Ubuntu :: Can't Boot After Updating To 10.10 - Error: File Not Found

Mar 26, 2011

I have an HP Pavilion DV 6500 laptop running Windows 7 and Ubuntu (via Wubi). I just updated Ubuntu to 10.10 from 10.04. After restoring the Windows bootloader (which I need to do every time Grub gets updated), I can no longer boot up Ubuntu. When I select it from the bootloader, it gives me a couple of errors, the final one being: Error: File not found And then reboots the system automatically.

General :: Broken Dual Boot - Xp / Ub - Error: Error File Not Found - Grub Rescue

May 21, 2011

Ubuntu 9.10 was set up to handle the booting selection - previously I thought it was xp but Ubuntu 9.10 "did" it. The system started out as a xp / ubuntu 9.10 dual boot on a 400gb drive. xp has 210gb, ub has 80 and their is a 100gb shared storage. Xp was installed first and then I followed a guide over at linuxconfig.org to get ub installed so that I could select which OS was wanted at boot. Ubuntu manages the boot up menu (Went back to look at my notes from the original setup) The owner tried to update to ub 11.04 and afterall was said and done the machine now boots to the message

error file not found grub rescue I can't say if 11.04 was properly installed or not. Ask whatever you like and I'll give the best answer I can. I think the xp install is okay but I can't say for certain as I don't know how to boot it outside the bootmanager at startup. Data has been saved so if I have to blow it all away and start over I can but I'm hoping I won't have to.

Ubuntu :: Laptop Refuses To Boot From HDD - Error 15: File Not Found

Jan 20, 2011

When I boot my computer (emachines E528 laptop), it gets to the BIOS loading screen (the one where you have the option to press a function key to get to the BIOS settings), then it goes to a black screen and looks like it is going to load GRUB, but instead of loading GRUB, the computer reboots. It does this endlessly, unless I insert a LiveCD. So, it's not the BIOS. That's good. When the Mint GUI (Linux Mint was the LiveCD I was originally using as I just happened to have it on hand) loaded for the first time, I checked all of the hard drive partitions and they all seemed to load fine. So, it's not a mechanical problem with the HDD. That's good.

At this point, I figured the MBR had become corrupted somehow. Now I wasn't really sure exactly where the MBR was, or how it all worked, but I was pretty sure that if I just reinstalled GRUB, everything would be hunky dorey. Unfortunately, I hit a road block when trying to install GRUB. That's not good. I am trying to follow the instructions in this thread, but I get the following error:

Code:

grub> find /boot/grub/stage1
Error 15: File not found

So then I tried following the instructions here, but I don't know how to tell which drive is sda1, sda2, etc. I'm guessing there's some terminal command to figure it out, but I don't know it and Google was less than helpful. I feel like something that basic should be easy to find, but I digress.i am getting very close to backing up everything and reinstalling everything. Only problem with that is that I am not sure how to access the files on my Ubuntu partition as they are encrypted (I wrote down the key when I started it up, I just don't know how to bring up a prompt that will let me enter the key). I really don't want to reinstall and set everything back up, but if I have to I will. how to tell which partition is associated with which sda#, or how to access the files in my encrypted Ubuntu home folder. How do I tell which partition is associated to which sda#? How do I open my encrypted home folder from my Ubuntu partition?

Fedora Installation :: Error 15 / File Not Found At First Re-boot

Oct 27, 2009

I am getting a message at my first re-boot after install of "Error 15: File Not Found", and that's as far as it goes. I just installed Fedora 11 on a Drive that I had recently ran Ubuntu 9.04. I did re-partition and format the drive. I am also running Win XP Pro on another drive, and can boot from either. The computer is older, but all the hardware seemed to work fine with Ubuntu and altough I had to format the install drive a couple times the installation seemed to go ok.

