how do I make grub boot to allow me to choose, like safe mode and normal mode and all that second, how do I do automated back ups (preferably using file copy) for something like every sunday at 11:00 am using the command line, i use to know but forgot.
View 1 RepliesI attempted to install Catalyst 10.11 for my ATI HD 2600XT and the system now only displays lines and a large block of pixels where the mouse would go. CTRL-ALT-F1 kills the system and does not provide a command prompt. This is a single installation, not dual-boot, but there is no Press Esc to access the Grub menu during startup so I cannot choose safe mode. I attempted to get into Recovery mode using the flash drive that I used to install the system and it tells me there is no Recovery kernel (I used the 64-bit Desktop installer, not alternative). Does anyone know an alternative to get into the Grub menu other than ESC during bootup? Alternatively, do I need to download the 64-bit Alternative ISO and create a new boot disk with it so I can access Recovery mode? Is there something else I'm not thinking of?
View 5 Replies View RelatedRecently I installed ubuntu aoongside windows 7 in dual boot and everything seems ok. however, i wanted to boot into windows safe mode to resolve a possible driver issue there. problem is, grub menu shows the the normal windows boot option but not the windows safe mode boot option. but i know the boot option exists because it booted once when i accidently shut down windows incorrectly or something and restarted it.
so, how do i boot into windows safe mode?
I accidentally chose the "recovery mode" and now i dont know what to do. What commands i have to enter to go back to normal ubuntu mode with graphic etc?

where do i go to find out what the problem is regarding the normal boot mode? i think my pc is starting to resent the continual use of the reset button!
First let me say sorry if this is in the wrong thread. I am a bit of a noob when it comes to linux. I was trying to figure out how to get an external monitor as my primary monitor on my laptop when i made a change that cause the desktop environment to keep logging me out. I got it into safe mode and resolved the issue but i have my account set to not ask for a password on login and it keeps booting to safe mode now. I have tried logging out and typing my username to get the option to select the normal desktop but as soon as i enter my username it boots bake in as safe mode. The option to require a password on login is not working in this mode. Anyone know how I can get this corrected?

View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter I upgraded to 11.04 I now can only boot in safe mode. When I boot up in regular mode everything on the desktop is showing but I cant open anything. When I try to boot up in the classic mode, which is what I prefer, I just get my wallpaper on my desktop but no icons or anything. I didn't mind the safe mode at first but I now realise I cant install any updates which isn't good. I have 222 updates that need installed.

Now that i have ubuntu how can i boot into vista's safe mode with networking? I tried F8 at start up but it brings me up to a boot device screen. The windows boot loader has been replaced by GRUB so now i can's select safe mode with networking. The only other option i tired is to go to msconfig and change it to safe boot but theres no option for safe mode with networking.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy friend asked me to look at their laptop as it was not booting up. I checked it and found that you could not even boot into safe mode. I have used a windows boot disk to try and sort any issues but this has not worked. The problem is he never made the recovery disks by the manufacturer so I cant reinstall windows. I can access all the files on the hard drive when running Ubuntu. So what I need to know is it possible to run the manufacturers program to make the recovery disks from Ubuntu.

Shut down the machine yesterday, got an error booting today. Since I'm new to Ubuntu (been using it for about a month now), I don't know what logs to check, what utilities to run, where to find bootup error message so I can copy here. I am now using it in recovery/low-graphics mode.
View 3 Replies View RelatedJust a little disappointed. I downloaded the 11.4 Gnome by about midnight, checked the CD for integrity,and started the Live CD, and it worked quite well. Installed it, but troubles started. OpenSuse 11.4 won't boot up in the normal mode, but would boot up in the safe mode only. I am now writing from the safe mode, but would like to boot up normally. It get stuck after the first verbose page. And not a move from there. The laptop is Lenovo T400, Core2Duo with 4GB RAM, screen 1440x900. No problem with any other distros up to now.

