I did a normal Install Updates this morning, but it seemed to hang. Furthermore, after hanging, when I tried to save files it wouldn't let me, saying either the drive was unavailable for writing or write protected or something. Well since I had a Restart Required message, I figured this would be a good time for a restart. It ended up booting me right into BusyBox v1.13.3 after telling me Target file system doesn't have /sbin/init/ and No init found. Try passing init= bootarg followed by a (initramfs) prompt.
I've gathered to mean that my hard drive isn't being mounted; most solutions to this begin with booting from a Live CD. However, I made a Live CD with a USB stick, but when I try to boot from there, the splash screen pops up with the red/white dots moving around, but doesn't continue loading. Pressing an arrow button lets me see the messages "can't open /dev/sr0: No medium found" and "unable to open /dev/sda". If I try going into grub, I'll select one of over a dozen Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-xx-generic options (with and without recovery mode), but again, those end up just kicking me to BusyBox again.

When I boot into recovery mode I get fsck from util-linux-ng 2.16 /dev/sda1: clean, 148044/217728 files, 630631/869510 blocks. And then it stops. Booting into normal mode results in an endless hang. I'm not sure what the error means, or how to fix it.I'm running Ubuntu Netbook Remix on a Dell Mini 9.

i decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup, when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because, again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.
Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then, instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing, once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup, then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process, once i finished i continued to the next part, the installation, but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data, after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.
When it tried to boot, appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line, since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]

I've been searching the forums for any posts that cover my problem, but most of the booting problems I've found are different from mine.Anywho, the situation:ell laptop, 2 partitions, first is Windows XP, second is Ubuntu Karmic.Whenever I turn on my computer the first loading screen that shows up (is this the BIOS? Excuse my little knowledge of this stuff), before GRUB loads, is really slow. It takes about a minute to load. However, whenever I restart from my XP partition, it suddenly loads fast! And this does not happen when restarting from my Ubuntu partition or anything

I am using a linux kernel 2.6.36 using mips architecture. I have succesfully booted the machine through Flash memory, but it is not booting through nfs. It is getting stuck at the stage where the image starts loading. In short the vmlinux.img file is being copied properly to nfsroot but the image is not loading.

I've had this bug on pretty much all Linux distro's I've tried in the last few months, but because I love Ubuntu and I can't seem to find this bug reproduced anywhere (though I'm not sure it's a bug worth reporting if it's just me) I decided to bring it here: Whenever a program that is not resource intensive (for example, Update Manager while it's downloading packages) is running for around 20 seconds, and I am not typing or moving my mouse, the system will hang. It will sit there for hours on end unless I move the mouse or hit a key.
Worse yet, it will hang on boot and shutdown too. I often have to hit a key to get the hard drive to start reading again and for anything else to happen for that matter. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 on a relatively new laptop, but like I said before, it's happened on a bunch of distros: Debian, openSUSE, Fedora... I just have no idea what could be causing it at this point.

I am using Rhythmbox 0.12.8 on Lucid 64-bit. In the "Your Downloads" window, it shows many of the tracks with "0MB downloaded" and one with "Queued", and doesn't really seem to be showing any progress.
addition 1: I completely shutdown RB, opened Ubuntu One from the MY Menu and placed a check mark in the "file synchronization" box. It seems to be working now. I had forgotten I turned off the file synchronization.

I'm trying to install 10.04 LTS and everything goes great until I get to step 2 of 7 after clicking my time zone it just hangs up. I had no problems installing using the same live disk earlier today on another cpu, I even tried another image to see if that was the problem. Installing 11.04 goes great too on the same cpu.Edit: I should of mentioned this earlier, but I also can run directly from the cd. The only issue is when I try to install it.

My problem is that my server randomly hangs. If I remember right it started after an kernel update (can't really remember if it was a kernel update specific, but I did install new updates before this problem occurred), and then I noticed my server was down one day, after that the problems/random freezes continued. And there are no pattern/interval between the freeze ups.
I think that all this started for about 3 weeks ago, so I've never had this problem with Ubuntu 10.04 before.
At first, I thought the source to my problem was an old IDE which I accidentally left in when installing Ubuntu at the first time, so GRUB was sitting on that one. So I backed up almost all of my data, reinstalled Ubuntu 10.04 (downloaded from the website) but this time without the old IDE drive. Everything seemed to work, had no crashes or freezes. I do have to mention that the same thing happend to the live CD before I removed the old IDE.
But now the fresh install of Ubuntu seems to hang too. And the worst part of this is that I can't really do anything about it to test or look up what may cause the problem, as I have to access it remotely because I'm on vacation right now (I'll have to get my friend over there and restart it).
When the computer hangs it comes inaccessible from the network, can't even see that it is up in my router. But I do know it is running, else it would have been shut off and then started up again and work.
Before I re-installed it, this problem could be reproduced by surfing the web and watching flash videos in either chromium or Firefox.
And I do know it sounds silly to run a server with the desktop edition installed, but if I don't have any other computer accessible, I use my server instead.
My server specs:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.5 GHz
GFX: XFX Nvidia Geforce 8600GT
Mobo: EVGA 750i FTW
RAM: Corsair Dominator 2GB
HDD: Western Digital 500 GB
I also have no special effects nor do I use any proprietary drivers (I did before I re-installed).
Any ideas of what it might be? Is it a bug which came with the updates, like a bug in the kernel?
I've noticed that there actually are alot of threads like mine around here, but none have provided a working solution.

