OpenSUSE :: How To Restore Defaults With Re-installing OS?
Apr 2, 2011
While making sure that vmware used runlevel 5, I did not realize to simply check/uncheck radial buttons at bottom of frame because I first saw numbers across the top of the frame; checking, unchecking these seems to apply run levels to all services; since I may have disrupted default settings for some services, I am not sure I did this, but I may have done so before I saw what I should have done, two questions:
(1) Does it matter?
(2) How would I restore defaults with re-installing OS?

I installed the Elegant Gnome theme/package and I uninstalled it after about a week of use. Even after reverting back to the ambiance theme, or other themes, I've noticed that some elements of the Elegant Gnome theme have remained (e.g. the panel color and icons in Chrome or after right clicking and the system font). Is there a way to restore the Gnome defaults or Ubuntu system defaults so that everything is as it should be?

I just installed 11.4 on an old hard drive, probably with 11.3.
All works well, but I can't get the nice icons for user login in kdm.
Of course, I tried to change this in kde system config, but with no result. In fact what I do there do not change anything.
I suspect some sort of permission problem, but how can I simply reset all the global kde settings (The problem arise before login)

I have just installed my first Ubuntu. While installing it, I have checked the box "Install with other OS". The next step was to choose partition where to install Ubuntu. There I checked "whole partition", because I wanted Ubuntu on the same partition where my Win7 was, and I thought that it will save all the data because in previous step I checked that box. However, it didn't saved anything. My hard disk is formatted and I didn't saved any data Is there any way that I can restore my system to previous state, or at least to retrieve some data?

have an Intel Core2 Duo system that would dual boot via GRUB between Windows Vista and Fedora 10. I recently attempted to upgrade from Vista to Windows 7, however because the version of Vista I had would not upgrade to Windows7. This has removed the ability to boot into my Fedora 10 installation. After some brief research on the Internet, I created a Live CD of Fedora 12, and booted into that. Accessing the terminal I tried typing:
[liveuser@localhost ~]$ su root
[root@localhost liveuser]# grub
Probing devices to guess BIOS drives. This may take a long time.
GNU GRUB version 0.97 (640K lower / 3072K upper memory)
[ Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB
[code]....
Error 15: File not found
What is needed so I can restore GRUB on my system and boot into Fedora again?`

If I partition and install Ubuntu on part of my pc's hardrive, would the digital image factory-settings restore feature still be available? If so, and if used, would a factory restore use 100% of the hardrive and erase the Ubuntu install?

i am having a boot problem with opensuse.i installed a theme named suse-elegant under personal settings(configure desktop)-system administration-login screen.
i had also added vbox users(i ticked vboxusers) under yast-security and users-user and group management-edit-details to make virtual box work.
i want to check that installed theme so i restarted my laptop.after the restart opensuse taking too long time to boot
note:the login theme also not working.
after the boot i restored defaults in login screen themes.it is also not working.
i don't know which cause this problem(vboxusers or login theme).i am also seeing a root user has been added in my login area.i tried opensuse failsafe also.

Things were running fine until GNOME misbehaved;
GNOME failed to load telling me:
Install error, Configuration defaults for GNOME power manager have not been installed correctly.
So I
Code:
To the shell and check the logs in gdm and find this:
Could not ask power manager if user can suspend, launch helper exited with unknown return code 0.
So I try
Code:
To see if another user will get the desktop; I get the error
Cant create etc/passwd no space left on device.
So I
Code:
And get the following
I insert a usb drive to prepare for back up; Run
Code:
On the shell to get the usb device name; Then run
Code:
To mount the device.
I end up with:
Cant create lock file /etc/mtab~ 4610 No space left on device(use -n flag to override)
So, I
Code:
And see 9 partitionitions
Code:
Again to check which ones are loaded at boot up time and get
plus some other file systems mounted at boot up, but not mapping to any physical partitionition.
I try
Code:
On partition9 and get warnings because its mounted, so I chicken out and try
Code:
And run into the error:
cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4832 no space left on device (use -n flag to override)
Good thing is there is a
Code:
Since space is a problem, I
Code:
On partition6 which is not mounted at boot up time and try to
Code:
I still get the error
cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4735 no space left on device (use -n flag to override
Code:
For package update tells me
cant open /var/run/zypp.pid in mode w
Code:
For power management tells me its not even recognised as a command.

I have installed Windows 7 on my laptop . Now, it directly boot from Windows 7 . I think the MBR overwrote my grub . I have found two methods by google , but still does work .
1: boot from debian install CD, Alt +F2 switch to the console. "grub " "root (hd0,0)" "setup (hd0,0)".
2:boot from CD, mount /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1 /mnt ; chroot /mnt ; grub-install /dev/sda.

I just got a Firefox update from 3.6.17 to 3.6.18. Now I cannot view any Flash vids. I get the "Additional plugins are required to display all of the media on this page - Install Missing Plugins" message. I select the "Install Missing Plugins" button, select Adobe Flash Player, go through all of the steps, and receive "success!". And I get the "Additional plugins are required to display all of the media on this page - Install Missing Plugins" message. "What?" I exclaim, "I just installed it!" I have done this more than once. What is required to actually get functionality that I already had?

