Ubuntu Installation :: Update Manager Aborted 10.04 Upgrade

Dec 31, 2010

Ubuntu Studio (no idea what version, no idea how to find out) Update Manager has been saying 10.04 is ready for quite some time, but I cannot install the upgrade. The first time, more than a month ago, it had problems with Java and aborted. This time it couldn't find a repository in NZ so it threw up its (virtual) hands and gave up. Should I even try to upgrade? I keep installing maintenance and security updates (except Adobe Flash Player which Adobe cannot identify). It does most of what I want it to do. Does 10.04 (or 10.10) really matter? Assuming I try for US 10.04 LTS again, how do I get it past its problems?

Ubuntu :: Open Office Broken After Aborted Update To 10.xx?

May 26, 2010

I have a user who rather stupidly attempted to upgrade his Jaunty to 10.04 - half way thru, he got fed up and rebooted. I managed to get his machine to boot up with most apps working except OOfice. He gets an error OpenOffice.org 3.1 Fatal Error - the application cannot be started. The component manager is not avaiable. How can I solve this? I've tried to re-install / upgrade to 10.04 using an install dvd but I don't want to remove all the settings which it seems to want to do . It wants to either install 'side by side' or 'erase and use all the disk'. I would be happy to upgrade assuming it fixes the openoffice problem.
Alternatively, how can I repair the openoffice problem?

OpenSUSE Install :: BIOS With A Boot Manager - Update Or Install?

Jan 7, 2010

I had my motherboard fail and had to do a replacement. The motherboard I got has a feature (I don't think I can shut off) that lets you select what drive you want to boot off of. I have XP installed on the first drive and openSUSE 11.1 on the second drive. I am running openSUSE 11.2 with KDE 3.5 and I simply dropped my drives onto this new motherboard. I can boot up (Linux) just fine but am having other issues with my mouse. I am thinking of Updating to openSUSE 11.2 and the current KDE version.

Should I just update to 11.2 or do a new install. I have LOTS of data in my home directory I really don't want to lose and have a partition for data as well that is pretty full. I don't want to lose this stuff. What should I do about Grub with this BIOS that lets you pick which drive to boot off of? Put Grub in the MBR of the drive with openSUSE on it and nuke the MBR of the XP drive?

OpenSUSE Install :: Will Not Boot After Update?

Jan 5, 2010

After todays kernel update openSUSE 11.2 will not boot I have both Ubuntu 9.10 and openSUSE 11.2 dual booting and since I installed Ubuntu first, it is using the Ubuntu GRUB as my boot menu. After todays kernel update, when I select openSUSE 11.2 from the GRUB menu I get Error, you must open kernel first: Press any key to continue... Pressing a key reboots the machine. I'm thinking that the update did not update the GRUB menu from Ubuntu to open the new version kernel. How can I manually edit it or get GRUB to scan for the new kernel so openSUSE will boot?

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Boot Following Update

Sep 18, 2010

I just finished installing openSUSE 11.3 off the (downloaded) DVD. All was good. Then the Online Update recommended a huge swathe of patches and I accepted them. Now when I try to reboot, it gets as far as started to display (fade in) the main window, and then freezes - mouse and keyboard are dead.

Rebooted several times - same problem every time.I can boot to the console if I so choose from the Menu on the login screen.I guess some part of the update is bad. any idea how I can find out which part and fix it?

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Boot, Can't Update?

Mar 18, 2011

I have upgraded from SuSE version 11.3 (which worked well) using zypper dup. Unfortunately, an earlier post regarding resolution of a CPU crash during boot turned out to be premature, as it is now intermittent. When booting, the system: (1) UDV reports a CPU crash (on-screen dump)(2) if the computer is reset (turned off, then on again), it will eventually either boot up normally (rare) or display a screen with a very wrong resolution setting. Repeatedly rebooting will eventually tease the system into normal operation, but it usually takes several attempts. Several Grub parameters have been tried but don't seem to make any difference. The display adapter is an Intel 845G for which a /etc/dhcpd.conf file has been configured.

