Ubuntu :: Any Way To Use Dpkg To Rollback Recently Installed Packages?
May 30, 2010
Using Ubuntu Lucid with Gnome desktop.I was just playing around trying to find a media player I liked and installed Bangarang via the Software Centre. This took an absolute age and now I realise why - it has basically installed the entire KDE environment and associated lib packages as well.I have found /var/ log/ dpkg.log shows what has been installed and of course I can wade through that to make a list of all the packages and uninstall them all via Synaptic. But that will take a long time to do.
Is there anyway to somehow automate rolling back any package changes since a certain time?I've checked the man for dpkg and I can't see any mention of anything like this.

Is there a way to rollback the packages installed in the last software update?I cannot reach the gui login screen (x-server) ever since my last software update.Hence cannot login.Too bad the old xserver restart key (crtl+alt+bkspace) dont work anymore. Also, I dont remember the command to view the system logs to know what went wrong.

Is there a way to see the packages that I have recently installed? I'm trying to remove a program and I'm not sure what the names of the packages that came with it are.

I'd like to list all packages I installed since the installation. The tricky part is that I don't care for dependencies - only clean list of what I ordered to install. I went through man pages and I did not find anything relevant. Also /var/log/apt/history* doesn't say what I requested and what came as a dependency.
For gentoo-aware folks, I am looking for something like "world" file.

way to have apt or dpkg print out a list of all the installed packages? Preferably in a format that I can simply add 'apt-get install' in front of.

I need to re-install Etch recently but forgot to backup /var/lib/dpkg folder, I know there's archive server provides old packages, but packages from www.debian-multimedia.org does not. I have tried its mirror sites but it seems they had removed the old packages from Etch and earlier releases.

Is there a way using dpkg or apt-get to segregate user application packages from system packages? What I envision is an /apps directory structure that can be the install target for selected packages so not to "clutter" the storage areas for the system administration files/packages - maybe even with permissions set so that (a GROUP of) users could install packages on an Ubuntu server w/o SysAdmin guidance. This could also allow 1)system upgrades with or w/o including these packages, and 2)the sharing of /apps (via NFS) among common Ubuntu systems. Is this doable using the dpkg or apt maintenance tools?

about 6 months ago I installed Ubuntu because my Windows XP had been partially corrupted and was screwing up. One month ago I formated the drive XP was on and installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit on it; I couldn't dual boot so I looked online, found EasyBCD 2.0, installed it, and from what I can tell, I need GRUB on my Ubuntu side to be able to boot it, before this I didn't even know what GRUB was.

Recently I have installed DockbarX and Cardapio. After installation they are supposed to be found in the Add to Panel items, but both of them are not there.I can run them directly without any problem. Is there anything else I should do manually? I have tried pkill gnome-panel to restart the panel as well.

I want to remove Evolution and install Thunderbird. I have a general question. WRT any given package, how can I determine if that package is required by any other packages so that I wouldn't want to remove it?

I'm attempting to install Debian (Stable) from a business net install disc. The problem? I can't load/install the packages I need to connect to my USB 3G modem. When I load up a shell (tty2?), I'm brought to an 'ash' prompt, and there's no DPKG for me to load the necessary packages.
how I can do a total net install, including the base, from an USB 3G modem? Actually, I'm very surprised that current Linux distros don't seem to include support, for this growing market share type of internet connection.

Today I was trying to clean up my system and am a little bit stumped on something.
I used synaptic to clean up installed kernels, except for the one that was currently running. Once done I went ahead and restarted my computer.
Grub lists only one kernel available. However when I go to a prompt and
issue dpkg --list|grep linux-image I get several items listed code...
2.6.32-22-generic is the kernel I am running so I assume the "ii" files have something to do with the kernel in memory.
However, what are the "rc" files that are listed? Resource files? All three kernels referenced have been removed a LONG time ago and when I look for installed headers, or anything else, there is nothing installed for *-12, *-12 or *-14.
And when I check Synaptic for just the kernel number I get a list of packages with no version install, no latest version notation and no description (attached screenshot).
Just what are those references and how does one remove them?

I have downloaded a Non-free Deb pkg, when I tried to install it using "# dpkg -i pkgname", it appeared to install as expected. The pkg exists, I found the new directory and the executable file, but if I try to run it I get kicked out of my session, and back to GDM.
When I run "# dpkg -l pkgname", immediately after the install, I get this: "un pkgname <none> (no description available)"
Since it is not installed I can not remove it, or reconfigure it.
I run Debian Testing with Openbox as my window manager.

I'd like to clean up apt/dpkg so that it doesn't think the package whose files I've deleted is still installed, but when I run:
Code:
apt-get remove --purge linux-image-2.6.32-2.slh.4
I get the following:
Code:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package linux-image-2.6.32-2.slh.4
The package does show up in the list when I run the command:
Code:
dpkg -l "linux-image*"
with "ii" in the 1st column, whatever that means. Should I just rm the matching files in /var/lib/dpkg/info?

One of my objections is the "recently installed" list at the top of the menu (I use the CLASSIC one-column style as opposed to the box version with multiple "tabs"). I often install 5-10 or more applications at one time and do NOT want a long list of programs popping up. Is there any way to at least clear this list? Disabling it would be even better, if anyone can tell me how to do that. While I have other aesthetic complaints, I have seen at least partial solutions to some of my other ones but this one I haven't seen anywhere.I have read it only stays there for a few days, but it is still annoying to have that long list. Also, if I ever set a friend up with our favorite OS they would have a list of around 50 programs sitting there and that looks really cluttered.

I installed the software Ubuntu Tweak yesterday and I was satisfied of how it worked. today, surfing the internet I was hoping to find a solution to a couple of problems that I have: the computer sometimes get stuck when opening videos or photos - I can't see streaming TV. when the internet browser was asking me to install plug-in in order to show the videos I tried to install them but errors occurred.
so I followed the instruction in [URL] (many of these things didn't work and the terminal was showing error messages...) now after rebooting I have got the unity 2D I think (which is fine as I can't notice great differences) but I can't install the updates from Ubuntu Tweak the error message is: E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, please report. how can I fix it and get my video codecds?
