". No menu, nothing ... And because I plugged my S-ATA drives out, when installing LXDE the second time, the config file, grub is probably searching for on the P-ATA drive, is somewhere in nowhere. Googled it 2 hours ... Yast2 Bootloader and grub-install are just trolling me. The drive I installed LXDE (32-bit) on, is an old P-ATA, with first 30 GB, then suddenly 80 GB (don't ask, I don't know either. First formatting was 500 MB swap and the rest Ext4. Second formatting was 1011 MB swap and the rest Ext4.

Debian :: Lenny - Stage 1.5 Grub Loading ... Error 2 Due To The Bios "RAID" Configuration

Aug 4, 2010

I'm trying to install Debian Lenny on my new Dell XPS 8100 Desktop with 2 x 1To SATA HD. (No Windows or any other OS install is present on the system) The Bios allows me to change the SATA mode to either "ATA" or "RAID"

- When SATA mode is set to RAID, the installation goes without issues, but when it comes to load into the system, I've got that Stage 1.5 Grub Loading... Error 2 problem. I assume this is due to the Bios "RAID" configuration. I then switched the SATA mode to "ATA" in the Bios and now I can see the menu that allows me to boot my debian install but that part actually fails too saying "ALERT /dev/sda1 does not exist"

- When SATA mode was set to ATA, I tried to re-install the system but this time my drive was not recognized by the installer: "No common CD ROM drive"

Software :: System Freezes (Sometimes) At 'Grub Loading Stage 2'

Oct 16, 2009

I'm using Arch with the latest updates and I'm pretty sure this is a software problem.Basically about one out of five times my system freezes at "Grub Loading Stage 2". Whenever this happens, I usually just reset my box with the reset button and it will boot up just fine the next time.I originally put it down to being a defect in my hard drive which is probably three years old now at least. However, last week I bought a brand new 1.5TB drive. I removed my old drive and am using only my new one. Same problem.I Googled for this problem and found a bunch of posts with the same issue as I'm having, yet all of those issues are with people that dual boot with Windows. I don't. I only have Arch and no other OS on my system. I then tried reinstalling Grub and that doesn't seem to have solved it.I'm hoping someone can help me out with this. I hope it's not a hardware problem. Any help is VERY appreciated as this problem makes me worry that something worse is going on.

CentOS 5 :: Centos 5.2 Installed On /dev/hda3, Won't Boot, Cant Find Grub Stage 2?

Nov 10, 2009

I just upgraded by box from Fedora Core 9 to Centos 5.2. Finally!I have a 500GB SATA drive, it's partitioned into three equal size slices, hda1 through 3. The old Fedora was on hda1, I installed the new Centos on hda3. I instructed the installer to write the MBR to /dev/hda, not /dev/hda3. Fdisk says I have sector 0 unused.First, the system wouldn't boot - it just looped through the BIOS, rebooting over and over again. The BIOS sees the disk, but it never loaded Grub. I tried re-running grub-install /dev/hda, and not I get a Grub Error 17 after stage 1.5 loads.

I can boot from rescue OK, the grub.conf man menu.lst look fine, it's pointing to "root (hd0,2)". It's either the BIOS that can't find the MBR, or the MBR can't find Grub. When I looked at the disk with fdisk after the install, hda1 was still marked bootable, hda3 was not, so I swapped bootable flags but that has not made a difference. I also appended the new grub to the old grub thinking I could get the MBR (if it is there) to load the old grub and thence find the new Centos, but that didn't work either.Mobo is an old Shuttle AK35.Any ideas? Did I mess up by not telling the system to put the MBR on /dev/hda3? Is there a way to fix this without reinstalling?

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Error: Unknown Filesystem And Grub Error: No Such Disc

Nov 23, 2010

I have a dual boot system with ubuntu 9.10 x64 and Windows 7. Everything has been working fine for a a long time but yesterday I tried to delete an unused partition through the Disk Utility in ubuntu (System->Adminstration->Disk Utility) and everything was messed up. I used to get the "Grub error: Unknown filesystem". I managed to create an ubuntu bootable usb and followed some tutorials for fixing grub but all i managed to do is to get another error: "Grub error: No such disc". After some experimentation i got
"Grub stage 1.5" which gave me a grub> command prompt./dev/sda is the drive containing Windows and Ubuntu.