(3) Once operating, the system cannot update, either using zypper up or the Gnome GUI update manager. Running zypper update from root yields:GLib-GIO:ERROR:gdbusconnection.c:2279:initable_init: assertion failed: (connection->initialization_error == NULL). After several such messages, the update proceeds, but locks up with: Retrieving: timezone-2011b_2011c-1.2.1_0.3.1.i586.delta.rpm [0% (0 B/s)]Interestingly, the download of timezone data often continues up to 74%, then stalls. Initially, the timezone file begins to download, but stops at 74%. The B/s then counts down to zero. The download attempt will time out, then continue to retry until manually aborted. The GLib error can be supressed with su - root, but update still fails with the timezone download.

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Boot After Online Update Option?

Dec 17, 2010

I've installed opensuse 11.3 on my computer (well actually Ive done it twice, once with full DVD image and once with network install). Everything was OK until Ive made update (yast/software/online update <-- BTW kupdate applet isn't working, just update bar appear and stuck on 0%). i haven't installed any additional packages, only the defaults (KDE desktop). after update only fail safe option is working (booting normally and looks like normal desktop, no visual differences between normal and fail safe booting, if there should been any). When I've tried to find solution for this problem, very ofter answers were -> graphic drivers problem (im using ati hd 4670 AGP <-- yea, AGP . well when i start normal boot green screen with lizard logo appear, then screen goes black for a second or two, then the green screen come again, and after another few second screen goes black permanently with working hdd for 30-40 second (hdd led blinking) BTW i have windows7 pro (booting fine) on this machine too, it was installed as first system on hd0,0. opensuse was installed on stand alone PATA disk (secondary EIDE master, ODD on slave). how to gather info which u all need to get this problem more detailed. OpenSUSE Install :: Xorg Update - Boot Into Run Level 3 Stops

Jun 8, 2011

There was an xorg update that I did today (June 8) and when try to boot into runlevel 3, it stops when it gets to starting up sntp. I also saw that it said DHCP client not running. When I try again (push the power button) and allow it to do what it wants, everything seems to start up just fine. I'm asking about this because I need to re-install my NVIDIA graphics card driver. For the boot options, I've tried clearing the text (I don't remember what they are at the moment) and typing:

Code:
nomodeset 3
and when that failed, I've tried it as
Code:
nomodeset3
but still get stuck at the same spot. I've also tried it without clearing the text but still it gets stuck.

How can I get to runlevel 3 in order to re-install my graphics card driver? I cannot run my 3D software without it. Can I switch to runlevel 3 from the usual (normal GUI) screen? I can't remember the command. I'm running SuSE 11.4.

I saw a good quick fix for grub after win 7 updates over here

My question is, after WIN 7 sp1 it seems every update win 7 does borks grub and resets the system to boot from the Win 7 boot partition, Is there a way to prevent this or is it going to be a boot from CD and repair after every update?

Cause I know M$ isn't going to want to fix it as they don't like sharing systems.

OpenSUSE Install :: After Kernel Update No Ext4 Support At Boot Time

Apr 20, 2010

telling me if this behavior of my openSuSE 11.2 installation is normal? I use a 64-Bit openSuSE 11.2 with kernel 2.6.31.x with root partition ext4. After adding and updating from repository kernel:/HEAD/etc to 2.6.34-rc4 I can not boot anymore due to a lack of module ext4. I thought today ext4 is stable and fix built-in in the actual kernel releases, isn't it? The error message at boot time: FATAL: Module ext4 not found. Which is right because in /lib/modules/<kernelversion>/kernel/ there is NO 'fs' subfolder. Isn't the kernel:/HEAD/ repository the official update path to get a newer major kernel? (besides openSuSE's Updates for security reasons) Do you know how I can fix it without self-compiling?

OpenSUSE Install :: Keyboard And Mouse Lost After Update - How To Boot In To Terminal?

