Ubuntu :: Desktop Frozen After Trying To Move Panel
Feb 25, 2010
Downloaded Ubuntu to try it out. It currently dual boots with with Windows XP on my Dell. Everything seemed to be going fine, until this problem: I started tweaking the panel (with the shortcuts). Put on the bottom with the Auto hide feature enabled. As soon as it hid, the bottom panel start glitching out, and this was followed by the desktop freezing. My media player continued to play and mouse was still moving, but I couldn't do anything. Had to manually shut down the computer. Turned it on and logged in - same problem. I think creating a new account by logging as "root" would fix this, but I have alot of preferences set up, passwords saved, etc on my account.

I was messing around with the alternate character panel app and made a custom character set. I then wanted to put it on a new panel and created a new panel. I moved the character set to that panel, and then started to mess around with the panel settings (auto hide, show hide buttons, and expand, to be specific.) So far so good, until I moved the panel from the right side of the screen to the top. I already had a panel here, and it seemed not to like hiding a panel when there was already one on the top.
When the new panel hid itself, all my panels stopped responding (any clicks on them did nothing) and my processor started going at 100%. I tried a reboot and the only thing that changed is that now I can't even see my panels. I'm guessing I need to change the settings back manually through the prompt, but I don't know how to do that. I am using 10.04 and have not upgraded gnome since upgrading to 10.04.

For Ubuntu 10.04 LTS / Gnome 2.30.2.
I have two applets on my Gnome panel -- NetworkManager Applet 0.8, and Klipper (it works better than Glipper) -- that I want to move.
HOWEVER, right-clicking the panel icons does not enable me to move these applets, as follows:
- NetworkManager Applet 0.8 does not include a Move item in its list of options.
- Klipper displays a long list of Klipper options but no Move option.
How I can move these items to new locations on the Gnome panel?

Anyone have any idea as to what would cause the time in the gnome panel to stop? This is an epic failure... I would have been late to work today if it weren't for the coffee pot. I've had so many issues with gnome's panels I'm considering switching Desktop environments.

I continually get times where an applet on the top panel breaks, such as the Indicator Session Applet, where it doesn't show the applet, and is mimicking the clocks display, but frozen, and no functionality. This is seen in the photo, where you can clearly see the right time and applet as 5:11 and the frozen one as 4:49.

Preface: I'm a relative neophyte when it comes to Linux anything. I was running Hardy in an attempt to learn. I recently decided to upgrade to Karmic. I liked the look of "Mint 8" (AKA Karmic).I've been running Mint nicely for about a week after a fresh install. Then.... something went spastic...
I went logged in as root and changed file permissions for my "/" folders. The change was simply making group "root" able to read and write files. Than was it. It carried out the change smoothly.
When I hit "Logout" from root, to return to my user account, the screen went white. Stuff flickered when I hit keys. I ended up having to hard boot to get it moving.
Now when I boot, Grub works, it boots to my desktop, graphics display appropriately, but NO mouse and NO keyboard. Dead system. Only thing I can do is hard boot.
I tried the recovery from Grub, no change. I have no idea where to begin. I go back and reinstall it again (3rd time). Sure glad I've kept my old W2K, or I'd be screwed.
PS - I booted the live Hardy CD to look at files. When partitions are mounted no files in "/" or "/home" can be seen.

I am really hoping this is an easy fix. Somehow, on my gnome desktop, my panels overlapped one another. I was dragging and dropping files into folders and unintentionally grabbed the smaller bar and dragged it over my larger application bar. Now, when I rebooted, all I see is my desktop. I don't use icons so I have none of those. The panels are completely gray. every once in a while I will see my trash bin flashing. I am unable to right click the desktop and I am unable to use Alt+F2 for my term.I can still use CTRL+ALT+ F1,F2,F3,F4... to get my non GUI terms. I have tried killall gnome-panelstill nothing.
This is a little... odd to me... a simple click renders an entire OS useless. I would really like to avoid uninstalling and reinstalling because that would just be something you would do with a microsoft product.Edit: Everyone in a while I can right click the desktop and I get the provided menu but that does nothing for me. Also, my hard drive is constantly 'thinking' I am assuming it is stuck trying to complete the gnome environment settings... I am not sure. Oh, I have also tried removing gnome-panel and ubuntu-desktop and reinstalling those.

