Ubuntu :: Formatted HD While Installing - Restore?

I have just installed my first Ubuntu. While installing it, I have checked the box "Install with other OS". The next step was to choose partition where to install Ubuntu. There I checked "whole partition", because I wanted Ubuntu on the same partition where my Win7 was, and I thought that it will save all the data because in previous step I checked that box. However, it didn't saved anything. My hard disk is formatted and I didn't saved any data Is there any way that I can restore my system to previous state, or at least to retrieve some data?

whilst installing knoppix 6.3 to my sda, i clicked use all drive and my sdb drive is showing no files in it? has it wiped them out?

There were some files residing on my ext3 file system, using Ubuntu as my linux distribution. Yesterday I formatted the hard drive using a windows install CD, rewriting it with a new NTFS partition. I'm willing to restore my personal files deleted due to this format.

I have some server files on my working Suse Linux 10.1 System. However, I'd like to add an 80gb Hard Drive to this system as hdb to backup some of the files on hda. My problem is that hdb is formatted with NTFS. Do I re-format to FAT32 or keep the NTFS format? Or what's the best thing to do?

While making sure that vmware used runlevel 5, I did not realize to simply check/uncheck radial buttons at bottom of frame because I first saw numbers across the top of the frame; checking, unchecking these seems to apply run levels to all services; since I may have disrupted default settings for some services, I am not sure I did this, but I may have done so before I saw what I should have done, two questions:
(1) Does it matter?
(2) How would I restore defaults with re-installing OS?

If I partition and install Ubuntu on part of my pc's hardrive, would the digital image factory-settings restore feature still be available? If so, and if used, would a factory restore use 100% of the hardrive and erase the Ubuntu install?

have an Intel Core2 Duo system that would dual boot via GRUB between Windows Vista and Fedora 10. I recently attempted to upgrade from Vista to Windows 7, however because the version of Vista I had would not upgrade to Windows7. This has removed the ability to boot into my Fedora 10 installation. After some brief research on the Internet, I created a Live CD of Fedora 12, and booted into that. Accessing the terminal I tried typing:

are there any sweeper / cleaner apps which can take back my installation as to when it was new. I know home directory could have config files etc..but that doesnt matter, i want all packages and applications reset to how it was when i had a clean install. I am using Natty

I have installed Windows 7 on my laptop . Now, it directly boot from Windows 7 . I think the MBR overwrote my grub . I have found two methods by google , but still does work .
1: boot from debian install CD, Alt +F2 switch to the console. "grub " "root (hd0,0)" "setup (hd0,0)".
2:boot from CD, mount /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1 /mnt ; chroot /mnt ; grub-install /dev/sda.

While trying to create a bootable SD to install Ubuntu on a netbook, I accidentally formatted a part of a removable HDD that was connected to my computer. If I remember correctly, the partition I formatted wasn't the main partition of the HDD. In that case, does it make sense that the whole disk was wiped out? On that HDD there's a year worth of work, I really need that back.
I was using PhotoRec with some luck: it started to recover files, but with no names, which is almost useless, considering a lot of it are recordings - useless without their names. Is there any good recovery program that will recover all my files incl. names? Is there a easier oprtion, considering that I think I didn't really format the big partition of the HDD? What may it have been, the small partition?

I have an external hard drive which has the mac os filesystem (hfs+) and it is read-only. I was trying things like 'sudo chmod 777 /path/to/my/drive' or 'sudo chmod -R u+w /path' but it wasn't working.
I just want to be able to have write permissions, anyone know how?

How can i detect if my disk is formatted as gpt or mbr?I suppose in principle this could be done by somehow reading a few bytes (no more than say 10K) from the beginning and possibly the end of the disk? But there surely is a program around that does exactly this, maybe some variation of or argument to fdisk or grub?

I would like to be able to read and write on hd formatted as Hfs+ not journaled...I know it is possible, but still I can't since ubuntu mount them with a different user: 99.If I add my user to the group 99 will be fine? or exist another way to write on such file system?if use hfs+ not journaled it will be less safe for the files?

I can't create any formatted partitions in my hdd (/dev/sda) with Gparted or KDE Partition Manager.
With either I can only create an unformatted partition. When trying to reformat it, I get this: [URL]

I did something to my Windows partition that seams to be unrecoverable,so I thought that I would get my hard drive re-formated. But, I want to store my OS image (I'm sure that thats the right term... I'm just gonna hop you lknow what I'm talking about) on a CD. I know programs that do this for windows but I don't know any that can do this for Linux/Ubuntu.

Dual booting Ubuntu and XP, I've been using ext2fsd for a long time.Recently I did a fresh install of Lucid. Now when I try to run ext2fsd from XP, it tells me that my ext3 partition needs to be formatted.I vaguely recall having had and solved this problem in the past, but I just can't find the solution.

So I currently have OSX and Windows 7 install on my hardrive - I would like to add 10.04 in the mix, however it will not let me resize my Windows partition because it does not recognize it as ntfs. It will not let me mount it via cli or gui and gparted will only offer to remove the partition - not resize.

I am using Ubuntu 10.04. I was having problems with bad sectors on a Sony memory stick--a couple of photos that we couldn't get off. So I installed testdisk and photorec and successfully got the photos off. That's the good news.
I decided I format the stick using testdisk. I unmounted it and formatted it (FAT) I don't know whether I re-mounted it, there was some message about rebooting.
In any event I now can't get the stick to show up *at all*, no matter what I do. testdisk doesn't seem to see it, it doesn't come up on my desktop when I plug the camera in. The camera doesn't recognize that it, my windows boxes don't see it either.

I just installed kubuntu 10.10, replacing an older installation. I have three hard drives one of which had all of the data I wanted to save, about 500gb. I repartitioned and formatted the other two drives and made sure that the data drive would be mounted but not formatted. When I booted into my new installation, the data drive was blank. I'm not sure if it's relevant, but I had just upgraded the file system from ext2 to ext4 before starting the installation.
I've been trying to recover my lost partition with testdisk. The website has instructions for recovering a formatted partition. It looks like it's working until the instructions tell me to choose Boot and RebuildBS, which I don't see as options. Can anyone give me any advice on how to recover? How did this even happen? Has anyone had a similar issue with installation?

I recently deleted winxp from my com and and decided to do a clean install of ubuntu. so i set the boot sequence and hdd boot importance to my flash drive with the ubuntu setup and folders in the usb. there are the apps for mounting the files on the it also from when i used it before using the linux universal usb installer, which worked before on my current com. but cmos cant boot from the drive and says error. is the usb installer at fault? and if not how do i install ubuntu on the formatted com?

I wanted to format my Flash USB drive !! and by mistake i choose my external Hard Drive (NTFS) and formated the drive gain to NTFS later when i released that this is not the USB flash drive it was too late to abort or do anything

I am new to ubuntu. I was on windows 7 32 bit, computer was running slow with viruses and full hard drive so i installed ubuntu 10.10 32 bit as i believe it to be more secure. Before installing Ubuntu OS I made a backup DVD-RW data disk, it had my brothers holiday pics when he went turkey and morroco. Once I installed ubuntu I needed a DVD-RW and quick formatted the wrong disk. Is it possible to recover the data? I've read somewhere that the data is possibly can be recover.

I formatted my sandisk 8gb sdhc card and partitioned it to 2gb partitions so that it would work in my cell phone well that didn't work so I tried to do it another way and I set some of it to empty 00x00 and now it obviously won't work and I cannot reformat and partition it back into an 8gb card with just the one partition. I tried all sorts of things to revert the dang thing but have not been able to get it to do anything but stay broken. I hope that I haven't ruined the thing and need to change it back to the way it was. Each time I have tried to change it back it just goes back to empty 00x00 and I tried to use windows as well to format the partition and it won't even recognize it at all.

Is there any way to make windows recognise my second hard drive (Which is fully exclusive to ubuntu) and access it? Iv'e been getting a few BSOD's since installing ubuntu and I'm pretty sure it's because windows keeps trying to access it and failing.
