Software :: Proftpd - 530 Login Error When Logging In Normal Mode - Root ?
Jun 8, 2010
I've been installing proftpd on a server running fedora 8. It is setup in standalone server type, and I checked that the process is running and listening to port 21.
When I try to login using a ftp client in Normal mode with root user & password , I receive first a 220, then a 530 login incorrect error.
Can you help me?
I've been pasting my proftpd.conf configuration file below

i have to reinstall my pc with a testing version. The installation almost is the same as stable version (lenny). But, the problem is that, i can't login it after the installation completed. The new user i created during installation is invalid! So, i have to enter the single user mode, to my surprise, the new user(i created before) doesn't exist! So, i add a user here. But, i still can't login to my system as the normal mode. How should i resolve such a problem?

What are the differences between "su -" in a GUI terminal and directly logging in as root in a text mode terminal (tty1-tty6)? Any environment, path or other functionality differences?

Cannot exec /usr/libexec/openssh/sftp-server: File or directory doesn't exist
(Translateted from my nativ language)
I think that is my bad shell configuration so I check file /etc/ssh/sshd_config and see in the end (this lines couse this bug):

i am looking for a detailed description of the login process for both root and normal user , also locally and remotely.i read some sentences that the files .bashrc and bash_profile are needed for this process. But that was very concise.

I was reading /usr/share/kde4/config/kdm/kdmrc and see this 3 lines:
# Allow root logins?
# Default is false
#AllowRootLogin=false
this doesn't mean that root can't login in a graphical mode? (I can login as root)

I have multiple computers set up in my home (self education on networking) with one used as the main machine, and the others set up as a variety of server types. The main machine is running Lucid, as gui based os. The others are all running the server version. NO Domain controller is installed, no DNS server is installed.
ALL of the server machines boot to a login prompt, allow user name and password entry, and then will fail to login with a timeout error. After anywhere from 8-15 tries, the login will eventually succeed. Error also occurs when logging in via ssh.

My X server restarts as soon as I log in as a regular user. Root user has access. I can log in both root and normal user in terminal and over SSH. I tried rebuilding and installing the proprietary NVIDIA driver, as it builds it's own config file for X. I've had no previous problems with X on this system. The last major change to the system before the last log out was the installation of MCNP5. MCNP5 was installed under the regular user; no root privledges were needed.

I was trying to edit a file requiring root permissions, so I used sudo. I typed the root password and it failed. This happened three times, and the process was ended. I then logged in as root (su) and was able to navigate to the file and make changes as root. Am I missing something? How would I edit the sudoers file such that this password would work? Or is there another way to log in to the sudo group to make these changes? How do I set sudo passwords?

I run ProFTPd with TLS authentication on my Debian Lenny server. My problem is that despite of the fact that my users connect chrooted, one of my friends had root privileges after logging in form a Macintosh and could browse the root directory, too.

I just completed a fresh install of the weekly jessie build (downloaded today). All I've done is install updates, add my username to sudoer list, and reboot. When I did, the xfce panel was not there. When I right clicked, Apps, Panel, it opened with an error that I cannot make changes unless I save my session and that it's in kiosk mode. After a logoff or reboot, it's still not there. I saw one thread asked for the output of /.xsession-errors, which I've done, and it doesn't look good... I'm just not sure how to fix:
Code: Select allopenConnection: connect: No such file or directory
cannot connect to brltty at :0
/usr/bin/x-session-manager: X server already running on display :0
xfce4-session-Message: ssh-agent is already running; starting gpg-agent without ssh support
(xfce4-panel:896): xfce4-panel-CRITICAL **: panel-window.c:2698 (panel_window_thaw_autohide): expression 'window->autohide_block > 0' failed.
(process:1035): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion 'sys_page_size == 0' failed
tpatt@debian:~$
Like I said I've made no changes other than updates and installing sudo.

So, I wanted a master ftp user that could access all the folders for all the users. I did this by creating a second root user. I'm aware of all the security considerations, and if there's a better way to do this than creating a root user I'd really like to know it. That said, my issue is that my new root user is still unable in FTP to access folders owned by other users that aren't world readable. Note that this is ONLY when logging in via ftp. If I login through SSH I can access all folders without problem and without the need to sudo. So this is a true root user. Does anyone have an idea how I can fix the proftpd configuration to allow my root user access to ALL folders no matter the owner?

I cant figure out why my server running fc14 keeps saying login incorrect 530. I am using gproftpd. I know that the login is correct though. For instance:
Lets say my user is "goober" and my pass is "fedora" and I go and type that in when I try and login to the ftp it says login incorrect.

I'm having quite a hassle getting proftpd to work.
My setup:
- CentOS 5 (latest version)
- ProFTPD Version: 1.3.1 (stable)
Want do I want:
A simple FTP server which allows me to acces the /var/www/html directory to upload new files for my apache webserver.
What are my problems:
When trying to login it says the following:
***Begin***
[root@ICT2-Gateway ~]# ftp 127.0.0.1
Connected to 127.0.0.1.
220 FTP Server ready.
500 AUTH not understood
[Code]....
As you can see this has nothing to do with faulty firewall settings since i'm only trying this locally. Futhermore the password is 100% correct (and keyboard layout).
Since I've changed alot in my config file it thought it's not worth mentioning here, I'm reverting back to default.

I'm trying to set up ftp server in the most simple way possible - login to home directories for existing linux users (except root). I get "Login incorrect" when I try to authenticate, although I am sure it is the right user-password (I even changed it using passwd on server's shell and tried again with the new one). The funny thing is even if I purge the proftpd package and install vsftpd instead - it doesn't help - I can't log in. But I can log in with ssh.