Upgraded dual boot XP / Ubuntu 2.6.31-22 (still works) to 2.6.32-22, which hangs on boot. "2.6.32-22 recovery mode"(and "continue" dies at "Checking battery state". Ctrl Alt F3 gets a prompt and the login works.
The machine is a Thinkpad g40, which has worked on 9.10, except for wireless distance issues (the G40 has the Atheros AR5211, which seems to be a problem, at least per the forums, and my distance limits experience)
I get the same mount and chroot messages, followed by scrolling msgs, and then a blank screen on attempting to boot 2.6.32-22. And, as indicated, 2.6.31-22 boots and the apps I checked work fine. On the upgrade, there were several msgs about non supported apps and a grub question, which I (naively) answered as use the package version (and was somewhat surprised when dual boot still worked - but impressed and happy
I cloned my hard drive prior to the upgrade, so can revert to 9.10, but would like to run 10.04 LTS. Any suggestions. or should I wait for a while to upgrade?

Somehow and I'm not sure how. But opengl apps will completely hang Ubuntu 10.10 x64.This is my 2nd fresh install. I'm using the latest nvidia driver for my asus gtx460 (260.19.12)Have already verified rendering is enabled, uninstalled nouveau & blacklisted, mesa glx is installed, no errors (that I can see), etc. When I run apps, even a gl screensaver, it will hang my whole box. To the point where I can't even, ctrl + alt + F1 (or F2, F3), for cli. So no command line output. And I've tested this in World of Padman, Alien Arena, Call of Duty 4 (under Wine), even Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Apps will start, but any gl content will quickly hang. This is the first time running ubuntu x64, and a new box

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on a Lenovo Thinkpad T61p with 2GB RAM. When I was on Ubuntu 10.04, one day suddenly Azureus hung at the 'loading plugin' screen as it begins. I had to hard reboot my system and it(Azureus) never worked after that so I removed it. Then after a couple of months same thing happened with Adobe Acrobat reader. As soon as I opened any pdf and started to scroll, it hung. System didn't respond and had to hard reboot. I moved to foxit reader Then I upgraded to 10.10 and now mplayer hangs occasionally if I try to switch it to full screen. System stops responding totallyn Where to begin debugging from ? I can't figure out any pattern or any way to reproduce it. I haven't tried Acrobat reader and Azureus on 10.10

I'm having a new issue with my Ubuntu 10.10 box. I've been trying to fix it for the past couple of weeks but have been unable to find any thread anywhere that closely resembles my problem. The computer seems to run very well most of the time with no indication of anything being wrong. I have a dual display setup where one monitor exclusively runs XBMC. Every 24-48 hours or so, I'll experience a hard crash.
Usually at night while I"m sleeping, so it's been very difficult to pin point the exact time of the failure. Both displays are off (as if not receiving any signal), however the computer is still powered on. I've tried SSH'ing to the computer with no success, and other processes that I'm usually able to access off of my LAN (SABnzb, etc..) I can no longer connect to. Is there a log file I Should be looking at to try and determine the cause of the crash?

I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed on a gateway desktop. I installed 10.04 in april of 2010. Its fully updated. About two week ago it would hang on shut down. The ubuntu logo would stay lite, the keyboard and mouse shut down, it sounds like the harddrive is shut down but the power light and the fans still run requiring a hard shut down. I used the terminal to do the shut down same problem. I reinstalled ubuntu no change, I tried ubuntu 1010 no change. I have XP windows on a second hard drive it shut down normal. I installed pc linos it shut down normal. I've check for bug reports and there is indication of other similar problems relating to open office. I sudo uninstalled open office, still same issue. I did install a astronomy program which I removed because it ran slugish but I would think that would be totally removed when I reinstalled ubuntu. Is there a specific log I should check that may give an answer.

This code is meant to retrieve ascii from a temperature sensor in the fridge, check that it is not the error code (85 degrees) and append it to a csv file. If the reading is 85 degrees, then either my fridge is on fire or the sensor cocked up, in which case it is meant to try again. It's the last bit that I can't get to work.

I have 2 NVidia graphics cards, a GTX275 and a GT210. My system boots just fine in 32-bit Windows 7, so I know it isn't a hardware problem.Linux boots fine with either the GTX275 or the GT210 installed, but hangs after the file system check if both are installed. My motherboard has 3 pci-e slots, an x1, x4, and an x16. I've tried various configurations, all fail except 1 graphics card installed in either of these slots. I got my system to boot a couple of times with both cards installed in Xbuntu 9.10. Then this problem randomly happened.
System Specs:
Ubuntu 10.04 Beta, 2.6.32-16 Kernel
MSI N275GTX Twin-Frozr 896MB
MSI N210GT 512MB (got it for VDPAU on an HDTV )[code].....
I'm not inclined to believe the problem is here. I don't even get a bootsplash, let alone XServer to start. The system hangs after a flurry of HDD activity. Checked partition, and it's ok.
/var/log/boot.log
Code:
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2
/sbin/fsck.xfs: XFS file system.
