As the title implies, I have fluxbox and conky running in Karmic. The problem is getting conky to start at startup. Below is my ~/.fluxbox/startup file. I have searched and tried everything I have found to get it to work. Conky works beautifully when I run it manually. Anyway, here is my startup file:
Code:
#!/bin/sh
xmodmap "/home/doug/.Xmodmap"
unclutter -idle 2 &
conky &
exec fluxbox -log "/home/doug/.fluxbox/log"
Lines added before and after the conky line run perfectly. Unclutter runs, but no conky.

my Conky needed the Coretemp, and a friend of LQ told me to run modprobe, and it works greate! no every time I start my system, I need to run the modprobe to add the module to Kernel. How can I put the coretemp to start every startup? (I think there is somenthing to do with a file on the rc.module at /etc/rc.d/, but I'm afraid to do something stupid...) I want to make the conky running after start of the system. How can I do this?

I have conky installed and set up as a startup application, however everytime I log out and back in conky creates itself as a new window:
How can I get conky to start normally without having to do a manual restart everytime I login?

I'm experiencing low importance nuisance with conky. I'm running ubuntu 10.10 and use conky to have basic system overview. Whenever I mount/umount USB flash, conky disapears from display. It does not crash, it only falls into neverending sleep (process state: Sl+). When I send rehub signal (kill 1 {conky_pid}) conky happily wake up, reloads configuration and shows me what I want to see. I dont have anything USB realted in my monitor.

A lot of times when I start up my computer, instead of the graphical login screen I'm brought to a CLI login. If I log in and do "startx," it'll start KDE, but sound doesn't work and the shutdown/restart options disappear. (The logout option is still there.) It's inconsistent; sometimes it'll start the GUI and sometimes it won't. I have yet to find out what causes it to work right and what causes it to bring me to the CLI. When it doesn't work, if I run "shutdown -r now" or "shutdown -h now," it'll start the GUI as the computer is shutting down. I've tried Ctrl+Alt+F7 when it's brought me to the CLI, but it didn't do anything

I recently updated to Ubuntu 10.04. On this same machine I've used Ubuntu for 3 or 4 years now. Upgrading from 8 - 9 - 10. I love Ubuntu and use it as my everyday work environment. Anyway, recently when I start my machine in the morning it boots to commandline instead of the desktop. For the last couple days I boot to safe-mode and do a package repair. Sometimes more than once. Eventually I get the desktop to start but it is annoying. When trying to boot to Fail Safe Graphics Mode(?) I get an error stating: "Fatal Server Error: No Screens." The message referred me to /var/log/Xorg/failsafe.log. Here is a snippet of the end of that log file:
[code]...
Also, I'm using an NVidia graphics card on an HP machine. I installed the "current version" accelerated graphics driver which it says is proprietary.

Every time I start Ubuntu, I set up an ssh session to a server. In order to automate this I made an entry in startup programs like this:/usr/bin/gnome-terminal -e '/usr/bin/ssh name@server.com'Nothing happens when I log in, and I've checked that the command works.

I It does not start when the system boots. The smbd daemon is present and there are no suspicious messages in the system log, dmesg or the samba logs. The nmb service *is* enabled at all of the relevant run levels and does start if I issue the command "service nmb start" as root after I log in. This particular box's networking is 802.11n via a usb port and is under the control of the network manager. I have another fedora 12 box with an internal intel 5100 802.11n card and it does not have this problem.

Anyone noticing intermittent problems with the screensaver not kicking in or the display not sleeping? This is in gnome under F11.I have the Power Management Preferences set to put the display to sleep after 30 minutes of inactivity and gnome screensaver is configured for 5 minutes idle time.On a regular basis, I'll leave my computer come back anda) the screensaver hasn't kicked inorb) the screensaver kicked in, but the power management features didn't kick in to put the display to sleep.It seems to be an intermittent problem and usually it goes away after I restart X, but then at some point it comes back. In the past, I've gotten in the habit of being logged in for weeks/months at a time but I find that I can't go more than a few hours without logging out and back in or else the screen won't go to sleep.

I am not sure why, but my wireless networking icon on the top right of the panel doesn't show up any more during startup. Previously during startup, the applet would show up and then after a while connected to my wireless network seamlessly.
The only thing I did before and after it stopped working was to enable auto login. I cannot disable auto-login through the GUI and according to postinings in the forums no one knows how to do it through the command line interface.
In the 'Startup Applications' menu it is checked for startup with the command line saying "nm-applet --sm-disable". What can I do to have the network manager icon automatically startup when I turn on Ubuntu? Right now I get it to work by typing "sudo nm-applet" in the terminal window and then pasting my wireless encryption key.

