No wireless after upgrading to linux kernel 3.0 in opensuse 11.4. I'm using Kde and gnome 3, everything was working fine under the 2.6.39 kernel, but now both only detects my wired connection. Any help resolving this would be greatly appreciated. I have a Netgear WNDA3100 adapter that uses the Atheros drivers. It also is no longer detected in my Fedora 15 after upgrading the kernel, but it still works in Mint 11 with the 2.6.38.8 kernel.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just recently upgraded my kubuntu install from karmic to lucid and now it takes about 10-15 minutes to boot. Directly after the upgrade it was pretty slow already, but it got worse every day from then. The karmic version was a wubi install I moved to a dedicated partition using lvpm. Here are the results from the bootinfoscript code...
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with the kernel update to 2.6.34.6. Up until 2.6.33.x my system boots fine, but with this update the boot stops at the moment that the mouse cursor should become visible. To resolve the problem, I've gone back to 2.6.33.x and removed the 2.6.34 kernel but I wonder what happens with the next kernel update.
Anyone else having this problem?
I updated ubuntu and installed the latest linux kernel. I rebooted back into ubuntu, then finished up some work and went to reboot into windows 7. The "starting windows" logo comes up then it blue screens and says "cannot boot %hs missing" (hard to read because it flashed on the screen then reboots).I ran startup recovery but that didnt do anything. I also tried downgrading the kernel but that didnt change anything.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to get Ubuntu on my beloved 4 year old Acer desktop that's been chugging like a tank. However, after either a fresh install or upgrade, I would get the following error:"Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount to root FS on unknown-block(0,0)".I've looked here and there, and one of the issues it would seem is the kernel not recognizing my hard drive if I'm correct. One of the suggestions was to upgrade the kernel however, I have no idea how to do such a thing if I can't get into the OS.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI had problems with booting my PC after kernel updates several times. In the past I just reinstalled Ubuntu and after several tries with running Update Manager things were working again. This time I applied another recommended set of updates, including a kernel upgrade and got the usual "Kernel Panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unkown-block(0,0)"After booting from a LiveCD and running boot_info_script I rebooted again and this time I am getting tons of errors which seem to be generated while running grub. After a few minutes of 'error: syntax error' and 'error: Incorrect command' scrolling through my screen, grub gives my a grub> prompt... I have two RAIDed disks (mirrored and showing OK during POST). The disk shows above as a6071eb5-6fc6-45b3-babb-c1a2156278d7. Ubuntu 10.10 installs fine from a LiveCD, but gets broken by kernel updates. I can see the original 1 TB disk when I start with the LiveCD and I can access all the files.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI've been running Ubuntu 10.04 AMD64 on our home theater PC through a wubi installation. Yesterday the system update installed a new kernel and today there is a problem booting the computer so I'm reluctantly using Windoze to type this. there isn't much information: the computer has always booted fine before the kernel update. When I select Ubuntu in the boot menu the screen goes black and the computer restarts. No error messages, no GRUB menu, just a blank screen before restart.

What am I doing wrong?
The best word that suits me to introduce is I am a novice! :-) but it is the difficult part get over with the new things and learnings!
Well once such situation made me introduce me to you is "Kernel Crash". I've recently installed Fedora 14 64 bit version on my HP HDX premium series, since then this Kernel crash is chasing me down! code...
I cant boot into Fedora 10 using the latest kernel. It just hangs after grub, I can still boot into an older kernel. The problem is its a fresh install that I ran a full update on straight away, and now I cant install videoaudio drivers because the kernel-header packages (and others) are installed for the latest kernel. Is there any boot parameters I can try to add when booting that might help?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI had a total freeze during a kernel upgrade, and reinstalled my system(kubuntu karmic) but still cannot boot.
when I try, I get this sequence of text on my screen:
Code:

Error 15
I know that error 15 means "file not found", but not how to figure out which file it is or how to point correctly to it.
I have tried to install the system on partitions on two separate disks, with the same end result. on the original disk I had some trouble getting through grub install, but on the other disk there were no indications of trouble during setup. can this a problem with the MBR on the first drive?
I have one drive connected by PATA, the rest by SATA, will SATA1 be (hd0)[grub] and /dev/sda [linux], is it the PATA drive, or some other means to determine this without examining the make and model of each drive?

