i want to restore grub after installing xp my ubuntu version is 9.10 i had used this find /boot/grub/stage1 . with the previous versions but it didn't work with 9.10 what can i do ??
View 5 RepliesI have a WinXP computer with two internal hard drives that are partitioned. I would like to setup a dualbooting system. I first attempted to install PC-BSD 8.0 from a DVD onto an external 640 GB USB hard drive. Everything looked it was going to work (including the boot loader program) until after the installation. PC-BSD took out the NTFS of the hard drive (with over 500 GB of Window files). And the bootloader never loaded on startup. It took two days to get everything back. The files created on this external hard drive could not be read by another linux operating system (Slax 6.1.1). I would like to load PC-BSD on one of my empty partitions (from my second hard drive). The manual for PC-BSD states PC-BSD has to be installed on a primary drive and not a logical drive. If you attempt a logical drive installation, PC-BSD will wipe out the entire hard drive on installation. Would it help if I format a logical partition to the linux file system and then attempt to install PC-BSD to it? I can use Slax 6.1.1 from a CD to format the logical partition.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi currently am running windos 7 (64 bit) and would also like to install ubuntu on a second hard drive. i understand a dual boot is easy enough to do, but i'd like to install ubuntu so that it and windows are completely isolated. rather than be prompted with a boot screen to choose os, i would do so by changing hd boot priority in bios. i'd like the end result to be 2 separte computers in one box. can it be set up this way, and if so, how?

View 3 Replies View Relatedjust like most Linux distributions, will happily co-exist on a hard disk with just about any version of Windows. This is a concept known as dual-booting. Essentially, when you power up your PC you will be presented with a menu which provides the option to boot either Ubuntu Linux or Windows. Obviously you can only run one operating system at a time, but it is worth noting that the files on the Windows partition of your disk drive will be available to you from Ubuntu Linux regardless of whether your windows partition was formatted using NTFS. To day I have installed Latest Windows 7 and Latest Ubuntu 10.10 on my office system (Dual booting). This two operating system which I installed in HP dx 7200 micro towers.

i decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup,when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because,again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.
Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then,instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing,once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup,then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process,once i finished i continued to the next part,the installation,but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data,after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.
When it tried to boot,appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line,since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]
I'm trying to boot Ubuntu from a LiveCD in a computer I recently bought that currently has Windows XP on it. The Ubuntu menu comes up when I boot but it always snags on an error "failed to restore CRTC configuration -22" or something like that, and just goes on ad infinitum.
I tried running Linux Mint too and had the same problem, which makes me think it's an issue with the computer itself - which is an Averatec, if that helps.
I was experimenting with new splash screens in the plymouth manager when my ubuntu stopped loading into the gnome desktop. Ive tried to search for some solutions over the internet but i cant seem to find any. and to top it all of, the server from which i used to get updates from seems to have stopped running.i need help in changing my server via the terminal and to help restore my gdm.

But after i installed burg it just boots up straight into the Windows OS and Ubuntu is nowhere to be found. Is there a way to restore grub2 preferably without having to lose any files?
View 2 Replies View RelatedThere are way too many answers from archives on this so I decided to ask it again to maybe remove the confusion, for me and others. I had Vista and Ubuntu as dual boot, something ate my Vista doc settings folder (probably me). I want to reinstall it. It won't because of the set up in the grub I guess. I am not a serious Linux command line person but do follow directions well. Is there some somewhat easy way for me to restore my Vista?
I am aware of Win 7 etc. I have a Dell laptop so want to use the Dell restore CD. I am not alone in this. I run into people all over with a similar problem.
Here's the short version of what happened
--Had windows 7 and installed Ubuntu dual boot
--all was well but after some messing around with a failed Backtrack install I had to repartition some things to clean it up
--The partition where Backtrack was installed was corrupt so I deleted it and extended my Ubuntu partition.
--reload got the no such partition rescue grub
--read threw a bunch of forums and could only seem to find mostly threads on only being able to load Ubuntu and not Windows. Most having to do with post OS install problems and not re partitioning.
--I decided the best thread to follow was [url]
--after that my memory of events is a bit fuzzy, a lot was going on. In short I got a message in the terminal saying "this is a BAD idea" and something about another MBR. (sorry I cant be more specific)
--reading on I decided I would try my windows bootloader restore
--now windows loads up fine but it doesn't even give me an option to boot Ubuntu. I launched a live CD and checked GParted. The partition is still there.
Sorry if this is threaded somewhere already, I know that annoying. I'm just burnt out on combing forums and broke down and decided to ask directly
Edit: I have a Sony Vaio FJ170 laptop with Phoenix BIOS version R0060X6 & a broken DVD Drive. The BIOS doesn't support booting from USB (it does have 'External Drive Boot' option, but my USB stick doesn't get listed under boot devices in BIOS when connected to the laptop).
A few days ago I upgraded to Windows7, then installed Lucid through WUBI. With the help of another thread of mine (here), I changed the default boot option & timeout of Windows to zero to directly boot into Ubuntu. So far it was good. But recently I tried to get back to Windows for some reason but could not succeed as the F8 key no longer brings up the Window's Advance Boot Menu.
Is there another way to restore the dual boot menu timeout to get back to the Windows installation. Or even better, is there some way to make a fresh install of Windows & Ubuntu side-by-side without DVD drive. I am only 14 and absolutely new to Linux. The network booting methods given on the Internet were too complex for me to understand. I like Ubuntu but also need Windows for programming C++ & Photoshop CS4.
I have recently setup a dual boot system that consist of Windows Vista and Fedora 12, I am looking for a solution that will allow me to create an entire restore image for both OS's on an external hard drive. I am looking for something that is easy to use, stable, and free. I have looked at clonezilla and have used Norton ghost 2003 in the past which is not supported with Windows Vista.