I have KXstudio 64 installed, was changing the clock font and doing little, normal tweaks to the panel, pulled the edge in a little, and it just froze right there, and now the whole desktop is broken, unresponsive. Nothing works. I have yaquake terminal installed so i can access a terminal by hitting F12, and open applications that way, but no menu's, links, widgets, panel icons or anything are working at all, after rebooting, logging in as other user, nothing helps. I tried a apt-get install kdm or something like that, it didnt help tho.If the easiest thing to do is ditch the stupid buggy KDE desktop and switch to GNOME- then i'd prefer that.even while using the terminal, or applications opened thru it, it freezes periodically and i sit for a few minutes and it comes back. still no desktop tho.

I have followed the official instructions here to setup VNC service initially and was able to get it working.
However, during the course of setting up my BIND service, I have done the following:
1) Turned on SELinux
2) Used system-config-security to add the ports TCP:53 and UDP:53
When I tried to save the settings from 2) above, my GNOME desktop delivered via VNC got frozen.
Now when I tried to restart vncserver with "service vncserver restart", I see the following. I am also unable to connect via [url] anymore.
Code:

So I just updated my IdeaPad to Natty and played around with Unity. The performane was absolutely unbearable so I installed Unity2D from the software center. Now when I start the session everything seems to be fine at first. Whenever I move the mouse over the panel though it seems to switch to my old gnome-panel from the "Classic" session (with some missing icons). When I move the mouse over that panel again it switches back to the Unity panel style. What is going on? Can I fix this somehow? I will have to use the classic session until I get a working consistent behavior

I've had this problem before in Ubuntu but I don't remember how I fixed it. I have buttons for the open applications on the bottom panel. If I move from one to the other with the mouse, the button highlight doesn't follow. I have to go out of the panel and back in to a different button. I removed and reinstalled the applet to no effect.

This seems like it should be simple to do. I have a fresh F13 install running Gnome, and the gnome panel is on the left-hand side of the monitor. I want it on the righthand side. So far I have been unable to achieve this. I can't drag the panel (even with ALT held down), and if I try to set orientation to "Right" it changes back the "Left" again

I decided to persist with Unity having spent until today launching in an Ubuntu Classic session. The thing that bugs me the most is the fact that each program has its menu (ie File, Edit etc) in the top panel. This may be fine for netbooks but not my laptop.I just launched Tomboy, which startde with its window in the bottom right of the screen, however to get to the programs menu I have to move the cursor all the way to the top right of the screen - miles.

I right clicked on the panel and clicked "New Panel". This actually did nothing the first few times. Eventually it produced a panel on the right side of the screen. When I tried to alt+drag it to move it to my other screen, it won't move. The top and bottom panel do move appropriately.

This question concerns the system panel/launcher panel / the panel with the launcher that normally appears across the top or bottom of the screen. The default system panel layout was nice, but, I screwed it up by accidentally deleting the task manager. I put the task manager back but now my clock & system tray are to the left of the task manager, and, I can't just drag things around. Is there a trick to organizing the widgets on this panel or is it broken? Every time I try to move something, it basically ignores me and adds it to the right of everything else.

I'm using squeeze and the xserver-xorg-core, kdebase and kdm packages with their dependencies in addition to the base system installation. I get glitches when I try to drag the icons on the panel: I can't move them properly and occasionally the whole screen gets redrawn (by this I mean it goes black and gets back several seconds later.) and gives an error with signal 11 (segmentation fault). The problem is not specific to my user account, because I tried it with a newly created user, and I didn't do any configuration on mine either. I also experienced other glitches, about which I made some screenshots: [URL]

Upgraded from Karmic to Lucid (no clean install so to speak). Changed the visual effects to normal, but I somehow can't move a window to my 2nd desktop.
Changed the window manager from Compiz to metacity using the compiz fusion icon, but no result.
