I wonder if this is the right sub-forum I quite often play around with beta releases. Sometime the Screen freezes. (so what) However is there a key-stroke ctrl-?-? to get to a login prompt ????(rather then press the reboot button) ???
View 3 RepliesI'm having an issue when I'm trying to install SuSE linux onto my desktop.I go through all the steps and everything looks okay, but when it starts to install the packages, I get an error message that basically says:kernel.desktop - unable to install, exit status 127.I have a ATI X1950 video card in the computer, as well as a AMD 64 FX CPU in the system.
View 7 Replies View RelatedWhat i want to do is to have a stroke around my desktop font ( a black one ) since my screen wallpaper is kind of gray and the texts on it get really invisible.
I would like to know if i can do this only on the desktop fonts, since everything else looks fine.
I know it's really a hell of a lot easier to just change my wallpaper ( or edit it in GIMP ) but my moto on Linux has always been "If it can be done, why don't do it" ( I hope is sounds good in English too )
I installed 11.3 32 bit KDE on my system I had been running 11.0 32 for over a year.nVidia card, AMD quad, 4 gig RAM.Blender runs fine, fast and clean, when I exit, it takes a couple of seconds before I get control back.If I play a game, ArmagetronIOQuake, FrozenBubble - when I exit I get my mouse pointer back in a few seconds, you see a couple of the windows open on the desktop for a brief second but all goes black. When you move the mouse pointer around the screen it changes as if it is going over an icon or window but it does not recover.

- in init 3 : zypper cc && zypper ref && zypper up does not work : after reboot using "shutdown -r now" the pc is frozen, with the green screen and white lizard (no access to keyboard, nor to grub options), ctrl+ alt+ f1 is ko for example.
- in init 3 and only with 3 repos (oss, non-oss, and update of 11.4) a zypper dup works but a bug with mozilla firefox 4 brading opensuse which is ko . we continued , can one package break down a zypper dup ? ( same ko result : after reboot usinf shutdown -r now the pc is frozen with the green screen and white lizard (no access to keyboard, nor to grub options) )
Just upgraded to 11.3 from the terminal. There were a few hiccups, but it said to run "zypper verify," and it downloaded a few files and finished. When I rebooted, the graphics were fine, but the arrow in the middle of the screen is frozen. I can move the mouse till I get carpal tunnel, but the arrow ain't gion' nowhere. So how do I "unfreeze" my mouse? (Besides knitting it a sweater!) I'm hoping for a "ctrl/f2", and that aterminal can be opened that way, with a command to wake up the mouse dameon.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a repeatable and annoying problem that seems to be connected with the graphics card driver of nvidea. I had another card before (7900 card) and I have after having had a malfunction now a nvidea 430. Mainboard Gygabyte with AMD 790 Chipset, GB Ram. The opensuse system is fully patched and updated, newest kernel but the same error occurred with another graphic card and with the precedent kernel and with the precedent nvidia video driver.
Now, the problem is as follows:

I tried a LIVECD from Artistx: ArtistX - eXtra ordinary art tools Index of /mirrors/artistx And now my computer boots up into a kernel command line screen instead of the GUI type screen where I enter my name and password. Anyone know what this ##$%@ disk changed on my computer and how do I get it back to normal? Fail safe mode boots ok. On the LIVECD disk I selected boot from hard drive which worked but after I turn off my computer and restart, it goes back into that command line sign in screen and stays there.

I went away from the machine for a few hours and when I came back I had a blank screen. I turned the machine off but nothing comes back up. All key strokes fail to give me anything.