I have been unable to successfully use any of the common fixes to reload the windows bootloaderWindows install has been unable to reload the windows bootloader. With the grub being primary I cannot access the factory restore partition.Is there a way to disable the grub and force the machine to the restore partition or use a recovery distro to run it? I have tried Knoppix but was unable to access the partition. I am still a linux wbie and understand I may be missing something simple but have yet to resolve the issue and need help. I need to reformat the machine and will run linux from an external usb. At this point all data is backed up and I am open for any options.
I have tried to access the MBR directly but fixing it is beyond my current skill level.Additional details: Initial linux install along-side XP was Mint 9. It completely wiped out the bootloader and failed to install properly. Installed Fedora and it reloaded the grub and fixed the bootloader which allowed the machine to boot and function with both OS's.
I have just installed my first Ubuntu. While installing it, I have checked the box "Install with other OS". The next step was to choose partition where to install Ubuntu. There I checked "whole partition", because I wanted Ubuntu on the same partition where my Win7 was, and I thought that it will save all the data because in previous step I checked that box. View 5 Replies View RelatedI currently have a dual boot system with XP and Ubuntu 10.04 32bit.I need to do a complete reinstall of the XP and am thinking that this would be a good time to transfer Ubuntu to a bigger drive and maybe install the 64bit version. My computer is a few years old but the Core Duo should be able to handle 64bit.
I am wondering though that since I have an old printer, scanner, web cam, etc. whether I would have problems with my system running 64bit. I am also concerned as to whether the software in the library would work properly (if they are not 64bit).There is no pressing reason for me to run 64bit except curiosity so if it will cause problems I can wait.
While making sure that vmware used runlevel 5, I did not realize to simply check/uncheck radial buttons at bottom of frame because I first saw numbers across the top of the frame; checking, unchecking these seems to apply run levels to all services; since I may have disrupted default settings for some services, I am not sure I did this, but I may have done so before I saw what I should have done, two questions:
(1) Does it matter?
(2) How would I restore defaults with re-installing OS?
Right now I have my hard drive partitioned, 1 with ubuntu 9.10 32 bit, and 1 blank. I was wondering if I could but a 64 bit windows 7 OS on the 2nd partition while the ubuntu partition was 32.
Better yet, is there a way to make my current ubuntu 64 bit?
I have an amd phenom ii x4 955 which is compatible with 64 bit OS but I accidentally used my old ubuntu disk with 32 bit on it.

I'm hoping to dual boot this (Windows 7) with Ubuntu. There are three partitions (sda1, sda2, and sda3) already created on the disk. I'm thinking of reformatting the sda3 drive to EXT4 and loading Ubuntu onto this drive. I'm not sure what's on sda1, but sda2 appears to have the windows 7 on it (though I'm not sure about that).
I am trying to dual boot xp and ubuntu 10.10 desktop. Everything in 32 bit. I have xp installed now and created a bootable usb with ubuntu and am trying it out now. i press install and then select my language. I then select install updates and third party software. I then get to a screen with 2 option erase disk and use that or specify partitions manually. I want the option that says install side by side, but it is not there.

Now, it doesn't give an option to boot into ubuntu at all... it boots straight into fedora.

I have windows7 installed on a single partition 500 gb hd. i want to install ubuntu as dual boot. (i have done this before but not with win7.) can i go into disk management and reduce the win 7 volume by say 50 gb. format it fat32 and install ubuntu. and still have dual-boot? thanks in advance. i plan on using either ubuntu 9.04 or 9.10.

Just sucessfully installed a sual boot with 11.2/ubuntu 10.4. 11.2 was installed first, than ubuntu. ubuntu recognizes and displays 11.2 on its bootloader, 1..2 does ot show ubuntu on its boot menu. so this mean I have to edit menu.lst and physically add the menu entry (root, load the kenel, and load initrd)....correct?