I've just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.010 - Maverick Meerkat.
Launching VMWare Player 3.1.2 I get the message: "Before you can run VMWare, several modules must be compiled and loaded into running kernel".
I click ok, but there are problems recompiling VMCI sockets.
The effect is that my windows image starts, but then crashes.
Do you have some suggestions to solve the problem ? Or is it only a problem of compilation with the new 10.10 kernel, not yet available for VMWare?
I messed up my install so now I can't boot it. I get errors. I doubt I'll be able to fix it. I messed up the upgrade of the kernel images... I'm not sure whether there's something I could do in the Grub config file... I have one other Linux OS I can use in the meantime (plus Windows OS) so I thought maybe boot that up and check the Debian partition in case there's any files I want to save/keep. If I re-install, is Debian Squeeze LXDE still a good choice? I'm going to install something different in the partition where the other Linux OS is. Right now, it's grub is handling the boot loader. The computer is an old laptop, a Thinkpad T41. The HDD is 160GB.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am running Debian squeeze. A while ago I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.38 from backports. Just now I thought it would be good to upgrade to 2.6.39 from backports. Upgrade went fine, but after rebooting I get a kernel panics rightaway.
"No filesystem could mount root, tried:"
"Kernel panics = not syncing: VFA: Unable to mount root fs on unkown-block(0,0)."
This is the first time one of Linux installations halts/panics on booting, so I don't know what to do now. I tried booting the recovery entry from the grub boot menu, but same result.

I can boot up with an Ubuntu 9.1 live disk, and it shows the installed version of Ubuntu and all my data are still there. Is there a way to do a general repair, that will enable my computer to boot up from the installed operating system?
Can't boot after updating x this has happened before but not like this. Grub works just fine but nothing after what I can't do
1 10.04 = black screen
2 recovery mode=black screen
3 ctrl+alt+f1 = nothing
I installed lucid the other day on my laptop, the first time it booted after installing it gave two error messages (unfortunately I can't remember what they said). The errors stopped appearing after that but once I select Ubuntu from the boot menu, it just hangs on a black screen for a good 15 seconds at the least before it runs the plymouth screen for like 2 seconds (the progress bar is already full) and then goes into the login screen. Here is my boot chart:

I was wondering if anyone can tell from that what is causing the issue and perhaps how to fix it? The boot log is like 3 lines long and is completely normal.
I have a dual boot (2 hard drive) system, and upgraded to 10.4. Booting into XP results in a flashing cursor that doesn't do anything. I know that GRUB screwed everything up, but I need to know what to do--and assume I don't know what I'm doing--to restore my dual boot ability.
Here's what I get after running a boot info script code...
For the past few days, my Ubuntu server (it is a desktop that functions as a server, Desktop installed) have been very slow.
Today, it stopped responding to ping, I could not SSH into it (once, I managed to come so far that it asked for my password, but I got timed out) and I could not connect via VNC.
I switched it off, to boot it up again. Post completed, and the screen went black, before the white text "Read Error" appeared on the screen.
I shut it down again, waited a minute or so, before switching it back on. This time, the "read error" did not show up. The "text only" startup for Ubuntu showed up, so I hoped it was all okay. It turned out it wasnt.
I have some pictures:

Any ideas on what could be the issue here, and how to fix it?
I bought a Linux magazine as a Christmas present attached to it was a 8GB distro-loaded disc sporting Ubuntu 9.10 (which is already on my system,) Mandriver, and open-SUSE 11.2 which I decided to install.
Problem is, I can't get into Ubuntu anymore, where all my mail music ect is.
Ubuntu is listed with vista in window 2 of open-suse grub. When I try to boot Ubuntu I get an earlier kernel splash which is somewhat magnified and busybox v1.1.3. Vista boots OK.
Would un installing openSUSE put things back as they were? I can learn about open-SUSE using the DVD
My first attempt at seeking help has not been very successful. Probably to much of a narrative. If you want to know How I got in this mess see my first post.