I use Opensuse 11 with fvwm. How can I get conky start automatically when I start fvwm?
I setup the conky under fvwm session for my Opensuse 11 but it won't start automatically. I am wondering how to write some kind of scripts to force it to start automatically and with a delay about 10 seconds after fvwm starts.

I want conky to run at startup. I put an entry in startup applications but when it starts it covers everything (see attached image). I can fix it (i.e. moving a window over it covers conky) by running killall conky && conky , but I don't want to have to do that all the time.
I suspect the problem has to do with the window type, but don't know how to fix it. Also, I don't want to lose sight of the icons/files on the desktop.
Here's my conky.rc:

I'm having trouble getting conky to boot friendly-like with the gwm. If I just set conky as a start up program, it floats above other windows, it seems to have loaded before the desktop actually did. So I googled it and found that many people use the conky shell scripts to make it sleep until the desktop load. I created one, made it executable, and restarted to see the effect and found that conky never launched at all (not visible, no running process).
Here is my startup shell script for conky:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
sleep 10 && conky;
This is how it should look if working properly. If I launch conky after login, it looks like this every time. [URL]. This is how it looks if I simply set it to open upon startup with no script. [URL]. If I try to open it with the script, I simply never see anything in conkys place. It seems like the script never executes. I've tried setting longer and shorter sleep times, but I never see so much as a single instance of conky running.

I am trying to run a script that runs at startup. I have followed directions found at this Website: [URL]. Everything works except the script which consists of two lines.
#!/bin/bash
sleep 30 && conky ;
I changed the file permissions to be executed and named it .conky-startup.sh.
Then I went to System>Preferences>Startup Applications and created a new entry that points to my script file. When I restarted my system, Conky didn't start. If I try to run the file from Nautilus or the Terminal, nothing happens.

I have conky running a simple script on my Ubuntu 11.04 install. Running conky from using ALT-F2 is fine, but I have have conky added to the startup list, and when it runs from this, the conky window is different (ie not integrated with desktop layer). It has some shadowing around the edge and it seems to be on a layer other than the desktop. In addition to this, it stops running after a short while. I then run conky from ALT-F2 again and it's appears as I want, and stays there all day. I have included what I think is the relevant code below from my conkyrc. Has anyone had similar issues with a suitable way to resolve the problem?
Code:
own_window yes
own_window_transparent yes
own_window_type override
#own_window_type desktop
#own_window_type normal
#
own_window_type conky
own_window_class Conky

I recently upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 and I have noticed an increase in loading time when logging in.What use to take less then 1 sec is now taking 3-4. It sometimes is able to start conky but most of the time it doesn't. When I manual run it after login in it has no problems starting.When I start a session with 9.04 I noticed it would go straight to fluxbox it would then take a few seconds to load conky and pidgin. When starting a session with 9.10 the loading seems to happen before the login manager passes control to fluxbox. When the login manager is finished pidgin is signed and ready, there is no more loading to be done.
Would removing the login manager and starting a session from the terminal be advisable? I only use fluxbox.

I have been wanting conky to run at start up... fortunately I got that part done (I am very new) but after that, even though my conky was not configured to stand on top of my applications it would, and I didn't want that so I added some more code, and now it disappears if I click over it, it is still running, just not visible.
Here is my code...

i have the following problem which i couldnt solve in the past weeks. We have two Server with an onboard "Atheros AR8161 Gigabit Ethernet (rev 10)" and a quad "Realtek RTL8111/8168B" network adapter connected via PCIe. One of the servers is running Debian Wheezy with a custom 3.2.53Kernel (compiled from linus repository) and the second one runs Debian Jessie with stock kernel. Both are running XFCE4.
Each of the computers are connected to a local network (192.168.0.1 respectively .2) and to the intranet of our institute (10.20.0.81 respectively .82). After a random time they are not accessible via the intranet (ping doesnt work, ssh gives no route to host). However, i can still ping them over the local network. Also, at the moment i try to establish a ssh connection over the local network, the computer is again acessible via the intranet.
I already tried the boot options acpi=off and pcie_aspm=off without success. Additionally we switched from the onboard Atheros NIC to the Realtek, but everything stays the same. Therefore i don't believe that it is driver related.
For me it looks like that the NIC goes to an energy saving mode which is not handled correctly by our intranet. However, how can i avoid that the NIC goes to energy saving state? Is there a way to disable the D-states?
