Ubuntu :: Any Way To Use Dpkg To Rollback Recently Installed Packages?
May 30, 2010Using Ubuntu Lucid with Gnome desktop.I was just playing around trying to find a media player I liked and installed Bangarang via the Software Centre. This took an absolute age and now I realise why - it has basically installed the entire KDE environment and associated lib packages as well.I have found /var/ log/ dpkg.log shows what has been installed and of course I can wade through that to make a list of all the packages and uninstall them all via Synaptic. But that will take a long time to do.
Is there anyway to somehow automate rolling back any package changes since a certain time?I've checked the man for dpkg and I can't see any mention of anything like this.

Mar 30, 2011about 6 months ago I installed Ubuntu because my Windows XP had been partially corrupted and was screwing up. One month ago I formated the drive XP was on and installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit on it; I couldn't dual boot so I looked online, found EasyBCD 2.0, installed it, and from what I can tell, I need GRUB on my Ubuntu side to be able to boot it, before this I didn't even know what GRUB was.

Feb 25, 2010One of my objections is the "recently installed" list at the top of the menu (I use the CLASSIC one-column style as opposed to the box version with multiple "tabs"). I often install 5-10 or more applications at one time and do NOT want a long list of programs popping up. Is there any way to at least clear this list? Disabling it would be even better, if anyone can tell me how to do that.While I have other aesthetic complaints, I have seen at least partial solutions to some of my other ones but this one I haven't seen anywhere.I have read it only stays there for a few days, but it is still annoying to have that long list. Also, if I ever set a friend up with our favorite OS they would have a list of around 50 programs sitting there and that looks really cluttered.

Jul 22, 2010I have just installed Debian Lenny and was trying to upgrade the installed packages from the packages.debian.org site. when i asked synaptic to add the downloaded packages the would not appear, but when i checked the .xsessions file there are entries saying that the packages were being ingnored because they were either different versions, the MD5 did not match or even "can't find pkg". i have to use the local library to download the packages because i dont have an internet connection at home.

Ubuntu :: All Packages Not Installed After Upgrade
Dec 13, 2010I have been running Ubuntu on my laptop since 9.10 by itself (not dualbooting Windows). I had no problems with it back then but I did notice that when I upgraded, not all the packages installed and I would get an error message saying so. I never thought much of it. The problem became apparent when upgrading from 9.10 to 10.4, I would get an error message everytime and the upgrade would be cancelled. This forced me to reinstall Ubuntu for both 10.04 and 10.10. As soon as I downloaded 10.10 I downloaded docky and chromium. Heres where my current problems arise:
- Docky (which worked in 10.04) wont work even after I download compiz.
- Every time I update the system, if i try to update chromium or anything else from google it cancels the upgrade.
- I tried using "sudo apt-get upgrade" in the terminal but I get
"Reading package lists... Error!
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened."

I am however, running several packages from PPA's that were simply not working well at the versions included with 9.10 (I know specifically the 64-bit version of Flash and Wine are setup this way).
Since these installs are out of the scope of the official Ubuntu sources, how are these handled when I upgrade? More importantly, since some of these packages were just installed as a temporary fix until 10.04 came out, for some of them I'd like to remove the PPA version and reinstall the default version (since for several of them the 10.04 version has caught up to where it needs to be). Is there any way to identify all packages installed from PPA's on the system?

Apr 2, 2010I was curious if there is any way to clone my system by simply writing into a file which packages are installed AND deinstalled on the source system.
The reason is that I configured a system which fits me just right (I installed some additional packages and removed some standard packages like OpenOffice...) and was wanting to back it up - even for a newer Ubuntu-Version.
Most of the changes are already gone in /var/log/dpkg.log... so this option does not exist...Does anyone know where Synaptic stores the information which package is installed and which is not? It is possible to view those packages by applying a filter.

Apr 8, 2010I'm reinstalling an ubuntu machine that does not boot anymore. I have a complete backup of all the files that were on the harddrive.
I would like to make a list of all the programs that were installed, so I can re-install them on the fresh install.
I've found the following procedure, but this method requires that the machine still boots. (and my machine does not boot anymore) code...
Is it possible to get a list of installed packages from the backup of an ubuntu machine?

May 25, 2010Since I had problems with Openoffice since the upgrade to 9.10, I've tried to uninstall all openoffice. I've searched for 'openoffice' in synaptic and uninstalled all thet I've found. It has uninstalled many other things, thunderbird, firefox and god only knows what other. Now, there is a way to know what are the packages installed by default? Or, to install all the dafault packages? Or, there is a log of what I've uninstalled?