Software :: Plop Boot - Error 15: File Not Found

May 12, 2011

Downloaded and installed [URL], copying it to the boot directory under grub. Everything went fine until after my initial reboot and selection of the FAILSAFE option just to check that that was OK. Went well until shutting down, when hung just after closing all files and putting finishing touches to sending kill signal to all processes, when it hung and had to touch power button briefly to complete shutdown; no big deal. When rebooted and this time selected "Plop Boot Manager Install" (repeatedly), got this message: Booting "Plop Boot Manager Install" root (hd0,1) Filesystem type is reiserfs, partition type 0x83 kernel [URL] root=/dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_TOSHIBA_MK4025G_65M21717A-part2 vga=0x314 resume=/dev/sda1 splash=silent showopts Error 15: File not found Press any key to continue

Then had to use FAILSAFE to reaccess OS. What I did in menu.lst: from title openSUSE 10.3 etc. changed to title Plop Boot Manager Install from root (hd0,1) kept it the same from kernel /boot/vmlinux-2.6.22.18-0.2-default changed to kernel [URL] (did not include the word default) Should I have made the root as (hd0,0)? Should I have added the -default to the [URL]? Any other understandings as to why this didn't work and got that error message?

Ubuntu Installation :: Installed OpenSUSE 11.3 And Can't Boot - Error 15: File Not Found

Nov 16, 2010

Decided I'd like to take a look at OpenSUSE and installed onto my desktop. Already successfully dual booting Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows XP (which I keep purely for iTunes). When I start the PC the Ubuntu grub menu showing Ubuntu and Windows options has been replaced by a Suse-branded screen showing something that looks (to my untrained eye) like a grub menu. Ubuntu and Suse are listed. If I select Ubuntu I am shown a dos screen with "Error 15: file not found". I am then taken to the old Ubuntu grub screen but trying to boot Ubuntu from that menu returns the same error. I know all the data is still there - I can mount the drive in Suse and view all my documents.

I have searched the forums and tried to follow some of the instructions given in response to similar threads but I'm afraid I didn't get very far. Please assume that I have NO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE of Linux! I really know nothing about it and am only just getting to grips with basic terminal commands. Goodness knows why I thought OpenSUSE would be a good idea... I found instructions for running Boot Info Script and these are the results:

OpenSUSE Install :: Error 15 - File Not Found After Update 11.3 On A Dual-boot PC With Ubuntu 9.10

Oct 22, 2010

Recently I've installed Open Suse 11.3 along with Ubuntu 9.10 on my PC ( made it a dual-boot OS ). This morning while logged in, in Open Suse 11.3, found out that there were important update for kernel in Yast. So, did the update and then required to restart the PC. In the Grub/boot menu, I chose to log-in to Open Suse 11.3, but after a while it returned with " Error 15, file not found ". Luckily I was able to log-in in Ubuntu 9.10. Assumed that Error 15 is always related to misplaced or wrong configuration of Grub in the partition, I did several searching via Google, and found this possible solution HowTo Boot into openSUSE when it won't Boot from the Grub Code on the Hard Drive . So I tried the " Broken Grub menu: boot to the menu, drop to a console and boot openSUSE direct " method. But rightly after the " find /boot/grub/menu.lst " command as instructed in the solution, it returned with ( hd0,0 ) and ( hd0,4 ). Why there are 2 bootloader in the Grub ? Which bootloader should I choose ? And for convenience, here is my " menu.lst " folder that I get via Terminal in Ubuntu 9.10 :

$ cat /boot/grub/menu.lst
# menu.lst - See: grub(8), info grub, update-grub(8)
# grub-install(8), grub-floppy(8),

General :: Updating Grub - Error : The Symbol 'grub_getcharwidth' Not Found?

May 4, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 and everything was working fine. I also have Win XP installed and Ubuntu 9.10.I was able to boot any of these OS's with no problem.Without understanding the ramifications of my actions, I enlarged the Windows partition to incorporate the unallocated space at the beginning of my disk using Easeus Partition Master from within my Windows OS. Apparently, I wiped out my grub!I have been able to boot to my 2.6.31-14 kernel (Ubuntu 10.04) using commands from the grub rescue prompt.Upon successful boot into the system, I initiated the command: sudo update-grub and my system still reports Error: the symbol 'grub getcharwidth' not found. Here is my grub.cfg:

#
# DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE
#
# It is automatically generated by /usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig using templates

# from /etc/grub.d and settings from /etc/default/grub[code]....

I know I must be close to resolution.