Oct 15, 2010

I was working on something important in 11.2 and did a "zypper up" in the terminal in the background. I wasn't paying that much attention to it, I believe it was an update to 11.3. After returning to the computer after about one hour the windows were behaving strangely and the machine wasn't very responsive. I decided to reboot. Now at login I have neither mouse nor keyboard. I have switched the keyboard to PS2 model, no difference. If someone could help me with booting to run level 3 from the grub menu perhaps I could change some settings there to make everything work. I really regret doing the update. It would be very important for me to be able to get back in to machine with spending as little time as possible on this. Could I reverse the update? This machine is very important for me and my family for their daily communication, but currently I have very little time to fix this. My quick fix was to install Kubuntu 10.10 so I could resume working, but I would really need to get back in to 11.2.

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows Deployment Services - PXE Boot Aborted (Grub Rescue)

Dec 23, 2010

I previously had a machine that dual booted Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10 32 bit. I recently attempted to wipe out the 32 bit Ubuntu and install 64 bit Ubuntu.

Here what I did:
- I booted from the LiveCD, and had no problems
- I formatted /sda3 using gparted. I checked that Ubuntu resided on /sda3 via the command "sudo fdisk -l". This worked fine.
- I then clicked the "install ubuntu" option on the desktop, and chose the largest chunk of free space.
- About 15% through the install, I was told the CD could not be read from due to a potential scratch or issue. I then tried to revert back to the Os running from the LiveCD, and things went crazy. I had trouble shutting down the machine and did a hard reset.

Now, whenever I boot I am greeted with the following message:
Windows Deployment Services: PXE boot aborted
error: no such partition
grub rescue>
At the grub rescue prompt when I ls, I see:
(hd0) (hd0,4) (hd0,2) (hd0,1)

I can still boot the LiveCD. I tried that again and tried to again format sda3 using gparted but had no luck fixing the issue. When booting from the LiveCD I am also told by gparted that "sda1 does not coincide with a cylinder boundary" or something of that nature.

OpenSUSE Install :: Error 15 - File Not Found After Update 11.3 On A Dual-boot PC With Ubuntu 9.10

Oct 22, 2010

Recently I've installed Open Suse 11.3 along with Ubuntu 9.10 on my PC ( made it a dual-boot OS ). This morning while logged in, in Open Suse 11.3, found out that there were important update for kernel in Yast. So, did the update and then required to restart the PC. In the Grub/boot menu, I chose to log-in to Open Suse 11.3, but after a while it returned with " Error 15, file not found ". Luckily I was able to log-in in Ubuntu 9.10. Assumed that Error 15 is always related to misplaced or wrong configuration of Grub in the partition, I did several searching via Google, and found this possible solution HowTo Boot into openSUSE when it won't Boot from the Grub Code on the Hard Drive . So I tried the " Broken Grub menu: boot to the menu, drop to a console and boot openSUSE direct " method. But rightly after the " find /boot/grub/menu.lst " command as instructed in the solution, it returned with ( hd0,0 ) and ( hd0,4 ). Why there are 2 bootloader in the Grub ? Which bootloader should I choose ? And for convenience, here is my " menu.lst " folder that I get via Terminal in Ubuntu 9.10 :

$ cat /boot/grub/menu.lst
# menu.lst - See: grub(8), info grub, update-grub(8)
# grub-install(8), grub-floppy(8),

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Can't Boot To GUI After Update

Aug 30, 2010

today, I updated my OpenSuse 11.1 to 11.3. Since then, I can no longer enter GNOME, just the shell. Something like "gdmdisplay lasted x seconds" is diplayed several times. I have read on the web that there is a problem with NVIDIA cards (I have a Geforce 6200 LE). So far, I tried the following:

1) typing "nomodeset" to the boot options

2) adding device="fbdev" to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-device.conf, then blacklisting nouveau

3) installing the proprietary nvidia driver:

zypper ar -f ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.3/ nvidia
zypper install x11-video-nvidiaG02

When I do this, the system tries to retrieve metadata for the nvidia repository for a long time, then times out. And yes, I have internet, ping works.

4) downloading the nvidia driver and installing it manually - this aborts with the message that "kernel-source" can't be found.