When i click the green frog head, things dont behave as before. When i moved my mouse from the Favorites to Applications or to Computer/Recently Used/Leave tabs, the desktop enviroment would automatically switch, without me having to click them. Another thing is if i want leave the green frog toolbar i have to click somewhere withing the green frog head window to close that window. Before i was able to get out of it by clicking on any window out of it, like a firefox window. Also when i go to desktop setup , the only themes remaining are Oxygen and Aya.There were more before. Finally similar programs on the taskbar are grouped together which i don't like. how i could over these problems without having to reinstall the OS , preferably using the opensuse dvd.

I am new to openSUSE (and to Linux). I have try Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora and ended with openSUSE that seems to be the one I like. But I have some problem now. The system seems to hang on boot and after searching the Internet I found thread about ATI display driver (and I have ATI) so I installed ATI drivers. The system got worse and playing videos start to be not as it should be (and often freezing). I decided to uninstall these drivers to get my system back as it was but ended with more problem. Now my system don't start. I can boot in some kind of command prompt but nothing else.
Can I do something to restore the system or will I have to reinstall the system? I don't know if I want to reinstall it. I am using a very slow Internet-connection (air-card) and I have had so much headache on the other Linux (before I did end on openSuSE). I like openSuSE (even there is some minor things, like I cannot change my default browser to Opera, a Browser I have been using for almost 10 years but I still can use the Opera so it is a minor thing).

It generally works fine - a couple of issues which I'm trying to get resolved elsewhere. My question is this: My laptop currently dual-boots Windows 7 and openSUSE, with openSUSE being the default. I have XP as a guest under VB. Is it possible for me to create a system image of the Windows 7 operating system, install W7 as a guest under Linux and then restore the backed-up OS so that I would have W7 as a guest (no more XP) but with the same configuration / apps as the original OS?In summary, this is wat I want to achieve:urrent:Dual-boot openSUSE 11.1 & Windows 7VBOx Guest = Windows XP Desired:Dual-boot openSUSE 11.1 & Windows 7VBox Guest = Windows 7 (identical config as the dual-boot version)

On the KDE desktop (openSuse 11.2), I clicked incorrectly an "Eliminate element" option, and the task bar is not present any more; I then selected "Add graphic elements", and the most similar widget to task bar I found is "Activity bar" (translated from Spanish). I selected it and I see a big button on the pannel labeled "Desk"... If I launch several applications, I cannot see them on the panel any more the task bar is not there..How can I restore it?how can elements be moved of position horizontally within the panel?

Only can access console. How can I restore kernel 2.6.34 and make my X work?

In the past month my root folder has become corrupted 3 times. General system restore doesn't help and installing the default kernel doesn't help. I don't expect a forum to be able to help with the corruption issus but is there any way to restore root without a complete re-install? It's a little time consuming.

After have the gui completly f***d up with an upgrade that messed up kde, I'm about to restore the original kde from the installation dvd (11.1) but there is no particular options to only restore kde, so I have concerns concerning some of those applications compiled and installed after the original installation (two years backward). I also updated the kernel to make things work with vmware...I don't want to loose time to recompile all the different stuff I need to work with linux.
Is there a way to be sure (by renaming /usr /bin /sbin for example) to keep the kernel alive (with libraries and headers) and all applications that were working very good before I did this update for kde (I won't do this again trust me)?The kde group never told me how restore kde from the original dvd so I'm a little disappointed because the system is working ok in run level 3.only kde is dead.I'll dig deeper before doing the reinstallation of suse 11.1...

I do regular full and incremental backups using dar. All disk volumes are labeled and mounted by label. There is no other operating system installed. I built a new system but due to having to RMA a disk, I built the openSUSE system on a disk from the backup cycle. This Maxstor disk has problems which is why it was moved into an external box and the backup system. I now have a replacement disk and wish to replace the Maxstor before it dies. I initially tried a disk to disk clone with clonezilla but this died complaining that a small target partition was smaller than the source partition. It had created the partition and the start and end sectors were identical. There are no problems with the new disk.
I decided that it would be a good opportunity to test a full system disk restore from the backups. I have in the past restored individual files and partitions but have never restored onto a bare boot disk. I have restored and labeled all 6 partitions. The partition containing / has been marked as active. /boot is included in the partition containing /. fstab is valid, menu.lst is valid, device.map needs editing but this is not a problem.
What do I need to do to make this disk bootable. I have looked through the GRUB documentation but if you try some standard GRUB commands in 11.3 you get messages saying don't do this use YAST. I have seen other suggestions ranging from trying to start the not supported system repair option to using dd to copy the MBR which seemed to trash the partitions in the users extended partition.
The YAST bootloader displays "boot from the root partition". I assume that this is currently what is happening rather than what YAST thinks might be a good idea for next time. I suspect that all I have to do is dd the first 512 bytes of the root partition. If this is the case I can add this to the backup process. While I automate backups I do not automate restores. Each restore tends to be different and I am not sure of the best way getting grub to work on a bare disk restore.
