I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 I got last week. I had Win7 preinstalled and I wanted Ubuntu for university so I installed that too. I came out of Ubuntu after installing it and went into Windows for something. I shut down but the next morning - ever since I power up the laptop - I get this message saying "Module name not found. Aborted. Press any key to exit". Dell tech support were unaware of this problem previously but they have offered to come round and put the pc back to factory settings. Do you think this is the only way I can go forward from this?
View 1 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 9.10 was set up to handle the booting selection - previously I thought it was xp but Ubuntu 9.10 "did" it. The system started out as a xp / ubuntu 9.10 dual boot on a 400gb drive. xp has 210gb, ub has 80 and their is a 100gb shared storage. Xp was installed first and then I followed a guide over at linuxconfig.org to get ub installed so that I could select which OS was wanted at boot. Ubuntu manages the boot up menu (Went back to look at my notes from the original setup) The owner tried to update to ub 11.04 and afterall was said and done the machine now boots to the message

I think the xp install is okay but I can't say for certain as I don't know how to boot it outside the bootmanager at startup. Data has been saved so if I have to blow it all away and start over I can but I'm hoping I won't have to.
I had a windows 7 professional on my computer. I tried dual booting it with ubuntu. While installing ubuntu when it asks which partition you want to install it "as it said your all data in the partition would be erased but not before you confirm" so I selected go back and aborted installation because I didn't wanted that and bang I start my system again an I get this error "no boot device found". I ran my hard disk test it say's passed so I don't think my hard disk is corrupted. I tried using windows 7 recovery disc but I guess it doesn't even detects a operating system on my laptop. I got no back up of my data. Any way to get back my data if I cant get windows back!
View 8 Replies View RelatedRecently I've installed Open Suse 11.3 along with Ubuntu 9.10 on my PC ( made it a dual-boot OS ). This morning while logged in, in Open Suse 11.3, found out that there were important update for kernel in Yast. So, did the update and then required to restart the PC. In the Grub/boot menu, I chose to log-in to Open Suse 11.3, but after a while it returned with " Error 15, file not found ". Luckily I was able to log-in in Ubuntu 9.10. Assumed that Error 15 is always related to misplaced or wrong configuration of Grub in the partition, I did several searching via Google, and found this possible solution HowTo Boot into openSUSE when it won't Boot from the Grub Code on the Hard Drive . So I tried the " Broken Grub menu: boot to the menu, drop to a console and boot openSUSE direct " method. But rightly after the " find /boot/grub/menu.lst " command as instructed in the solution, it returned with ( hd0,0 ) and ( hd0,4 ). Why there are 2 bootloader in the Grub ? Which bootloader should I choose ? And for convenience, here is my " menu.lst " folder that I get via Terminal in Ubuntu 9.10 :

I installed ndiswrapper and tried adding a driver. Error: module ndiswrapper not found.So I recompiled my kernel, upgrading to 2.6.33.4 (no, I can't see the logical connection either) After a week, I got the new kernel working ( in the interim I reinstalled debian- it didn't survive my first kernel attempt. don't ask), and reinstalled ndiswrapper. Same problem. So I had a stoke of genius: download the source package!! So I did. Lo and behold, a new directory appeared in /usr/src/ : modules. I took a moment to admire my work, then I jumped in.I 'ls'ed to see what was going on, and found a Makefile. so I typed 'make'. First error: kernel source not found. So I entered the Makefile, found the(clearly marked)variable,and changed it to /usr/src/linux-2.6.33.4 , exited, and redid 'make' Second error: no wireless support in kernel. So I went to src/linux-2.6.33.4 and did a make menuconfig- loaded my current, threw in wireless, and exited.

while booting with bootsplash turned off there's a message "FATAL: Module ata_piix not found FATAL: Error running install command for ata_piix" .Though everything works fine i'd like to know what does this message mean and is there a way to disable loading of ata_piix whatever it means.

Unfortunately when I try to install my Okidata ML320, cups it's not showing any parallel ports. I try to update all the system with last patches and packages :I tested the card on a pc with windows xp, installed my printer and it works perfectly.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI currently have Windows 7 installed. I wish to dual boot this with Ubuntu 10.4. On a 120gb drive I allocated a large percentage to Windows and have put two partitions on the end; 1gb for swap, 15gb for Ubuntu. However, when I go to install and get to the partition manager bit it claims no operating systems have been found. Contrary to this, when I boot into the live CD it sees all the partitions, however these cannot be accessed and no error messages are displayed (However, accessing the Windows partition appeared to corrupt the install and I had to format...). When running install from the live environment the same no operating systems found error occurs. Windows 7 works fine and the drive is IDE (if this makes any difference).

I think the problem is in the command perl Makefile.PL --with-apache2-apxs=/path/to/apache2/bin/apxs in section .../path/to/apache2/bin/apxs . What does mean ./path/to/apache2/bin/apxs? Maybe I should write the path to apache2 which contains a file named apxs? I did not find such file apxs. My apache2 path is /etc/apache2, but there is no file named apxs... Today I installed suse 11.1 on my computer. After some time i was able to connect to the internet and the auto update program prompted for updates. after the updates were installed more updates were prompted. but now i get an error when i try to install them. edit: the error is "PackageKit Error internal-error: Installation aborted by user " if i try it manually i get an message "access denied to ......" how can i make my system update normal?
View 8 Replies View RelatedRebuilt an old box of mine and changed up the drives. Did not think it was an issue as I was formatting the drives and reinstalling the systems. I installed XP first. Then PCLOS. After PCLOS was installed XP would not boot and gave me an error saying the BOOTMGR was not found and to restart. I figured that I just had to map the drives as XP was installed on HD1 and not HD0. But no changes I made to the GRUB configuration seemed to work.I have run a script to get all the information you guys will need already. Let me know what I am missing here

before 2 days i was trying to update my opensuse 11.1 with 1 kernel update. Due to slow connection it was automatically aorted. i tried twice for updation but it failed each time in between. When i restarted computer i have been getting following message on booting:-

