Ubuntu :: Lucid Boot Hangs For A While / Solve This?
May 2, 2010
I installed lucid the other day on my laptop, the first time it booted after installing it gave two error messages (unfortunately I can't remember what they said). The errors stopped appearing after that but once I select Ubuntu from the boot menu, it just hangs on a black screen for a good 15 seconds at the least before it runs the plymouth screen for like 2 seconds (the progress bar is already full) and then goes into the login screen. Here is my boot chart:
http://akgenome.com/files/bootchart.png
I was wondering if anyone can tell from that what is causing the issue and perhaps how to fix it? The boot log is like 3 lines long and is completely normal.

I have a problem with the kernel update to 2.6.34.6. Up until 2.6.33.x my system boots fine, but with this update the boot stops at the moment that the mouse cursor should become visible. To resolve the problem, I've gone back to 2.6.33.x and removed the 2.6.34 kernel but I wonder what happens with the next kernel update.
Anyone else having this problem?

I use an IBM Thinkpad T30 with an ATI Radeon Mobility 7500 graphics card as my work machine, mostly at a desk, using a docking station to link it into a monitor. I upgraded to Lucid last weekend. When using the integral screen on the laptop the graphics have been fine, but when using a monitor I initially got some very poor contrast, brightness and gamma output, described in this bug.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/lu...ux/+bug/548709
According to the advice in that bug report, I upgraded the kernel, with Kernelcheck automatically updating me to 2.6.35-candela. Now, rather than poor graphics with the monitor it just hangs on the splash screen, displaying the words Ubuntu with the dots underneath.
Reading around, when similar problems have been seen in previous versions of Ubuntu it has been a graphics issue, which fits. One piece of advice I've seen quite commonly is to remove the "quiet splash" from grub, which I've tried but doesn't work. I am tempted to try and work through the different grub commands these guys used to tackle a similar problem with the live CD:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1472054
But am a bit reticent as I don't know what they all do.
As an aside, the 2.6.35-candela kernel brings up a bunch of errors on boot, described at the link below, but reading that thread they don't look like they would cause my problem:

I'm unable to get my Ubuntu 10.04LTS to see my Mac 10.6.4 machine.
I've got Samba and AFP enabled under the Mac file sharing preferences.
Attempt1: From Ubuntu, I can see my Mac under Network>Places, but I'm unable to mount the location.
Attempt2: In Ubuntu, I went to Places>Connect to Server and entered the following:
Service: Windows Share
Server: [name of my mac]
Share: [name of my shared folder]
Folder:
User Name: [username]
Domain Name: WORKGROUP
With this entered, I was able to get as far as being prompted for my password, but was still unable to connect.
Attempt3: I followed the same steps above, but left Domain Name blank. Still nothing.
Are there any docs out there for the correct steps? I can only find posts on getting Mac to see Ubuntu, but not the other way around.

I just installed Ubuntu Lucid yesterday, and I'm dual-booting with Windows 7. (They're on separate physical drives if that's relevant.) I've discovered that whenever I restart the computer, it doesn't matter if it's from Windows or Ubuntu or just hitting the reset button, it hangs at "Loading Operating System." If I start it cold, though, it usually works fine. I tried Googling but I couldn't seem to find anybody else with this problem. I'm guessing it's a GRUB problem? Does anybody know how to fix it?

Last night I shut down my computer and left, since it goes automatically after I tell it to shut down. This morning, my computer was still on, with some shutdown messages like "Stopping MySQL server mysqld" and such.
The last line said "deactivating swap..." and didn't appear to be doing anything. code...

When I try logging in using any user name, ubuntu just returns to the login screen. I cannot actually log in. I used the recovery mode to create a new login with password 123456, and the same thing happens. What could it be? Ubuntu worked just fine for a while, then DKMS started causing problems, I had errors with upgrades, software installs/uninstalls, then my sound went. I found a great fix for the sound (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting), the sound came back, but then I could not log back in again. I cannot find any help for this issue, and had to install 9.10 Karmic Koala, and that's what I have been using for the past couple of days.10.04 has been fairly buggy for me and I am considering staying with 9.10, or going to another Linux distro.

32 bit Lucid is hanging at random times for me. it always happens when there's some sort of full-screen overlay, like when waking from screensaver, or when using gksu (dims the screen). The machine will remain unresponsive for 30 seconds to a minute, then becomes usable again, just with the desktop not refreshed. Nothing of interest in the logs when this happens. The last thing upgraded in the machine was the graphics card (now running a GTS 450). 3d apps work just fine, temps are just fine, and I have no reason to believe it's hardware.

I just upgraded my server from 9.10 to 10.04. I have ISPconfig installed on it and worked like a charm until the upgrade. Now when I point a browser to my site the page just hangs as if it is trying to load it but I never get an error nor does it load the page. I have tried to restart apache using /etc/init.d/apache2 restart in which I receive an fail error:
root@ubuntu:~# /etc/init.d/apache2 restart
* Restarting web server apache2 (9Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80
no listening sockets available, shutting down
[Code].....
After this I still get the same results when trying to load the page in the browser.
I cannot load anything in the www root or virtual host files.