Debian :: Grub Load Error "Grub Loading Stage1.5. Grub Loading, Please Wait... Error 15"

May 23, 2010

When I try and boot my Debian computer I get the messages: Grub Loading stage1.5. Grub loading, please wait... Error 15 Is there any way of recovering from this - or is it simply a fresh install? I was attempting an upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze and despite a few hurdles it looked like it was all happening. Got the new kernel loading, and the new grub. It looked as though grub2 was working so I ran the grub-remove-legacy-support command (something like that) and now my computer won't boot grub or Linux.

I'm assuming the MBR on my harddrive is lost, however I don't know what state the partition is in. I'm guessing that maybe this has been lost as well. I tried a few tools from the Ultimate Boot CD but nothing here was able to re-install my grub or boot from any partition or even mount my file-system. I'm fearing the worst but would like it confirmed before I blow it all away with a new install.

Ubuntu :: Grub Messed Up - Error: Can't Find GRUB Drive For /sdd1

Jan 31, 2010

I've trawled the internet but can't seem to find the exact same issue, so I've made a new thread. So, I installed Ubuntu onto a 160gb drive. I have other drives in the system, but I disconnected them so that the system drive would be sda. Ubuntu installed perfectly with no issues whatsoever. I connected the other drives in the system, and again it booted up perfectly (although I can't remember whether the 160gb drive remained as sda or became sdd). Then I attached some extra drives temporarily to do some data shuffling.

This moved my system drive to become sdf. My computer booted fine multiple times like this, but when I was finished with the drives I rebooted and suddenly everything broke. For some reason my ubuntu installation showed up in the GRUB twice, and neither of them booted. So, I popped in the Live CD (which I'm using to type this post), and decided to update the grub. I chrooted into my system drive and ran update-grub, but it simply returned something like this:

during the installation, the installer detect the array 2 as sda and array 1 as sdb.. so i proceed with installation on array 2. after completed the installation, the first reboot lead me to a 'grub-rescue" prompt. by following the guide at url Mode, i've noticed that the boot folder has changed to (hd1,1), which i believe it has changed to sdb1. default root device shows that prefix=(hd0,1)/grub.

Fedora :: Can't Dual Booting With Grub (legacy) - Black Screen Grub Error 27

Jul 31, 2011

is it ever possible to do dual booting with grub(legacy) ever at all!. it is possible provided i take some pain, here is the link of that post [URL] i was coward and weak i didn't try that out then. but i did try it out. now so if u haven't seen the post .... I've installed Fedora 15 desktop(Gnome) with physical Logical volume called vg_fedora lv_root(ext4) ,lv_swap and lv_home(ext4), with 500MB /boot partition and had about 200GB free hard disk space ... so i wanted to install Scientific Linux 6.1 (because our school uses RHEL 6.1)

so, while running the installer I made (added) a logical volume lv_Scientific with ext4 FS and made its mount point (/) and used the MBR /boot which overwrote the Fedora /boot (completely OK and was as expected) i restarted after installation i got SL log in and as per the directions of the thread i copied the boot stanza from grub.conf of fedora 15 (which i already had copied and pasted into a text file and copied it from there)and pasted it into grub.conf of SL you may ask why did i choose same physical LVM too save swap space ... if i had made another physical LVM i had to make another swap ( i like LVM ... its cool)

completely unexpected happened Fedora now boots but not SL when grub starts i get this error 27 unrecognised commad and when i press <enter> i get grub menu with SL and fedora when i press on Fedora it works well i get my fedora login and i did login .. everything works fine but when i press SL it goes to the previous black screen grub error 27

Ubuntu :: GRUB Loading Error - Laptop Dead - Stuck At Error Message

Feb 21, 2010

I been running both OS's for a few months now with no major problems besides wireless internet issues. Today, however, as I go to boot my laptop up, the Dell logo loads with the F2 and F12 boot and setup options which both work. Directly after that though I get the message "GRUB loading. Symbol '?' not found. Aborted. Press any key to Exit." then it repeats when I push a key, and then it tells me to press F1 to retry, F2 to go to setup, or F5 to run diagnostics. It passes all the tests in diagnostics. I've tried booting off of the ubuntu cd I used to load it initially with no luck. So I'm stuck at either that error message or in setup but I can't go any further, and it does not change anything when I tried to boot from the cd.