A little while ago i bought a magazine with the openSUSE 11.1 distro on it but couldn't install it so i gave up. I am attempting to have another go. The problem is that the os will work fine when booted from CD in fail safe mode and can be installed from there but when out of fail safe mode the system begins to boot but freezes and will do nothing more.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI tried to make Compiz work using the experimental 3D support of the free Nvidia driver, because I am suffering from a bug in the proprietary driver (click here for launchpad entry). The free driver I mean is the one that shows up as "Experimental 3D support for NVIDIA cards" in the "Additional Drivers" manager (note: for some reason, this option will only present itself when no proprietary driver is currently active).
Now the strange thing is: the driver does not provide 3d support, and behaves generally awful (lots of glitches and so on) when I boot my system normally. But when instead I boot from the grub menu into recovery mode, then select "failsafe graphics", and then select "restart X", the whole thing works perfectly! So now I am running the experimental 3d driver, I have compositing working, 3d animations on docky. Somehow, the failsafe boot sequence does something right that my normal boot sequence does not. When I reboot in normal mode, everything is screwed up again.
I have no idea what statistics about my system I should include here, because I really have no idea what could possibly be wrong. I am running 32bits Natty in Classic mode, on an Ahtlon Dual Core 4850e machine, with a GeForce 6150 LE graphics card. These are the normal and recovery entries in my grub.cfg:

I updated yesterday and now when I start my laptop it goes in to grub rescue mode. I have booted from a 'live cd' and thought I could repair grub from there. In gparted however the partition with ubuntu (sda1) is seen as unknown file system, in terminal when I list the partition table it shows up as FAT16 type. I started a thread over in installations and upgrades in which I was trying to upgrade from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 using the upgrade manager. My computer froze in the middle of the process, requiring me to restart my computer. When I try rebooting Ubuntu, I get an error message "The configuration defaults for Gnome power manager have not been installed correctly" and then a blank screen. No mouse pointer, no cursor. It will not take me to the Ubuntu desktop screen. I've already found the sudo commands I can run to try and fix Ubuntu. They are as follows:
sudo apt-get clean (If the problem is not having enough free hard drive space)
sudo dpkg --configure -a (If the problem deals with the upgrade installation process)
However, what I can't get is the terminal to come up to run these commands. In the other thread I started, someone mentioned that in the Grub menu, you can choose "recovery mode", hit "enter" to boot it, and it will give you a menu of options to choose from. However, when I choose "recovery mode" and hit "enter", I do not get a menu but instead 3 pages of data about my computer that ends with this:

It gives me a blinking cursor at the very end but I cannot type anything and I cannot page up to see the 3 pages of data. What I am looking for is a way to get to the recovery mode menu OR somehow open up a terminal so I can run the sudo commands. My computer automatically logs me in, so I do not get a login screen and Ctrl+Alt+F1 does not work for me. Anyone know how I can open a terminal with only access to the Grub menu? Perhaps a BASH command that I can use in the command line that will open up a terminal? To summarize: My computer does not boot Ubuntu. I get an error message followed by a blank screen. It does not go into the desktop screen so I cannot choose Applications->Accessories->Terminal.
My Grub menu consists of Ubuntu and it's version, Ubuntu and it's version with recovery mode, memtest, and Windows XP (I have a dual boot system). In the Grub menu, I can select "e" for edit, "c" for command line and "enter" to boot either regular Ubuntu OS or Ubuntu recovery mode. "Sudo" commands are not recognize if I choose the command line for either Ubuntu OS or recovery mode. I have a Live CD for 10.04 but you cannot run sudo commands because you do not have access to root on the Live CD.
I upgraded my video card today on my dual booting windows 7 ult. x64 machine. I tried to go into safe mode to clean the old drivers out with Driver Sweeper, but when I boot I get a menu asking me which disk I want to boot from (Asus motherboard P5Q <green>) and I have gotten this before and I usuall just hit esc to use default drive and start pressing F8 repeatedly but it just goes to GRUB dual boot menu and there's no safe mode for windows listed. I also tried pressing F5 as that used to be the safe mode command, but it does nothing and goes straight to GRUB.

I did a clean install of 10.10 on my Asus A6R laptop today. Previously i had 10.04 on it.
After installation and the first reboot my GNOME won't start in normal session. If I select Ubuntu Desktop Edition (safe mode) everything works fine, but on the normal Ubuntu Desktop Edition session, GNOME just won't start. I have a mouse cursor that i can move around and a normal background. Also i can hear the usual startup sound.
I really need to open Firefox in Safe Mode as I have installed foxyproxy and it's gone wrong! and it won't let firefox open, so i need to open it in safe mode, how would i go about doing that?