I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed on my PC with 1GB of RAM and 3GB of Swap partition. But the machine gets hung or reboots itself when the usage is even marginally higher. This is the output of "free -m" for Swap:
Swap: 2908 11 2897
I have tried increasing the swappiness to 80, and this not made any difference. I believe the RAM is taking up all the load and none of the pages are going in to the swap. Hence the slow response and the frequent hung system. I know this is an old PC but Windows XP (installed on another HDD) runs way better on the same configuration.

When this happens you have to open a terminal, get the process id for mysql-server-5 then kill that process. Like this:
Code:
ps -A
then from the list of processes that it spits out look at the process id (the number at the beginning of the line) for mysql-server-5.
Now type
Code:
sudo kill -9 XXXXX
where XXXXX is the process id for mysql-server, and enter your password. The upgrade process should now resume.

My computer won't boot up from the installed version of Ubuntu. I was running 8.04 with no problems, but it stopped working after entering a command code to fix the limit for virus definitions on Avast. I removed the code, but now on boot up all I get is a blank screen and blinking cursor.
I can boot up with an Ubuntu 9.1 live disk, and it shows the installed version of Ubuntu and all my data are still there. Is there a way to do a general repair, that will enable my computer to boot up from the installed operating system?

I downloaded the x86 server version for Lucid twice today. Both times before burn the md5 match those published on the Ubuntu site. I am attempting to install the system on a Dell poweredge 2500. 2x 1.4 gb P4 procs, 1 gb ram, 750 GB HDD (raid) Boot to installer. it goes through the standard language checks, keyboard, checks for cdrom, then attempts to start copying files.
It gets to 17% copy on fs-core-modules-2.6.32.21-generic-di and hangs there for 5 minutes or so. Then comes back with the error that it could not get the file and asks if I want to retry. all retries lead back to this error. As I said, MD5 is exact, burner does not complain of a bad burn, and disk is closed at the end of the burn. so, has anyone else been able to install Lucid server x86? burned four disks today, one pair on two different burners. All fail at 17% retrieving that file.

I have a dual boot (2 hard drive) system, and upgraded to 10.4. Booting into XP results in a flashing cursor that doesn't do anything. I know that GRUB screwed everything up, but I need to know what to do--and assume I don't know what I'm doing--to restore my dual boot ability.
Here's what I get after running a boot info script code...

For the past few days, my Ubuntu server (it is a desktop that functions as a server, Desktop installed) have been very slow.
Today, it stopped responding to ping, I could not SSH into it (once, I managed to come so far that it asked for my password, but I got timed out) and I could not connect via VNC.
I switched it off, to boot it up again. Post completed, and the screen went black, before the white text "Read Error" appeared on the screen.
I shut it down again, waited a minute or so, before switching it back on. This time, the "read error" did not show up. The "text only" startup for Ubuntu showed up, so I hoped it was all okay. It turned out it wasnt.
I have some pictures:

Any ideas on what could be the issue here, and how to fix it?

I bought a Linux magazine as a Christmas present attached to it was a 8GB distro-loaded disc sporting Ubuntu 9.10 (which is already on my system,) Mandriver, and open-SUSE 11.2 which I decided to install.
Problem is, I can't get into Ubuntu anymore, where all my mail music ect is.
Ubuntu is listed with vista in window 2 of open-suse grub. When I try to boot Ubuntu I get an earlier kernel splash which is somewhat magnified and busybox v1.1.3. Vista boots OK.
Would un installing openSUSE put things back as they were? I can learn about open-SUSE using the DVD

I just recently upgraded my kubuntu install from karmic to lucid and now it takes about 10-15 minutes to boot. Directly after the upgrade it was pretty slow already, but it got worse every day from then. The karmic version was a wubi install I moved to a dedicated partition using lvpm. Here are the results from the bootinfoscript code...

I have the /boot partition on an extended ext4 /dev/sda5 which is 50 MB size which was fine when I first set it up. It seems however that it is no longer sufficient for GRUB2:
Code:
$ sudo apt-get upgrade

I've tried reinstalling Slackware64 13.1 to my PC a number of times over the past couple of days and I still have not been able to get it to boot.
Once it's installed I reboot and it tells me it can't find the operating system.
I've tried fdisk, cfdisk and GParted to set up the disk by deleting partitions and recreating them.
When I install and get to the section about installing LILO it says I have an OS/2 or Partition Magic boot manager on the drive, but there isn't. It asks if I want to install LILO in a compatible way with the boot manager and I say no, and install to the MBR. When I reboot it says it can't find the OS.
When I try to boot from the install DVD and get to the boot: prompt, I'll enter /dev/sda1 and it says there is no kernel.
Is there something else I'm missing?