I have a (slightly complicated) dual/multi boot system.
I keep getting boot errors (when choosing ubuntu from the grub2 menu)

Serious errors were found while checking the disk drive for /boot
If I switch off and restart, ubuntu will then start without issue.
My setup is like this ....3 disks, one with 10.10 clean install - so Grub2, separate partitions for /, /boot and /home, one with windows 7, one with windows XP and 10.04 wubi (this is my old disk which I will trash once I'm happy with my upgrade to 10.10 & 7 on separate disks.
I installed 7 and 10.10 with ONLY their disks installed. After both were working, I added all disks and rejigged the grub2 menu (using update-grub and StartUp-Manager).
This problem only seems to occur if my previous boot was not 10.10 ( I will investigate this further). It's as if something (grub2 ?, the bios ?) is remembering part of the previous boot and not using the grub2 menu completely.
I have a dual boot laptop with OpenSUSE and Ubuntu. The boot loader used is Ubuntus Grub that came with the Ubuntu installation.
I have done a zypper dup and upgraded to OpenSUSE 11.4. When I reboot my system I can no longer boot into OpenSUSE, Grub says something about a missing kernel.
I think I understand whats wrong here; the OpenSUSE entry in Grubs table hasn't been updated with the changes brought in by the zypper dup (new kernel i guess).
I'm I correct to assume this? How do I fix the problem? Booting into Ubuntu I tried to find /boot/grub/menu.lst to examine it by I cannot find it. I know Ubuntu use a newer version of Grub, does it have a different file layout?
I previously had a machine that dual booted Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit. I recently attempted to wipe out the 32 bit Ubuntu and install 64 bit Ubuntu.
Here what I did:
- I booted from the LiveCD, and had no problems
- I formatted /sda3 using gparted. I checked that Ubuntu resided on /sda3 via the command "sudo fdisk -l". This worked fine.
- I then clicked the "install ubuntu" option on the desktop, and chose the largest chunk of free space.
- About 15% through the install, I was told the CD could not be read from due to a potential scratch or issue. I then tried to revert back to the Os running from the LiveCD, and things went crazy. I had trouble shutting down the machine and did a hard reset.
Now, whenever I boot I am greeted with the following message:
Windows Deployment Services: PXE boot aborted
error: no such partition
grub rescue>
At the grub rescue prompt when I ls, I see:
(hd0) (hd0,4) (hd0,2) (hd0,1)
I can still boot the LiveCD. I tried that again and tried to again format sda3 using gparted but had no luck fixing the issue. When booting from the LiveCD I am also told by gparted that "sda1 does not coincide with a cylinder boundary" or something of that nature.
I have a netbook running Windows XP as standard. There is also a recovery partition which came from the factory.
In the past I installed Ubuntu (I think 9.something) from USB key and all worked fine. However my XP became corrupted and I needed to do a repair on it. After this, Ubuntu became removed from the boot select menu.
Since then, Ubuntu has become updated to 10.04, which I now cannot install.
The Live CD tells me there is a "file IO error" and simply stops installation at around 70%.
I did manage to get into Ubuntu from a Live USB using Wubi. However when I chose to install Ubuntu to a Harddrive, the option to "install side by side" was missing.
After reading on the forums, I did a chkdsk /f on Windows and tried again. Now my liveUSB does not show a boot menu!
When I select to boot from USB stick, the screen goes blank with a flashing cursor. Ctrl+alt+dlt reboots.
I'm really lost here! It seems when I fix one problem, another problem arises!
Also when trying to instal Ubuntu within Windows, the process goes through to 100% and asks me to reboot. When I do so, the option for Ubuntu does show in the boot menu. However when I select it, I get an error "Windows boot failed: file wubildr.mbr and status: 0xc00000f - something is corrupt".

Got this error when I tried hash checking, was downloading the file using rtorrent when there was a sudden powercut and my system shutdown abruptly, tried restarting the torrent and kept encountering problems while restarting.
I am using Redhat linux 5 version 2.6.18-164.e15 with platform i686. I need to add ntfs module. I execute following command

but it say FATAL: Module ntfs is not found.
When I try to load the Realtek 8187 modules to kernel using the ./wlan1up command, I get the following error:

i decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup,when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because,again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.
Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then,instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing,once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup,then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process,once i finished i continued to the next part,the installation,but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data,after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.
When it tried to boot,appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line,since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. I've been unable to boot into x using the real-time kernel from CCRMA at home. I get the error "Failed to load module "nvidia" (module-specific error,0) no drivers available. I'm using the driver from Nvidia. I know that this is not an official Fedora kernel and I should be bothering CCRMA about this, but in the mean time could I edit the entry in grub.conf so that it will use the Nouveau driver for that kernel only? That way I could "dual-boot", and just use the rt kernel when I want to use audio software and don't need 3d graphics.

Use the Up and Down keys to select which entry is highlighted press enter to boot selected OS, "e" to edit the commands before booting, or c for command line.
Before it was not like this. How can I fix it for smooth running.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an HP Pavilion DV 6500 laptop running Windows 7 and Ubuntu (via Wubi). I just updated Ubuntu to 10.10 from 10.04. After restoring the Windows bootloader (which I need to do every time Grub gets updated), I can no longer boot up Ubuntu. When I select it from the bootloader, it gives me a couple of errors, the final one being: Error: File not found And then reboots the system automatically.
