View 1 Replies View Relatedin Ubuntu 10.04 I have updated my system with command: sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and I see new kernel was installed. Now restart is required. I don't like to restart this computer, because it should be up and running as much time as possible. Is there any way I could only re-run some kind of kernel module or something like that instead of restarting whole computer?

I donno why but after several boots somehow GRUB gets corrupted or something so that when i restart the laptop, it displays "Grub 2 loading..." and restarts again. This seems to go on in an infinite loop, restarting the machine again and again trying to load grub.
When I re-install grub, everything is fine (I am able to see the Grub menu of ubuntu and windows and able to boot into both) .
I am using a Dell vostro 1320 .
I have a problem with real prayer, though it works fine, sometimes it stops. I cannot run the program without restarting my computer. I tried to re-download but its just the same.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Win XP SP2 installed on my machine. I wanted to try Ubuntu and i created a CD an and wanted to install the OS. The CD booted and i selected the option of "using The OS together and selecting which one to boot" or something similar to that. Ubuntu and changed MBR and installed itself. However on restarting I am getting Error 18. Now i am unable to use my computer at all.
In recover my XP at the moment and how to install Linux so that it does not mess around with any other OS?
I had Ubuntu installed on my old laptop in dualboot with windows. This year i bought a new Sony Vaio VPCS12M9E preinstalled with windows 7 pro, but i liked the idea of having the opportunity of chosing between windows and ubuntu, so i downloaded ubuntu 10.10 and burned the ISO-image to a disc, and restarted my laptop just as i did when i installed it on my old laptop. The problem is that when i boot the disc after restarting the computer, the screen just turns black. What can i do to install Ubuntu?

I don't think I've come across this problem yet, but I really wouldn't know. I do get the following lines on the screen with aptitude-gtk just about every day when I do squeeze updates and I wonder if it's not related to this same question. Does anyone know if aptitude-gtk is capable of asking you, the administrator, questions about a package that it's updating?

I am wanting to make traffic pass through my computer to another computer.
Here is my current network setup:

How can I make my computer ([10.1.1.3]) forward incoming traffic on port 25 to [192.168.56.101]?

But, like pretty much all of those same people, I do have access to local libraries. So, I would like to know the best way to download updates at a library, then come back and install them with ubuntu. The version is 10.04 32-bit, and is 100% stock (just installed from CD), and I want to bring it up-to-date.

I have custom compiled two previous kernels for maverick alone, so my .config it will load is optimized as I built with the localmodconfig option, and I have been using the 200 lines patch on my 2.6.35 kernels. I want to find the patch file that works on the 2.6.37 kernel for the 200 lines patch so I can optimize my speed, but the patch i found galbraith-patch is only for 2.6.36.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI tried, of course:
Code:
awk '/^./ {print}' FILE.TXT
That does not work, I just get an empty output, even if FILE.TXT contains lines which fit the desired regexp I've searched but did not found my way. I'd like to do it with awk, as I want my program to rely only on awk, nothing else such as sed, grep, etc.
I have no idea what is happening but I started getting a problem after some updates and then I decided to upgrade to 11.04 from 10.10 to see if this fixed the problem, then I just did a clean install last night and I'm still having problems. I'm always asleep when it happen or not around so I'm not sure what is happening right before this screen, but I can say I usually will only have VLC open (at this point I'm sure it stopped playing videos) and maybe Transmission in the background, nothing else. The computer won't respond to the Ctr+Alt+B+PrtScn or to the power button, or to Crt+Alt+F2 or the like, seems completely frozen...
View 9 Replies View RelatedI need a substitution of a particular string (StringA) with another string (StringB). However, there may be more than one occurrence of StringA within the file, but only one instance needs to be changed, which is why I'm trying to be sure of it's positioning against something I know will be unique in the file, and will always have the same distance from the string to be replaced. So, I intend to match on a string (StringC) above the string to be substituted and then have sed go to StringA below and replace with StringB.
So far, I have had some success with the following:

View 14 Replies View RelatedI recently updated my software (on Fedora 13) and after the updates had finished installing, it said that the computer required a restart. I noticed that I could no longer type anything into the search bar on Firefox without an error message appearing. So I thought it best to restart the computer then. When restarting, the loading screens took much longer than usual. The guitar pick shape that fills with white was stalling around the top. (I know, I love my complete comprehension of the problem too.) I pressed escape, and was given this message on a black screen.

