I get this error ALL THE TIME after a reboot if I try to print. Going to the printing applet to add the printer does no good because Lucid is not connected to the CUPS server. I found that the work-around below fixes the issue for the current session.

cups does not start with the server. When I try to start from the terminal I get the error message
cupsd: Unable to read configuration file '/etc/cups/cupsd.conf' - exiting!
cupsd: Child exited with status 1!
The log files show nothing. cupsd.conf exists. It is user - root and group - root with permissions set at 0644.
My interpretation of this is that the program is not launching from either boot or terminal for a fundamental reason. I do not quite see what that reason is .
I googled this, to no avail. I've restarted cups, to no avail.This is a Networked Printer, but i have little doubt that can be ruled out as an issue.If i want to print an Image or Plain Text file, i get this error; if i print with OpenOffice, i do NOT get this error and it prints fine.I have also gotten a similar error, like "permission denied" or something, but i cannot recall exactly what it said, and cannot seem to recreate it at the moment.I have been getting this for quite some time now (months), but never found out why. View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a desktop that has a d-link DWL-520 wireless card, which was working under Windoze. Today I installed Centos 5.4 on the system , which went cleanly. I then used Network Configuration to set up the wireless card. I specified to use DHCP, set the SSID and authentication password. When I tried to activate the card I get these error messages

The hardware manager seems to have correctly identified the card and chipset, (Intersil Prism 2.5) and installed driver hostap_pci which came with the distro. This web site seems to suggest that this is the correct driver: [URL] searching forums I've found a few references to these errors, but they were from several years ago, and for different distros and cards. I did find a reference to using Network Manager to configure the card instead of Network Configuration. I started the NM service and configured a connection using it instead, but still no luck.

I am probably going to get blasted for this statement which is a result of four days of frustration.There are many people on here who are having problems getting their printers to work with Ubuntu. In my case it is version 10:04. I have been reading and trying fixes for four days. Nothing works.Surely this has got to the attention of the people who know what they are doing and design these programs. I sure don't know how to fix this, along with a lot of other users. We are not being lazy or arrogant. Nothing seems to work.Surely someone in the hierarchy can put in a patch that fixes this problem.The fact that Ubuntu won't print for so many people surely must be a priority inhe development of this software. So, please will one of the program developers fix this problem and send out a patch.

I just recently bought a WinStar USB LPR Network Print Server so that I could connect my printer to my network so all the machines on my network could print, and everything would be OS independent. The problem I'm having is that I can't get CUPS to connect to the printer. It either never prints anything, saying that the printer is not connected, or saying that LPR is spooling the job, but it never completes. I've been configuring it as a network printer in CUPS, and trying all the different configuration options to no avail. The print server is located on http://192.168.1.103 and is pingable. The print server I have is this one:

CUPS is stopped in the system and the system is configured as samba server. What could be the reason for these printing requests from smbd?
I am trying to setup an HPC4400 printer attached to a Windows XP box on a Fedora-11 box with the latest updates and am getting the error " Cups server error Client-error-not-possible ". Using the Cups GUI on the fedora-11 box I can find the printer, I get verify that the shared printer exists but still get the message when I try to install it.

Since I've been using Linux (SimplyMepis, then Arch) on my desktop, I'm really happy that I found a Linux distro which suits me the best. BTW, I have a Toshiba T130-10g which I love for its long battery life. However, I would like to solve some issues/dilemmas/questions (and I searched for s the solutions of some of them on Google so please don't tell me to use it...)
1) How do I turn off Wifi completely in a comfortable way? I tried sudo iwconfig wlan0 txpower off but it threw: Error for wireless request "Set Tx Power" (8B26): SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported. I even edited something in interfaces configuration file, but it did nothing. Oh, I forgot, my notebook doesn't have a hardware switch to turn off wifi.
2) Setting brightness doesnt work for my laptop. I can set it by udo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=25 but I'm looking for a more comfortable solution. BTW, editing one GRUB configuration file didn't help and ended in booting into command line (it was something with adding backlight=vendor or something like that...)
3) My touchpad is sometimes too sensitive and clicks somewhere sometimes when I don't want to it. How to make clicks less sensitive? I tried to play with some mouse settings but it didn't help much but perhaps I'm setting a bad parameter.
4) I remember that back in KDE 3.5 times a network manager icon had a setting to switch on net statistics so I could very easily see how much I downloaded every day. But, since KDE 3.5 is not supported anymore, I stopped using it in refusal to update to KDE 4.XX and switched to GNOME. Since for some months I'll have a limited download connection, is there something esay in GNOME to watch my net statistics that wouldn't be deleted after reboot/shutdown?...
I'm having a problem trying to set up my HP OfficeJet 6310 printer with Fedora 12. This is with a clean install, SELinux disabled and Seems to be some issue specific to Fedora, as I've used the same setup with the same hardware without problems in other distributions. I have installed all the HP files I believe should be installed. Anyway, my printer is on my wireless network. I can see the printer on the network, as is the case with my other computers.
I followed the standard setup I use with any other distro....open a terminal and enter "hp-setup." The HP Setup utility opens and I go through the standard procedure of choosing /Network/Ethernet" as my means of connecting. Moving on, the HP OfficeJet 6310 is found without a problem. When I attempt to "Add Printer," however, I am then getting an error. The error shows, "Printer Queue Setup Failed. Restart CUPS and try again." Looking at [URL], I get to CUPS but can get nothing there so far as a printer goes.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have installed lamp server on a computer i have for website development. i use the latest ubuntu server 9.10, apache, php, mySql, Webmin - all the latest versions. it has been running very smoothly for a while now, accessing both from internal network as well as from outside.my problem is very strange - whenever i connect using ftp client to my server from outside, to do a "massive" file operation like uploading a big number of files or deleting an entire directory, my computer/server "crashes" and i lose connection to it for a few minutes. i cannot access it via ftp, not ssh, and neither of the website installed on it run (http). i just have to wait about 10 minutes for the server to come back again.Like i said - it only happen when accessed from the outside (internet). if i do the same operation from a local computer (the same network) no problem there.

I am currently trying to upgrade over 100 rpms on multiple Red Hat servers. Whenever I try to do a rpm -u /packages/*.rpm i recieve a failed dependencies error on the very first rpm. I know that I can go though each rpm one by one and trace each dependency but that will take forever. Is there a way to skip these errors? I know the -nodeps command for rpm but I dont want to screw something up but running all of these rpms on -nodeps
View 10 Replies View RelatedI have been able (with some hair pulling and gnashing of teeth) to print from outside the LAN to the printer connected via USB to the desktop computer at home, until the last upgrade. The laptop will forst say the printer may not be connected, but eventually (usually) after a while says the job was sent to the printer. The log files on the desktop - serving as the printer server have an error message in cups/error_log that I am not familiar with, and don't believe I have seen before. I am sure if I could decipher that error and figure out how to change the behavior to get rid of it, it would once again work. Printing from within the LAN is a no-brainer as it has been for the last several releases. The error that I get when trying to print outside the LAN (via the internet) is:

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala, and I am having problems with GDB.
