Ubuntu :: Booting Into Normal Mode Results In Endless Hang

Feb 3, 2010

When I boot into recovery mode I get fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16 /dev/sda1: clean, 148044/217728 files, 630631/869510 blocks. And then it stops. Booting into normal mode results in an endless hang. I'm not sure what the error means, or how to fix it.I'm running Ubuntu Netbook Remix on a Dell Mini 9.

Ubuntu :: Nothing Booting - Install Updates Seemed To Hang

Apr 15, 2011

I did a normal Install Updates this morning, but it seemed to hang. Furthermore, after hanging, when I tried to save files it wouldn't let me, saying either the drive was unavailable for writing or write protected or something. Well since I had a Restart Required message, I figured this would be a good time for a restart. It ended up booting me right into BusyBox v1.13.3 after telling me Target file system doesn't have /sbin/init/ and No init found. Try passing init= bootarg followed by a (initramfs) prompt.

I've gathered to mean that my hard drive isn't being mounted; most solutions to this begin with booting from a Live CD. However, I made a Live CD with a USB stick, but when I try to boot from there, the splash screen pops up with the red/white dots moving around, but doesn't continue loading. Pressing an arrow button lets me see the messages "can't open /dev/sr0: No medium found" and "unable to open /dev/sda". If I try going into grub, I'll select one of over a dozen Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-xx-generic options (with and without recovery mode), but again, those end up just kicking me to BusyBox again.

Ubuntu Installation :: Get UNR 10.4 To Default To FailsafeX In Normal Mode?

Aug 15, 2010

I've installed UNR 10.04 on an old UMPC. Graphics are a total mess, even console text doesn't display properly. All I get is a bunch of pixels, smeared across the screen. I'd blame KMS, but that's only supposed to affect X. Anyway, according to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting/, "KMS is enabled by default for the -intel, -ati, and -nouveau drivers. It is not available for any other drivers". Mine isn't any of those, so KMS shouldn't be enabled at all. I've found that failsafeX in a recovery console works OK. My question is, how can I get UNR 10.4 to default to failsafeX in normal mode?

I'm posting this in the "General Help" category, because it doesn't really fit in another one. Feel free to move this thread, if it's the wrong place. I'm having a problem with my Linux. Since today, my Kubuntu 10.10 (running on an Dell XPS M1530) doesn't but anymore.
Neither normal, nor recovery-mode is working. I also tried out different kernels in the grub-menu without any success. The boot-process stops at:

Code:

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Crashes When Booting Normal?

Jun 3, 2010

I have recently installed openSUSE 11.2 on a dell d620. When ever I boot to the default, X seems to freeze and linux crashes. I cannot even hit Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get to the terminal shell.

When it happens, the windows in the bottom turn to a yellow tint color. The windows also become unreadable. The mouse seems to move. I can click the windows, but they are slow to respond and don't seem to correct themselves. When I press Ctrl+Alt+F1 is when the sytem becomes unresponsive and I have to power it off by holding the power button.

When I boot to Failsafe, this problem doesn't seem to occur. Is there a problem booting to Failsafe? What do I lose by doing this?

nVidia Quadro NVS 110M/GeForce Go 7300 Gfxcard and installed the x11-video-nvidiaG02 and nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-desktop packages for my 2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop kernel.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Experimental Nvidia Working In Recovery Mode But Not After Normal Boot

Jun 28, 2011

I tried to make Compiz work using the experimental 3D support of the free Nvidia driver, because I am suffering from a bug in the proprietary driver (click here for launchpad entry). The free driver I mean is the one that shows up as "Experimental 3D support for NVIDIA cards" in the "Additional Drivers" manager (note: for some reason, this option will only present itself when no proprietary driver is currently active).

Now the strange thing is: the driver does not provide 3d support, and behaves generally awful (lots of glitches and so on) when I boot my system normally. But when instead I boot from the grub menu into recovery mode, then select "failsafe graphics", and then select "restart X", the whole thing works perfectly! So now I am running the experimental 3d driver, I have compositing working, 3d animations on docky. Somehow, the failsafe boot sequence does something right that my normal boot sequence does not. When I reboot in normal mode, everything is screwed up again.

I have no idea what statistics about my system I should include here, because I really have no idea what could possibly be wrong. I am running 32bits Natty in Classic mode, on an Ahtlon Dual Core 4850e machine, with a GeForce 6150 LE graphics card. These are the normal and recovery entries in my grub.cfg:

Code:

menuentry 'Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.38-8-generic-pae' --class ubuntu --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os {
recordfail
set gfxpayload=$linux_gfx_mode
insmod part_msdos

Fedora Installation :: Error: Idle With IF=0" But Everything Ended Up Booting Normal

Jun 29, 2010

I just read through the Lifehacker article on how to create a Linux boot from USB and thought it would be a good idea for when I want to use a light system on my netbook. Anyways, I encountered some problems when trying to boot the first time on my netbook. I got an error before it was loading up "Error: idle with IF=0" but everything ended up booting normal; however, I couldn't find my wireless connection.

Well, then I decided to boot up my other laptop with it and then was going to install the OS to my external hard drive; however, it never did find any storage devices (after I let it sit and load for about 10 minutes). My last question/issue is wondering if I can install it to my main hard drive and boot either WIndows XP/7 or Fedora instead of just one or the other. FYI, I was running the boot from a 4gb USB drive.

Ubuntu :: Booting Into Terminal Mode

Jun 11, 2010

The installation was not successful and it gave an error that there are some broken packages. I ignored that warning and shutdown the system. When i tried to boot again after some time, it took me to a terminal instead of login screen.

I tried to recover the system using "report broken packages" option from recovery mode. I could able to delete all the broken packages. After removing all the broken packages, i tried to install nvidia drivers using command "apt-get install nvidia-glx-190".

Ubuntu :: Is Possible Booting Directly Into Failsafe Mode

Nov 26, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a machine with a dodgey graphics card. This machine will break on normal graphics mode but run fine in failsafe graphics mode. I need this machine to be able to be controlled remotely and this is where the problem comes in.

If this machine is being controlled remotely, it may need to be rebooted remotely. Rebooting it into failsafe mode at the moment consists of two prompts: one to put it into failsafe, and the other to "keep it for one session". Does anyone know how to reconfigure Grub or whatever else so it will automatically go into Failsafe Graphics mode without any user interaction? (BTW, where it asked me to "keep for one session" or "reconfigure now", I clicked reconfigure and it didn't do anything. So I need to do it manually)