SUSE / Novell :: Grub Boot Loader - File Not Found - Error 15

Oct 12, 2010

I am unable to get a knoppix poor mans install to boot using grub and opensuse 11.3. I have tried the same method on another box, same opensuse 11.3 and it boots fine. However, no matter what partition I put the knoppix files in on the problem box, it is the same error. I also have several opensuse kernels listed in the grub menu that were added when the kernel was updated, so the knoppix grub entry is off the screen. I have to down arrow to list the knoppix entry. I read that with this kind of error using ubunto as the host system, that running update-grub will force grub to look for bootable kernels and add it to the menu of boot choices. Does the same fix apply to opensuse 11.3? I have two versions of puppy linux working on this box as a poor mans install, so I am at a loss why it will not see the knoppix kernel. Can it be a problem of too many kernels listed in the menu.lst file? This box is a live update from opensuse 11.0.

Ubuntu Installation :: File Not Found At Boot When Using Live USB Error Is "Missing Operatoring System"

Jun 13, 2010

I'm usin Ubuntu 9.10 and installed it a couple of months ago. I was trying to figure out how to use Synaptic to fix some dependancy errors I was getting, and set it to remove a certain package. It said it had to remove other packages as well to do this, well that ended up being Gnome and a whole bunch of other stuff. Silly me.So I was alright without having Gnome and went back to writing simple c++ from this book. I wrote a program to output a range of numbers and ran it but had written it wrong, so it would have ran on for hours. So I just killed the power and tried to start the comp again.

This time after the Dell boot screen it would tell me my system battery was low and strike F1 to continue or F2 to enter setup. Hit F1 and Im told that a file wasnt found and then it goes to the Ubuntu loading screen (The logo and some dots underneath) and then a black screen. Nothing else.I figured I needed to reintall and dont have any CDs so tried to make a live CD and this time when I try to boot from USB device get a "Missing Operating System" error. Its set to boot from USB device before harddrive. Need to know what to do to install again/recover old install.

Ubuntu Installation :: Error 15: File Not Found

Oct 24, 2010

Iv been using ubuntu on my laptop for just over a year now and thought it about time my desktop got the same. I cant get rid of the vista section of the disk because of things i have on there so a friend gave me a spare 80gb hard drive to have a play with it and go from there. So first of all installed unbuntu 10.10 on the hard drive alls fine i can boot into both vista and ubuntu, i then want to install backtrack 4, so i booted the backtrack disc and off we went, i split the 80gb hard drive in two and installed backtrack to one section, now i cant boot to anything other than backtrack. I got an option for ubuntu although this does look different now (showing up as 'ubuntu, with linux 2.6.35-22-generic-pae') when i go to this option i get the message "error 15:file not found" I also have the option for other operating system, i get this message when i choose this option "error 11: Unrecognized device string"

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Following Error 15: File Not Found?

May 21, 2010

My problem now is: After booting my laptop, Ubuntu doesn't load and i'm stuck in a GRUB command prompt and not sure what to do. If i type "boot" I get "error: no loaded kernel"Here is how I got there:1. I ran 9.1 healthily until I was prompted to do an upgrade. I ran the upgrade but some packages weren't authenticated so I ran a partial upgrade. 2. I reboot but I'm faced with "Error 15: File not found". After some research and going through the forums, I thought I found the solution by following these instructions to copy the GRUB files from the Live CD (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Gr...0from%20LiveCD)3. Once I completed this, I'm now stuck at a grub> prompt when rebooting (the error 15 has disappeared). (the screen header informs me i'm dealing with "GNU GRUB version 1.98-1ubuntu5"Any thoughts on what I might have done wrong? From my reading today, I might have installed GRUB2 (even though Grub legacy would have been appropriate?). What is the best way out?