This is as far as I can get. I press Esc again, and I see the completed fedora logo, but nothing else happens. I press Esc again, and I come back to the previous screen, and this time there are two of the above messages. My computer is fairly old (four years), so I understand if the hard drive is deteriorating. I would like to have use of my computer back, but at the very least I would like to recover some files that I have not backed up.
Trying to help brother whose computer quit working after he downloaded updates. Don't know Linux lingo but it looks to me like he has multiple flavors of Linux running: Gnome, ubuntu, xbuntu, kbuntu - probably more I've forgotten.
He knew nothing about computers at all and inherited a build-it-yourself computer kit that someone was throwing away. It came with a CD of Linux software. By trial and error he made it run and has managed to do some amazing things with photos and graphic design. But he downloads and launches EVERYTHING that suggests itself to him. Sometimes a thousand files at a time.
Now his machine boots but won't run any apps. It keeps giving him a message that he needs to "manually run" some "dpkg-something" but he doesn't know how to get to any sort of root or command prompt where he can enter a manual command. All he knows how to do is click icons. He's clicked them all. Now his computer is continually running screen after screen of programming language.
Is there any hope? Can we reinstall an OS without losing all of his files of graphics work? Which OS should he use on a fairly old and slow machine if his main (only?) use is graphic design?
I'm currently using ubuntu 9 for 4 years, then I decided to upgrade to ubuntu 10.4 then after wasting long hours of downloading updates and reinstall of new packages my computer request to restart the machine. after the boot sequence of grub my computer hangs up and no display at all, I tried to select different kernel but it won't help me at all what's the possible error after upgrading

View 2 Replies View RelatedI saw a reference to a way to do this while searching for help with something else but don't remember where it was now. I know it is possible to make a local repository but that seems more for someone with a home network composed entirely of Fedora machines than what I'm looking for.In Ubuntu I could just copy the contents of the /var/cache/apt/archives directory and paste the debs into the new installation to be installed once the update manager saw that there were updates. I looked through the contents of the /var/cache/yum directory but I didn't see anything that looked like it would allow me to do this in Fedora. All I want is a way to download whatever updates I need (and there are 300mbs of updates from a fresh install) one time to allow me to catchup and now be waiting hours on my slow 700k connection to download everything.
Could someone point me to an easy to follow HOWTO that would walk me through creating a service pack of the basic default applications for Fedora 13 that will need to be installed or updated on any system?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI dual-boot my machine and I want it to default to boot into windows so that whenever I restart the machine remotely from my home it will be able to get back into Windows (instead of Ubuntu).
The problem is that every time Ubuntu upgrades the kernel, I have to reset the default boot item of grub back to windows. This is because the grub menu loader uses positions i.e. 6 for default OS to boot. And when Ubuntu installs a new kernel it changes that order.
I am looking for a way to configure grub to remember its default boot item under kernel updates.

I am new to Ubuntu and I am running v10.10 through VMPlayer on Windows 7. I wanted to run the updates through the Update Manager. After downloading them and installing them, my VM rebooted and has not worked properly ever since.
When it boots now I get a screen which has my computer name "jason-virtual-machine" and its just frozen there. I tried the "recovery mode" but that does not boot up either.
What happened and what can I do to fix this?
I have been experiencing a problem where the screen loads and after initial first few lines breaks up into multiple repetitions of lines. Reloading helps but has to be repeated when pageing down. Mail is no problem; it is supplied by my network provider. OS is openSUSE 11.2 which I update when advised. Below is a sample from the error console:
