I have some server files on my working Suse Linux 10.1 System. However, I'd like to add an 80gb Hard Drive to this system as hdb to backup some of the files on hda. My problem is that hdb is formatted with NTFS. Do I re-format to FAT32 or keep the NTFS format? Or what's the best thing to do?

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy colleague needed a backup for some of his loose media, so I assured him I could back it up on our Lab's Lacie 2TB external. His windows partition was incredibly sluggish, so he booted into ubuntu 11.04 and we partitioned and formatted an NTFS volume for him to transfer his stuff to. The format went fine, space was available, and I left him to transfer all of his stuff from his dell studio1555. He finished and reformatted his computer completely.
The NTFS is not recognizable by any of the OS now. Ubuntu sees it as a single partition without any data, whereas before the transfer, the partition map was clearly visible. Windows does not recognize the drive at all. OS X does recognize the partition, but it shows up as an apple_scratch volume, which is quite a bit frightening, considering a scratch volume is essentially blank. To elaborate, all of the files were in his windows partition, and were transferred within a relatively fresh install of ubuntu (not much had been done on it). The partition was made in diskutility in ubuntu (the GUI), but the rest of the drive was HFS+ formatted.
I accidentally formatted a drive that was ext4 to NTFS in Windows (using quick format only). I tried TestDisk, it does find a deleted partition but doesn't seem to find any files or be able to recover anything. Is there any way I can recover the files?

There were some files residing on my ext3 file system, using Ubuntu as my linux distribution. Yesterday I formatted the hard drive using a windows install CD, rewriting it with a new NTFS partition. I'm willing to restore my personal files deleted due to this format.

I have just installed my first Ubuntu. While installing it, I have checked the box "Install with other OS". The next step was to choose partition where to install Ubuntu. There I checked "whole partition", because I wanted Ubuntu on the same partition where my Win7 was, and I thought that it will save all the data because in previous step I checked that box. Prior to install, Windows Disk Management (whose output I was unable to paste into this question) showed that my disks were laid out as follows:

Disk 0 is a Seagate ATA drive, while Disk 1 is a Western Digital Ext HDD Usb Device. Looking back, I think I should have carved out a partition after M before installing Suse, but I was uncertain whether to make it a logical one or a primary, and in the past the installation has taken the 25 or so gig it needed from the last defined partition on disk 0. This time, however, it went after disk 1, and reformatted the entire drive, deleting about 300 gig of user data, including my system backup. What really suprised me is that it took up the entire drive: 2 gig for the swapfile, then a 20 gig partition, and all the rest for the third partition.
This is not what I would have expected. I especially would not have expected the installation to re-format user data. In any case, I did not want Suse on disk 1, so I reformatted the drive and then used my Partition Manager to rebuild the boot Mbr. So now, I am able to boot into windows, do not have Suse on my machine, but have lost critical data. My disks are now back to the way they were when I started (see above), except that drive F is now all free space, except for my latest backup. My question is how do I ensure, when I reinstall Suse, that it will choose disk0 for the installation and will not overlay any of the data that I have on that drive.
Is it possible to install rpms from SuSE 8.2 pro to run on SUSE 11.2 x86_64. I mean games and simple applications not system files.

I used to dual boot openSuse and XP but I yanked out my linux HDD and now my Windows will not boot, I get a GRUB error 22 (missing partition).This PC does not have a CDrom so I can not simply use the fixmbr from an XP recovery console.I have booted into opensuse Live CD (Flash Drive) and tried to use Yast but it gives me an error it can not write because of the partitioning. I also tried the recover shell but am totally lost trying to re-write GRUB because I can not find the menu.lst file.

Before posting, I read everything I could find here about partitioning in gparted (at least what I think applied to my situation). I'm pretty sure that this has an easy answer (or I hope it does).
I originally installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a USB stick to try and retrieve files from a failed NAS drive. That worked pretty well a very smart guy who posted instructions on how to do the hex editing necessary to realign and enter a reiserfs disk) so I decided I'd jump in and play with Ubuntu. I decided to port my USB install to an 80GB USB drive I had kicking around, but the install didn't actually take the whole disk the way I thought it would, it only took the 7.xGB from the USB drive.
I didn't notice (I know, dumb) and then I did the 11.04 upgrade to it. I'm trying to recapture the other 65GB of unused space via gparted, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to extend the original boot partition (I have no /home partition). i tried to format the unused space to ext4, but no matter what i do I can't expand that original partition (I can shrink it if that matters). Just to be clear, I booted from a live cd 10.10, and I'm running gparted on the unmounted USB drive. The boot partition should not be active.
My screen shots capability is not working correctly right now, but I'll post one if I can. I can only get a full screen shot, and this is on a 30" monitor.. I just want the active window the /dev/sdj1 partition is on the left (7.11GiB) witha boot flag, then the Ext/Swap at 377MiB each /dev/sdj2 and 5) and then another 68,85 GiB partition, currently formatted to Ext4 on the right labeled /dev/sdj3. No other partitions. I can extend the Ext/swap, but not the boot partition.

Can someone please give me a step-by-step that I might be able to follow. I have already tried to install Lenny with the desktop stuff and the system locks up. I have reinstalled this thing about 6 times and am about to give up and reload Solaris on this stupid machine and try to figure it out.
I recently had the HD replaced in my ipod after my old one failed. But now I can't get my computer to recognize it when I plug it in. Not sure what I'm missing or how to find the problem. I was using Firefox 3.6 on Suse 11.1, but I have just reinstalled my root partition and now have Firefox 3.0.4. Firefox immediately warned me to install 3.6. I have downloaded a tar.b2, but I have no idea how to install it. Is it possible to do it through Yast? If I need to use Konsole, please can I have instructions and also where I need to put it.