After the TV is shut down and restored the mouse cursor is "frozen":The old mouse image stays where it isHowever, the mouse IS active, in that you can (blindly) move the mouse, see it mouse-over widgets, and activate them - there's just no visible cursor where the hotspot is.Hardware is ATI chipset (can't remember which, offhand, but it's only a year or two old), running AMD driver, with a HDMI link to the TV.
View 2 Replies View RelatedPreface: I'm a relative neophyte when it comes to Linux anything. I was running Hardy in an attempt to learn. I recently decided to upgrade to Karmic. I liked the look of "Mint 8" (AKA Karmic).I've been running Mint nicely for about a week after a fresh install. Then.... something went spastic...
I went logged in as root and changed file permissions for my "/" folders. The change was simply making group "root" able to read and write files. Than was it. It carried out the change smoothly.
When I hit "Logout" from root, to return to my user account, the screen went white. Stuff flickered when I hit keys. I ended up having to hard boot to get it moving.
Now when I boot, Grub works, it boots to my desktop, graphics display appropriately, but NO mouse and NO keyboard. Dead system. Only thing I can do is hard boot.
I tried the recovery from Grub, no change. I have no idea where to begin. I go back and reinstall it again (3rd time). Sure glad I've kept my old W2K, or I'd be screwed.
PS - I booted the live Hardy CD to look at files. When partitions are mounted no files in "/" or "/home" can be seen.
I am really hoping this is an easy fix. Somehow, on my gnome desktop, my panels overlapped one another. I was dragging and dropping files into folders and unintentionally grabbed the smaller bar and dragged it over my larger application bar.Now, when I rebooted, all I see is my desktop. I don't use icons so I have none of those. The panels are completely gray. every once in a while I will see my trash bin flashing. I am unable to right click the desktop and I am unable to use Alt+F2 for my term.I can still use CTRL+ALT+ F1,F2,F3,F4... to get my non GUI terms. I have tried killall gnome-panelstill nothing.
This is a little... odd to me... a simple click renders an entire OS useless. I would really like to avoid uninstalling and reinstalling because that would just be something you would do with a microsoft product.Edit: Everyone in a while I can right click the desktop and I get the provided menu but that does nothing for me. Also, my hard drive is constantly 'thinking' I am assuming it is stuck trying to complete the gnome environment settings... I am not sure. Oh, I have also tried removing gnome-panel and ubuntu-desktop and reinstalling those.
Downloaded Ubuntu to try it out. It currently dual boots with with Windows XP on my Dell. Everything seemed to be going fine, until this problem: I started tweaking the panel (with the shortcuts). Put on the bottom with the Auto hide feature enabled. As soon as it hid, the bottom panel start glitching out, and this was followed by the desktop freezing. My media player continued to play and mouse was still moving, but I couldn't do anything. Had to manually shut down the computer. Turned it on and logged in - same problem. I think creating a new account by logging as "root" would fix this, but I have alot of preferences set up, passwords saved, etc on my account.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have KXstudio 64 installed, was changing the clock font and doing little, normal tweaks to the panel, pulled the edge in a little, and it just froze right there, and now the whole desktop is broken, unresponsive. Nothing works. I have yaquake terminal installed so i can access a terminal by hitting F12, and open applications that way, but no menu's, links, widgets, panel icons or anything are working at all, after rebooting, logging in as other user, nothing helps. I tried a apt-get install kdm or something like that, it didnt help tho.If the easiest thing to do is ditch the stupid buggy KDE desktop and switch to GNOME- then i'd prefer that.even while using the terminal, or applications opened thru it, it freezes periodically and i sit for a few minutes and it comes back. still no desktop tho.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to boot Ubuntu off of a USB drive. The USB drive was created via the USB creator in the .iso file dowloaded from Ubuntu. But for some reason when I go into my BIOS and boot from the USB drive, it spits out one line of syslinux and copyright information ending in "et al" and then a flashing cursor but doesn't go any further. I would provide a screenshot but that isnt an option at the moment with not being able to get past the first line of booting. Also, I have never used Ubuntu as this is my first attempt at running it and it is obviously not going the best.

However, during the course of setting up my BIND service, I have done the following:
1) Turned on SELinux
2) Used system-config-security to add the ports TCP:53 and UDP:53
When I tried to save the settings from 2) above, my GNOME desktop delivered via VNC got frozen.
Now when I tried to restart vncserver with "service vncserver restart", I see the following. I am also unable to connect via [url] anymore.

I Just clicked on the Desktop Effects menu item and the system rebooted and now I can only log in through a tty. I have to use "startx" to get X to start up then I seem to have no file manager.
It seems Desktop Effects and my nvidia driver don't play well.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI am relatively new at Linux and am having some problems with an install of openSUSE 11.2. I installed 11.2 on my Thinkpad X31 dual boot with WinXP. It seems to work very well except the network. I looked up swerdna's instructions on setting network cards up. I used YaST to try and set the system up as described in swerdna's instructions. Everything looks fine my network card and wireless card show up in the overview settings screen and everything sets up fine. But when I exit YaST the network doest show up no icon in the system tray and it doesn't even try to connect.
I did go into hardware to see if it was identifying my hardware and my network card shows up as "Thinkpad R40" and the wireless shows up as Cisco Aironet Wireless 802.11b. As far as I know this is correct. I have tried three other distro's and this one has gotten the closest to working so far.
I noticed that if I have "exit" in a bash script file., e.g. script.sh,that when the word "exit" is reached, and the script file being executed is not in the PATH nvironment, i.e. ". script.sh", the whole konsole shell profile is exited! What gives here? Is there another command compatible to "exit" to prevent this, or will I just have the leave the "." part in the PATH enviroment, which is, to my understanding, is not recommended? I desire for a "goto" function in bash script files

I also have difficulty when using a mouse of moving the mouse as I select something (click the button) from whatever window I am working with and thereby selecting the wrong thing. To compensate for this difficulty, I use a Logitech trackball and program the center button to perform a double click with one stroke. I am currently struggling with Linux Mint 9 in my search for a Windows alternative. Is there any way to program my center button (scroll wheel) to perform a double click in this or any other Linux version? Alternatively, is there any way to program a keyboard key to perform a double mouse click with a single stroke? I do not want any multiple key combinations for this operation, I want something that works with a single click of one button.
